This Is What I Think.

F = m * a

I can now still visualize in my mind that moment from years ago.

The way I remember the circumstances is that I was standing in my US Navy uniform to answer the door in my barracks where I was attending FC-C School in Dam Neck Virginia.

That was winter time and I forget the name of that style of black uniform but looking on the internet I guess they call it the blue service uniform. The one with the long sleeves and the normal neck-tie. I guess that's been phased out now for the one with the khaki-shirt.

Anyway, I answered the door and a sailor handed me a document that informed me of my results from the recent enlisted examination I had taken for the FC2 rating. I was an FC3 at the time as I had been before starting the FC-A school curriculum. Back in Great Lakes while attending FC-A school I had participated in the Navy-wide examination. According to documents I found today on the internet that first exam I had taken must have been in September 1986 if they were following the standard schedule.

So I excitedly opened the document to learn that I had scored just 1.5 points below what I needed for advancement.

I thought I had written here in my journal about that but I can't find it.

So I didn't get promoted to FC2. Instead, I had to wait until the first week after arrival to the USS Wainwright CG-28 in Charleston South Carolina to advance to FC2. I can still visualize that too standing there in my dungaree working uniform as Captain Chandler promoted a group of us. My co-workers were immediately disappointed upon my arrival to Missile Plot to learn they wouldn't have a junior sailor to boss around.

HAL 9000: Excuse me, Frank.

Frank: What is it, Hal?

HAL 9000: We've got the transmission from your parents coming in.

Frank: Fine. Put it on in here, please? Take me in a bit.

HAL 9000: Certainly.

Frank's dad: [recorded video] Hello, Frank.

Frank's mom: [recorded video] Happy birthday, darling.

Frank's dad: [recorded video] Happy birthday, many happy returns.

Frank: A bit higher, Hal.

Frank's dad: [recorded video] Mother and I are both feeling wonderful. Ray and Sally were going to be here too but at the last minute Ray's back went bad on him again.

Frank's mom: [recorded video] How do you like your cake, dear?

Frank's dad: [recorded video] It's great, isn't it? Sorry you can't join us. Oh, I ran into Bob the other day. He said to be sure and wish you a happy birthday.

Frank's mom: [recorded video] All my students made me promise to send their best wishes too. You know, they talk about you all the time in class. Frank, you're a big celebrity in the second grade. You know, we were on television last week.

Frank's dad: [recorded video] Oh, yes, yes, your mother and I and Dave's parents were interviewed about what we thought about illustrious son. You can imagine what we told them. I think it's being broadcast next Thursday. Perhaps you'll be able to listen in.

Frank's mom: [recorded video] We're thrilled about Elaine and Bill, dear. I'll be glad to get the present for you but please tell me how much I can spend.

Frank's dad: [recorded video] Oh, yes, Frank, about your AGS-19 payments I think I straightened it out for you. I talked to the accounting office in Houston yesterday and they said that you should be receiving your higher rates of pay by next month. Well, Frank, I can't think of anything else to say.

Frank's mom: [recorded video] Oh, give my love to Dave.

Frank's dad: [recorded video] Oh yes, be sure to give him our best regards. We wish you the very happiest of birthdays. All the best, son.

Frank's mom and dad: [recorded video] [singing] Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you

Frank's dad: [recorded video] See you next Wednesday.

HAL 9000: Happy birthday, Frank.
