Murphy was killed during a reconnaissance mission near Asadabad, Afghanistan, while exposing himself to enemy fire in order to call in support after his four-man team came under attack by enemy forces June 28, 2005. Murphy is the first service member to receive the honor for actions during Operation Enduring Freedom and the first Navy recipient of the medal since Vietnam. The Falcon and the Snowman
The Falcon and the Snowman is a 1985 film about two young American men, Christopher Boyce (played by Timothy Hutton) and Daulton Lee (played by Sean Penn), who sold U.S. security secrets to the Soviet Union. The film is based upon the 1979 book on the same topic by Robert Lindsey, and features the theme song "This is Not America", written and performed by David Bowie and the Pat Metheny Group.
The Falcon and the Snowman is based on the true story of former altar boy and former Catholic seminary student Christopher Boyce and fellow former altar boy turned drug dealer Daulton Lee, two young men from wealthy California families who sold classified government information to the Soviet Union during the mid 1970s.
Boyce, an expert in the sport of falconry-- thus, the nickname "Falcon"-- gets a job at a civilian defense contractor (TRW, though it is called "RTX" in the movie) working in the so-called "Black Vault", a secure communication facility through which flows information on some of the most classified U.S. operations in the world. Boyce becomes disillusioned with the U.S. government through his new position, especially after reading a misrouted communiqué dealing with the CIA's (alleged) plan to depose the Prime Minister of Australia. Frustrated by this duplicity, Boyce decides to repay his government by passing classified secrets to the Soviets. Lee, a drug addict and minor smuggler sometimes called "the snowman" (in reference to his cocaine sales), agrees to actually contact and deal with the KGB on Boyce's behalf, motivated not by idealism, but by what he perceives as an opportunity to make money and eventually settle in his idea of paradise, Costa Rica.
As the pair become increasingly involved with espionage, Lee's ambition to create a major espionage business coupled with his excessive drug use began alienating the two men from each other, and their Soviet handler becomes increasingly reluctant to deal through Lee as the middleman because of Lee's periods of irrationality. Boyce wants to end the espionage so that he can attend college and meets with Lee's KGB handler to explain the situation. When Lee-- desperate to regain the Soviets' regard after realizing that the KGB no longer needs him as a courier now that they have direct contact with Boyce-- is observed tossing a note over the fence at the Soviet embassy in Mexico, he is arrested by Mexican police, and a U.S. Foreign Services officer accompanies him to the police station. When the police search his pockets and find film (from a Soviet spy camera Boyce used to photograph documents) and a postcard (used by the Soviets to show the haphazard Lee
the location of a drop zone), they produce pictures of the same location that was on the postcard, showing officers surrounding a dead man on the street: the Foreign Services officer explains that the Mexican police are trying to implicate him with the murder of a policeman, a charge Lee denies. The police drag away Lee and torture him. Hours later, he reveals finally that he is a Soviet spy... the real reason the police had been ordered to detain him. Told by the Mexican police that he will be deported, Lee is asked to where he should be deported. Lee suggests Costa Rica: the police give him a choice between the Soviet Union and the U.S.A. Lee reluctantly agrees to go back to America and is arrested as he walks across the border.
Boyce learns of Lee's arrest and, knowing that he too will soon be captured, releases his pet falcon in a field and then sits down to wait. Moments later, U.S. Marshals and FBI agents surround and capture him.
The movie ends with both Lee and Boyce in prisoner jumpsuits and shackles, flanked on either side by officers escorting them to prison.
The film has obtained some notoriety as it was overridden by a hacker named Captain Midnight while being broadcast on HBO in 1986.

And at the same time that I mention this, there is also a gap that exists by some in this industry and our military. And it's gap that is not unique to this industry but I think is somewhat indicative of that in our country. There is a sense that in many places beyond this campus, from Sunnyvale to Silicon Valley to Silicon Alley, that there are some in the digital world who dismiss the importance of national security, that some soldiers in the high-tech revolution don't fully appreciate or understand the soldiers in camouflage, that tanks and guns are somehow rusty relics of the past and may be obsolete in the new information-based world that is going to carry us into the future.
I think of this because there is one Silicon Valley executive who said about as much in an interview that he granted to the New York Times columnist Tom Friedman. It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

This was a pleasant surprise. I was disappointed though when I first saw them that they were preparing to leave. I think this is the one at the link below. I love these ships. I find myself thinking about this time a long time ago. I may have been in the 4th grade at the time, I don't remember. One of us, maybe me, accidentally made up the fold-out sofa bed with the dog still in it. She stayed in there all day. I came home from school and sat down on the sofa wondering where she was. Then I started hearing her faintly crying out, but I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from. This other neighbor kid was sitting on the couch too, we had to have been crushing her. Eventually I realized she was inside the couch and let her out. She jumped out and ran to the water bowl. I can certainly understand how that dog must have felt.

Some kind of strong message in my dream last night. Can't remember anything about it except that it had something to do with Reagan. Not sure what it meant, I remember a feeling that is hard to describer. It was of knowing unknowing. I knew what the message meant, but it took a little while for me to realize I knew what it meant and that it had something to do with me being right. It was very strong, loud maybe, or maybe just very clear. I think maybe it is something, a memory maybe, that will be clearer later. I remember last night, before I went to sleep, I was thinking to myself the crazy idea that Jane Wyman is my grandmother.
I could have sworn that I passed Tom Clancy on the sidewalk the other day and he was looking at me as he walked by.

I'm feeling more comfortable, confident even, that this stuff I am remembering is true. There is still something I am missing though. I suspect that it is something I have to figure out, to remember, to recognize, on my own. It is something I will know when I see. For a while, sometime ago, I was thinking to myself something about how this wasn't over til "the bat lady sings," but I don't know what that means precisely, other than a variation of the well-known phrase. I feel the answer is somewhere in my memory, if I could just grasp it. I felt like I almost remembered something last night, something I wrote more about in my notes, but not sure if I will put it in here. I can't remember that thought now, but it was some kind of family choice, and that half-remembered choice was reflected in something later, but I can't remember.

I had a dream I was in a room with some people watching "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." I didn't want to watch it and was dreading the scenes with Phoebe because that just made me miss her more. It is one thing to see a photo of a person you miss but watching video of them, with every little movement and every sound of their voice, reminding you of how much you miss them.

I having been having more specific thoughts about what I think are the calculations I was making to navigate into orbit of Callisto. It is all really not unlike the fire-control solutions I have talked about in the past, as associated with the Fire Control Technician of my artificial identity.
I imagine, or actually remember, that I put a lot of effort into letting gravity determine my part as I entered orbit, or at least as much as I could let gravity control my path. I probably had to make some kind of thruster burn at some point. But what I always wanted to do was to think of my navigation in terms of how sailors were dependant on the wind long ago before powered ships came into existence. The reason is that I wanted as practice as possible because I could always depend on gravity more than I could fuel, in that there was an abundance of gravity, depending on the right conditions, just like the wind. I wanted to save my fuel as much as possible in case there wasn't any wind, or gravity, as the case may be, to keep my ship moving.
I can almost visualize myself making these calculations and pondering the variables, but I can't quite put it all together enough to articulate. I imagine myself working out the variables associated with the position of Jupiter, for example, and then plotting my travel so I could apply some kind of formula that would tell me how much Jupiter was going to pull me or push me away from my target of Callisto.

I have also been thinking that the scene in the TNG "Family" with "Picard" arguing with his brother, actually has some kind of bearing on me in 1975, and perhaps, a conversation I had with one or more of my older brothers.

I have been thinking that I told Phoebe, in 1975, when she wanted to know what was wrong with me, that I was afraid I wasn't going to graduate because I was failing a class and I was feeling down. I have been thinking that is based on how I was failing to successfully navigate through the simulations we had created for the comet.
I saw all these people and I knew they were going to die if I failed.

I keep having these curious sensations that seem to be of me landing on the ground, and I assume I am strapped to a parachute because I can't see it. In these sensations, I am almost, but partially, visualizing myself looking down at my legs as I am about to hit the ground. I can see my black military boots and I am wearing what seems to be a green flight pressure suit that fighter jet pilots would wear.

I had dream that seemed to be just a few minutes before I just woke up. I can remember the details well and visualize it well but I feel there are important details I don't now remember. The detail I do remember now is that Phoebe was expecting me to meet her somewhere and I was feeling bad because I was sitting somewhere else looking at a clock and nothing that I was supposed to be there 10 minutes ago. I can visualize her sitting in some kind auditorium and she had an empty seat next to her, waiting for me. I guess that was a long time ago because she was there with her parent but I can't visualize them. I was just about to wake up and I had the strongest sense to get up and send her an email to tell her I could not find a way to get there to her but then I realized it was all just a dream and that I didn't know how to contact her anyway. I was also thinking to myself that was not the first time I had found myself in such a dilemma. There are other
details from that dream that I can visualize but that I don't understand now that I am awake.

I had a brief dream where I was in a room somewhere and I was frustrated because I could not talk to Phoebe. In the dream, I could clearly see that I was talking to Ronald Reagan and the timeframe of the dream was when he was President. I was very frustrated because Phoebe did not know where I was or even that I was going to be gone for several times. I was frustrated because she is my wife and that is not good for a marriage that I would be gone for several days and she did not even know that I was going to be gone. I can visualize from the dream where he told me about a phone line I could use for a 15-minute call so that I could let her know that I was not going to be home for a few days.
There was another dream sequence that was not as clear but that seemed to be just before I woke up. The details are vague but I was explaining to someone that Phoebe is actually my wife and that the details known about her in public are different than reality because I am and have been an undercover law enforcement officer.
