The space station Deep Space Nine (DS9) is the main setting of the science fiction television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
The station serves as a base for the exploration of the Gamma Quadrant via the Bajoran wormhole, and is a hub of trade and travel for the sector's denizens. It is run by a joint crew of Starfleet and Bajoran officers, and it is the home port of a number of Starfleet runabouts and the USS Defiant. The station and its crew play a vital role to the events surrounding the Bajoran sector, the wormhole, and the Dominion War.
Originally a Cardassian mining and refinery station named "Terok Nor" in orbit around Bajor, it was built by slave Bajoran labor under Cardassian rule in 2351. The station was commanded by Gul Dukat, the last Cardassian prefect of Bajor. It was abandoned toward the end of the Cardassian occupation of Bajor in 2369; the Cardassians removed anything of value on their way out.
In 2369, the Bajorans assumed control of the station. The Bajoran provisional government requested the assistance of the United Federation of Planets, who renamed it Deep Space Nine (DS9) and placed Commander Benjamin Sisko in command. Despite the Federation presence, the station remains subject to Bajoran law. Shortly after Sisko assumes command, his crew discovers the Bajoran wormhole. The station is moved to the mouth of the wormhole to secure Bajor's claim to it, after which the station assumes great commercial, scientific and strategic importance.

In the television series Star Trek and its spin-offs, Galactic quadrant refers to an area of the Milky Way Galaxy (although it's apparently no longer called the Milky Way). In the original Star Trek, it referred to an area interchangeable with a sector, but in the spin offs created in the 1990s, a system of four Galactic Quadrants, designated by the Greek letters Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, has been used.
Bajoran wormhole
In the fictional Star Trek universe, the Bajoran wormhole is a wormhole located near the planet Bajor. The Bajoran religion refers to the wormhole as the "Celestial Temple". It appears as an aperture of swirling golden light surrounded by blue clouds, which appears when a vessel approaches and disappears when the vessel enters it; it also appears when discharging a vessel. The wormhole can only be traversed by ships traveling at impulse (sub-light speed) velocities.
The wormhole is discovered in the first episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It is found to lead from the Bajor-B'Hava'el system in the Alpha Quadrant to the Idran system in the Gamma Quadrant, seventy thousand light-years away and on the other side of the galaxy. Due to the strategic importance of such a phenomenon, the Deep Space Nine space station is moved out of Bajor's orbit and repositioned near the wormhole.
Starfleet Commander Benjamin Sisko and Lieutenant Jadzia Dax are the first to make contact with the wormhole and its creators, non-corporeal beings known as the Prophets in Bajoran religion; they are simply referred to as "Wormhole Aliens" by the Federation. It is they who provided the Orb-like energy artifacts, or "Tears of the Prophets", to the Bajorans; these artifacts are the basis of Bajoran religion.
The wormhole becomes a point of conflict throughout the series, since it permits travel between the Alpha Quadrant and the Gamma Quadrant controlled by the Dominion, a belligerent organization not unlike a sinister version of the Federation. Neither the Dominion nor the major powers of the Alpha Quadrant wish the other to gain a foothold in their quadrant which makes controlling the mouth of the wormhole extremely important. The wormhole closes at one point, as a result of one of the Tears of the Prophets being destroyed by the Pah Wraiths. It is later restored by the discovery of an additional orb by Benjamin Sisko.

"The Visitor" is the title of an episode from the fourth season of the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
The episode begins on a rainy night. An old man, sitting at a desk in his house, injects himself with a hypospray. A moment later, the doorbell rings and a young woman comes in from the rain. She identifies herself as Melanie, an aspiring novelist, and is flustered to finally be meeting Jake Sisko, her favorite author, in the flesh. However, he's only ever written two books (Anslem and Collected Stories), and she wants to know why he gave it up. After a moment, Jake says he'll tell her: he stopped because, when he was eighteen, his father died.
The action now flashes back over some 80 years, with Old Jake (Tony Todd) narrating to Melanie (Rachel Robinson). The day of his death, Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) took his son Jake (Cirroc Lofton) out on the USS Defiant to see the Bajoran Wormhole undergo a "subspace inversion" ("a natural wonder which only happens every 50 years"). Unfortunately, the inversion causes problems with the Defiant's warp engine, and Sisko goes below deck to keep the ship from exploding. With Jake's help, he succeeds... But an energy discharge slants out of the warp core and vaporizes him right before his son's eyes.

Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), the Human Starfleet officer placed in charge of Deep Space Nine. At the start of the series, he is a grieving widower (his wife having been killed by the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359) and the father of a teenage son. He and Jadzia Dax discover the Bajoran wormhole, which the Bajorans believe is the home of the Prophets, their gods and protectors. The Bajorans hail Sisko as the Emissary of the Prophets, an exalted religious status that initially makes him very uncomfortable. Due to his exemplary leadership, at the end of the third season, he is promoted from commander to captain.
Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor), a Bajoran militia major (later promoted to colonel), former guerrilla fighter during the Cardassian Occupation, and Sisko's second in command. She is initially suspicious of the Federation's intentions toward her planet, but grows to trust and befriend the rest of the crew. Like most Bajorans, she is deeply religious, which makes it awkward having the Emissary as her commander.
Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), the chief medical officer. Although Human, his parents had him illegally genetically enhanced when he was a child because he could not keep up with his peers. Somewhat tactless, he nevertheless develops friendships with several of the station's residents, particularly Miles O'Brien and, more ambiguously, a mysterious Cardassian named Garak.

Season one
Quinn Mallory, a graduate student of physics specializing in string theory, creates a device capable of opening vortices to alternate universes. With a little help from his double from another universe, he develops the technology to the extent that not only can he send items through the gateway he created, but also, with the use of a timer, to return them to their point of origin. He uses himself as his first living "guinea pig."
His best friend Wade Welles and his professor/mentor Maximillian Arturo join him on his second test. However, the wormhole grows unstable and spirals out of control. Some jurisdictions use the term "confiscation" instead of forfeiture. Neutralization theory
Gresham Sykes and David Matza's neutralization theory explains how deviants justified their deviant behaviors by adjusting the definitions of their actions and by explaining to themselves and others the lack of guilt of their actions in particular situations. There are five different types of rationalizations, which are the denial of responsibility, the denial of injury, the denial of the victim, the condemnation of the condemners, and the appeal to higher loyalties.
The denial of responsibility is the argument that the deviant was helplessly propelled into the deviance, and that under the same circumstances, any other person would resort to similar actions. The denial of injury is the argument that the deviant did not hurt anyone, and thus the deviance is not morally wrong, due to the fundamental belief that the action caused no harm to other individuals or to the society. The denial of the victim is the argument that possible individuals on the receiving end of the deviance were not injured, but rather experiences righteous force, due to the victim's lack of virtue or morals. The condemnation of the condemners is the act by which the deviant accuses authority figures or victims for having the tendency to be equally deviant, and as a result, hypocrites. Finally, the appeal to higher loyalties is the belief that there are loyalties and values that go beyond the confines of the law; friendships and traditions are more important to the deviant than legal boundaries.
The Neutralization Theory says that criminals rationalize actions by neutralizing the definitions of crime. There are 5 major types of neutralization:
Denial Of Responsibility: Propelled helplessly into crime.
Denial Of Injury: Crime does not hurt anyone, not morally wrong.
Denial Of The Victim: Victim did not receive injury but rather, rightful force.
Condemnation Of The Condemners: Condemners are hypocrites, deviants as well.

Reichert says Rahr should be successor

If the Metropolitan King County Council approves Sheriff Dave Reichert's recommended successor, Field Operations Chief Sue Rahr, she will be the first woman to be appointed sheriff in the organization's 152-year history.
Reichert, a Republican who defeated radio talk-show host Dave Ross for the District 8 Congressional seat last week, plans to step down as sheriff on Dec. 31.
He said in a statement released yesterday that Rahr, a 25-year veteran on the force, was "the logical choice" to head the 1,000-employee law-enforcement agency with a $110 million budget.

New York City: the year 2000. The most wasteful society in the history of the galaxy and it was running out of places to empty its never-ending output of garbage. The landfills were full. New Jersey was full. And so, under cover of darkness, the city put its garbage out to sea on the world's largest barge. The repulsive barge circled the oceans for 50 years but no country would accept it. Not even that really filthy one. You know the one I mean. Finally, in 2052, the city used its mob connections to obtain a rocket and launch the garbage into outer space. Some experts claim the ball might return to Earth someday, but their concerns were dismissed as "depressing".
