A Proclamation
America was founded on the principles of liberty and the rule of law. And throughout our Nation's history, the preservation of individual rights has been dependent upon the dedication of our people to liberty and the institutionalization of its principles in the law of the land.
Our forefathers' dedication to liberty is clearly expressed in this Nation's great Charters of Freedom: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These documents, which are the very foundation of American law, guarantee certain inalienable rights and privileges to every citizen. Among these are: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of contract, the right to assemble and petition, the right of property ownership, and the right to due process of law.
This year marks the Nation's twenty-fourth annual celebration of Law Day, U.S.A.—a special day for reflection on our heritage of individual freedom and for rededication to maintaining, through law, the principles of liberty which govern this land.
Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, invite the American people to celebrate Friday, May 1, 1981, as Law Day, U.S.A., and to mark its observance with programs and ceremonies as befits our great heritage of liberty under law.
I urge clergymen of all faiths to bring to public attention through sermons and suitable programs the moral and ethical dimensions of law and liberty.
I also urge schools, civic, service and fraternal organizations, public bodies, libraries, the courts, the legal profession, all media of public information and interested individuals and organizations to participate in the observance through programs which will focus on the Law Day 1981 theme: Law-the Language of Liberty. And then I've got another canyon, right next door, if you'd like to see that, that we've improved. It will give you a flavor for the ranch.
But what we're trying to do is to make these really beautiful cutouts available for anybody who wants to walk up in here. I think you'll see that we make them pretty accessible without disturbing the natural beauty of the place.

But what we're trying to do is to make these really beautiful cutouts available for anybody who wants to walk up in here. I think you'll see that we make them pretty accessible without disturbing the natural beauty of the place.

Travel information has grown explosively on the Internet in recent months, making it easy to roam for days through this computerized world.
The World Wide Web, the user-friendly portion of the Internet that's loaded with photos and graphics, is the place to go. There are thousands of Web sites on travel, with more being added daily, ranging from those created by major corporations to quirky travel diaries by individuals.

A full-grown hippopotamus can pretty much swallow a rubber raft whole. Tip it over? Like a bathtub toy. Chow down on Homo sapiens? Like Reese's Pieces. It might be prudent, then, for any sane person to adopt a credo something like "Don't paddle a rubber raft through hippo-infested waters."
Richard Bangs isn't much for credos. Certainly not cautious ones that would dictate a life bereft of challenges. Which is why, one day in 1981, Bangs gingerly threaded a raft down a stretch of Tanzania's Kilombero River among — hold onto your paddles, folks — 2,000 hippos.
That site, Mungo Park, lived for two ahead-of-its-time years before it begat Microsoft's juggernaut travel site Expedia and such spin-offs as Expedia Travels magazine — Bangs was the publisher — and Expedia Radio, where he was executive producer. He then continued to meld his twin passions, the potential of Internet technology and a zest for exploring places and cultures, as writer/producer for Slate magazine's Well-Traveled, MSNBC's Great Escapes, and MSN's First and Best. AUSTIN - Gov. George W. Bush was struck from a list of potential jurors in a DWI case Tuesday, a development that allowed him to avoid potentially embarrassing questions about whether he had ever climbed behind the wheel after drinking.
Alcohol had nothing to do with the reason for Bush's dismissal, however. Nor did Bush attempt to avoid jury duty.
Before Bush or any other prospective jurors were called into the courtroom, defense attorney David Wahlberg asked that Bush be struck as a juror

MADRID, Spain -- Robert Maxwell, the flamboyant billionaire who built a global publishing empire, was found dead Tuesday in waters off the Canary Islands. He reportedly fell from his 180-foot luxury yacht.
Maxwell's total holdings, estimated to generate revenue of about $2.2 billion a year, include a number of British newspapers, including the Daily Mirror, Daily Record, The Sunday Mirror, and The Sunday Mail in Scotland.
His other holdings include a 14 percent stake in the British Printing & Communications Corp., Britain's biggest printer.

`Average' guv does his duty

AUSTIN - Juror No. 536 reported to the jury pool Monday in a pearl-gray Lincoln Town Car that his security agent-driver parked, without risk, in a tow-away zone.
""I'm just an average guy showing up for jury duty," Gov. George W. Bush insisted.
Inside the Austin Coliseum, big enough to hold the 2,250-plus potential jurors, the governor joked with the woman seated next to him, a martial arts instructor from Pflugerville. He laughed and elbowed her while Travis County officials explained the jury selection process.
Bush patted the shoulder of the man seated in front of him, reached down the row of folding chairs to shake hands with others and promised one woman, a state employee, to have someone on his staff look into an unspecified problem for which she nervously sought his help.
He alternately rolled his eyes, furrowed his brow, mocked surprise and winked as court employees explained the seven qualifications required to serve on a jury. But when they got to qualification No. 3 -being of sound mind - he raised up off his chair as if to leave and told reporters he had a problem with that one.
And when it came time to get his specific court assignment, the governor cut in front of several hundred others, to no one's protest, saying he had to get to work.
Although Bush said he would be glad to serve, he doesn't expect to be selected when he reports to Judge David Crain's Travis County Court No. 3 on Oct. 8.

Jed is looking for a beau for his gorgeous daughter, so Drysdale and Jane set Elly up with Fred Penrod, a young accountant at the bank. However, no one can seem to get his name straight. Meanwhile, Lafe Crick returns to plant a paw-paw tree in the back yard, really to look for the Clampett fortune he still believes is buried in the back yard. He tries to ensure that the Clampett fortune will be shared with him, by trying to get Jed to set Elly up with his son and by getting Fred to leave, making him believe Elly is his twin sister, just bigger and tougher. Fred meets Elly, and they hit it off right away. And Lafe volunteers to dig a hole for the tree, hoping to find money, and ends up hitting oil four times. Lafe says he plugged up the hole the oil came out of, but it backs up and ends up coming out of the fountain in the pool.

`Average' guv does his duty

AUSTIN - Juror No. 536 reported to the jury pool Monday in a pearl-gray Lincoln Town Car that his security agent-driver parked, without risk, in a tow-away zone.
""I'm just an average guy showing up for jury duty," Gov. George W. Bush insisted.
Inside the Austin Coliseum, big enough to hold the 2,250-plus potential jurors, the governor joked with the woman seated next to him, a martial arts instructor from Pflugerville. He laughed and elbowed her while Travis County officials explained the jury selection process.
Bush patted the shoulder of the man seated in front of him, reached down the row of folding chairs to shake hands with others and promised one woman, a state employee, to have someone on his staff look into an unspecified problem for which she nervously sought his help.
He alternately rolled his eyes, furrowed his brow, mocked surprise and winked as court employees explained the seven qualifications required to serve on a jury. But when they got to qualification No. 3 -being of sound mind - he raised up off his chair as if to leave and told reporters he had a problem with that one.
And when it came time to get his specific court assignment, the governor cut in front of several hundred others, to no one's protest, saying he had to get to work.
Although Bush said he would be glad to serve, he doesn't expect to be selected when he reports to Judge David Crain's Travis County Court No. 3 on Oct. 8.

SAN FRANCISCO - AT&T Corp. Chairman Robert Allen Tuesday called Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates a tough competitor who would ""do virtually anything to kill the rest of us."
In remarks to the Commonwealth Club, a current affairs forum in San Francisco, Allen said Gates was ""very smart" and that ""we do respect him."
But in response to a question from the audience, Allen added ""one has to be very suspicious."
""I'm not a great student of Bill Gates. I take much of what he says with a grain of salt because Bill would like to be . . . the center of gravity for the whole world," Allen said. ""He's totally dedicated to his work and will do virtually anything to kill the rest of us. Bill Gates can be your partner and be your enemy at the same time."
Microsoft recently struck a deal with AT&T to be the premier browser on AT&T's WorldNet Internet service, much to the chagrin of rival browser maker Netscape Communications Corp.

NEW YORK - Telecommunications giant AT&T Corp. and software superpower Microsoft Corp. teamed up Thursday to package each other's Internet products, giving Microsoft a leg up in its Web browser battle with Netscape Communications Corp.
Personal computer users who have Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system will get the Redmond, Wash., company's "Internet Explorer 3.0" when they sign up for AT&T's Internet access service, AT&T WorldNet Service, the companies said.
AT&T said it designated Internet Explorer 3.0, the latest version of Microsoft's software for accessing the Web, as the default browser for WorldNet.
Before Thursday, AT&T had offered Netscape Navigator as the sole browser software for WorldNet.
