http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Island_Bridge

The Green Island Bridge crosses the Hudson River, connecting Green Island, New York with Troy, New York.

The original Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad bridge was a wood-truss covered bridge built in 1832. On May 10, 1862 it caught fire from the sparks of a passing locomotive and soon fell into the river. Parts of the burning structure, floating with the current, imperiled the steamboats and the smaller craft tied up along the wharves. The devastating wind-driven fire also consumed more than 500 buildings covering 75 acres of downtown Troy. This bridge was replaced by a second wooden bridge.

In 1884 a steel railroad bridge replaced the second wooden bridge. The steel bridge was really two parallel bridges owned by the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. When rail service ended in Troy on July 27, 1963, it was converted for automobile traffic. Until then the northern span was a rail bridge, and the southern span was a toll bridge for cars, trolleys, and pedestrians. It had a lift span added in 1924-25 for river shipping. This bridge failed on March 15, 1977 due to flooding caused by 2.7 inches of heavy weekend rains, coupled with melting snows and heavy runoff. The flood-induced scour undermined the lift span pier, causing the western lift tower and roadbed span of the bridge to collapse into the Hudson River.

The current Green Island Bridge (shown in the photos) was opened four-and-a-half years later on September 12, 1981. Construction costs topped $23,000,000. The bridge is a vertical lift bridge which is raised only occasionally for river traffic. The two metal-covered frames, which straddle the roadway, house the counterweights and lift mechanisms. The lift bridge joins Troy and Center Island (once known as Starbuck Island), an island in the river. There is another bridge that connects Center Island with the village of Green Island (which is no longer an island).

653 - Remarks on Arrival at Jacksonville Naval Air Station, Florida.

November 2nd, 1975

Admiral Green, Captain Bernstein, Mayor Tanzler, Senator Chiles, Congress. man Burke, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

First, I am deeply grateful for the warm welcome by Admiral Green and all of you from the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. I am most appreciative, on behalf of Mrs. Ford and myself, that so many of you have come out on a Sunday on this occasion.

As all of you know, I am in the process of having further very important meetings with President Sadat of Egypt. It is quite interesting, in my judgment, that I am meeting this afternoon with a man who represents a country whose history goes back literally centuries and centuries and centuries.

And at the same time, I am in a part of our country where we have some contrast between the old and the new. Jacksonville is a relatively modern city, historically, and certainly a very progressive city in our development of our great country.

But not far from here we have the oldest city in the United States--St. Augustine. So, in a relatively small part of this great country, we have a history that goes back from the very beginning and a community that represents. progress and tremendous enthusiasm and drive.

I believe this shows the diversity of America. And this diversity in this great country is one of our strengths as we meet the challenges both at home and abroad.

But we cannot, in this country, solve our problems at home or meet our commitments internationally if we don't have a strong national defense program. It is vitally important for peace that we have a national defense program second to none.

All of you at the naval air station in Jacksonville perform a great service in that regard. I know of the missions and responsibilities that you have here. You have the helicopter antisubmarine warfare unit that does a tremendous job. You have the long-range naval capability in the antisubmarine warfare area. You have nuclear-powered naval vessels.

This naval air station is a vital part of our total national security capability, and what you do here protects 214 million Americans. And on behalf of them, I thank you for your contribution.

A long, long time ago, I was a part of the Navy. I was very proud of that association for some 47 months. I learned a lot. I hope I contributed a little. But I know from firsthand experiences the trials and tribulations of serving in our uniformed services.

The men and women who serve do a superb job. But the wives and the children of men in service--Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard-are likewise making a great contribution, because I know of the sacrifices they make over the years in performing their part of this service. And' I thank them for what I know they do.

Let me say, in conclusion, that the meetings that I am having today and the ones that I had earlier in the week with President Sadat relate to a better and more peaceful world. But I can go and have these discussions, these talks from a position of strength, and all of you are a very vital and important part of that strength.

So, it makes my job easier, it makes our country more secure to know that we have people like you serving in our national security forces.

Thank you very, very much.

Note: The President spoke at 11:25 a.m. In his opening remarks, he referred to Rear Adm. Norman Green, USN, commander of the Jacksonville Naval bases, and Capt. Karl Bernstein, USN, commanding officer of Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_%28nuclear_propulsion%29

Project Orion (nuclear propulsion)

Project Orion was the first engineering design study of a spacecraft powered by nuclear pulse propulsion

Reaction mass for Orion would have been built into the bombs or dropped between 'pulses' to provide thrust.

The smallest 4000 ton model planned for ground launch from Jackass Flats, Nevada had each blast add 30 mph (50 km/h) to the craft's velocity. A graphite based oil was to be sprayed on the pusher plate before each explosion to prevent ablation of the pusher plate. This sequence would be repeated thousands of times, like an atomic pogo stick.

Orion's potential performance was stunning, at least compared to today's chemical or even other nuclear designs. Jerry Pournelle, who is acquainted with the project and its ex-team leader Freeman Dyson, has been quoted as saying that a single mission could have provided us with a large permanent moon base.[citation needed] Alternatively an Orion could reach Pluto and return to Earth inside of a year. Single stage to Mars and back also seemed to be possible.[citation needed]

Cause and Effect

"Cause and Effect" is a 5th season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

At the next cycle Crusher incorrectly guesses the cards, as Data has reshuffled the deck to highlight instances of the number three. Data encounters further instances of three. The crew discuss the recording of the voices and the numerical message but are unsure of its meaning. On the bridge, as the ship materializes from the space-time distortion, Data again suggests using the tractor beam. Before he carries out the procedure, he recognizes the significance of the number three in the form of Riker's rank insignia. He decompresses the main shuttle bay, which moves the Enterprise enough to avoid a collision, and also clear of the distortion.

NUCLEAR PULSE SPACE VEHICLE STUDY

Vol. III--CONCEPTUAL VEHICLE DESIGNS

AND OPERATIONAL SYSTEMS (U)

2. I. 7. Flight Control

Various methods of flight control during propulsion have been considered in previous nuclear-pulse-propulsion studies. One method of directional control was by fine adjustments of the position or attitude of the pulse units at detonation, which requires no auxiliary propellant. In this study, however, a chemical-rocket, lateral-thrust attitude control system is used. Its size is relatively small, since the basic propulsion system, for most over-all configurations at least, is stable and partially self-correcting for pulse misalignments that are within tolerances.

Remarks of the Honorable Ronald Reagan

At the 31st Republican National Convention

August 19, 1976

This speech was delivered impromptu at the Republican National Convention at the urging of President Gerald Ford.

798 words

Thank you very much. Mr. President, Mrs. Ford, Mr. Vice President, Mr. Vice President to be--(Applause and laughter)--the distinguished guests here, and you ladies and gentlemen: I am going to say fellow Republicans here, but also those who are watching from a distance, all of those millions of Democrats and Independents who I know are looking for a cause around which to rally and which I believe we can give them. (Applause)

Mr. President, before you arrived tonight, these wonderful people here when we came in gave Nancy and myself a welcome. That, plus this, and plus your kindness and generosity in honoring us by bringing us down here will give us a memory that will live in our hearts forever. (Applause)

Watching on television these last few nights, and I have seen you also with the warmth that you greeted Nancy, and you also filled my heart with joy when you did that. (Applause)

May I just say some words. There are cynics who say that a party platform is something that no one bothers to read and it doesn't very often amount to much.

Whether it is different this time than it has ever been before, I believe the Republican Party has a platform that is a banner of bold, unmistakable colors, with no pastel shades. (Applause)

We have just heard a call to arms based on that platform, and a call to us to really be successful in communicating and reveal to the American people the difference between this platform and the platform of the opposing party, which is nothing but a revamp and a reissue and a running of a late, late show of the thing that we have been hearing from them for the last 40 years. (Applause)

If I could just take a moment; I had an assignment the other day. Someone asked me to write a letter for a time capsule that is going to be opened in Los Angeles a hundred years from now, on our Tricentennial.

It sounded like an easy assignment. They suggested I write something about the problems and the issues today. I set out to do so, riding down the coast in an automobile, looking at the blue Pacific out on one side and the Santa Ynez Mountains on the other, and I couldn't help but wonder if it was going to be that beautiful a hundred years from now as it was on that summer day.

Then as I tried to write--let your own minds turn to that task. You are going to write for people a hundred years from now, who know all about us. We know nothing about them. We don't know what kind of a world they will be living in.

And suddenly I thought to myself if I write of the problems, they will be the domestic problems the President spoke of here tonight; the challenges confronting us, the erosion of freedom that has taken place under Democratic rule in this country, the invasion of private rights, the controls and restrictions on the vitality of the great free economy that we enjoy. These are our challenges that we must meet.

And then again there is that challenge of which he spoke that we live in a world in which the great powers have poised and aimed at each other horrible missiles of destruction, nuclear weapons that can in a matter of minutes arrive at each other's country and destroy, virtually, the civilized world we live in.

And suddenly it dawned on me, those who would read this letter a hundred years from now will know whether those missiles were fired. They will know whether we met our challenge. Whether they have the freedoms that we have known up until now will depend on what we do here.

Will they look back with appreciation and say, "Thank God for those people in 1976 who headed off that loss of freedom, who kept us now 100 years later free, who kept our world from nuclear destruction"?

And if we failed, they probably won't get to read the letter at all because it spoke of individual freedom, and they won't be allowed to talk of that or read of it.

This is our challenge; and this is why here in this hall tonight, better than we have ever done before, we have got to quit talking to each other and about each other and go out and communicate to the world that we may be fewer in numbers than we have ever been, but we carry the message they are waiting for.

We must go forth from here united, determined that what a great general said a few years ago is true: There is no substitute for victory, Mr. President. (Applause)

Not a chance.

Haley’s comet is the authentic once in a lifetime chance of seeing something that you can never ever see again in YOUR LIFETIME, no matter how much money you want to spend. Watching a blue moon or a solar eclipse or a meteor shower or a close shave with a meteorite is a cultural phenomenon of astronomical proportion (Pun intended) which creates a lot of interest among mass as well as media. Can your brand replicate that?

Again, not by a long distance.

So the thing to learn from this is that there is a great deal of power in scarcity, about “once in a lifetime” things. As our entire brand marketing game is based on abundance and accesibility, some great brand marketing phenomenon can be created simply through the power of scarcity. Thats why the greatest TV commercial of all time, the Mackintosh 1984 ad, was shown only once in 1984 SuperBowl….never again.

Now how can we relive the magic of scarcity?

What if we can create an exclusive line of clothes, chewing gum, laptops…..anything, and promote it as if its an REALLY exclusive item (meaning : once its replenished, it will never be reproduced again), then wouldnt it create a massive buzz and pull? It must. If we knew that no matter how we love it and pay for it, this new line of stuff will never ever be made available again, wouldnt we stand in line and bark for our exclusive peace? Wouldnt we convey the message to our loved ones that get that stuff before it gets finished? It simply must.

Now through that we turn the entire game on its wheel. The brand brings this new line, makes it available to people, draw up a high margin because he is selling exclusive stuff, create this huge mind share and then use that mind share in future to earn more business.

But no matter what, he should never reproduce that EXCLUSIVE product line, because that just kills the magic. What the brand probably should do, is invest in the next big EXCLUSIVE thing.

FUTURAMA

Episode 307

"THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STUPID"

[Hall of Forever. Nine of Nibbler's race sit on raised chairs in a dark chamber. Enter Nibbler and Leela.]

KEN
Welcome back, Lord Nibbler, Ambassador to Earth, homeworld of the pizza bagel.

[Nibbler speaks plain English with a deep voice.]

NIBBLER
Thank you. I bear many receipts for reimbursement.

FIONA
The four welcomes of friendship to you as well, Leela. We shall manipulate your mind so we appear to be speaking your language. Do not be afraid, my child.

[She pulls the hood of her robe off her head. Her eyestalk has a little orange bow tied around it.]

LEELA
I'm not afraid.

FIONA
Uh, good. Good.

LEELA
So, your real name is Lord Nibbler?

That's a coincidence.

NIBBLER
That name is for your sake. In the time it would take to pronounce one letter of my true name a trillion cosmoses would flair into existence and sink into eternal night.

[Leela laughs and pinches Nibbler's cheek.]

LEELA
Oh, you're all so cute!

KEN
No, we are not. We Nibblonians are an ancient and powerful race. Behold. When the universe was forged in the crucible of the big bang, our mighty race was already 17 years old.

LEELA
Aww!

[Fiona growls. The hologram changes and shows a rocky planet with a lightning storm overhead.]

KEN
For the first millisecond of time, things were OK. But then there arose a terrible enemy: The Brain Spawn. Ever since, we have waged unceasing war against these dreadful --

[A Nibblonian chef opens a door into the chamber.]

NIBBLONIAN CHEF
Lunch is ready.

KEN
Then let the feast of a thousand hams begin.

[Cut to: Outside Hall of Forever. Chewing and eating noises come from inside and the Nibblonians burp.]

[Cut to: Hall of Forever. Leela is sat on the floor tickling Ken and Fiona like cats.]

LEELA
So why are these Brain Spawn attacking Earth, Nibbler?

[Above Nibbler is a hologram of the Brain Spawn flying around New New York.]

NIBBLER
The Brain Spawn hate all consciousness. The thoughts of others screech at them like the forced laughs of a billion art house movie patrons.

KEN
Thus, they travel from world to world making everyone stupid in order to wipe out all thought in the universe.

LEELA
Wipe out all thought? My God! They're like flying televisions.

FIONA
And even we are powerless to stop them, fearsome though we are.

[She purrs.]

NIBBLER
There is but one being that can resist them. A child of destiny whose bizzare brain wave pattern makes him immune to the Brain Spawn attack. He is the hope of the universe. The fate of your world - perhaps all worlds - rests in his special mind.

LEELA
Now, when you say "special"...
