I remember having dreams when I last slept but I can remember absolutely no details. Except, maybe something to do with my imaginary girlfriend, Lily. For a while I have been wondering if they can also manipulate my half-asleep dreams too. Those are those first dreams I remember having when I am drifting off to sleep. I have never really thought of them as dreams though, rather more like random thoughts that go through my mind as I drift off. Last night, I have two such thoughts that stuck with me when I woke up minutes or seconds later. The first one was of Senator Carl Levin standing in front of me either in an elevator or waiting for an elevator. He said something about how my "reading was correct." The second scene was of Lily telling me of some endearing quality about herself.
This imaginary girlfriend routine is kind of fun, but with all these actors around me, who knows what is the reality. What I really want to avoid is encouraging people to stalk women on TV. No one should take seriously the perceived affections of a person on TV. My hope is that this situation will end soon and then some third person will make arrangements where we can meet and I can determine if this was all my imagination.
Even if Lily is as nice in person as she seems to be on TV, I'm beginning to think I shouldn't pursue it. I've been feeling confident this thing could actually be real, but that is actually a real problem. So many people are watching what I do in private so they can try to mimic my success. If I talk to a pretty woman on TV while sitting in my living room

Pan Am Flight 103 was Pan American World Airways' third daily scheduled transatlantic flight from London's Heathrow Airport to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. LOCKERBIE, Scotland - Officials speculated today that a terrorist bomb caused a Pan Am jumbo jet to explode in the air killing all 259 people on board and at least 22 people on the ground.
The wreckage of the Boeing 747 bound for New York with Christmas travelers ravaged the Scottish village of Lockerbie, destroying 40 houses, triggering an explosion at a gas station and engulfing cars in flames.
Wednesday's crash, the worst in British history, occurred 54 minutes after takeoff from London's Heath row Airport and followed an apparently routine climb to a cruising altitude of 31,000 feet, airline officials and traffic controllers said. The only possible cause immediately ruled out was a collision with another aircraft.
Rifkind, the British Cabinet minister responsible for Scotland, said the widespread wreckage of the plane indicated "the aircraft clearly experienced some form of explosion."
"It's clear that the accident happened in the air because parts of the wreckage are strewn over such a wide area,"

Well, I appreciate your presence here today and deeply appreciate all that many of you have been doing to ensure that our countrymen continue to enjoy the richness and beauty of America. There's a story I like to tell, and I've told it an awful lot of times, but I hope I haven't told it to any of you.
It has to do with an old farmer who picked up some creek-bottom land. It was all covered with rocks and overgrown with brush, but he set to work. And he hauled the rocks away, and he cleaned the brush. And he cultivated, and he fertilized, and he planted. And he had a garden spot. And one day at church, he asked the preacher if he wouldn't, after church, come on out and see what he'd done. Well, the Reverend got out there, and he looked at that corn. And he said, "I've never seen such corn. My," he said, "how the Lord has blessed this land. Those melons—I've never seen anything so big." He said, "God has certainly been good to this place here." And he went on that way, and the old boy was getting a little fidgety. And finally, he says, "Reverend, I wish you could have seen it when the Lord was doing it by Himself." [Laughter]
Well, today we're honoring praiseworthy citizens who are giving God a hand in preserving our precious gifts. Unlike the farmer in the story, more often than not, those we honor today are protecting our land from some of mankind's more wasteful and destructive ways. Some of America's greatest assets are, of course, the parks, national forests, and other public lands that have been set aside for the benefit and enjoyment of our people and for future generations. When one thinks of America, one thinks of purple mountain majesties, of bald eagles, of natural beauty, and of great halls where our ancestors gathered to lay the foundations of our democracy.
We take pride in our freedom, and we also take pride in the natural grandeur of our land. And there's much to be proud of. We have in our country the world's first and best national park system, national forests and wildlife refuges, an extraordinary urban park system, and preserved historic sites. And all this is the legacy of caring individuals, perhaps like the ones we honor today, who acted to see that these treasures were preserved and passed on. Our administration has been solidly committed to the restoration and maintenance of this inheritance. In the past 61/2 years, we've spent $1 billion to restore our national parks, which had been permitted to fall in some disrepair over a period of time. In the past 6 1/2 years, as I say, we've done that, and we've strictly upheld laws protecting our endangered species and have vigorously pursued plans to recover them. We've moved to stem the serious loss of vital wetlands, and we've set aside millions of
acres of wilderness, created 29 new wildlife refuges, and protected thousands of miles of scenic rivers and trails.

WASHINGTON - Libya has offered to pay $10 million per family as compensation for the deaths of 270 people in the 1988 Pan Am 103 bombing, lawyers representing the families said Tuesday.
They said the Libyan offer was a "vast multiple" of settlements paid in any other aviation or terrorism case.
At $10 million per family, the combined compensation would come to $2.7 billion. Of the 270 victims, 181 were Americans.
The lawyers have been negotiating with the Libyans for years, with a view toward reaching a settlement that would permit the lifting of both U.N. Security Council and U.S. sanctions against Libya.
Last year, a Scottish court convicted a Libyan intelligence agent, Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, of murder for smuggling an explosive aboard the Dec. 21, 1988, flight. A co-defendant was acquitted.
All 259 people on the plane were killed. Eleven more in Lockerbie, Scotland, died after being hit by falling debris.
Besides compensation for families, the Security Council also has demanded that Libya renounce terrorism, acknowledge responsibility for the crime and disclose all it knows about it.

The Libyan government denied Wednesday that it had offered $2.7 billion to compensate the families of those killed on board Pan Am Flight 103 when the airliner was ripped by a bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988, but U.S.-based lawyers said they believed an agreement can still be reached.
"The Libyan state has no relationship with what the media establishments have been transmitting regarding a draft agreement on compensation of the families of the victims," the government of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi said in a statement released in the capital, Tripoli.
Sources close to the negotiations had said Tuesday that Libya would pay $10 million to each family, but the payments would hinge on the United States and the United Nations lifting sanctions against Libya.
Pan Am Flight 103 was en route from London to Kennedy Airport on Dec. 21, 1988, when the Boeing 747 exploded in midair, killing all 259 on board and 11 people on the ground. The explosion was traced to Libyan intelligence agents who had planted a bomb in their luggage but never boarded the plane.
Sources close to the negotiation said the proposed settlement offer was made by officials authorized to negotiate for the Libyan government by the General People's Committee.
"The Libyan government is not at all renouncing the settlement offer. The Libyan government is making the point that it is the business, financial and legal communities that are doing the negotiating," said Jim Kreindler, one of the lawyers involved.

Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale (December 23, 1923 – July 5, 2005) was one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of the United States Navy.
Stockdale led aerial attacks from the carrier USS Ticonderoga (CVA 14) during the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Incident. NASA scientists are jubilant about the find because the detection of water so close to the surface — even frozen — bodes well for the search for traces of past or present life on Mars.
Yesterday's results are a confirmation and extension of the discovery of large ice fields announced in March, weeks after the spacecraft's instruments were first turned on. The Odyssey was launched in April 2001.
Scientists at the time said they were "blown away" by their results and knew they had discovered ice but could not say how much was there. The new study is the first to quantify the amount of ice that may exist on Mars.

May 28, 2002: Using instruments on NASA's 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft, surprised scientists have found enormous quantities of buried treasure lying just under the surface of Mars -- enough water ice to fill Lake Michigan twice over. And that may be only the tip of the iceberg.
"This is really amazing," says William Boynton of the University of Arizona. "This is the best direct evidence we have of subsurface water ice on Mars." Indeed, he added, "what we have found is much more ice than we ever expected."

The Mars Odyssey spacecraft's finding of ice beneath Mars' surface lends support to theories that early in its history Mars was wet and warm - and possibly amenable to life. It could also simplify a manned mission to Mars, supplying a source of drinking water and fuel for a return.
Scientists who study the surface of Mars, arid and frigid, have long wondered, where did all the water go?
The answer appears to be down, and not very far. In the polar regions, the surface is covered by a foot or two of dry soil. Below that, pores in the soil and rocky debris appear to be encrusted with ice. The concentration of ice is surprisingly high at one-fifth to one-third by weight and up to 60 percent by volume, the scientists report. In the equatorial regions, there was little water near the surface.
The journal Science will publish three scientific papers on the Odyssey measurements Thursday on its Web site, and some details were reported in the British news media over the weekend. The lead authors of the three papers are William V. Boynton of the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, William C. Feldman of Los Alamos National Laboratory and Igor G. Mitrofanov of the Institute for Space Research in Moscow.
"The results, even after only a month of mapping observations, are stunning," Dr. James F. Bell, a professor of astronomy at Cornell University, writes in an accompanying commentary, which will also appear on Science's Web site.
Launched in April last year, NASA's Odyssey arrived at Mars in September. After slowly nudging itself into its final orbit about 200 miles above the surface, the spacecraft began in February its $300 million mission of mapping the distribution and concentration of chemical elements and minerals on the planet's surface.
A month later, scientists announced they had detected strong signs of subsurface ice. The new papers provide the details and analysis of the observations.
The presence of large amounts of ice could reduce the amount of water that needed to be carried along if NASA were to plan a manned mission to Mars. Water could also be broken down into hydrogen and oxygen for fuel for the return trip.

2001 Mars Odyssey
2001 Mars Odyssey is a robotic spacecraft orbiting the planet Mars. Its mission is to use spectrometers and imagers to hunt for evidence of past or present water and volcanic activity on Mars. It is hoped that the data Odyssey obtains will help answer the question of whether life has ever existed on Mars. It also acts as a relay for communications between the Mars Explorations Rovers and Earth. The mission was named after the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, and refers to the differences between the movie and real life by the year 2001.
Odyssey was launched April 7, 2001 on a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and reached Mars on October 24, 2001, 0230 Universal Time (October 23, 7:30 p.m. PDT/ 10:30 EDT). The spacecraft's main engine fired to brake the spacecraft's speed and allowed it to be captured into orbit around Mars. Odyssey used a technique called "aerobraking" that gradually brought the spacecraft closer to Mars with each orbit. By using the atmosphere of Mars to slow down the spacecraft in its orbit rather than firing its engine or thrusters, Odyssey was able to save more than 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of propellant. Aerobraking ended in January, and began its science mapping mission on February 19, 2002.

After a flawless liftoff, NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft kicked off a $300 million, three-year mission to the Red Planet on Saturday to search for signs of underground ice and geyserlike springs.
Scientists hope the orbital spacecraft can point the way for future robotic surface probes and possibly human explorers as they search for evidence that Mars hosts or once hosted some form of life.

Timing is everything.
Three years ago Compaq Computer Corp. spent $5.4 million to rename the Summit for six years, which seems like a bargain in today's madly escalating market of sports venue naming rights.
Compaq bought a permanent, eye-catching billboard on the Southwest Freeway and countless mentions on television and radio and in the newspaper. Every concert that comes to Compaq Center promotes the arena in its ads. Bob Costas and other broadcasters say the name coast-to-coast during national Rockets telecasts.
"It's been a tremendous investment for us," said Steve Huey, vice president of marketing communications for Compaq.
As companies and teams have realized the value of naming rights, especially in the last two or three years, the prices have skyrocketed.
Last year, the rights to Enron Field fetched $100 million over 30 years, and the professional football stadium could double that. Naming a proposed downtown basketball arena might cost $5.4 million - for a single year.
By the end of 2001, if voters approve public funding for the arena, the owners of Houston's three major sports franchises could have contracts, when combined, worth half a billion dollars to name their new facilities.
Houston-based Reliant Energy is believed to be an early front-runner, but serious negotiations with interested parties are just beginning, team sources said. There has been interest from several corporations, national and international.

History
Since gambling pre-dates recorded history it comes as little surprise that evidence of match fixing is found throughout recorded history. The Ancient Olympics were almost constantly dealing with allegations of athletes accepting bribes to lose a competition and city-states which often tried to manipulate the outcome with large amounts of money. These activities went on despite the oath each athlete took to protect the integrity of the events and the severe punishment sometimes inflicted on those who were caught. Chariot racing was also dogged by race fixing throughout its history.
By the end of the 19th century gambling was illegal in most jurisdictions, but that did not stop its widespread practice. Boxing soon became rife with fighters "taking a dive" - probably because boxing is an individual sport which makes its matches much easier to fix without getting caught. Baseball also became plagued by match fixing despite efforts by the National League to stop gambling at its games. Matters finally came to a head in 1919 when eight members of the Chicago White Sox threw the World Series (see Black Sox Scandal). In an effort to restore confidence, Major League Baseball established the office of the Baseball Commissioner, and one of Kenesaw Mountain Landis's first acts was to ban all involved players for life. Strict rules prohibiting gambling persist to this day (See Pete Rose).

Reliant Energy officially stamped its name on every building in the Astrodome complex Thursday, including the new football stadium and the venerable Dome itself.
At a cost of $300 million, it's the biggest such naming deal of all time.
It also completes the branding of every professional stadium in Houston with a corporate name, following a nationwide trend of naming buildings as premium promotional tools.
With Compaq Center, Enron Field and now Reliant Stadium, some say Houston actually has kept some dignity in this crunch of commercialism.

VALDEZ, Alaska - A tanker ran aground on a reef and ripped holes in its hull Friday, gushing millions of gallons of thick crude oil into the pristine Prince William Sound.
The Exxon Valdez, a 987-foot tanker owned by Exxon Shipping Co. Inc., struck Bligh Reef about 25 miles from Valdez, the northernmost ice-free port in the United States, spilling an estimated 270,000 barrels or 11.3 million gallons of oil into the Pacific Ocean, Coast Guard spokesmen said.
The accident was called the worst spill in U.S. history.
Opponents of further development of Arctic oil fields quickly seized on the spill as evidence of what they perceive as the environmental risks involved.
By early Friday evening, the spill was about five miles long and 500 feet wide, said Petty Officer John Gonzales, a spokesman for the Coast Guard station in Valdez.

A Pentagon intelligence analyst resigned one day after terrorists bombed the destroyer Cole in Yemen, protesting that his superiors had ignored his warnings of an imminent threat to American forces in the region, senators and defense officials said today.
The resignation of the analyst -- who monitored terrorist threats in the region for the Defense Intelligence Agency -- raised new questions on Capitol Hill about whether the Pentagon and intelligence agencies could have done more to avert the attack on the Cole, which killed 17 sailors and wounded 39 on Oct. 12.
The analyst, identified as Kie C. Fallis, had not warned of a specific threat against the Cole or of an attack in Yemen, defense officials said.
Rather, they said, he concluded from intelligence reports that there was a strong possibility of an attack and that military commanders had not done enough to protect American forces in the region.
Senior Pentagon officials testified today during House and Senate hearings that at times became contentious. And officials also disclosed that American intelligence agencies had issued two other warnings of a terrorist attack in the region -- one the day before the Cole was bombed, the second hours afterward.
The Central Intelligence Agency issued a general warning on Oct. 11 that an attack on ''U.S. interests and Jewish tourists'' in the region was likely, one senior government official said. The second warning, issued by the National Security Agency, was more specific, citing the possibility of an attack based on the movement of a suspected terrorist in Yemen, according to a senior defense official.

ONE stadium opens for public worship in three weeks, and another scratched the surface Thursday in the very shadow of the Astrodome, a now-vacant and benign and brooding presence.
As you walked to the tent where not only a stage and food courts had been established but also exhibits and photographs, you had to be struck by the closeness of the new stadium to the old. From where the engineers indicated the 50-yard line would be, the Astrodome seemed so near that Warren Moon could have hit it with a pass.
Moon was one of six former Oilers to lend their personal support to Thursday's show, which started the construction clock. The stadium will be finished in 30 months, with a design, McNair said, "That will bring the outdoors indoors. The retractable roof will illuminate. The glass walls will let in light."
The theme of the program was "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," which made the presence of former County Judge Bill Elliott special. He is the only survivor of the group that broke ground nearly 40 years ago for the Astrodome, by firing bullets from real Colt .45s.
In a photo of the dignitaries, several appear to be aiming carefully and did manage to hit the ground without blowing off any toes.

Isoroku Yamamoto
Naval Marshal General Isoroku Yamamoto (4 April 1884 – 18 April 1943) was the commander-in-chief of the Combined Fleet during World War II, a graduate of the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy and a student of the U.S. Naval War College and of Harvard University (1919–1921).
Yamamoto held several important posts in the Imperial Japanese Navy, and undertook many of its changes and reorganizations, especially its development of naval aviation. He was the commander-in-chief during the decisive early years of the Pacific War and so was responsible for major battles such as Pearl Harbor and Midway. He died during an inspection tour of forward positions in the Solomon Islands when his aircraft (a G4M Betty bomber) was shot down during an ambush by American P-38 Lightning fighter planes. His death was a major blow to Japanese military morale during World War II.

Bill Gates' appointment of longtime friend and confidant Steve Ballmer as president of Microsoft marks a return to company roots for both senior executives.
Gates said he wants to return to the product side of Microsoft, which he, Paul Allen and Harvard colleague Monte Davidoff started 23 years ago by authoring a version of the BASIC programming language for the first mass-marketed personal computer.
Ballmer, who had been executive vice president for sales and support, will assume more day-to-day operational oversight, similar to the responsibilities he had when he started work at Microsoft as operations chief and the company's 28th employee in June 1980.

I remember having dreams when I last slept but I can remember absolutely no details. Except, maybe something to do with my imaginary girlfriend, Lily. For a while I have been wondering if they can also manipulate my half-asleep dreams too. Those are those first dreams I remember having when I am drifting off to sleep. I have never really thought of them as dreams though, rather more like random thoughts that go through my mind as I drift off. Last night, I have two such thoughts that stuck with me when I woke up minutes or seconds later. The first one was of Senator Carl Levin standing in front of me either in an elevator or waiting for an elevator. He said something about how my "reading was correct." The second scene was of Lily telling me of some endearing quality about herself.
This imaginary girlfriend routine is kind of fun, but with all these actors around me, who knows what is the reality.

Timing is everything.
Three years ago Compaq Computer Corp. spent $5.4 million to rename the Summit for six years, which seems like a bargain in today's madly escalating market of sports venue naming rights.
Compaq bought a permanent, eye-catching billboard on the Southwest Freeway and countless mentions on television and radio and in the newspaper. Every concert that comes to Compaq Center promotes the arena in its ads. Bob Costas and other broadcasters say the name coast-to-coast during national Rockets telecasts.
"It's been a tremendous investment for us," said Steve Huey, vice president of marketing communications for Compaq.
As companies and teams have realized the value of naming rights, especially in the last two or three years, the prices have skyrocketed.
Last year, the rights to Enron Field fetched $100 million over 30 years, and the professional football stadium could double that. Naming a proposed downtown basketball arena might cost $5.4 million - for a single year.
By the end of 2001, if voters approve public funding for the arena, the owners of Houston's three major sports franchises could have contracts, when combined, worth half a billion dollars to name their new facilities.
Houston-based Reliant Energy is believed to be an early front-runner, but serious negotiations with interested parties are just beginning, team sources said. There has been interest from several corporations, national and international.
