Memorable quotes for
Planet of the Apes (1968)

Dr. Zaius: I see you've brought the female of your species. I didn't realize that man could be monogamous.

George Taylor: On this planet, it's easy.

I have been wondering today, as I was walking outside earlier, about that "memory" I have of Stacy Graham. Her father brought her, and her sibling I think, to visit us when we lived in that trailer near the drive-in. My room was a mess and I can still almost visualize her standing there in my room. I "remember" she told me I had changed. They left after a while but they came back because her father said she was crying and wanted to stay longer.

I wonder if this all represents something about 1975. Something about me being stressed out because I wasn't sure if I was going to be successful in diverting the comet. My team sent me to visit family for a while and I stayed with Phoebe's family too and that helped me to regain focus and I was determined to succeed in my mission.

I just tonight watched the 1976 "Midway" on television and I am certain I have not watched that movie in the past 10 years, but I know I have seen it before. The plot element in "Midway," I think, of "Captain Garth" and his son, represents me primarily, in terms of my youth, but also in terms of my experience.

I have been thinking that after I left the planet Mars, I hit that meteor storm, which caused a lot of damage to my ship and left me with 3 broken ribs.

"Tom Garth's" plane caught on fire from anti-aircraft fire and he was seriously injured and Charlton Heston's character was killed at the end of the movie. I found myself pondering a scene where Heston's character is flying along in his bomber and he seems to be looking into the camera while in the background someone else was saying something about landing on the "Enterprise" after their bombing run. His plane was shot up and he seemed to have been killed in a failed landing on the aircraft carrier.

I have also been thinking that the scene in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" "Family" with "Picard" arguing with his brother, actually has some kind of bearing on me in 1975, and perhaps, a conversation I had with one or more of my older brothers, as well as the context of when I returned from Africa in 1987. I have been thinking that I told Phoebe, in 1975, when she wanted to know what was wrong with me, that I was afraid I wasn't going to graduate because I was failing a class and I was feeling down. I have been thinking that is based on how I was failing to successfully navigate through the simulations we had created for the comet. If I failed to navigate through that comet on my 4 flights, then it would have not been diverted.

That's a nice touch there at the end of the 1976 'Midway' with the quote from Winston Churchill.

Aubrey Fitch is featured early on in the 1976 "Midway." That same actor portrays "Rikers" father in "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

Cracking a Japanese code leads Adm. Nimitz (Henry Fonda) and Navy officers (Charlton Heston, James Coburn) to Yamamoto's fleet in the Battle of Midway, June 1942.

I recognize the date 5/1/1967 as when I first flew a fighter jet by myself. The namesake of FFG-34 was also a U.S. Navy aviator and I assume I scheduled this ship's commissioning to point to the date I first flew that jet.

USS Aubrey Fitch (FFG 34)

USS AUBREY FITCH was the 26th OLIVER HAZARD PERRY class guided missile frigate and the eleventh ship in that class built by Bath Iron Works in Maine.

Commissioned: October 9, 1982

About the Ship’s Name:

Aubrey Wray Fitch - born in St. Ignace, Mich., on 11 June 1883 - entered the Naval Academy in the summer of 1902 and graduated on 12 February 1906. After serving the two years of sea duty then required by law before commissioning (in the armored cruiser PENNSYLVANIA and the torpedo boat CHAUNCEY) Fitch became as ensign on 13 February 1908 and served afloat in RAINBOW and CONCORD before receiving instruction in torpedoes at the Naval Torpedo Station, Newport, R.I., in the school conducted on board the old cruiser MONTGOMERY.

He reported for aviation instruction at the Naval Air Station (NAS), Pensacola, Fla., in June 1929 and there won his wings as a naval aviator on 4 February 1930.

After V-J Day, Vice Admiral Fitch assumed duty as the Superintendant of the Naval Academy on 16 August 1945 and held that post until 15 January 1947, with collateral duty as Commandant, Severn River Command. The first airman to head the Naval Academy, Fitch was instrumental in establishing the Department of Aeronautics, authorized by the Navy on 28 November 1945.

Subsequent to heading the Academy, Fitch served briefly in the office of the Undersecretary of the Navy before becoming the senior member of the Naval Clemency and Prison Inspection Board in March 1947. He was so serving when he was relieved of all active duty on 1 July 1947. Admiral Fitch died in his adopted state, Maine, on 22 May 1978.

Customer Reviews

This review is from: Midway (Collector's Edition) (DVD)

Charlton Heston is terrific as Captain Matthew Garth, the fictional character in the script, who has to deal with his son (Edward Albert), in love with a Japanese-American girl (Christina Kokubo), who has been interned with her parents. This little bit of "romance" I imagine was included in the film to round out the "human interest", and though I could have lived without this non-historical addition, it is peripheral to the action.

Wish You Were Here is a concept album by Pink Floyd. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios between January and July, 1975 and released on September 15, 1975 (see 1975 in music), the album would later be regarded as one of Pink Floyd's greatest albums. Its lyrics, composed by Roger Waters and concerning the music industry, question the market-oriented record companies' lack of understanding and interest for musicians. The album also pays tribute to Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd's former guitarist and chief songwriter, especially "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", and the title track itself.

Pink Floyd Lyrics

Wish You Were Here Lyrics

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
