a rule of criminal statutes that any death which occurs during the commission of a felony is first degree murder, and all participants in that felony or attempted felony can be charged with and found guilty of murder. A typical example is a robbery involving more than one criminal, in which one of them shoots, beats to death or runs over a store clerk, killing the clerk. Even if the death were accidental, all of the participants can be found guilty of felony murder, including those who did no harm, had no gun, and/or did not intend to hurt anyone.

The rule of felony murder is a legal doctrine in some common law jurisdictions that broadens the crime of murder in two ways. First, when an offender kills accidentally or without specific intent to kill in the commission of a felony, the offender can be charged with murder. Second, it makes any participant in such a felony criminally liable for any deaths that occur during or in furtherance of that felony.

While there is debate about the original scope of the rule, modern interpretations typically require that the felony be an inherently dangerous one, or one committed in an obviously dangerous manner. For this reason, the felony murder rule is often justified by its supporters as a means of deterring dangerous felonies.

According to some commentators, the common law rule dates to the twelfth century and took its modern form in the eighteenth century. Critics of the rule argue that the rule is unjust because it requires no intent to kill. In favor of the rule, it can be argued that the rule affirms for principle of the sanctity of human life by imposing harsher penalties for crimes that destroy human life.

The longer we avoid capture, the better our chances. They will continue to guard the Gate, yes, but in time Atlantis will realise we are late and they will send a rescue team.

KELLER: But we're not due back ‘til tomorrow.

TEYLA: It is therefore critical that we elude capture until then. What do you need to help your injury?

KELLER: Well, I should probably wrap it but the bandages are in the medical kit.

TEYLA: The kit is on the way to the weapons cache. Hopefully it'll still be where we ...

(She stops as a slow single drumbeat begins to sound.)

KELLER: What is that?

TEYLA: They are summoning the others, gathering them. The hunt is beginning.

(She picks up her stick and lays it across her lap as the drumbeat continues.)

LATER. The girls have made their way back down the incline. Teyla pulls the foliage off the medical backpack and takes it over to Jennifer.

KELLER: Oh, thank God.

TEYLA: We must move quickly.

KELLER: I will.

(Teyla checks the area while Jennifer unzips the bag and takes out a bottle of pills. Teyla looks round as the bottle rattles.)

KELLER: Ibuprofen. Helps with the pain and swelling.

TEYLA: Yes. Doctor McKay uses them frequently, along with antihistamines, antacids, motion sickness pills ...

KELLER: You forgot the prescription I just wrote him for restless leg syndrome.

(She unlaces her boot and takes it off.)

KELLER: I've always been a wimp. Got a low threshold for pain.

(She eases her sock off and starts to wrap a bandage around her foot.)

TEYLA: People often underestimate the level of discomfort they are capable of enduring. When I was a child, several of us were sent into the woods for ten days, alone.

KELLER: Ten days alone?!

TEYLA: It was a rite of passage among my people. No food, no water, forced to survive on our own. None of us believed we could endure it but all of us did.

KELLER: I went to summer camp. There were other kids; we had cabins – with beds ... and electricity ... and food.

TEYLA: I see.

KELLER: I didn't even make it three days. Got homesick; called my parents to come and get me.

Teyla and Dr. Keller go to the Athosian's new planet, and what they see is that the Athosian are not there anymore. They've gone missing. It seems to be the work of a warrior tribe, the Bola Kai.

Dr. Jennifer Keller goes on her first off-world visit accompanying Teyla on a visit to her people on New Athos. Her apprehension over visiting a strange planet increases considerably when they arrive to find the village deserted. It has all of the appearance of an attack, perhaps by the Wraith, but there are certain anomalies. They eventually find one survivor who Teyla knows is not an Athosian. He eventually admits that he is a Genii spy, Nabel Golan, who had infiltrated the Athosians to gather intelligence. Jennifer insists on treating his wounds and Teyla reluctantly agrees though she doesn't trust him, with good reason as it turns out. Their immediate concern however is the Bola Kai, a warrior tribe that claims to have arrived after the destruction of the village.

(She hobbles closer and looks at it. It's a simple bridge with a single large strand to walk on, and two more large strands coming up in a V-shape either side for handholds.)

TEYLA: My people built it. It is quite safe.

KELLER: Oh, I'm – I'm sure it is. It's just ... well, my ankle ... and I've also got this inner ear thing – we call it vertigo – and ...

(She stares across the bridge in dread.)

KELLER: Oh, God, look at it!

(Teyla turns to Jennifer, looking at her sternly.)

TEYLA: There comes a point in adversity when fear disappears, leaving only the will to survive.

KELLER: I know. It's just, I don't think I'm even remotely close to that point.

(She smiles at Teyla nervously. Teyla looks back at her, her face impassive.)

TEYLA: Fine. Stay here then.

(She walks onto the bridge.)

KELLER: Oh, wh... well, wait! I mean, I ... I'm sure I could ... (she looks around) ... I could climb down and find a ... shallow spot in the river to cross. I mean, it might take me a little longer but ...

(She turns and looks at the bridge again. Her eyes widen as she sees that Teyla is already almost halfway across.)

KELLER: Teyla?! Teyla!

(Terrified, she realises she has no choice but to cross the bridge.)

KELLER: Oh God.

(Whimpering, she puts her foot onto the bridge.)

KELLER: Here we go.

(She blows out a breath and hesitantly starts to walk forward.)

KELLER (to herself): It's perfectly safe. Perfectly safe.

(As she progresses a few paces forward, the bridge begins to sway with each step she takes.)

KELLER: Wobbly. Too wobbly.

Plot Summary


Dr. Jerimiah Morley becomes convinced that the world is headed to an inevitable worldwide nuclear war. He organizes an expedition made up of a team of expert scientists and an atomic-powered rock-boring vehicle called a "cyclotram" to find a subterranean environment where holocaust survivors could live indefinitely. When funding falls through, independently rich adventurer Wright Thompson underwrites the project under the condition that he be allowed to go. As the group goes deeper beneath the Earth's crust, personalities clash, tempers flare, and the dangerous journey claims the lives of several expedition members. When they come upon an enormous underground expanse with its own ocean and phosphorescent light, it appears that their goal has been achieved.

Henriksen was former FBI. Perhaps that explained it. Like Popov, he wouldn't court failure in anything. Or did he really want this Rainbow group damaged to the point that it couldn't couldn't what? Interfere with some operation?

Again the brick wall, and again Popov struck his head against it. He'd started two terrorist operations, and the only purpose for them he could discern was to raise the international consciousness about terrorism. Henriksen had an international consulting company in that area, and Henriksen wanted the consciousness raised so that I could win contracts-but on the surface it seemed an expensive and inefficient way of doing it, Popov reflected. Certainly the money to be gained from the contract won would be less than the money Popov had already expended-or pocketed. And again he reminded himself that the money had come from John Brightling and his Horizon Corporation-perhaps from Brightling himself-not Henriksen's GlobalSecurity, Inc. So, the two companies were related in their objectives, but not their financial support.

Therefore, Popov thought, sipping his French Chablis, the operation is entirely Brightling's doing, with Henriksen as a support service, providing expertise and advice

–but, one objective was to get Henriksen the consulting contract for the Sydney Olympics, to start in only a few weeks. That had been very important to both Brightling and Henriksen. Therefore, Henriksen was doing something of great importance to Brightling, doubtless in support of the latter's goal, whatever the hell that was.

But what did Brightling and his company do? Horizon Corporation and all of its numerous international subsidiaries were in the business of medical research. The company manufactured medicines, and spent a huge amount of money every year to invent new ones. It was the world leader in the field of medical research. It had Nobel Prize winners working in its labs, and, his Internet research had determined, it was working in some very exciting areas of potential medical advancement. Popov shook his head again. What did genetic engineering and pharmaceutical manufacturing have to do with terrorism?

The light bulb that went off over the Irish Sea reminded him that only a relatively few months before, America had been attacked with biological warfare. It had killed about five thousand people, and incurred the lethal wrath of the United States and her president. The dossier he'd been given said that the chief of this Rainbow group, Clark, and his son-in-law, Chavez, had played a quiet but very dramatic role in concluding that bloody little war.

Bio-war, Popov thought. It had given the entire world a reason to shudder. In the event it had proven to be an ineffective weapon of statecraft - especially since America had reacted with her customary speed and furious effectiveness on the battlefields of Saudi Arabia. As a result, no nation-state today dared even to contemplate an attack on America. Its armed forces strode the world like a frontier sheriff in a Western movie, respected and, more to the point, feared for their lethal capabilities.

Popov finished his wine, and fingered the empty glass in his hand as he looked down at the approaching green coastline of England. Bio-war. It had made the whole world shiver in fear and disgust. Horizon Corporation was deeply into cutting-edge research in medical science. So, surely, Brightling's business could well be involved with biological-warfare research-but to what possible end? Besides, it was a mere corporation, not a nation state. It had no foreign policy. It had nothing to gain from warlike activities. Corporations didn't make war, except, perhaps, on other corporations. They might try to steal trade secrets, but actually shed blood? Of course not. Again, Popov told himself, he had merely found a blank hard wall to smash his head against.

UW consolidates departments to form Department of Genome Sciences


The UW Board of Regents, at its Oct. 19 meeting, approved the consolidation of the Department of Genetics in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Molecular Biotechnology in the School of Medicine. The merger creates the new Department of Genome Sciences in the School of Medicine.

Professor Stan Fields, noted for developing the two-hybrid system to analyze protein interactions, is the acting chair of the new department. He is working with Dr. Maynard Olson, acting chair of the former Department of Molecular Biotechnology, and Dr. Breck Byers, chair of the former Department of Genetics, both of whom played leadership roles in launching the new department.

Gates gives $70 million for genome work at UW [ RACKETEER INFLUENCED AND CORRUPT ORGANIZATIONS US Title 18 ]

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in the largest donation ever to a Northwest university, today is announcing a $70 million gift to strengthen the University of Washington's already renowned center for human-genome research.

The money will be used to help build a state-of-the-art research building to foster scientific collaboration and lure more star scientists to his hometown, Bill Gates said in an interview.

"This will cement the leadership role the university is in, and holds great promise for pushing forward the contribution that genomics work will make to all kinds of diseases," said Gates, co-founder of Microsoft. "It also shows a commitment on my part, the foundation's part, to keep Seattle pre-eminent in these areas."

Gates said the bulk of his gift, $60 million, will go toward a new building on campus for the Department of Genome Sciences and Department of Bioengineering.

Is everybody asleep over there? What kind of operation do you people run? Then she repeats all she's just said as Mike listens to her, excited beyond words that he has found someone alive. When she finishes repeating the message he grabs the phone and is about to speak when suddenly he hears the Operator's voice again.

There is a certain suggestion of tenseness that suddenly shows on Mike's face.

1st director vows new office will avert turf battles

WASHINGTON — Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge was sworn in as director of the new Office of Homeland Security on Monday, a position President Bush created to reassure Americans that the nation would be better prepared to deal with terrorist attacks.

Some lawmakers and outside experts immediately questioned whether Ridge would become a powerhouse with sweeping authority over several agencies--including the FBI, CIA and Federal Emergency Management Agency--or be left a frustrated victim of Washington's notorious turf wars.

Ridge, a former congressman and a Vietnam War veteran, met such questions head-on during his swearing-in ceremony in the East Room of the White House, warning the 46 agencies he will deal with that "the only turf we should be worried about is the turf we stand on."

Bush has tried to confer a mantle of authority on Ridge, saying the new director will act as the domestic counterpart of National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and would work with the new Homeland Security Council, chaired by Bush.

Ridge will be given a seat at the White House's senior staff meeting each morning. He also will sit in on the FBI's daily briefing of the president and on some National Security Council briefings, though he will not have a seat on the council.

Ridge's mission, Bush said, is "to design a comprehensive, coordinated national strategy to fight terror here at home.

"I know that many Americans at this time have fears," Bush said. "We've learned that America is not immune from attack. We've seen that evil is real. . . . Yet America is equal to this challenge."

The plan for the Olympics was essentially in the bag. The fogging system was in place, which was just plain perfect for the Project's purposes. He'd have one of his men check out the system, and thereby get himself in place for the delivery part on the last day. It was that simple. He had the consulting contract needed to make it all happen. But now this Rainbow bunch would be down there as well. How intrusive might they be? Damn, there was just no telling -on that one. Worst case, it was possible that something small could toss a wrench into the works. It so often happened that way. He knew that from his time in the FBI. A random police patrol, a man on foot or in a radio-car could wander by and cause a well-planned robbery to stop. Or in the investigation phase, the unexpectedly sharp memory of a random passerby, or a casual remark made by a subject to a friend, could come to the right investigator and blow a case wide open. Boom, that simple-it had happened a million times. And the breaks always went to the other side, didn't they?

And so, from his perspective, he knew he had to eliminate the chance for such random events. He'd been so close to it. The operational concept had been brilliant it had mainly been his from the beginning; John Brightling had merely funded it. Getting the terrorists to operate in Europe had raised the international consciousness about the threat, and that had allowed him and his company to get the contract to oversee the security for the Olympics. But then this damned Rainbow team had appeared, and handled three major incidents-and what asshole had instigated the third one? he demanded of himself-so well that now the Australians had asked them to come down for a look. And if they came down, they'd stay and keep looking, and if that happened, they might be there for the games, and if they wondered about chemical weapons. then they might spot the perfect delivery system for them and-

A lot of ifs, Henriksen told himself. A lot of ifs. A lot of things had to go wrong for the Project to be thwarted. There was comfort in that thought. Maybe he could meet with the Rainbow people and direct them away from the threat. After all, he had a chemical weapons expert on the payroll, and they probably did not, and that gave him the edge, didn't it? With a little cleverness, his man could do his job right in front of them and not even be seen to have done it. That's what planning was for, wasn't it?

Relax, he told himself, as the stewardess came around with drinks, and he had another glass of wine. Relax. But, no, he couldn't do that. He had too much experience as an investigator to accept the mere chance of random interference without consideration of the possible consequences. If his man were stopped, even by accident, then it was also possible that the entire Project could be uncovered. And that would mean more than failure. It would mean lifelong imprisonment at best, which was not something he was prepared to accept. No, he was committed to the Project for more than one reason. It was his task to save the world first of all-and second, he wanted to be around to enjoy what he'd had a hand in saving.

And so, risks of any type and any magnitude were unacceptable. He had to come up with a way to eliminate them. The key to that was the Russian, Popov. He wondered what that spook had discovered on his trip to England. With the right information, he could devise a plan to deal with that Rainbow bunch directly. Wouldn't that be interesting? He settled back into his seat and chose a movie to semi watch, to disguise what he was doing. Yes. he decided ten minutes later, with the right people and the right assets, it could work.

Popov was eating dinner alone in a disreputable-looking restaurant at the southern end of Manhattan. The food was reportedly good, but the place looked as though rats cleaned up the floor at night. But the vodka here was superb, and as usual, a few drinks helped him think abstractly.

What did he know about John Brightling? Well, the man was a scientific genius and also very impressive in his business skills. He'd been married some years ago to another bright person, now the presidential science advisor, but the marriage had ended badly, and now his employer flitted from bed to bed, one of the most eligible bachelors in America-and with the financial statement to prove it-with his photo frequently in the society pages, which must have been the cause of some discomfort to his former wife.

He had good connections in the community of people admitted into classified matters. This Rainbow group was evidently "black," but he'd gotten its name and the name of its commander in a day. Just one day, Popov reminded himself. That was beyond impressive. It was startling. How the hell had he accomplished that?

And he was into an operation whose implications were more serious than mass murder. That was where his mind came to a befuddled halt once again. It was like walking down a busy street and then coming up against a blank wall. What could a businessman be doing that was more serious than that? More serious than the risk of losing his freedom, even the death penalty? If it were greater than mass murder, then did the plan contemplate even larger murder? But to serve what end? To start a war, perhaps, but he was not a chief of state, and could not, therefore, start a war. Was Brightling a spy, feeding vital national security class information to a foreign government-but in return for what? How could anyone, government or not, bribe a billionaire? No, money was out. What did that leave?

KELLER: I signed up for this, all right? All of it. I may not have had any idea what I was getting into, but that makes me no different from anybody else on Atlantis.

(Teyla turns as she hears movement nearby.)

TEYLA: I'm glad you feel that way.

KELLER: Oh yeah, I know, I know. Before this is all over, I'm gonna have to find all the courage I can muster.

(Teyla sees several Bola Kai running through the trees nearby, heading in their direction.)

TEYLA: Actually, you're gonna need to find it right now.

(Taking the backpack off and tossing it to the side, she bends and pulls her knife out of her boot, holding her stick with the other as the men surround them.)

KELLER: Oh, God.

(This time there are more than just three men for Teyla to deal with – there are at least half a dozen if not more. She squats down as the first couple of men come at her, slashing at their legs with her knife and her stick. More rush in and she gives of her best, hacking and slashing at them while avoiding injury herself. Nearby, Nabel watches in terror, then turns and crawls away. Teyla manages to take down a couple of the men but one gets in a lucky punch across her face. As the impetus spins her around, another man swipes her legs from under her with a club. As she drops to the ground, a couple of men grab Jennifer's arms and start to drag her away. She whimpers in terror.)

KELLER: Teyla!

(One of Teyla's attackers grabs her arm to pull her up. She swings her legs around and kicks his feet from under him. As he falls, another man rushes towards her. Lying on her back, she lifts her legs, wraps her ankles around his neck and uses them to hurl him over her head. She scrambles to her feet and goes at the men again but one of them clubs her across the face and she drops, unconscious. The men pick her up and drag her away.)

Murray seeks $1 billion for VA [ RACKETEER INFLUENCED AND CORRUPT ORGANIZATIONS US Title 18 ]

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray yesterday sent a letter to the White House asking President Bush to shore up a $1 billion shortfall in Department of Veterans Affairs health-care funding.

Murray, D-Wash., said the deficit could be addressed in an emergency-spending bill in the Senate in the days before the Fourth of July recess.

The shortfall for the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, was disclosed by VA officials last week, prompting Murray to accuse the Bush administration of either "deliberate misdirection or gross incompetence."

Yesterday, Murray held a rally outside the Puget Sound VA Health Care System hospital in Seattle to press for the additional funding.

On Feb. 13, as controversy swirled around President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, the White House released more than 400 pages of documents on the press corps, proving, it claimed, that Bush had served honorably and fulfilled his commitment. The sudden rush of records, often redundant, jumbled and out of chronological order, generally left reporters baffled. From Bush’s point of view, the document dump was a political success, as the controversy cooled and the paper trail ran dry.

In retrospect, it’s doubtful that even White House aides understood all the information embedded in the records, specifically the payroll documents. It’s also unlikely they realized how damaging the information could be when read in the proper context. Seven months later, the document dump is coming back to haunt the White House, thanks to researcher Paul Lukasiak, who has spent that time closely examining the paperwork, and more important, analyzing U.S. statutory law, Department of Defense regulations, and Air Force policies and procedures of the 1960s and 1970s. As a result, Lukasiak arrived at the overwhelming conclusion that not only did Bush walk away from his final two years of military obligation, coming dangerously close to desertion, but he attempted to cover up his absenteeism through swindle and fraud.

Lukasiak’s findings, detailed on his Web site the AWOL Project, have since been bolstered and augmented by independent research by the Boston Globe and the Associated Press. On Wednesday, CBS News reported what may be among the most damaging details yet: that Bush’s squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian, complained he was being pressured by higher-ups to give Bush a favorable evaluation after he suspended him from flying for failure to take his annual physical exam. Titled “CYA,” Killian’s memo concluded, “I’m having trouble running interference and doing my job.”

Plot Summary


An overworked woman encounters a pair of armed robbers on the subway home. As he groans and tries to rise, she walks over, kneels onto his back and pulls her stick across his throat, gripping it with both hands as she tugs backwards on it. The man struggles to crawl away, gagging, but Teyla hangs on grimly until the man slumps dead, his throat crushed. She stands up, glares down at him for a moment, then walks away.)

(Back at the riverside, Jennifer limps forward nervously as the not-dead Bola Kai starts to revive. She scrambles forward and picks up his long knife, then hops back, holding it before her with both hands as he starts to drag himself up. She looks at the knife in terror, completely unconvinced that she can use it if the man comes at her, but then Teyla arrives. Jennifer points with the knife to the other man on the ground.)

KELLER: That one's dead, but he's still alive.

Plot Summary


The stooges are taking care of their invalid friend Mary who is confined to wheelchair. What they don't is that Mary is only faking her disability to swindle the insurance company. When the boys witness a hypnotist, "The Great Svengarlic", doing his act on the street, they think he might be able to hypnotize Mary so she can walk. Instead, they become subjects for his show and are hypnotized into walking out on a flagpole high above the ground. When they come out of their trance and realize their predicament, they fall into a window, startling Mary, who jumps from her wheelchair just as the insurance adjuster is about to hand her a check.

Episodic memory is the memory of autobiographical events (times, places, associated emotions, and other contextual knowledge) that can be explicitly stated. It is the collection of past personal experiences that occurred at a particular time and place. For example, if you remember the party on your 6th birthday, this is an episodic memory. They allow you to figuratively travel back in time to remember the event that took place at that particular time and place.

Semantic and episodic memory together make up the category of declarative memory, which is one of the two major divisions of memory. (The other is implicit memory.) The term Episodic Memory was coined by Endel Tulving in 1972. He was referring to the distinction between knowing and remembering. Knowing is more factual (semantic) whereas remembering is a feeling that is located in the past (episodic).

Tulving has seminally defined three key properties of episodic memory recollection. These are: a subjective sense of time (or mental time travel), connection to the self, and autonoetic consciousness. Autonoetic consciousness refers to a special kind of consciousness that accompanies the act of remembering which enables an individual to be aware of the self in a subjective time. Aside from Tulving, others named the important aspects of recollection which includes visual imagery, narrative structure, retrieval of semantic information and the feelings of familiarity.

Events that are recorded into episodic memory may trigger episodic learning, i.e. a change in behavior that occurs as a result of an event. For example, a fear of dogs that follows being bitten by a dog is a result of episodic learning.

One of the main components of episodic memory is the process of recollection. Recollection is a process that elicits the retrieval of contextual information pertaining to a specific event or experience that has previously occurred.
