NASA engineer warned of possible shuttle breach, e-mails indicate

WASHINGTON — A NASA safety engineer warned days before Columbia broke apart that he feared the shuttle was at risk for a breach near its left wheel and suggested others in the space agency weren’t adequately considering the threat.
“We can’t imagine why getting information is being treated like the plague,” the engineer wrote in one of a series of e-mails released today that describe internal concerns about Columbia’s safety in the days before its breakup Feb. 1 over Texas.
Other documents NASA released show that on liftoff Columbia may have been struck by as many as three large chunks of foam that smashed against delicate insulating tiles, not just the one previously acknowledged.
Robert Daugherty, an engineer at NASA’s Langley research facility in Hampton, Va., apparently did not believe a breach might cause Columbia to break apart during its fiery descent, saying that deadly heat burning into the wheel compartment was “arguably very unlikely.”
But Daugherty explicitly warned in an e-mail Jan. 29 that “one of the bigger concerns” was that damage to thermal tiles near Columbia’s wheel compartment seal could permit a breach there. He appeared mostly worried about pilots struggling to land Columbia with one or more tires damaged from extreme heat.

This reminds me of the heavy gray shirt with the green mock turtleneck under it - which could be construed as symbolic of my status as an active duty U.S. Navy officer, including my career as U.S. Navy aviator and U.S. Navy SEAL - that I was wearing on 12/7/1998 when Microsoft took the photo of me for the security badge. Microsoft would later re-issue that badge photo with a red smudge on my forehead that appeared as though I had been shot in the head or suffered some other traumatic injury.
What established national traitor Larry Carr is trying to do here is to create an alibi to help Microsoft-Corbis-Al Qaeda avoid prosecution, which has been in progress all this time, for their capital crimes against the United States federal government. Button Up Bandit, others hitting banks at rapid pace

On Tuesday, Button Up is suspected of his 10th local robbery, at a Washington Mutual branch in the University District that was empty of customers at the time, said Carr. Button Up now seems not to care about drawing attention to himself, Carr said, noting that during Tuesday's robbery, he was wearing a brightly colored disco shirt, orange tinted sunglasses and a moustache the teller said she knew was fake because she could see glue on the robber's face.
"She got a bad feeling when he walked in with that fake moustache. ... She knew she was going to be robbed," said Carr, the coordinator of the five-member Puget Sound Violent Crimes Task Force, an FBI-led team of agents and detectives from the Seattle Police Department and King County Sheriff's Office who spend the bulk of their time tracking down bank robbers.
Button Up and four other "unsubs" — FBI shorthand for "unknown subjects" — together are thought to be responsible for more than 30 robberies, nearly one-third of the bank robberies committed in Washington since January.
Most of the robbers are transients or homeless and live in cheap hotel rooms, their cars or on the streets, Carr said. When the money runs out, they hit another bank and the cycle continues, he said.
"Banks and law enforcement — we're all pounding our heads against the same wall," Carr said. "It's frustrating," he said, because most robberies are committed quickly and little evidence is left behind. More often than not, Carr and the task-force detectives must wait for a bank robber to make a mistake.
They're hoping Button Up will screw up so they can finally attach a name to his face and add him to their wall of known suspects.

Gresham Sykes and David Matza's neutralization theory explains how deviants justified their deviant behaviors by adjusting the definitions of their actions and by explaining to themselves and others the lack of guilt of their actions in particular situations. There are five different types of rationalizations, which are the denial of responsibility, the denial of injury, the denial of the victim, the condemnation of the condemners, and the appeal to higher loyalties.

The denial of injury is the argument that the deviant did not hurt anyone, and thus the deviance is not morally wrong, due to the fundamental belief that the action caused no harm to other individuals or to the society. The denial of the victim is the argument that possible individuals on the receiving end of the deviance were not injured, but rather experiences righteous force, due to the victim's lack of virtue or morals. The condemnation of the condemners is the act by which the deviant accuses authority figures or victims for having the tendency to be equally deviant, and as a result, hypocrites. Finally, the appeal to higher loyalties is the belief that there are loyalties and values that go beyond the confines of the law; friendships and traditions are more important to the deviant than legal boundaries.
The Neutralization Theory says that criminals rationalize actions by neutralizing the definitions of crime. There are 5 major types of neutralization:

On January 8, 2008, Bennett sold the team to a local group of women called Force 10 Hoops, LLC, pending league approval [6]. Starbucks, the king of coffee beans, sold its first shares of stock to the public today, and lines were as long as the queues at its 140 locations in seven metropolitan areas.
Starbucks' 2.1 million shares were priced to start trading at $17 a share, but the stock opened $4 higher at $21, and closed at $21.50. At that price, it made Chairman Howard Schultz's 1.1 million shares worth $23.5 million.

A bill of attainder (also known as an act or writ of attainder) is an act of legislature declaring a person or group of persons guilty of some crime and punishing them without benefit of a trial. The United States Constitution forbids both the federal and state governments to enact bills of attainder, in Article 1, Sections 9 and 10, respectively. It was considered an excess or abuse of the British monarchy and Parliament.

Bills of attainder were used through the 18th century in England, and were applied to British colonies as well. One of the motivations for the American Revolution was anger at the injustice of attainder—though the Americans themselves used bills of attainder to confiscate the property of British loyalists (called Tories) during the revolution. American dissatisfaction with attainder laws motivated their prohibition in the Constitution (see the case of Parker Wickham). The provision forbidding state law bills of attainder reflects the importance that the framers attached to this issue, since the unamended constitution imposes very few restrictions on state governments' power.

The Kingdome was an indoor sports and entertainment arena owned and operated by King County, Washington. Well, Paul, Senator, I hope you'll forgive me for having a little fun here tonight. The truth is, ladies and gentlemen, this isn't the easiest set of remarks that I've ever been asked to give. And that comes from someone who's had to give a fair number of speeches. Come to think of it, Paul, you've probably had to sit through more of them than either one of us wants to admit. And I know that finding the right word or expression can oftentimes mean the difference between hurting or helping, between doing this job well or not so well. But sometimes the words just aren't there. The task is really impossible. I guess that was what Lincoln felt at Gettysburg. He knew there are occasions when words must be brief because the feelings are so deep, and this evening is one such occasion.

Place and date: Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam, 10 to 13 April 1972. Entered service at: Silver Spring, Md. Born: 14 January 1944, Jacksonville, Fla. Citation: Lt. Norris completed an unprecedented ground rescue of 2 downed pilots deep within heavily controlled enemy territory in Quang Tri Province. Lt. Norris, on the night of 10 April, led a 5-man patrol through 2,000 meters of heavily controlled enemy territory, located 1 of the downed pilots at daybreak, and returned to the Forward Operating Base (FOB). On 11 April, after a devastating mortar and rocket attack on the small FOB, Lt. Norris led a 3-man team on 2 unsuccessful rescue attempts for the second pilot. On the afternoon of the 12th, a forward air controller located the pilot and notified Lt. Norris. Dressed in fishermen disguises and using a sampan, Lt. Norris and 1 Vietnamese traveled throughout that night and found the injured pilot at dawn. Covering the pilot with bamboo and vegetation, they began the return journey, successfully evading a North Vietnamese patrol. Approaching the FOB, they came under heavy machinegun fire. Lt. Norris called in an air strike which provided suppression fire and a smoke screen, allowing the rescue party to reach the FOB. By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, undaunted courage, and selfless dedication in the face of extreme danger, Lt. Norris enhanced the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.
