LOS ANGELES (AP) -- NASA insists it's a coincidence.
Six years from now, a spacecraft named Deep Impact will fire a 1,100-pound copper bullet at the nucleus of a comet, with the aim of blasting out a crater the size of a football field and as deep as a seven-story building.The $240 million mission approved Wednesday by NASA administrators may sound more like fiction than science, but its primary purpose will be to study the makeup of comets.
It just happens to have the same name as last summer's disaster movie "Deep Impact," which was about a comet smacking Earth.
"The name was selected prior to the movie," said James Graf, Deep Impact's project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "It wasn't inspired by it.
Deep Impact is scheduled to be launched in January 2004 and will arrive at comet Tempel 1 on July 4, 2005. The projectile will separate from the spacecraft and hit the comet at 22,300 mph.

A Boulder-built spacecraft that smashed a copper bullet into a comet in 2005 buzzed Earth this week as NASA engineers redirected the probe toward another comet and two new science missions.
The $333 million Deep Impact, built by engineers at Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., captured headlines July 4, 2005, when it slammed an 820-pound slug into comet Tempel 1 and created a shower of cosmic debris.
The bullet was destroyed, but three instruments on the main spacecraft still work, and there's plenty of fuel left, so NASA is sending Deep Impact to another comet

WASHINGTON -- In an extraordinary White House news conference, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton fielded questions for more than an hour Friday, denying that there were improprieties related to the Whitewater Development Corp. or her commodities market investments.
She said the confusion about the Clintons' 1970s financial dealings -- which has sparked the appointment of a special counsel and calls by Republicans for congressional hearings -- resulted from "our inexperience in Washington" and the demands for personal information.
"It's a learning experience -- sometimes a difficult one," Clinton said. "This is not a long-term problem or issue in any way, but I don't want anybody to have the wrong impression of either of us, and I don't want anything to interfere with doing what the people of this country need done."
Clinton appeared relaxed as she sat in a chair framed by the fireplace in the State Dining Room. A portrait of Lincoln looked down upon her.
In a calm, commanding, occasionally apologetic performance, she lost her composure only once, when asked about former President Nixon, who was said to be near death at the time. She noted that she lost her own father a year ago this month and, as tears welled in her eyes, she said she felt for Nixon's daughters.

Ayrton Senna shocked no-one by taking pole position, but second place was a surprise with Stefano Modena taking full advantage of the superior Pirelli qualifying tyres to be second followed by Patrese, Piquet, a disappointed Mansell, Berger, Prost, Moreno, Alesi, and de Cesaris. Alex Caffi had a huge accident in practice and would not participate in the race. Elsewhere Martin Brundle was disqualified for missing a weight check. At the start Senna got away well followed by Modena, Patrese, Mansell, and Prost. In the usual first corner mayhem Berger ran into the back of Piquet, dropping the Austrian to the back of the pack and breaking Piquet's suspension, Berger would later crash out. Senna quickly built up a huge lead over Modena and Patrese, and both the chasers were eliminated on lap 42 when Modena's engine blew in the tunnel spreading oil on the track which caused Patrese to crash. Senna now had a huge lead over Prost and Mansell, but the Englishman was in no mood to stay third and passed Prost with a daring move going into the chicane. Prost would later pit to repair a loose wheel and problems with the stop dropped him down to fifth. Senna duly won his fourth Monaco Grand Prix in five years by 18 seconds over Mansell, who drove a brilliant race, Alesi, Moreno, Prost, and Emanuelle Pirro in the Dallara. The second place finish was Nigel Mansell's first points of the season and the gearbox issues that had troubled the start of his season did not re-appear.

Edward Lee Victor Howard (27 October 1951, Alamogordo, New Mexico – 12 July 2002, Moscow) was a CIA case officer who defected to the Soviet Union.
In 1985, the CIA was being shaken by several security leaks that led to exposure of agents and assets. On August 1, 1985, after twenty-five years of service in the KGB, Vitaly Yurchenko walked into the US Embassy in Rome and defected to the United States. In the following interrogations by the CIA, he accused Howard and another agent, Ronald Pelton, of working for the KGB. In November of that year, Yurchenko himself re-defected back to the USSR. It has been suggested that Yurchenko was acting as a re-doubled agent, seeking to fool the CIA with wrong leads to protect one of the USSR’s then most important CIA traitors, Aldrich Ames.

Executive Summary
On July 19, 1989, at 1516, a DC-10-10, N1819U, operated by United Airlines as flight 232, experienced a catastrophic failure of the No. 2 tail-mounted engine during cruise flight. The separation, fragmentation and forceful discharge of stage 1 fan rotor assembly parts from the No. 2 engine led to the loss of the three hydraulic systems that powered the airplane's flight controls. The flight crew experienced severe difficulties controlling the airplane, which subsequently crashed during an attempted landing at Sioux Gateway Airport, Iowa. There were 285 passengers and 11 crewmembers onboard. One flight attendant and 110 passengers were fatally injured.

History
In the 1960s and '70s, inspectors under regional chief postal inspectors such as Martin McGee, known as "Mr. Mail Fraud," exposed and prosecuted numerous swindles involving land sales, phony advertising practices, insurance ripoffs, and fraudulent charitable organizations using mail fraud charges.

18 U.S.C. § 1341 provides:
Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, or for obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises, or to sell, dispose of, loan, exchange, alter, give away, distribute, supply, or furnish or procure for unlawful use any counterfeit or spurious coin, obligation, security, or other article, or anything represented to be or intimated or held out to be such counterfeit or spurious article, for the purpose of executing such scheme or artifice or attempting so to do, places in any post office or authorized depository for mail matter, any matter or thing whatever to be sent or delivered by the Postal Service, or deposits or causes to be deposited any matter or thing whatever to be sent or delivered by any private or commercial interstate carrier, or takes or receives therefrom, any such matter or thing, or knowingly causes to be delivered by mail or such carrier according to the direction thereon, or at the place at which it is directed to be delivered by the person to whom it is addressed, any such matter or thing, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both. If the violation occurs in relation to, or involving any benefit authorized, transported, transmitted, transferred, disbursed, or paid in connection with, a Presidential declared major disaster or emergency (as those terms are defined in section 102 of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. 5122)), or affects a financial institution, such person shall be fined not more than $1,000,000 or imprisoned not more than 30 years, or both.

That reminds me of something I said to Vince Maraia at Microsoft in February 2002. I told him that I had been feeling something like invincibility until I had that second bicycle accident on 2/1/02 and hit my head. He said something in response that suggests to me he knows who I really was but he said that I should be feeling invincible.

There's Something About a Soldier
War-time films set in stateside training camps abounded in the early Forties. Often, these films utilized the basic plot points of programmers but set the action in the contemporary locale of an army camp. Tom Neal (Detour) plays Wally Williams, a trainee who’s so full of himself that his fellow candidates — and maybe the audience — dislike him. Handsome, cocky, and self-centered, Wally is itching to show up his fellow classmates… especially in front of pretty Carol Harkness (Evelyn Keyes, The Killer That Stalked New York). Wally senses a rival for Carol’s attention and sets his sights on Frank Molloy (Bruce Bennett, Mildred Pierce), an infantryman returning for officer training who struggles with the coursework despite being the only student with actual war-time experience. Utilizing actual footage from Camp Davis, N.C. to augment the backgrounds, veteran Columbia director Alfred E. Green brings us a tale with interesting characters and a plot where self-sacrifice goes wrong.

Wally Williams and Frank Malloy, classmates at Camp Davis, the Anti-Aircraft Officer Candidate School at Wilmington, North Carolina, are extreme opposites. Wally, a glib ex-newspaper sports columnist, has talked his way through most of his life, including the Army. Malloy, on the other hand, won his appointment to the O.C.S. by distinguishing himself on the battle front.
On the gun range one day, Wally assumes responsibility for an accident that sends Malloy to the hospital, although it was not his fault. During Malloy's convalescence, Wally offers to tutor him in mathematics, Malloy's weakness. Wary of Wally's motives, Malloy refuses his help and as a result, flounders helplessly on the final examination. The day before graduation, Wally steals Malloy's exam before it has been graded. A mathematics wizard, Wally quickly substitutes the correct answers and attempts to slip it back into the pile. Wally is apprehended, however, and accused of trying to fix his own paper, then is expelled from school.
