....in the offing, advocates of advanced propulsion saw their prospects in two novel concepts: LACE (Liquid Air Cycle Engine), an airbreathing rocket; and the scramjet, a hypersonic jet engine.
LACE sought to overcome the requirement that a rocket must carry its oxygen as a heavy quantity of liquid in an onboard tank. Instead, this concept sought to allow a rocket to get its oxygen from air in the atmosphere. Because rocket engines operate at very high pressure, no air compressor could compress the ambient air so as to allow it to flow into a thrust chamber. If the air could be liquefied, however, it would form liquid air, which could be pumped easily to high pressure. LACE sought to do this by passing the incoming air through a heat exchanger that used supercold liquid hydrogen, chilling the air into liquid form. The engine then would use the hydrogen and liquefied air as propellants.
This approach drew strong interest at Marquardt Co., a Los Angeles propulsion-research firm. In tests at Saugus, California in 1960 and 1961, Marquardt engineers successfully demonstrated a LACE design that used heat exchangers built by Garrett AiResearch. A film of those tests, shown at a conference of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences in March 1961, shows liquid air coming down in a torrent, as seen through a porthole. Marquardt went on to operate test engines with thrusts of up to 275 pounds. During these tests, LACE performed twice as well as conventional hydrogen-fueled rockets.
There were further innovations as well. Four-fifths of air is nitrogen, which does not burn. The presence of this nitrogen reduced the performance of LACE by cooling the exhaust and demanding extra liquid hydrogen to accomplish liquefaction. Oxygen, however, liquefies at 90 degrees Kelvin while nitrogen liquefies at the lower temperature of 77 degress Kelvin. Thus, by carefully controlling the heat-exchange process, oxygen in the air could be liquefied preferentially. This represented a topic for further research. In 1967, at General Dynamics, a test of this concept demonstrated 90 percent effectiveness in excluding the nitrogen.
While LACE represented a new direction in rocket research, the scramjet represented advances in the design of the ramjet. Ramjet engines showed their power during the 1950s when the Lockheed X-7, an unpiloted missile, reached Mach 4.31 or 2881 miles per hour setting a record for the flight of airbreathing engines. This was close to the speed limit of a ramjet. Air in such a ramjet, flowing initially at supersonic speeds, had to slow to subsonic velocity in order to burn the fuel. When it slows, an engine becomes hot and loses engine power.
For a ramjet to reach speeds well beyond Mach 4, this internal airflow would have to remain supersonic. This would keep the engine cool and prevent it from overheating. This also imposed the difficult problem of injecting, mixing, and burning fuel in such a supersonic airflow. Nevertheless, a number of people hoped to build such an engine, which they called a scramjet.
Scramjet advocates included Alexander Kartveli, the vice president for research and development at Republic Aviation, and Antonio Ferri, a professor at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. During World War II, Ferri had been one of Europe's leading aerodynamicists and had directed Italy's premier research facility, a supersonic wind tunnel. Kartveli was one of America's leading airplane designers, crafting such fighter aircraft as the F-84 and the F-105. During the 1950s, his focus was on another proposed fighter, the XF-103 that was to use a ramjet to reach speeds of Mach 3.7 (2450 mph) and altitudes of 75,000 feet.
Ferri, who worked as a consultant on this project, formed a close friendship with Kartveli. They complemented each other professionally; Kartveli studying issues of aircraft design, Ferri emphasizing the details of difficult problems in aerodynamics and propulsion. As they worked together on the XF-103 they each stimulated the other to think bolder thoughts. Among the boldest put forth first by Ferri, and then supported by Kartvelli with more detailed studies, was the idea that scramjet-powered aircraft would have no natural limits to speed or performance. They could fly to orbit, reaching speeds of Mach 25.
In the Air Force, concepts such as LACE and scramjets drew support from Weldon Worth, technical director at the Aero Propulsion Lab of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Beginning in about 1960, Worth built up a program of basic research called Aerospaceplane. Not aiming at actually building an airplane that would fly to orbit, the program pursued design studies and propulsion research that might lead to such aircraft in the distant future. The propulsion efforts were often very basic. When, in November 1964, Ferri succeeded in getting a scramjet to deliver thrust, it was impressive enough to merit an Air Force news release. Ferri went on to set a goal of 644 pounds of thrust for his test engine; he managed 517 pounds, 80 percent of his goal.
Aerospaceplane was too hot to keep under wraps. As a steady stream of leaks brought continuing coverage in the trade magazine Aviation Week. At the Los Angeles Times, the aerospace editor Marvin Miles developed his own connections, which led to banner headlines: "Lockheed Working on Plane Able to Go Into Orbit Alone"; "Huge Booster Not Needed by Air Force Space Plane." The Air Force's Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) was not amused. As early as December 1960, it warned that "too much emphasis may be placed on the more glamorous aspects of the Aerospaceplane resulting in neglect of what appear to be more conventional problems."

Several weeks ago I was having a series of random thoughts and now I am wondering today why I was thinking about those details. I was imagining that Mike Mullen had ordered this area destroyed with nuclear bombs and 3 bombs were going to be dropped from ballistic missiles over the downtown Seattle area, the Bellevue city and then someplace a few miles south of here in perhaps the Kent area.

As I imagined those series of events, I imagined that he had created a series of numbers that would be written onto the actual bombs and he would be the only person that would know the full combination of numbers for those three bombs.
Somehow in those random thoughts, I was supposed to read those numbers off the bombs before detonation and then write them down somewhere. One possible approach was simply that I wrote it in a letter and mailed it to the Pentagon.

I must have dreamed of deep-sea diving last night. There is an image lingering in my mind that I can partially visualize of seeing a lot of sea animals around me and I am left with the sense that I was deep underwater. I cannot visual complete details about any of those animals and I am left with the sense they were furtive sightings in my dive light which had a narrow field of illumination. I am also left with the sense that there was a very dense group of those animals around me and all I could see was a multitude of various sea animals within the field of illumination as I tried to travel through it all.

One detail I ponder every time is that none of these animals seemed to be the same and there were dozens of them around each other. I could not see the complete animal but I am left with the sense that from what I could see it was obvious they were all different species of some kind of fish.

There must be some reason to these thoughts [ , I think now having just awoken from sleep, ] I was having awhile back
The scene changes to some military office. A company officer, I think that would be considered a Major, wants to see an Admiral. The Major appears to have just come from a battle or something, he has mud on him and his uniform isn't really presentable. He is arriving after enduring 12 hours of being trapped in an overcrowded, dark bunker with a blistering, fierce mortar barrage from the enemy outside trying to break the bunker and then he is on a transport, some kind of windowless conveyance that is also overcrowded and hot and filled with the maddening and endless quietly blaring Muzac while the civilians around him are blathering on with moronic idiotic conversations that he can't help but overhear no matter how much he wants to tune them out and there is a communication panel where he wants to send a message to his family because he can't remember the last time he talked to any of them but some moron is doing something moronic on it. He eventually
barges into the Admiral's office and the scene is reminiscent in certain artistic elements to an ancient Admiralty environment, that type of environment that reminds me of HMS Pinafore, although I don't think I haven't actually seen that play. The Admiral and someone else are sitting around in some kind of stuffy, formal meeting, maybe even sipping tea with their pinky fingers extended, that seems to be a waste of time to the Major. He is frustrated because he lost several men in some kind of battle earlier. The Admiral doesn't want to be lectured because, as he points out to a machine across the room that is stamping his signature on death notices for next-of-kin, he is well aware of the loss.
There are only 12 units so they are sent where they are most needed.

HONOLULU - The Navy says a fire aboard the USS George Washington aircraft carrier has left one sailor with minor burns and 23 others with heat stress. The Navy said Friday that sailors extinguished the fire several hours after flames were spotted Thursday in the rear of the nuclear-powered ship. It says the carrier's propulsion plant was not damaged and the fire did not threaten the safety of the ship's nuclear reactor.

I recognized that man! “Mark, son I think I just saw Tom Benton.” Mark asked who he was. I continued starting toward the saloon. “Well, he was my captain in the army. I told you about him.” I told Mark to get his books from Hattie while I went over to say hi.
Nosey Mr. Hannabury was sitting there at the time and asked Mark who I said that was. “Tom Benton, a friend of my Pa’s,” Mark answered. Then he yelled in his ear, “They did special work behind enemy lines during the war!”
Benton asked the bartender for a glass then poured whisky from his own saddle bag into it. He started to take a drink when I called from behind him, “Alright, Benton turn around!”
He turned around alright! But he pointed his gun straight at me. That startled me a bit, but he immediately put the gun away when he realized it was me. “That’s not much of a welcome, Tom!” I declared. We greeted each other warmly, then Benton grabbed his stuff and made his way over to a table, ordering the bartender to give him another glass.
“Coffee!” I said. “Better make it two, Sweeny.” Sweeny wanted to know who that was. Boy was he surprised to learn that this drunk was my army captain!
As I sat down, I hinted that he had enough to drink, but he told me not to reform him. I asked him why he was here. “Just passing through. Soldier of fortune, that’s me!” Then he asked me if I remember Mary Lee Gene. I couldn’t believe he was still seeing her!
“Hey, hey do you remember that Turkey Shoot we entered in Denver?” he asked then. He suddenly turned and looked at the bar. “Lucas, don’t move!” he said as he stood up. I had beat him in that turnkey shoot, but he wanted to bet me that he could shoot off the tops of every bottle in the bar.
Boy, this guy was really drunk! I started to stand up to stop him from doing something foolish, but he took out his gun and pushed me back down. With a smile on his face, he turned and fired. He fired six shots, and all six shots knocked the tops off of the bottles.
I suddenly stood up and grabbed his gun from him. "What's the matter with you?" I asked.
He laughed. "You've changed Luke, lost your sense of humor."
I was angry with the way my great Captain was acting! “I’m not the one who’s changed, Tom!” I declared.
Suddenly, Sweeny was mad and demanded Tom to pay for the damage. I quickly told Sweeny we’d settle up with him later. I wanted to get my friend out of there before Micah showed up and threatened to throw him in jail.
But I wasn’t fast enough! Micah barged in with his shotgun in hand. "What's going on here Sweeney?"
"I guess he had one too many," said Sweeney.
Micah told Benton he was under arrest. I told Micah he was a friend of mine and that I could vouch for him. "Friend of yours?” Micah sounded surprised. “Suppose we talk about it in my office.” From the tone of his voice, I knew that was an order, and I better follow it!
As we headed for his office, I assured Micah that there was no need for this. "Lucas, when a man's as drunk as your friend he should cool his heels in jail for the sake of everyone."
"Micah, he's not that drunk," I argued. But then Benton staggered out into the street and into a cowboy riding a horse. He swung back and Micah and I caught him by the arm.

MOJAVE, Calif. - The sleek, bullet-shaped spacecraft is about the size of a large business jet - with wide windows and seats for six well-heeled passengers to take a ride into space.
It's billed as the world's first commercial spaceship, designed to be carried aloft by an exotic jet before firing its rocket engine to climb beyond the Earth's atmosphere.
On Monday, Virgin Galactic took the cloak off SpaceShipTwo, which had been under secret development for two years. The company plans to sell suborbital space rides for $200,000 a ticket, offering passengers 2½-hour flights that include about five minutes of weightlessness.
"We want this program to be a whole new beginning in a commercial era of space travel," said Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson, who partnered with famed aviation designer Burt Rutan on the venture.

Hope faded Thursday of finding 11 missing offshore workers alive as the sun set on a second day of searching and the massive drilling rig that exploded into flames late Tuesday night sank into the Gulf of Mexico.
With the fire doused and the rig submerged, the Coast Guard launched a sweeping effort to clean up petroleum spewed into the water and seal off a well at the sea floor that may have still been leaking oil.
As it did, investigations began and questions continued to swirl about the cause of the accident at the Deepwater Horizon, a half-billion-dollar rig owned and operated by Swiss-based Transocean that was under lease to BP.
