The voltage of each individual cell in battery must range between 1.5 and 1.7 volts. Kitty Hawk is two months into its summer deployment from Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan. Motive (law)
In law, especially criminal law, a motive is the cause that moves people to induce a certain action. Motive in itself is seldom an element of any given crime; however, the legal system typically allows motive to be proven in order to make plausible the accused's reasons for committing a crime, at least when those motives may be obscure or hard to identify with.
The law technically distinguishes between motive and intent. "Intent" in criminal law is synonymous with mens rea, which means no more than the specific mental purpose to perform a deed that is forbidden by a criminal statute, or the reckless disregard of whether the law will be violated.[citation needed] "Motive" describes instead the reasons in the accused's background and station in life that are supposed to have induced the crime.
Motive is particularly important in prosecutions for homicide. First, murder is so drastic a crime that most people recoil from the thought of being able to do it; proof of motive explains why the accused did so desperate an act.

SHEPPARD (to Herick): What are you doing?
HERICK: Getting answers.
(He presses a button and a beam similar to a Wraith transporter beam shoots out of the device. It deposits an older man into the room. He is wearing a similar boiler suit to Herick, although his is blue. Instantly John and Ronon raise their pistol and blaster and aim them at him. Herick rushes across to the man and grabs him, shouting into his face in anguish.)
HERICK: They were to be here when I awoke! You gave me your word!
JAMUS: Herick!
(John pulls Herick off and shoves him back.)
SHEPPARD: Alright, take it easy. Let the man have a breath.
(Jamus sits down, catching his breath and looking confused.)
JAMUS: I don’t understand.
HERICK: Where is the second storage device? (He points accusingly at the empty cradle.)
JAMUS: They waited too long to launch the second shuttle. Herick, I’m sorry.
HERICK: I worked every day of my life to complete this place with the promise that when it was done, my wife and son would be among the ones saved. You made me that promise when you stored my pattern in the device.
JAMUS: Shortly after you were stored in the device, word came from the planet that the last group had not yet made it to the second shuttle. With the launch of the first just hours before, the secret was out. There were riots on the street. Much of our leadership was in that last group.
HERICK: You delayed the launch. How long did you wait?
JAMUS: A day, but in that day the Wraith came, Herick, through the Portal.

JAMUS: A day, but in that day the Wraith came, Herick, through the Portal. We knew it was the beginning -- we knew it was an advance scout. It had happened far too many times in our history. We knew.
HERICK: Why didn’t you order them to launch?
JAMUS: Because the second shuttle would have led the Wraith straight here.
(Herick gazes at him, grief-stricken.)
JAMUS: It was the only way. You must understand that.
DEX: Sounds to me like you did it to save yourself.
JAMUS: No ... (he gestures to the storage device) ... to preserve the others who were already in storage.
(John, who had casually put his foot up on the edge of the device, now gingerly removes his foot.)
JAMUS: If the Wraith had followed the second shuttle, if they’d discovered what we had done, they would have blasted this moon from the sky. (He stands up and walks closer to Herick.) It was the hardest decision I have ever made, but if I had not made it, your life’s work would have meant nothing.
(Rodney comes in.)
McKAY: Another life sign just appeared on the shuttle’s H.U.D. (He notices Jamus.) Oh. Hi. (He walks towards him, holding out his hand.) McKay. Doctor Rodney McKay. I was the one who powered up your station.
(Jamus stares at his outstretched hand, obviously not knowing what he’s meant to do about it. Instead, he nods briefly to Rodney.)
McKAY (awkwardly): ... And you’re welcome. (He lowers his hand.)
JAMUS: My people are grateful for your assistance.
HERICK: We don’t need them.
SHEPPARD: We do have a ship.
McKAY: One that -- no offence -- is better than that shuttle you’ve got there. We can get you back down to the planet and restoring your civilisation in no time. (He smiles smugly).

SHEPPARD (from the corridor): What’s happening?
(Rodney recoils back from the window, grabbing for his helmet but it’s too late for him to put it on before the debris crashes into the window ... and bounces off, leaving just a small scratch on the outside of the glass. Rodney’s eyes widen as the debris floats away, then he smiles in delight.)
McKAY: I’m alive!
(Suddenly the small scratch starts to fracture and lines run out from it.)
McKAY: I’m dead! I’m so dead!
(He stumbles away from the window, quickly pulling his helmet on.)
SHEPPARD: Rodney? What’s happening?
McKAY (still struggling to get his helmet on): The Control Room window’s just been hit by a piece of debris from the explosion. It’s about to breach!
SHEPPARD: McKay?
McKAY: Can’t talk now!
(Having got his helmet in place, he grabs onto the hatch with both hands as the glass in the window behind him shatters and the air is sucked out of the room. Once all the air has gone and everything has gone quiet again, he turns the wheel on the hatch, opens it, goes through and closes the hatch again.)
McKAY: We just lost the Control Room.
SHEPPARD: Didn’t seem like it controlled much anyway.
McKAY: True. Alright. I’m gonna take a look around -- see if I can figure out a way to seal the compartments between us. I figure it would be nice if we were all together as we burn up.
SHEPPARD (reprovingly): McKay.
McKAY: I’m sorry. I mean, as we get rescued. I always get those two confused. (He looks around as he works out which way to go.) Alright.
(He heads off.)
LATER. Rodney is working his way through the base, checking hatches as he goes. He reaches one that has a storage container wedged in it, obviously sucked there during the explosion. He removes the case and tries to push the hatch closed. Just then the base shakes violently. Rodney stares upwards for a moment as the base settles, then tries to push the hatch closed again but can’t manage it. He reports over the radio.
McKAY: If anyone’s counting, we have another problem. I can’t seal the compartments between us because one of the hatches won’t shut.
SHEPPARD: What’s wrong with it?
McKAY: Looks like the entire bulkhead was twisted when Sammy Suicide decided to fire up his rocket ship.

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.
The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.
Role in the Nazi state
When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.
World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.
Organization
The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels
Propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.
Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."
Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government. However, you cannot lie! We must never lie!

(John looks down at the detector which is strapped to the sleeve of his spacesuit. It beeps.)
SHEPPARD: We’ve got company.
SHORTLY AFTERWARDS. John pushes open a pressure hatch and walks cautiously into the compartment, aiming his rifle. Rodney follows him. The room has more consoles around the walls, and there are two large metal cradles in the room. One of them is empty but the other has a large device on it. It’s about six feet long and shoulder height and is lit with glowing green panels. Lying unconscious on the floor on the other side of the device is a man in his mid thirties, dressed only in a sort of boiler suit which is brown in colour.
SHEPPARD: Alright. Who the hell is this guy?
ATLANTIS. The Stargate is open. John is reporting over the radio from the moonbase to Doctor Elizabeth Weir.
WEIR: You reported that there were no life signs. How did he get there?
SHEPPARD: We don’t know yet.
(John and Rodney have brought the man back to the Puddle Jumper and have laid him on one of the benches in the rear of the ship. Teyla and Ronon are checking the man over. John has removed his spacesuit. Rodney is still in his, although he has taken the helmet off.)
SHEPPARD: Some kind of a energy spike right when his life signs popped up.
McKAY: I recognised the energy signature as very similar -- virtually identical -- to Wraith beaming technology. I think he was automatically reintegrated when life support systems started up.
WEIR: Beaming technology?! A minute ago you said the station was antiquated.
SHEPPARD: Other than the one upgrade.

BAGHDAD, IRAQ — In Iraq they call it neefak, which loosely translated means ``having two faces`` or hypocrisy.
It is how Iraqi parents teach their children to behave from an early age, according to one Iraqi man who is unusually outspoken against his government. Children overhear their parents criticizing their government, but they are ordered to express nothing but devotion to Saddam Hussein at school and among friends for fear of getting their parents into trouble.
``All Iraqis are brought up to have two faces,`` said the man, the father of three. ``So, when you hear an Iraqi tell you he loves Saddam Hussein, remember that his parents taught him to have two faces.``
It is not unusual to find malcontents even under the most popular of governments. The difficulty in a society such as Iraq`s lies in determining whether the whispered expressions of dissatisfaction represent just the grumblings of a few or are clues to a far more pervasive discontent-an unseen, second face of Iraq that has been trained by 20 years of ruthless one-party rule.
On the surface, Iraqi society is one massive personality cult focused around Hussein, whose face peers from billboards around the capital. On TV every evening there is a sort of love-in, in which poets, singers, soldiers and children offer various forms of entertainment dedicated to Hussein. There is even a large electronic message sign in downtown Baghdad that offers a running commentary on the people`s love for Hussein.
But scratch the surface of the flashy displays of devotion and one starts to uncover layers of discontent, the depths of which can only be estimated.
One thing is sure: The looming prospect of war with the United States has frightened people, and that appears to have made them bolder than usual in their criticism of the government.
``For the first time, Saddam Hussein has given people something to be more scared of than himself,`` said a Western diplomat.
By Western standards, the criticism is far from outspoken. It may take the form of a telling gesture, such as an Iraqi taxi driver who, upon passing an oversized, illuminated statue of Hussein in the city center, laughs derisively and smacks his steering wheel in frustration and disgust. But asked to explain his outburst, he only shrugs.
Others are bolder, but speak only on condition that they not be identified. Even being seen with a foreigner can be dangerous. That is why many Iraqis appear, at first sight, to be rude to foreigners, explained another Iraqi who spoke at length about what he described as the widespread unpopularity of the government.
``Mohammed has made us this way,`` the man said. He refused to refer to Hussein for fear he would be overheard. ``He has made it so that every father is afraid of his son, every brother is afraid of his sister, every child afraid of their parents.``
The man said no one in Iraq wants to go to war over Kuwait. But he acknowledged that if the U.S. attacks Iraq, patriotic sentiment will overcome any feelings against war.

MANAMA, Bahrain - The U.S. Navy today destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms, sank a defending Iranian patrol boat and bombed two Iranian frigates. Iran attacked oil facilities off Sharjah and fired on at least two U.S. vessels.
One U.S. warship fired missiles at two approaching Iranian jet fighters, but the fighters reversed course; it was unclear whether they were hit, Carlucci said.
He said an Iranian patrol boat fired on the U.S. cruiser Wainwright, which took part in the attack on one of the platforms. The Wainwright was not hit.

The air war against Iraq started a day after the deadline set by the United Nations Security Council for the withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait (at midnight January 15, 1991). H-Hour for the main attack, or Phase 1, was set for 3:00 AM, January 17 (local time); however, the first air operations were initiated, surprisingly not by the US Air Force, but by the US Army. Nine AH-64A Apache helicopters (with one acting as a reserve) were guided to their targets by three air force MH-53J Pave Low helicopters known collectively as Task Force Normandy. The targets in question were two Iraqi early-warning radar sites based in western Iraq that would have provided highly dangerous advance warnings about coalition air raids into Iraq. Just before H-hour, January 17, the Apache helicopters fired Hellfire missiles, Hydra rockets and thousands of 30 mm cannon shells devastating their targets with precise firepower. Unfortunately, although a corridor was opened up in the Iraqi air-defense network for the strike planes over Western Iraq, the attack itself was quickly reported back to Baghdad, in effect, providing the advance warning that the strike had been intended to prevent. After completing its mission and receiving the unwelcome attention of Iraqi shoulder-fired missiles (SA-7) and ground fire, Task Force Normandy returned safely to base.

Suddenly, the lights began to go off. One of the pilots mused, "I think they know we are here." Thirty seconds prior, the Apache crews turned on their ranging lasers. At exactly 2:37:50 AM, White Team Apache pilot 2d Lt. Tom Drew keyed his radio and broadcast, "Party in ten." Precisely ten seconds later all crews began firing their Hellfire missiles. Twenty seconds later, the deadly weapons began to detonate against the structures. The generators were hit first, then the command bunkers, and finally, the radar dishes themselves. Several Iraqi enemy soldiers died in the barrage.
Once all the Hellfires had been expended, the helicopters flew toward the sites and ripple-fired their rockets. Two thousand meters from the sites, they opened up with their 30 mm chain guns and riddled what remained of the compounds with every bullet they had. Four minutes after it started, it was over. The Apaches had expended twenty-seven Hellfire missiles, 100 Hydra-70 rockets, and 4,000 rounds of 30 mm cannon fire. They turned south, rejoined with the Pave Lows, and headed home. En route, Captain Martin's crew observed what appeared to be the launch of two SA-7 missiles. They utilized their on-board defensive systems and some aggressive maneuvering to escape the missiles.
Outbound, Comer radioed a code word message to SOCCENT headquarters reporting their complete success. "SOF targets destroyed." Colonel Johnson personally reported the results to General Schwarzkopf's command center. "Thank God," he responded. (10)
The combination of the Pave Lows and Apaches had worked as hoped. All of the planning, calculating, and training had paid off. As Capt. Martin was leading his formation back to the south, he could see in the clear night air above the massive formations of allied aircraft heading for the radar gap. He remembered:
You could look off to the south and there were blinkers lined up. You could see a long way on goggles. And it's also desert, so it's clear. There were anti-collision lights lined up; it looked like an LA freeway.... And they were all chasing these big blinkers ... [the]tankers. Then all of a sudden, there was a point where there were no more lights. So they would get gas, drop off, turn lights off, and head north. (11)
One F-15E fighter pilot who was in that massive gaggle of firepower wrote a thank you letter to the men of Task Force Normandy which said, "During our [flight intelligence] brief, we noticed our route of flight took us right over an active [radar] site.... We were told not to worry about it! We saw the explosions and your helicopters in our FLIR as we flew over you. There was immense relief!"

Billy Cutshaw (Scott Wilson), a former astronaut who fell into madness, lives in a large castle in a forest region of the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile, Colonel Vincent Kane (Stacy Keech Jr.), a former member of the United States Marine Corps who has recurring nightmares, is being driven to the castle. On the way there, they pass a pickup truck, going in the other direction, that is overloaded with members of a biker gang; in the pickup there is an old man tied to a chair.
Upon arrival, the castle's military staff struggles to maintain discipline in the rowdy and irreverent patients. Kane begins speaking to a doctor, but discovers that the doctor is actually another patient in disguise. Colonel Fell (Ed Flanders) exposes the impostor and reveals himself as the real doctor. Kane allows several patients into his office to talk about respective delusions, and insists that he is always available to listen to the patients. Cutshaw accepts an offer to give Kane his saint's medallion. Kane later notes about the curative properties of "shock therapy" and inspects Cutshaw's medallion and grips the chain.
Fell wakes Kane from another nightmare and questions him about his dreams. Kane says that they are another man's nightmares, explaining that another man described the dreams to him and now he gets them as well. Fell asks who the man was, and Kane responds that it was his brother, who is a "murderer". Kane asks if Fell has heard of Vincent "Killer" Kane, a guerrilla soldier personally responsible for killing dozens of enemies. Kane says "Killer" Kane was his brother, but is now dead. Fell leaves, but as he closes Kane's door his jovial demeanor breaks suddenly into sobs.
Later, Cutshaw talks with another patient about Kane. Cutshaw suspects that Kane is crazy himself. He asserts that psychiatrists often go crazy and have the highest suicide rate of any profession. Cutshaw goes to talk with Kane again, angrily denying the existence of a purpose or divine plan. Kane, who believes that the existence of a God is far more likely than humanity having emerged from "random chance", tries to argue that deeds of pure self-sacrifice are proof of human goodness, which can only be explained by divine purpose. Cutshaw demands that Kane recall one concrete example of pure self-sacrifice from his personal experience, but Kane cannot.
Cutshaw convinces Kane to take him to a church service. Cutshaw interrupts the service with several outbursts. Looking at an altar boy, Kane momentarily sees a Vietnamese boy, but he dispels the illusion with difficulty. Back at the castle, Cutshaw thanks Kane and asks him to send him a sign as proof of an afterlife should Kane die first. Kane promises to try.
Another patient named Lt. Reno (Jason Miller), who is staging a production of Hamlet using dogs as actors, gives a long speech to Kane asserting that Hamlet had to pretend to be crazy in order to stay sane. As he leaves, he meets with Cutshaw, who asks if "they bought it". The director responds, "Hell, I bought it".
A new patient is scheduled to arrive at the castle and Kane goes to meet him. Kane instantly recognizes the soldier, triggering a flashback. In the jungles of Vietnam, the soldier stumbles upon Kane, who is kneeling on the ground and muttering that he cut a boy's head off with a wire, but the boy "kept on talking". Insisting that they need to leave, the soldier advances on Kane, whom he sees is holding a severed head in his hands. Kane screams and the flashback ends. In the castle, Kane collapses unconscious.
Fell explains to the staff that Kane really is Vincent "Killer" Kane, and had suffered a breakdown in Vietnam. When Fell, who is actually Kane's brother Hudson, was dispatched back to America, Kane received the dispatch by accident. Kane came to believe that he was really his psychiatrist brother in order to escape from his guilt. He returned to America, subconsciously hoping to heal people to make up for his "murders". Realizing Kane's mental state, the Army psychiatric staff maintained the charade and sent him to Fell's hospital under the pretext of being its commanding officer. In reality, Fell has been the commanding officer all along. Kane awakens and remembers nothing of the incident.

(He walks over to the window to look down at the shuttle. Herick has reached the shuttle and has opened the rear hatch. He looks out for a moment, then turns and runs back into the shuttle.)
McKAY (over comms): Herick, what are you doing?
(Herick runs up a ladder into the control module of the shuttle. He sits down into the pilot’s seat and starts activating controls. Rodney stares in horror.)
McKAY (into radio): Sheppard, you need to get Herick out of that shuttle now!
SHEPPARD: We’re on our way.
(As he and Ronon race through the corridors, Herick continues activating controls.)

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.
The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.
Role in the Nazi state
When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.
World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.
Organization
The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels
Propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.
Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."

Rove's testimony in the yearlong investigation comes as the hotly contested presidential race between Bush and Democrat John Kerry enters its final weeks. Democrats wasted no time in turning Rove's appearance into criticism of the president.
Kerry senior adviser Joe Lockhart issued a statement calling on Rove and other aides to "come clean about their role in this insidious act."
"If the president sincerely wanted to get to the bottom of this potential crime, he'd stop the White House foot-dragging and fully cooperate with this investigation," Lockhart said.

The Coeur d'Alene are a Native American people who lived in villages along the Coeur d'Alene, St. Joe, Clark Fork and Spokane Rivers; as well as sites on the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Lake Pend Oreille and Hayden Lake, in what is now northern Idaho, eastern Washington and western Montana.
In their language, members call themselves Schitsu'umsh (or Skitswish), meaning The Discovered People or Those Who Are Found Here. French Canadian fur traders in the late 18th or early 19th century gave them their non-native name. The name Cœur d'Alène means Heart of an Awl, referring to the perceived shrewdness of the trading skills exhibited by the tribe.

the revolving doors that kept the air inside-every door,, ay he'd seen was like some sort of air lock, and made him think of a spacecraft. Not a single dollar had been spared make this facility perfect. But perfect for what?
Popov shook his head and sipped at his tea. The quality of the food was excellent. The quality of everything was excellent, except the absurdly pedestrian artwork. There was, therefore, not a single mistake here. Brightling was not the sort of man to compromise on anything, was he? Therefore, Dmitriy Arkadeyevich told himself, everything acre was deliberate, and everything fit into a pattern, from which he could discern the purpose of the building and the man who'd erected it. He'd allowed himself to be beguiled this day with his tour-and his physical examination? What the hell was that all about? The doctor had given him an injection. A "booster" he'd called it. But what for? Against what? Outside this shrine to technology was a mere farm, and outside that, wild animals, which his driver of the day had seemed to worship.
Druids, he thought. In his time as a field officer in England he'd taken the time to read books and learn about the culture of the English, played the tourist, even traveled to Stonehenge and other places, in the hope of understanding the people better. Ultimately, though, he found that history was history, and though highly interesting, no more logical there than in the Soviet Union-where history had mainly been lies concocted to fit the ideological pattern of Marxism-Leninism.
Druids had been pagans, their culture based on the gods supposed to live in trees and rocks, and to which human lives had been sacrificed. That had doubtless been a measure exercised by the druid priesthood to maintain their control over the peasants… and the nobility, too, in fact, as all religions tended to do. In return for offering some hope and certainty for the greatest mysteries of life - what happened after death, why the rain fell when it did, how the world had come to be-they extracted their price of earthly power, which was to tell everyone how to live. It had probably been a way for people of intellectual gifts but ignoble birth to achieve the power associated with the nobility. But it had always been about power - earthly power. And like the members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, the druid priesthood had probably believed that which they said and that which they enforced because-they had to believe it. It had been the source of their power, and you had to believe in that.
But these people here weren't primitives, were they? They were mainly scientists, some of them world leaders in their fields. Horizon Corporation was a collection of geniuses, wasn't it? How else had Brightling accumulated so much money?

The UW Board of Regents, at its Oct. 19 meeting, approved the consolidation of the Department of Genetics in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Molecular Biotechnology in the School of Medicine. The merger creates the new Department of Genome Sciences in the School of Medicine.
Professor Stan Fields, noted for developing the two-hybrid system to analyze protein interactions, is the acting chair of the new department. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in the largest donation ever to a Northwest university, today is announcing a $70 million gift to strengthen the University of Washington's already renowned center for human-genome research.
The money will be used to help build a state-of-the-art research building to foster scientific collaboration and lure more star scientists to his hometown, Bill Gates said in an interview.
"This will cement the leadership role the university is in, and holds great promise for pushing forward the contribution that genomics work will make to all kinds of diseases," said Gates, co-founder of Microsoft. "It also shows a commitment on my part, the foundation's part, to keep Seattle pre-eminent in these areas."
Gates said the bulk of his gift, $60 million, will go toward a new building on campus for the Department of Genome Sciences and Department of Bioengineering.

It was just too much for Wil Gearing. Nobody had told him what to do in a case like this. It had never occurred to him that security would be broken on the Project. His life was forfeit now-how could that have happened'.' He could cooperate or not. The contents of the canister would be examined anyway, probably at USAMRIID at Fort Detrick, Maryland, and it would require only a few seconds for the medical experts there to see what he'd carried into the Olympic stadium, and there was no explaining that away, was there? His life, his plans for the future, had been taken away from him. and his only choice was to cooperate and hope for the best.
And so, as the C-17A Globemaster III transport climbed to its cruising altitude, he started talking. Noonan held a tape recorder in his hand, and hoped that the engine noise that permeated the cargo area wouldn't wash it all away. It turned out that the hardest part for him was to keep a straight face. He'd heard about extreme environmental groups, the people who thought killing baby seals in Canada was right up there with Treblinka and Auschwitz, and he knew that the Bureau had looked at some for offenses like releasing laboratory animals from medical institutions, or spiking trees with nails so that no lumber company would dare to run trees from those areas through their sawmills, but he'd never heard of those groups doing anything more offensive than that. This, however, was such a crime as to redefine "monstrous." And the religious fervor that went along with it was entirely alien to him, and therefore hard to credit. He wanted to believe that the contents of the chlorine canister really was just chlorine, but he knew that it was not. That and the backpack were now sealed in a mil-spec plastic container strapped down in a seat next to Sergeant Mike Pierce.
"He hasn't called yet," John Brightling observed, checking his watch. The closing ceremonies were under way. The head of the International Olympic Committee was about to give his speech, summoning the Youth of the World to the next set of games. Then the assembled orchestra would play, and the Olympic Flame would be extinguished… just as most of humanity would be extinguished. There was the same sort of sadness to it, but also the same inevitability. There would be no next Olympiad, and the Youth of the World would not be alive to hear the summons?…
"John, he's probably watching this the same as we are. Give him some time," Bill Henriksen advised.
"You say so." Brightling put his arm around his wife's shoulders and tried to relax. Even now, the people walking in the stadium were being sprinkled with the nanocapsules bearing Shiva. Bill was right. Nothing could have gone wrong. He could see it in his mind. The streets and highways empty, farms idle, airports shut down. The trees would thrive without lumberjacks to chop them down. The animals would nose about, wondering perhaps where all the noises and the two-legged creatures were. Rats and of her carrion eaters would feast. Dogs and cats would return to their primal instincts and survive or not, as circumstances allowed. Herbivores and predators would be relieved of hunting pressure. Poison traps set out in the wild would continue to kill, but eventually these would run out of their poisons and stop killing game that farmers and others disliked. This year there would be no mass murder of baby harp seals for their lovely white coats. This year the world would be reborn… and even if that required an act of violence, it was worth the price for those who had the brains and aesthetic to appreciate it all. It was like a religion for Brightling and his people. Surely it had all the aspects of a religion. They worshiped the great collective life system called Nature. They were fighting for Her because they knew that She loved and nurtured them back. It was that simple. Nature was to them if not a person, then a huge enveloping idea that made and supported the things they loved. They were hardly the first people to dedicate their lives to an idea, were they?

JAMUS: We killed Wraith. Every ship that landed was struck by our atomic weapons. We knew that the radioactive cloud would spread over every continent. We knew the planet would be uninhabitable for many years.
TEYLA: So you built this place.
JAMUS: That we could rebuild without fear of the Wraith ever returning. So, you see, these souls must survive. If they do not, the many hundreds of thousands lost in the war will have died for nothing.
(Teyla, whose face has been stern and angry up until now, looks a little more sympathetic as she steps towards him.)
JAMUS: Don’t. Don’t. (Teyla stops.) Your life is all I have to bargain with. I do not wish to take it.
(The base shakes again. From a viewpoint in space, the leading edge of the moon touches the outer edge of the atmosphere and begins to glow. Outside the Pattern Storage Room, Carson struggles to keep his footing.)
BECKETT: This is taking too bloody long.
SHEPPARD: I’m goin’ as fast as I can.
(Inside)
TEYLA: Any moment now, Colonel Sheppard will cut through that door. If you shoot me, they will surely kill you.
(Keeping the pistol trained on her, Jamus backs up to the storage device and starts pressing buttons.)
TEYLA: Perhaps the only way to preserve your people now is to preserve their memory. If you die, they will be forgotten. Their deaths will go unrecorded, and the Wraith will have won.
(Jamus glances at the hatch, where John is still cutting.)
TEYLA: Or leave here with us now and keep the spirit of your people alive inside you. Document their achievements, their struggles and triumphs. Tell their story to anyone who will listen. The choice is yours.
(The base shakes even more violently. Jamus keeps his footing and begins to press buttons on the storage device again.)
JAMUS: I never intended to take your life. My only hope is that Colonel Sheppard is sincere in his statement that he will leave no-one behind.
(Outside, John has almost finished cutting. A few moments later, Jamus runs to the hatch and shouts through it.)
JAMUS: Colonel! Colonel. You can stop what you’re doing now. I’m ready to open the door.
(He presses some buttons beside the hatch. John stops cutting.)
SHEPPARD (in irritation): Now he’s ready!
