Camp Couchdale
Summer Camp when I was selected to represent Ashdown, Arkansas, at a camp with students from across the state
One night, that summer of year 1981, the organizers gathered us into a large room for a dance
I will never know the precise calendar-day that happened
I was still in the 11th grade at Ashdown High School when I started talking to the US Navy recruiter in 1983
I was quickly accepted into the Advanced Electronics Field for enlisted (to begin 3 days after I graduated 12th grade of high-school in 1984), which promised automatic advancement to paygrade E-3 on day 1 of active-duty US Navy. And then automatic advancement to enlisted paygrade E-4 as Petty Officer Third Class {non-commissioned officer} upon graduation from what the US Navy calls 'A School'.
I chose the Electronics Technician (ET) rating for enlisted, because that had been my favorite hobby for most of my youth. That ambition ended a few months after basic-training when I fell asleep in self-paced class in Orlando, Florida, in Basic Electricity and Electronics School, a prerequisite for ET/A school, and it progressed negatively from there.
My records clearly mark the calendar-day 09/27/1984 as a red-letter day in my progress towards being unceremoniously shipped off to the US Navy fleet as an undesignated, paygrade E-3 seafarer. I had been doing great in that school before then. I had a very high grade point average. I was exceedingly faster than the computerized pace set for me by the system. I recall talk of an academic award for me
Somehow, after 15-months in the fleet, the command of my ship must have convinced them to let me back into that school, although I had switched AEF rates to the Fire Controlman rating, having completed the personnel advancement requirements for enlisted Fire Control Technician (Missiles) Petty Officer Third Class (FTM3).
They had just combined the ratings back from FTM and FTG to FC, it's original designation until about the 1950s, when radar and computers became part of the Fire Control Solution for US Navy warships.
I returned to the AEF A-school curriculum as an FC3, US Navy, and 20 years old. Florida still allowed alcohol consumption by under-21 people. The state of Illinois did not allow under-21 alcohol consumption and I could not even visit the enlisted, base night-club. I turned 21 years old just 2 days before I graduated FC/A school at Great Lakes on 11/4/1986. Traveling from there to Dam Neck, Virginia, for my specialist, technical school, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the enlisted, base night-club there allowed female strippers performing at nights there. That was entertaining. Drank a lot of beer there but made it through training without any problems and left there for USS Wainwright CG-28 and back to the US Navy fleet in Charleston, South Carolina, where I was glad to return. Much different working environment than my previous fleet assignment. And mostly boring. After countless hours standing bridge-watch on the USS Taylor FFG-50, US Navy, and countless hours standing on the flight-deck as that huge Seahawk helicopter plopped down in a hurricane of wind just a few feet from me, the blades furiously chopping the air a few feet above my head on that very small, rolling-at-sea flight-deck, working in Missile Plot with less than exciting. Not to mention the people, with nothing close to my sort of experiences the past three years when I arrived there

As I was writing about my memories of Phoebe at Camp Couchdale, I was thinking about this scene from "2001." I was writing a while back about how she told me to never forget that dance where we first met.

Harvey Fletcher, (born Sept. 11, 1884, Provo, Utah, U.S.—died July 23, 1981, Provo), U.S. physicist, a leading authority in the fields of psychoacoustics and acoustical engineering.
Fletcher graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 1907 and received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago in 1911. In 1916 he joined the staff of Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he worked for 33 years, primarily in the fields of speech, music, and hearing. Much of his work on the fundamentals of psychoacoustics is described in his book Speech and Hearing (1922).
Fletcher’s research group developed and demonstrated two separate but related methods for reproducing sound: binaural sound reproduction and stereophonic reproduction. He and his team gave the first public demonstration of stereophonic sound in 1934 in New York City.

The helicopters would open the war. They had to take out Iraq's early warning net, and they had to get it all.
As he sat in his helicopter talking with his gunner, Colonel Cody saw a dusty rental car speeding over the tarmac. The sedan pulled to a stop. Col. Ben Orrell, Colonel Gray's deputy, yelled from the driver's seat of the car, "I need to talk to you."
Colonel Cody climbed down and ran to the vehicle.
