The rock world has been turned on its ear in the seven years since Pink Floyd last released an album of new material.
Then again, Pink Floyd - a British band of geezers conceived in the psychedelic '60s and nurtured in the progressive-rock '70s - was already something of an anachronism when A Momentary Lapse of Reason was released in 1987. That album went on to sell more than 2 million copies.
Come to think of it, Floyd's magnum opus, Dark Side of the Moon, still sells about a million copies a year worldwide more than 20 years after its release.
So, however tempting it might be, it would be unwise to dismiss The Division Bell - due out Tuesday on Columbia Records - as irrelevant. There is a large segment of the rock audience for whom the "alternative" is still just that, and bands such as Floyd represent the proud remnants of the prog-rock mainstream.
For proof, just listen to Houston's so-called album-rock radio stations, which still play Dark Side of the Moon and/or The Wall on a daily basis.
Or ask any of the 40,000-plus fans who will be at Rice Stadium Tuesday night for the third date on Floyd's American tour in support of The Division Bell.
"What do you want from me?" Gilmour asks grumpily on the album's introductory track. "Do you think I know something you don't know?"

Had a dream with a lot of details that I can't remember now. At one point, I was sitting at a computer and I was busy working on something and there was a lot of distraction. Someone sent me a hyperlink that I was hoping to get but didn't expect. I can still visualize the hyperlink but I can't remember the letters. The password was 'siren' or 'firehouse.' The link went to a website with a lot of photos about my real life, as I was writing the other day. Then I was sleeping in some trees but some very big dinosaurs came along and started eating the trees and I had to go somewhere else. Then I was standing on top of an alligator trying to avoid it from biting my feet and I was trying to get away from it into a house.

I feel certain that Phoebe knew I loved her very much.
I also have been thinking that she wondered though about why she could sense, either consciously or unconsciously, that I was hiding something.
She was probably getting opinions from people who knew me that were confirming that I did love her very much but it all added up to something a lot more special than she could figure out.
And this is part of what it all was. I think there is still a lot more.
There was some other important thought I wanted to note here but it just slipped my mind.

WASHINGTON -- The deputy White House counsel, a close friend of President Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton, was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday night at a park in northern Virginia.
Vincent W. Foster Jr., 48, was a senior partner at the Rose law firm in Little Rock, Ark., until earlier this year when he moved to Washington to join the Clinton administration. Clinton and Foster shared the same home town of Hope and attended the same elementary school.

Intelsat I (nicknamed Early Bird for the proverb "The early bird catches the worm") was the first (commercial) communications satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit, on April 6, 1965. By 1964, two TELSTARs, two RELAYs, and two SYNCOMs had operated successfully in space. This timing was fortunate because the Communications Satellite Corporation (COMSAT), formed as a result of the Communications Satellite Act of 1962, was in the process of contracting for their first satellite. COMSAT's initial capitalization of 200 million dollars was considered sufficient to build a system of dozens of medium-orbit satellites. WASHINGTON, April 6 -- An Early Bird communications satellite was launched front Cape Kennedy tonight, opening a new chapter in the space age.
