Sophie's Choice (film)

"No Country" wins best picture, directing Oscars
Heavies ruled the first acting prizes. Along with Day-Lewis' greedy oilman, Bardem played an unshakable executioner in "No Country" and Swinton played a malevolent attorney in "Michael Clayton."
"I have an American agent who is the spitting image of this," said Swinton, fondly looking at her Oscar statuette.
"Really, truly, the same shape head, and it has to be said, the buttocks. And I'm giving this to him, because there's no way I'd be in America at all, ever, on a plane if it wasn't for him," said Swinton, who played a conniving attorney who stops at nothing to achieve her goals in a $3 billion class-action lawsuit.

As the son of the Prince of Wales and the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince William is a member of the British Royal Family. He was the first prince to be born into the immediate royal family since the birth of Prince Edward in 1964.
On 22 April 2008 it was announced that the Queen was pleased to appoint Prince William as a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. He became the 1,000th member on the Order's Register. On June 16, 2008 he was officially appointed by the Queen at a service at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.
The last time a sovereign granted the Order of the Garter to a grandchild was in 1894, when Queen Victoria installed her grandson Prince Alfred, The Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Before him in 1884, Prince George of Wales (later King George V) was granted with the Order too.

LONDON (AP) -- Prince William was made a Royal Knight of the Garter on Monday at a ceremony presided over by his grandmother -- the British monarch -- and attended by his father, brother and girlfriend.
Queen Elizabeth II made William the 1,000th knight to join the order and formally presented him with the regalia, including a blue garter, sash and star brooch.
After the ceremony at Windsor Castle, the knights wore their traditional ostrich feather hats and velvet robes as they walked to St. George's chapel in the castle grounds for a service.
William's girlfriend Kate Middleton, dressed in a black suit and hat, watched the procession with his brother Prince Harry.
The Order of the Garter was established in 1348; the monarch can give the honor to anyone she chooses without advice from government ministers. It is meant to honor those who have held public office, who have contributed to national life or who have served the queen personally. William, 25, is second in line to the throne after his father, Prince Charles.
Two former prime ministers, Margaret Thatcher and John Major, are members of the order.

The Most Noble Order of the Garter is an order of chivalry, or knighthood, originating in medieval England, and presently bestowed on recipients in any of the Commonwealth realms; it is the pinnacle of the honours system in the United Kingdom. Except for female sovereigns, the next Lady of the Garter named was Queen Alexandra, by her husband King Edward VII. King George V also made his consort, Queen Mary, a Lady of the Garter and King George VI subsequently did the same for his wife, Queen Elizabeth. Throughout the 20th century, women continued to be associated with the Order, but except for foreign female monarchs, they were not made companions. In 1987, however, it became possible to install "Ladies Companion of the Garter" under a statute of Queen Elizabeth II.

Evolution of Cap Device
There seem to have been three phases in the evolution of the present hat-band device design. The eagle and anchor emblem was adopted in the uniform regulations of 1797 to be used on uniform buttons. From then until 1866, the device was used without much consistency on petty officer uniform rating badges, officer sword-hilts and sword-belts, captains' epaulettes and finally on officer caps.
