Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

So I think it is in Britain where, to refer to the collective world population, you would use 'millions' instead of 'billions,' as we say in the U.S.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000000000_%28number%29

In modern ('short scale') English language usage, it is usually called a billion (although in many other languages and 'long scale' usage, a billion means a million millions (or 1,000,000,000,000), instead of a thousand millions).

"Star Trek: The Next Generation"
Captain's Holiday (1990)

Original Air Date: 31 March 1990

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain%27s_Holiday

"Captain's Holiday" is the title of an episode from the third season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The episode introduces the character of Vash, who would appear in the later TNG episode "Q-Pid" and the DS9 episode "Q-Less".

After being urged by Counselor Troi and the rest of the crew to take a break, Captain Picard reluctantly agrees to take a vacation at Risa, a pleasure planet which is dedicated to providing tourists with a resort experience. Just after arriving, Picard is kissed by a woman he has never met. After she leaves, saying "Welcome to Risa," he says to himself, "A simple handshake would have sufficed." Having arrived, Picard attempts to relax poolside, but is constantly interrupted by women coming to ask if he wants company. He tells the fifth one no, she replies that she is confused for he says he wants no company, yet he displays the Horgon. The Horgon is a souvenir requested by Riker, but the Horgon is really a symbol of sexuality and by displaying it, Picard is letting everyone know that he is in search of sexual coupling. After he puts the souvenir away he is rudely interrupted by Sovak, who is a Ferengi, and a human woman named Vash, who was the same woman that kissed Picard. Sovak accuses Picard of conspiring with Vash, who has stolen a valuable optical disc.

Picard has no interest in the quarrel, although he finds the woman intriguing, and leaves. But just as he heads to his room, Vash secretly puts the very optical disc Sovak is seeking in Picard's pocket.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vash_%28Star_Trek%29

Vash is a character in the fictional Star Trek universe who appeared in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine [1]. Vash was played by actress Jennifer Hetrick.

Her first appearance was in the Next Generation episode "Captain's Holiday", where she was introduced as an outlaw and tomb raider who struck up a romance with Captain Jean-Luc Picard. She would return in the episode "Qpid", in which she took part in Q's Robin Hood fantasy as Maid Marian. At the end of the episode, she left with Q to explore the universe, but eventually wound up abandoned in the Gamma Quadrant, where she was picked up by a Runabout from the station Deep Space Nine in the episode "Q-Less", where she attempted to auction off many of the rarities she discovered in the Gamma Quadrant. This led to near-calamity, as one of the items turned out to be an unstable life form. After this incident, she left DS9 to pursue riches elsewhere.

Vash appears in the DS9 Millennium novel series. In Greg Cox's story "The Worst Of Both Worlds" (part of the trade paperback collection, Glass Empires), a Mirror Universe counterpart of Vash appears. She is a member of the human resistance forces attempting to overthrow the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. She is eventually captured and assimilated by the Borg.

While it seemed, at times, that she would reform her roguish ways and return to the legitimate study of archaeology, she continually gravitated toward the dark side of the law. It can be argued that she is one of the most atypical human characters from The Next Generation, as she was more rebellious and profit-driven than many of the show's characters.

The character of Vash was created by Ira Steven Behr.

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Vash

Vash was a Human archaeologist and former member of the Federation Archaeology Council in the 24th century and considered by many to be a profiteer.

Vash's primary goal was not to gain knowledge about ancient cultures, but to sell their artifacts for a profit. To this end she frequently used methods that were considered unscrupulous by the scientific community, including visting many archaeological sites that were barred to outsiders such as Sarthong V. (TNG: "Captain's Holiday")

Her shady ethics, and consistent sale of priceless artifacts, twice got her dismissed from the Federation Archaeological Council. Her professional choices were also the reason she was not welcome on several worlds. Vash was banned from the Royal Museum on Epsilon Hydra VII, was a persona non grata on Betazed and had a "dead or alive" (preferably dead) warrant issued for her on Myrmidon because she had stolen the crown of the First Mother. Though Professor Woo would offer her reinstatement to the Council, and a lecture position at the Daystrom Institute in 2369, Vash made it clear that between knowledge and profit, she would choose profit every time. (TNG: "Qpid"; DS9: "Q-Less")

For five years in the middle of her career, until approximately 2366, Vash worked as an assistant to Dr. Samuel Estragon while he devoted his life to searching for the legendary Tox Uthat. After his death in the 2360s Vash continued the search using his notes and ultimately found the Tox Uthat in 2366 on the planet Risa where it had been hidden by its creator. (TNG: "Captain's Holiday")

It was on Risa that Vash also met Captain Jean-Luc Picard, himself on shore leave from the USS Enterprise-D. After initial conflict the two found themselves kindred spirits of a sort and began a romantic relationship.

Vash took advantage of Picard's presence to distract and foil Sovak, a Ferengi, who had occasionally been employed by Estragon for certain purposes – not always legitimate ones. Sovak was determined to recover the Tox Uthat for himself in order to sell it, in addition to being infatuated with Vash. Unknown to Sovak, and for a time to Picard, Vash had uncovered the Uthat before either of them had arrived. Picard eventually discovered the deception and was instrumental in the ultimate fate of the Uthat.

Picard and Vash parted, recognizing that their lifestyles were incompatible. But their attraction was heartfelt, and each continued to remember the other fondly. (TNG: "Captain's Holiday")

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-Pid_%28TNG_episode%29

Q-Pid is an episode from the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was the 20th episode of the 4th season, aired on April 22, 1991.

Q returns to repay Captain Picard for saving him in "Déjà Q." Picard requests nothing, so Q decides to save Picard from himself by testing Picard's love for his old flame Vash.

On stardate 44741.9, Captain Picard is preparing to give a seminar to several experts in archaeology, including Kloff-Von-Droff, Swizer, and McFarland (Picard notes that they are "giants in the field of archaeology"). However, his ex-girlfriend Vash appears (see "Captain's Holiday") before the conference aboard the Enterprise. Vash states that she came in through the "window". Vash instigates an argument (asking why he never spoke of her with his friends), and although Picard still loves Vash, he is not willing to apologize.

After the dispute, Q appears and notices that Picard has fallen in love with Vash, but Picard denies this. Q is determined to show Picard the danger of his attraction to Vash. Q transports the bridge crew to medieval England where Captain Picard is Robin Hood and the bridge crew are the merry men (Worf, however says "Sir, I protest! I am not a merry man!").

Q assumes the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham and has imprisoned Vash, now Maid Marian. Picard must rescue Vash as she is sentenced to die for treason.

At the end, Picard frees Vash and admits that he loves her. Vash loves him too, but she goes away with Q, who has become intrigued by her.

Some thoughts and observations as I watched the 1984 "Gremlins" on DVD a couple days ago:

he's singing. he does that sometimes

that was large snowman the dog broke

the sword fell off the wall

curious expression on billy's mother as jimmy stewart was running through that scene towards the end of it's a wonderful life

she comments that it's a sad movie.

the sword must always fall off the wall

and that guy needs a certain kind of dame

clark gable as race car driver

poster of the road warrior on wall next to tv

it's true. the suicide rate is always the highest around the holidays.

in the scene at 00:51:50, the thought suddenly occurred to me that the photos on the wall as she is walking up the stairs is of Ron Reagan, Jr.

kingston falls

dorry's tavern
doesn't imdb have dorian?

prince and wilson tennis rackets next to each other on the wall as "Billy" is fighting the "Gremlin" leader. I wonder about that crossbow hit he takes in the arm and I wonder about certain scars on my arms. They aren't very noticable and I think are very old bullet wounds. One of them might be more recent though and might actually be a power drill wound, similar to on my hand, next to my middle finger.

gizmo in a pink corvette, as he remembers that scene with Gable talking about a certain kind of guy needs a certain kind of dame

I wonder if the color pattern of that scarf gizmo was in as Phoebe was holding him means something

That scarf made me think it might be something to do with Scotland.

Just as I wrote that, I wondered again why I "remember" that Amanda was originally from Aberdeen.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_clan

Scottish clans (from Old Gaelic clann, children), give a sense of identity and shared descent to people in Scotland and to their relations throughout the world, with a formal structure of Clan Chiefs officially registered with the court of the Lord Lyon, King of Arms which controls the heraldry and Coat of Arms. Each clan has its own tartan patterns, usually dating to the 19th century, and members of the clan may wear kilts, skirts, sashes, ties, scarves, or other items of clothing made of the appropriate tartan as a badge of membership and as a uniform where appropriate.

Clans identify with geographical areas originally controlled by the Chiefs, usually with an ancestral castle or manor, and clan gatherings form a regular part of the social scene.

I noted this when I saw the clan Campbell because it made me think of George Campbell from the Wainwright. The painting of this guy resembles basically that scarf "Gizmo" was in as Phoebe was holding him. I also have a "memory" of Jeanine Bowman's taking some photos of Jeanine and me and I was wearing a shirt that looked like that.

I can't consciously remember when I watched this movie but I know I have seen it. It also reminds me of that scene in the 1987 "Untouchables" where Costner is standing at the bridge looking at the water.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Its_a_wonderful_life

It's a Wonderful Life is a 1946 American film produced and directed by Frank Capra and based on the short story, "The Greatest Gift" written by Philip Van Doren Stern.

The film takes place in the fictional town of Bedford Falls shortly after World War II and stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man whose attempted suicide on Christmas Eve gains the attention of a guardian angel, Clarence Odbody (or Oddbody) (Henry Travers) who is sent to help him in his hour of need. Most of the film is told through flashbacks spanning George's entire life and narrated by Franklin and Joseph, unseen Angels who are preparing Clarence for his mission to save George. Through these flashbacks we see all the people whose lives have been touched by George and the difference he has made to the community in which he lives.

The film is regarded as a classic and is a staple of Christmas TV around the world, although due to its high production costs and high standard of competition at the box office it failed to return a profit on release and financially was considered a flop.[2] Although not an Oscar winner at the time it has been since named by the American Film Institute one of the best films ever made and was placed number one on the AFI's 100 Years... 100 Cheers list of the most inspirational American films of all time.

I assume that I had Phoebe recite those lines specifically about people opening up their wrists around the holidays because it represents how I was going to open up my cabin to the non-atmosphere of the Jupiter moon Callisto before my oxygen supply ran out. I found a source of oxygen though, and my family would recognize that Phoebe's line represented that I was grateful to still be alive and that Phoebe was special to me.

I've read it before, I think that Jane Wyman's first husband was named Futterman, but it just clicked in my mind, because I saw the movie again for the first time in 10 years that I can remember, that there was a husband and wife in "Gremlins" named "Futterman." When I was watching that scene with the woman named Futterman, I was thinking, wondering, if she represents something about Nancy Reagan, but I couldn't figure out who her husband might represent. But the reason I must have been thinking about Nancy is because they were both married to Ronald Reagan and Nancy is my step-grandmother while Jane is my maternal grandmother. The "Murray Futterman" character is probably just somebody I created to establish certain details about the origins of "Gremlins."

I was thinking more about the scene where the "Futterman" woman makes that large expression with her eyes as I read this part and I assume I did that so Jane would know, if she saw it, that I was signaling to her. Something like that.

http://www.jane-wyman.com/

Wyman's roles demonstrated her wide-ranging skills, whether sensitively communicating mainly with her eyes in her portrayal of deaf-mute rape victim Belinda MacDonald, or singing the Oscar-winning song, "In the Cool Cool Cool of the Evening," with Bing Crosby in Frank Capra's musical comedy Here Comes The Groom (1951), or playing the nasty mother in Falcon Crest. Wyman also worked with other noteworthy directors, such as Alfred Hitchcock on Stage Fright (1950), and with Michael Curtiz on The Story of Will Rogers (1952).

I always think of Lesa Jewell when I see a photo of Jane Wyman, even a relatively recent photo of Jane, and Lesa Jewell, in turn, from my artificial and symbolic memory, reminds me of the 1955 "Lorraine" in the 1985 "Back To The Future."

I guess that "Gremlins 2" explains what happens to the "Futtermans" when the "Gremlins" drives the plow into their house. I don't remember.

Pink Floyd Lyrics

Coming Back To Life Lyrics

Where were you when I was burned and broken
While the days slipped by from my window watching
Where were you when I was hurt and helpless
Because the things you say and the things you do surround me
While you were hanging yourself on someone else's words
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun

Lost in thought and lost in time
While the seeds of lifeand the seeds of change were planted
Outside the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life

I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the waiting had begun
And headed straight..into the shining sun
