DANIEL
"For all time." Who the hell translated this?

[Catherine and Shore look at Myers.]

MYERS
Uh, I-I did.

DANIEL
(sighing)
Well, this should read: "A million years into the sky is Ra, sun god, sealed and buried for all time..." It's not "door to heaven".
(He crosses that word out and replaces it.)
"His Stargate."

[Catherine laughs. Daniel turns back to face the others. Kawalski watches with his arms folded.]

DANIEL
Well, so why is the military so interested in 5,000 year old Egyptian tablets?

O'NEIL
My report says 10,000.

DANIEL
(low, to Shore)
This figure 10,000 is ludicrous. I mean, Egyptian culture didn't even exist—

SHORE
Mmm. We know. But the sonic and radio carbon tests are conclusive.

DANIEL
Well, these are cover stones. Was there a tomb underneath?

SHORE
No, no, no. But we found something a lot more interesting.

O'NEIL
Excuse me. This information has become classified.
(to Kawalski)
From now on, no information is to be passed on to non-military personnel without my express permission.

[Kawalski nods, and O'Neil leaves.]

More snow and frigid temperatures on the way

SATURDAY, DEC. 10, 2016, 12:36 P.M.

By Nina Culver

The Spokane area saw its first significant snow fall of the season overnight, with about four new inches of snow hitting the ground by Saturday morning.

“It’s pretty similar across the area,” said Spokane National Weather Service forecaster Andrew Kalin.

The snow left unplowed streets a slippery mess. The number of reported accidents Saturday morning was low, likely because few people were commuting to work.

The snow is expected to start falling again Saturday evening and will continue off and on until Monday morning, Kalin said. Spokane should see another two to three inches over the weekend while Coeur d’Alene and other areas of North Idaho could see between four and six additional inches. Up to a foot of snow could fall in the North Idaho mountains.

Whatever snow falls will likely be sticking around for a while. Temperatures are expected to plunge Monday night, with overnight temperatures in the low single digits - or maybe lower - for several days, Kalin said. High temperatures will be in the low to mid teens.

“It’s gonna get cold,” he said. “We’re going to feel it.”

The Spokesman-Review

LOCAL NEWS

Light snow falling today, 1 to 3 inches likely tonight

FRIDAY, DEC. 9, 2016, 8:53 A.M.

From staff reports

A winter weather advisory has been issued for 1 to 3 inches of snow in lower elevations of the Spokane region by Saturday morning.

A dusting Thursday night in the Spokane region caused few problems Friday.

Snowfall through the day on Friday left an inch of snow on the ground at Spokane International Airport.

But the lingering winter storm is expected to bring additional snow to the region through the weekend.

Following Friday night’s expected snow, another 2 to 3 inches are expected Saturday night and Sunday in Spokane from a storm that is bringing a series of waves of snowfall.

The total by the end of the weekend could be as much as 4 to 6 inches, forecasters said.

Even more snow is likely in North Idaho. Coeur d’Alene and other locales in North Idaho could see 3 to 4 inches Friday night and another 4 to 6 inches by Monday morning.

Mountain areas are likely to see a foot of fresh powder or more, and valley locations next to the mountains may see upwards of a foot of snow through the weekend in North Idaho.

A frontal system to the south of the region was supplying moisture for Friday’s snowfall.

A connected low pressure area in the Gulf of Alaska was expected to move onshore over the weekend, creating the chance of accumulating snow.

Only about a half inch of snow fell overnight at Spokane International Airport. The same winter storm affecting the Inland Northwest was causing travel problems across the region. In Portland, flights to Spokane were being cancelled as a result.

In the Columbia Basin, areas of freezing drizzle were reported. The drizzle could result in icing conditions similar to freezing rain, forecasters said.

A warm front draped over the Oregon-Washington line was creating conditions for mist and drizzle falling into freezing temperatures at ground level.

The area of concern was centered around Moses Lake but covered an area from the Columbia River on the west to the Spokane-Lincoln county line on the east and as far north as Coulee City.

While arterials were generally clear this morning, continuing snowfall was expected to create widespread slippery conditions.

Through 4 a.m. the airport had four-tenths of an inch, said Steve Bodnar, National Weather Service meteorologist. Only light snow has fallen since. About a quarter of an inch fell in downtown Spokane from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday.

Some locations to the south of Spokane had more snow, Bodnar said. Lewiston had 1 1/2 inches overnight.

The Washtucna School District reported a two hour delay to the start of school.

Spokane’s temperature at noon was 19 degrees with a northeast wind of 9 mph, creating a wind chill of 8 degrees.

Traffic on Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass was moving over snow and ice. Travel was taking an extra 30 to 38 minutes between Ellensburg and North Bend.

Lookout Pass to the east was snowy, but traction was considered good, according to the Idaho Transportation Department.

Some light mist was falling at the airport along with the snow.

Another blast of arctic air and wind is expected early next week. Lows could approach zero degrees by Wednesday morning in Spokane with highs in the teens.

Orville Wright Early Flight Description Letters [Kahler] 1908-1909

Notes

The Wright brothers inaugurated the aerial age with the world's first successful flights of a powered heavier-than-air flying machine. After building and testing three full-sized gliders, the Wrights' first powered airplane flew at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903, making a 12-second flight, traveling 36 m (120 ft), with Orville piloting. The best flight of the day, with Wilbur at the controls, covered 255.6 m (852 ft) in 59 seconds. By 1908 the Wrights were demonstrating their machines in Europe. The U.S. Army Signal Corps advertised for bids for a two-seat observation aircraft and in September 1908 and June and July 1909, the Wrights flew at official Army trials at Fort Myer, Virginia. (It was here that powered flight's first fatality occurred: the tragic death of Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge.) A number of other demonstration flights were made, and records set, during this time period. On September 9, 1908, Orville Wright set three new endurance records at Fort Myer, two for flights with pilot only (57 minutes, 31 seconds and 62 minutes, 15 seconds respectively) and one for flight with passenger (6 minutes, 24 seconds with passenger Frank Purdy Lahm). The flight with Lahm was also probably the first night airplane flight.

Orville flew every day over the next week and a half. His flights on September 9, began to create great excitement as he set three world records.

The first flight was for 57 minutes, 13 seconds - setting a new world endurance record.

Almost immediately he took-off again, flying for 62 minutes, 15 seconds, breaking his previous record.

Next he flew with Lt. Frank Lahm as a passenger for 6 minutes, 24 seconds - a new endurance record for a flight with a passenger. The flight lasted until dusk and could probably qualify as the first night flight.

Comment: Wilbur flew two more flights that day. On his second flight he broke his own record by remaining airborne for 62 minutes, 15 seconds. On his third flight, he made his first passenger flight in public taking Lt. Frank Lahm for a 6-minute, 24-second spin. It set a new endurance record for a flight with a passenger.

On September 9, Orville set a new world's record for passenger flight carrying Lt. Frank Lahm on a six minute flight circling the field 6 ½ times. Lieutenant Lahm was the one who had first interested the Army in the Wright plane. He later rose to the rank of brigadier general in 1926 and became commander of the Army Air Corps.

"With the perfect development of the airplane, wars will be only an incident of past ages."

A float in the parade that followed the presentations sponsored by the West Side Business Men's Association, reiterated this theme with a banner that was emblazoned with the message: "The Wright Brothers Invention Should Prevent Further Wars And Insure Peace"

Not everyone shared this belief. One was Lt. Frank Lahm. Lt. Lahm was influential in arranging Orville's 1908 trials at Fort Myer, Va. The month after the Dayton's Celebration, Lt. Lahm was the passenger with Orville when he set a world record of one hour and 12-minutes for two-person flight at Ft. Myer. In October he was one of two officers trained to be a pilot by Orville.

Lt Lahm promoted flight to his superiors in the Army as "unquestionably having considerable military value." He retired in 1941 as a Brigadier General one week before Pearl Harbor's vivid demonstration of flight's military capabilities.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Bruce Halsted (November 25, 1853 – March 16, 1922), usually cited as G. B. Halsted, was an American mathematician who explored foundations of geometry and introduced non-Euclidean geometry into the United States through his own work and his many important translations.

The George Bruce Halsted Papers

By Kristy Sorensen

The following article, featured as part of the Archives of American Mathematics Spotlight, was published in the February 2005 issue of MAA FOCUS.

The George Bruce Halsted Papers, an important collection at the Archives of American Mathematics (AAM), have recently been reorganized to make them easier for researchers to access.

George Bruce Halsted (1853-1922) was a mathematician internationally known for his scholarship and teaching. His research focused on the foundations of geometry, and he introduced non-Euclidean geometry to the United States through his own work and his many important translations. While still in college, Halsted had earned a reputation as having a gift for "imparting mathematics to the most obtuse," as L.E. Dickson wrote in an 1894 biography. Halsted maintained this reputation throughout his career.

Halsted was a fourth-generation Princeton graduate, earning his bachelor's degree in 1875 and his master's in 1878. He was among J.J. Sylvester's first students at the Johns Hopkins University. During this time, he also published his influential Bibliography of Hyper-Space and Non-Euclidean Geometry (1878) and studied with Carl Borchardt in Berlin. After his graduation in 1879, Halsted served as an instructor in mathematics at Princeton. He began his post at the University of Texas at Austin in 1884.

There, Halsted taught noted mathematicians R.L. Moore and L.E. Dickson, among other students. He strove to challenge his students' common assumptions about geometry.

George Bruce Halsted

Born: 23 November 1853 in Newark, New Jersey, USA

Died: 16 March 1922 in New York, USA

This last controversy led to the college administration being investigated by a grand jury and by two committees appointed by the state governor. Halsted spent most of the last years of his life continuing with his mathematical writing while working as an electrician in the family-run electricity supply store that he had established in Greeley.

When Halsted completed the Princeton University Biographical Questionnaire he wrote:-

I am working as an electrician as there is nothing in cultivating vacant lots.

He certainly felt badly treated by the mathematical community.

Writing in, H S Tropp says of Halsted:-

In the period when American mathematics had few distinguished names, the eccentric and sometimes spectacular Halsted established himself as an internationally known scholar, creative teacher and promoter and popularizer of mathematics.

His other main interest was in mathematical education and, as a mathematics educator, he criticised the careless way that mathematics was presented in the textbooks of the time. He contributed over ninety article to the American Mathematical Monthly and wrote many biographies of mathematicians

NOVA Season 15 Episode 10

Secrets of the Lost Red Paint People

Aired Wednesday 9:00 PM Dec 15, 1987 on PBS

Thousands of years ago, a mysterious clan of people dwelled along the coast of the North Atlantic. They have left very few clues, but the clues they did leave point to a sophisticated and intelligent culture. The NOVA team works with archeologists who are dedicated to finding out more about the Red Paint People and their ways of life.

AIRED: 12/15/87

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Paint_People

Red Paint People

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Red Paint People are a Pre-Columbian culture indigenous to the New England and Atlantic Canada regions of North America. They were named after their burials, which used large quantities of ochre, normally red, to cover both the bodies of the dead and grave goods. Sometimes they are known as the Moorehead Phase of the Laurentian Tradition or the Moorehead burial tradition after Warren K. Moorehead who brought them widely to the attention of scientists. They flourished between 3000 BCE and 1000 BCE. Alternatively, they can be called by the period in which they lived, either the "Maritime Archaic" (emphasizing a coastal and seafaring culture) or "Late Archaic" (emphasizing time and leaving open the possibility of living inland seasonally), although these terms often cover the longer period from 7000 BCE to 1000 CE. Multiple hypotheses exist as to which if any later peoples might be their descendants and there is little archaeological evidence to support any hypothesis.

Their burial culture was more elaborate than any subsequent culture in the area. In the southern portion of their range, they were succeeded by the Susquehana culture which used pottery, and no evidence of their stoneworking techniques is found in that culture.

Scientific investigation

The graves with red paint were known as early as the 1840s, but the first scientific examination was in 1892 by Charles Willoughby of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. Willoughby exhibited a scale model of the dig at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. It caught the attention of Moorehead, who did more digs and published research about them from 1912 to the 1920s. He described them as older than other cultures of the area. This was disputed until radiometric dating proved Moorehead correct. In the 1930s, one theory for their disappearance was that they had been killed by tsunamis caused by coastal subsidence. This is no longer believed.
