Plot Summary


Andrew Morton is an attorney who made it out of the slums. Nick Romano is his client, a young man with a long string of crimes behind him. After he lost his paycheck gambling, hoping to buy his wife some jewelry, she announced she was pregnant, Later he finds her dead from suicide. When he turns again to robbery he's caught by a cop and Nick pumps all his bullets into him in frustration. Morton's appeal to the court emphasizes the evils of the slums.

Plot Summary


Returning to England from a bombing run in May 1945, flyer Peter Carter's plane is damaged and his parachute ripped to shreds. He has his crew bail out safely, but figures it is curtains for himself. He gets on the radio, and talks to June, a young American woman working for the USAAF, and they are quite moved by each other's voices. Then he jumps, preferring this to burning up with his plane. He wakes up in the surf. It was his time to die, but there was a mixup in heaven. They couldn't find him in all that fog. By the time his "Conductor" catches up with him 20 hours later, Peter and June have met and fallen in love. This changes everything, and since it happened through no fault of his own, Peter figures that heaven owes him a second chance. Heaven agrees to a trial to decide his fate.

There were two other reasons why national laboratories headed the exploration into nuclear research. The first was secrecy. Although much of the research generated at governmental facilities is eventually declassified for transfer to industry, as it is being produced it often remains classified. This restricted environment, which is best suited for a government laboratory, is essential when the research is directly tied to national security issues, and nuclear research was squarely in this category. American allies like Canada, Britain, and France also began a significant nuclear research effort, but the United States knew that the Soviet Union also coveted this technology. With scientific knowledge becoming a symbolic and practical weapon of the Cold War, any information resulting from nuclear research had to be protected. Although no facility was immune from spies, the U.S. government believed that its best chance for controlling the spread of nuclear secrets was at its own laboratories, and not at academic or industrial sites. Second, national laboratories also had the luxury of assembling a wide variety of specialists from different disciplines that could be brought together for a common goal. The prime example of this was the Manhattan Project. Such a vast, complex, yet single-minded goal would have been far beyond the capabilities of any single university laboratory. Furthermore, since nuclear specialists were all under the control of the AEC, their focus could be redirected at the discretion of the government.

The Soviet Union was quickly gaining a vast nuclear expertise with the help of its own research and test reactor program. The first went critical at the Russian Research Center at the Kurchatov Institute on December 25, 1946. The Soviets had founded this institute three years earlier to develop nuclear weapons, and it became the leading postwar Russian research and development organization in the field of nuclear energy.31 This reactor was in operation for over 57 years, and most of the work on the Soviet nuclear airplane took place there.

That time Tracie's father, Joseph, was helping cut down trees in my yard at Country Club Estates. I "remember" Tracie, Amanda, and Betty, were in the house and something about Amanda's observations from the sound and feel of the tall trees hitting the ground. There was one time I yelled to Joseph to watch out because the rope snapped on the winch I was using and it jumped away towards him. I had a winch connected to one tree and was pulling over the tree he was using the chainsaw on so we could get the tree to fall away from the house. I was standing there with the winch handle in my hand as I watched the winch jump away from me and it seemed to happening in slow motion. I later puzzled over, based on what Tracie told me, about how Joseph got angry because I had to go to the doctor for treatment for one of my eyes. He and I was standing next to one of the pine trees as we were cutting it down and when I looked up at one point, a piece of falling bark hit me on the eye leaving a minor cut on the eyeball. I puzzled over why that made him so angry, as he was always a calm fellow. I can still "remember" going to that doctor in Greer and various other details associated with those events. I "remember" the doctor told me something about how the dye or whatever it was that he was putting into my eye was the same chemical used in those dye packs that pilots have for when they go in the water. As it was when the doctor first mentioned it to me, I can't remember the name of that chemical. Some kind of word similar to flourescent. It produces that bright, green color in the water around the pilot that helps rescue helos find the pilot.

And why would I "remember" that Tracie, who was born in Birmingham, moved out of my house at Country Club Estates, back to her parents house, on MLK Day? Why would I have such a specific memory? There is also that detail I wrote about how the town Julia Roberts is from is in the mid-point of Birmingham and Greenville, SC. Julia Robert's mother was a teacher of MLK's kids, according to sources.

A few days ago I was thinking again about that day Tracie moved out of that house I owned in Greer South Carolina. I was trying again to remember the precise year that happened. I remember clearly that day. That was Martin Luther King Day. She had movers come to transport her furniture to her parents house where they lived near Central South Carolina. That must have been 1993. January 18 1993, according to the calendar I just looked at. That must have been the day. My notes are never really clear about that. But I can't see how it could have been later that 1993. My artificial memory records how we first went out on December 7,th 1991. I have been thinking the date we got married at the justice of the peace in that county she lived in was July 2, 1992. I am fairly certain the month and day was July 2nd. I think I have written that more than once over the past five or six years.

In her kind way of speaking, she told me I should get some help. She said she would too. That was the last time we have ever spoke in person. January 18 1993. I can still visualize looking out the windows of the front door of that house on that day.
