Gates Makes A Decision, His Own Way

The billionaire sat by the campfire. Guards patrolled the perimeter to protect him and his party from wild animals. The fire crackled, embers shooting into the night sky.
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates was on a three-week photo safari in Africa with his fiancee, Melinda French, and five other couples. But as night creatures prowled in the distance, Gates' attention was focused on politics back home in Washington state.
Gates was talking with Leroy Hood, chairman of the University of Washington's department of molecular biotechnology, an opponent of Initiatives 601 and 602, measures that would restrain state spending. Hood told Gates the initiatives were trouble for education in Washington state.
When Gates made his announcement Oct. 12, many speculated that Gates was simply responding to pressure from his mother, University of Washington Regent Mary Gates.
In August and September, Gates traveled with the group through Kenya, Tanzania and Zaire in what was his longest vacation.
The group traveled in Land Rovers, slept in tents and sat around campfires at night.
On the morning of Oct. 12, Grow was faxed a three-paragraph statement by Gates, sent by Microsoft's public relations office.
Grow put out the word to the local press. Within 30 minutes he was sending the story to the national press, including The New York Times and CNN.

Fleet Admiral of the United States Navy (FADM), or more commonly referred to as Fleet Admiral, is a five-star flag officer rank and is presently considered the highest possible rank in the United States Navy.
