Narrator: Tonight's story on The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction. This, as you may recognize, is a map of the United States, and there's a little town there called Peaksville. On a given morning not too long ago, the rest of the world disappeared and Peaksville was left all alone. Its inhabitants were never sure whether the world was destroyed and only Peaksville left untouched or whether the village had somehow been taken away. They were, on the other hand, sure of one thing: the cause. A monster had arrived in the village. Just by using his mind, he took away the automobiles, the electricity, the machines - because they displeased him - and he moved an entire community back into the dark ages - just by using his mind. Now I'd like to introduce you to some of the people in Peaksville, Ohio. This is Mr. Fremont. It's in his farmhouse that the monster resides. This is Mrs. Fremont. And this is Aunt Amy, who probably had more control over the monster in the beginning than almost anyone. But one day she forgot. She began to sing aloud. Now, the monster doesn't like singing, so his mind snapped at her, turned her into the smiling, vacant thing you're looking at now. She sings no more. And you'll note that the people in Peaksville, Ohio, have to smile. They have to think happy thoughts and say happy things because once displeased, the monster can wish them into a cornfield or change them into a grotesque, walking horror. This particular monster can read minds, you see. He knows every thought, he can feel every emotion. Oh yes, I did forget something, didn't I? I forgot to introduce you to the monster. This is the monster. His name is Anthony Fremont. He's six years old, with a cute little-boy face and blue, guileless eyes. But when those eyes look at you, you'd better start thinking happy thoughts, because the mind behind them is absolutely in charge. This is the Twilight Zone.

What an unusal dream. I can't even begin to describe it. All I remember is that it was about Phoebe and there was a lot of detail to it. It was about this puzzle I was trying to put together. But it is as though I was given strict orders to forget what I had been dreaming of; to not remember the details when I woke up.
I miss my wife.

McKAY: No-no-no-no-no. Physically I am fine, but, but, but this doesn’t make any sense. I can’t figure out any of these, of these equations. I mean, the algorithms are complete gibberish. I mean, this is torture! I can clearly remember exactly how important this all is, but I cannot figure out why, or how.

WEIR: Have there been any other instances of this power manifesting itself?
(Rodney raises a finger.)
McKAY: Powers. Plural.
WEIR: What else can you do besides telekinesis?
McKAY (pointing to his ears with both hands): Well, super-hearing for one, and I’m not sure but I think I may actually be getting smarter. (He smiles.) It’s hard to say for sure because I was pretty smart to start with but, um, recently I’ve been having some ideas that I don’t think even I would have thought of before.
(John frowns at him.)
SHEPPARD: Does super-ego count as a power?
(Rodney looks past him as a female medic comes in.)
McKAY: Oh! Finally!
(The woman is carrying a tray of food: a full plate of meat, potatoes and carrots, together with a sandwich in a plastic container, and two tubs of jello.)
McKAY: Look, keep it coming. (He takes the tray and puts it on his lap.)
SHEPPARD (to Elizabeth): We could also be dealing with a super-appetite, although it’s hard to tell because he ate so much before.
McKAY (picking up the cutlery and cutting into the carrots): Very funny.
(Carson walks over.)
BECKETT: My God! He’s eatin’ again!
McKAY (through a mouthful of carrots): I have a very active metabolism.
BECKETT: Aye -- among other things. The scans show a dramatic increase in synaptic interaction throughout all the sections of Rodney’s brain -- much higher than normal human levels.
(Rodney stops cutting into his food briefly and frowns, then shovels a forkful of meat into his mouth.)
WEIR: There was an incident at S.G.C. just over a year ago.
BECKETT: I recall that file. I studied the data. Fascinating.
WEIR (to John): SG-1 discovered a highly-evolved human being in stasis. It turned out he was a result of experimentation by a Goa’uld named Anubis. He was trying to create a means of artificially accelerating human physiology to the point of ascension.
McKAY: Look, that device I found must have been some kind of an accelerator. We know that the Ancients developed all kinds of powers as they evolved, so it’s just a matter of bad luck that we didn’t run into that lab earlier. (He smiles happily.) Seriously -- me a superhero. Who would have thought it?

SHEPPARD: Whatever, alright? (He walks over to her.) Maybe this thing doesn’t work on everyone. Who knows? But we do know it works on McKay.
WEIR: It has only been a day.
SHEPPARD: Assuming it’s safe -- well, to be honest, even if it’s not -- if we can get a significant advantage over the Wraith and Replicators ...
WEIR: John, I agree -- this device may have great potential.
SHEPPARD: And with great potential comes great responsibility -- I know.
WEIR: Like a lot of other things we have found in this city, it is a very advanced piece of technology. For all we know, it could also be very dangerous.
SHEPPARD: I’m just saying ...

Man Gets 10 Years In Renton Shootout

SEATTLE
Donald Francis Venefra, convicted of second-degree attempted murder and three counts of assault in connection with a shootout near his wife's Renton office, was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in prison.
During sentencing in King County Superior Court, Renton police Officer Larry Strauss emotionally described the trauma he suffered after one of the bullets from Venefra's gun pierced his bullet-resistant vest. Strauss' chest was bruised.
Superior Court Judge Larry Jordan sentenced Venefra, 50, for his role in in the shootout March 19 near his wife's real-estate office in downtown Renton. Venefra apparently had become enraged because his wife failed to make timely mortgage payments on their home.
Strauss, 35, reading from a prepared statement, said his 12-year-old recently told him how upset he gets when he is near the shooting site. Strauss became too emotional to continue, so Deputy Prosecutor Brenda Bannon read the rest of his statement.
"Nearly every day I patrol the Evergreen Building area and re-live this shooting incident . . . the sentence given today shouldn't be minimized because there aren't dead bodies to account for."
"I thought I was in control, but I wasn't," said Venefra, father of five children. "I know it's bizarre. I can't believe it happened. I guess I should have gone for help to take the pressures off me."

The term ballistic trauma refers to a form of physical trauma sustained from the discharge of arms or munitions. The most common forms of ballistic trauma stem from firearms used in armed conflicts, civilian sporting and recreational pursuits, and criminal activity.
The degree of tissue disruption caused by a projectile is related to the size of the temporary versus permanent cavity it creates as it passes through tissue.
Non-fatal gunshot wounds frequently have severe and long-lasting effects, even after the victim has made a successful recovery. Typically, the consequences involve some form of major disfigurement and/or permanent disability.

SHEPPARD: That Ancient device ...
McKAY (reading his mind): ... has accelerated my evolution. (He looks at Elizabeth, reading her mind.) Eventually I’ll reach a point where I’m physically capable of ascension, but ascension takes more than that -- there’s a ... there’s a mental component.
(Elizabeth nods.)
McKAY: I need to know how to make it happen ... which I don’t. (He looks at Ronon, picking up his thoughts.) Yet! I’m getting smarter by the minute. (He looks back to the other two.) It’s a pretty good assumption I’ll be able to figure it out on the way.
(Elizabeth opens her mouth but Rodney starts talking again, speaking her mind for her.)
McKAY: OK, so it’s not as easy as that. Well, even if I don’t, so I stay a highly-evolved human. I mean, I don’t have to ascend -- it’s, it’s a choice, right?
(John grimaces slightly.)
McKAY: No? What do you mean, no? Oh, that stupid Ancient device doesn’t work properly, does it? (He reads Elizabeth’s mind again.) It’s set in motion a series of genetic mutations that will result in my death if I don’t ascend?!
SHEPPARD (quietly to Elizabeth): There is something easier about this.
(Elizabeth nods in agreement.)
McKAY: That’s why the Ancients didn’t put it into common use -- it’s just one more in a long line of abysmal, over-ambitious failures! (He stares at them in horror.) Oh God. I’m a dead man!
(Coleman turns around with a look of concern on her face about something she’s just seen on her screen.)
COLEMAN: Doctor McKay.
McKAY (still distracted by the news he’s just had): Yes, yes -- it’s because I stopped in the middle. I will fix it -- just give me a second here.
ANCIENT LAB. Once again, the lab is plunged into darkness. As the emergency lights come on, Radek, standing on the podium, slams his notepad angrily down onto the console.
ZELENKA: That’s it. (In Czech as he starts to storm out of the lab) I will kill him, he is nuts, complete idiot.
CHAIR ROOM.
McKAY: OK, there’s still time left, right, so maybe there’s a way to reverse the process. Zelenka! Where’s Zelenka? What the hell has he been doing?
COLEMAN: We have massive power surges throughout the grid. Shutdown protocols are not responding.
McKAY (plaintively): Dammit! (He sits down and activates the Chair again.)
CORRIDOR. Radek is making his way back towards the Chair Room. A high-pitched electrical surge can be heard and behind him, electricity sparks. He starts to run away from it but suddenly a massive arc of electricity lances out in front of him and strikes him in the chest. He screams and crashes to the ground.
INFIRMARY. Carson and other medics race into the room wheeling a gurney with Radek lying on it. Carson is pumping air into his lungs.
BECKETT: Come on, Radek, come on. He’s not breathing -- we need to intubate. Start an I.V., wide open. Get that monitor set up.
(They stop the gurney beside a bed.)
BECKETT: Right -- on my count. One, two, three.
(The team pulls Radek across onto the bed. His shirt has been cut open and he has a huge and bloody burn on his chest. Rodney, John and Elizabeth hurry in.)
McKAY: Radek!
BECKETT: Get the leads set up, please.
(The medical team attaches leads to Radek’s body.)
BECKETT: He’s in V-tach. Prepare to de-fib.
(He grabs the paddles and rubs them together as the defibrillator whines.)
BECKETT: Clear.
McKAY: No! (His eyes wide, he steps forward to Radek’s side.)
BECKETT: Rodney, the man is dying.
McKAY: I know. Just give me a second. I know.
(He closes his eyes and puts his hands gently onto Radek’s chest. He concentrates and a yellow glow appears on the wound, which slowly begins to heal. The others stare as the wound fades, leaving Radek’s chest undamaged.

RODNEY’S LAB. NIGHT TIME. Elizabeth walks in and stares in amazement. There are whiteboards all around the room, all of them covered with complicated mathematical calculations. Rodney is writing on one of them.
[Note: all through this scene, Rodney is much quieter than the usual arrogant Rodney McKay that we know. This less belligerent Rodney continues throughout most of the rest of the episode.]
WEIR: Rodney.
McKAY: Hold on. (He walks across to another board, a pen in each hand. He looks at the board, then goes across to a laptop and types on it.)
WEIR: I see you’ve been busy.
McKAY (distracted): Yeah, I invented a new math.
WEIR: Really?!
McKAY: It’s gonna change the human understanding of the universe as we know it. (He walks across to another board, not really concentrating on Elizabeth.) How is Zelenka?
WEIR: Uh, you need to ask?
McKAY: I’m blocking out people’s thoughts. It was becoming too overwhelming. I wasn’t able to think.
(He bends and starts to type on another laptop. Elizabeth looks at him in concern.)
WEIR: Rodney ...
McKAY (straightening up and looking at her): I know what you’re gonna say. (Elizabeth raises her eyebrows at him.) Oh, no ... just intuition, I swear. I just ... I tried to fix the Ancient device but it wasn’t meant to reverse the process. Once the mutation has started, it cannot be stopped.

In the fictional universe of the Stargate franchise, the people of Earth have encountered numerous extraterrestrial races on their travels through the Stargate. In addition to a diversity of alien life, there is also an abundance of other humans, scattered across the cosmos by advanced aliens in the distant past. Some of the most significant species in Stargate SG-1 are the Goa'uld, the Asgard, and the Replicators. Stargate Atlantis, set in the Pegasus galaxy, introduced the Wraith and the Asurans. One of the most influential species in Stargate, the Ancients, have moved on to a higher plane of existence.
Ascension

Ascension is a process by which sufficiently evolved sentient beings may shed their physical bodies and live eternally as pure energy on a higher plane of existence, where their capacity for learning and power grows exponentially. It is a mental, spiritual, or evolutionary enlightenment that can arise as the direct result of achieving a certain level of wisdom and self-knowledge. Ascension was once employed by the Ancients as a means to avoid several issues threatening their species with extinction, but it is sought by major powers on Earth and other races such as the Jaffa later. The concept is introduced in the SG-1 season 3 episode "Maternal Instinct" and becomes a central theme of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

[Daniel and the monk are sitting in the room. Daniel gets to his feet when he sees O'Neill.]

Jack, the markings on the wall are a language. It's a Bible. Uh, no, actually it's more of a instruction book on how to reach this ethereal plane of existence, some kind of other world. It's only natural the Jaffa who found this place would have interpreted it as passage to the afterlife.
O'NEILL
Whoa, slow down there, Grasshopper.
DANIEL
Ok, I'm pretty sure this place was built by an alien race a millennia ago. They may have even visited Earth and inspired the mythologies surrounding the concept of Mother Nature in various cultures.
O'NEILL
So this guy's an alien?
DANIEL
No. Um, I'm pretty sure the aliens discovered a means by which they could ascend to some higher plane of existence and went there…uh, wherever there is. But they left their writings in a shrine as a kind of map for others who wanted to follow them. The monk is someone who has taken up curatorship.
O'NEILL
Kind of janitor?
DANIEL

Twice-shot Renton officer slowly creates a new life

A few weeks ago, Strauss was awarded his second Medal of Valor from the city of Renton for his actions on Jan. 8, 2006. He remains the only person to receive the honor.
Friday, he will be one of six officers to receive the state's law-enforcement Medal of Honor.

Rumblings in the distance are growing louder, as a phalanx of trucks approaches local bookstores. There is a diesel storm rising.
Tom Clancy is back.
Yes, fans, the latest humongous Clancy doorstop of a book - at 752 pages, a veritable Cortez Kennedy among action-thrillers - officially hits stores tomorrow.
There are many stupid people in the world, however, and Clancy has a field day with a bunch of environmental extremists who are the chief (though not only) villains of "Rainbow Six." These wackos have concocted a biological blowout more deadly than anything Saddam Hussein could ever contrive, an apocalypse that will heal Mother Nature
The extremists of "the Project" first manifest themselves in a puzzling series of terrorist strikes
Could these incidents be related? That's the question John Clark ponders, but all Clancy fans know the answer: You bet your nuke-launching sub they're related.

ATLANTIS. Doctors Rodney McKay and Radek Zelenka are investigating an area of the city which is still wet from recent flooding. The area is quite dark and they are carrying torches. As they and a team of scientists walk into a dark corridor, some lights come on.
McKAY: She used to leave the lights on all over the house, every room. It drove my father nuts.
(Radek chuckles.)
ZELENKA: For me, it was my brother -- only we hadn’t lights. He used to leave candles burning everywhere.
McKAY: Yeah, well, you know what? No-one wants to hear any more stories about how poor you were as a child, alright? (Sarcastically) We already feel as sorry for you as is humanly possible.
ZELENKA (to one of the female scientists): He burned the house down, you know?
(The team turns into another dark corridor.)
McKAY: My sister was afraid of the dark, only used to blame me for leaving the lights on. Of course, my father believed her. He never sided with me.
ZELENKA: We had to live in a tent, in the dead of winter for three months.
McKAY: You know, at least my stories relate to what we’re doing.
ZELENKA: So do mine.
McKAY: You know, we’re trekking all over the city shutting down everything the Ancients activated while they were oh-so-briefly in control so that we can stop the power from draining from our one precious ZedP.M. How does that relate to your idiot brother burning the house down?
ZELENKA: Well, if we don’t succeed ...
McKAY: We’re not gonna have to live in a tent in the dead of winter!
ZELENKA: It’s a metaphor.
(The woman who Radek spoke to earlier, Doctor Esposito, has walked ahead of the men while they were bickering and has now reached a closed door. She turns back to the others.)
ESPOSITO: Doctor McKay.
McKAY: Hmm. Thank God.
(He and Radek walk over to her as she tries the door panel.)
ESPOSITO: The control panel. It’s completely shot.
McKAY: Really? You think so? (He starts to attach a device to the panel, talking to Radek as he does so.) You know, I don’t get these Ancients. They’re supposed to be so smart, but why activate something that you don’t need and you’re not using, huh?
ZELENKA: Well, maybe they didn’t have time to get to it -- you know, before the human-form Replicators that you reprogrammed attacked. (He grins smugly at Esposito.)
McKAY (irritated): Yes, yes, we all know what happened.
(He throws Esposito a look as if to say, “Take no notice of him,” then smiles at her, obviously attracted to her. He gets back to work on the panel and shortly afterwards the door opens.)
McKAY: Ah. Voila.
(He leads the team into what looks like a lab.)
ZELENKA: You’re just angry that you couldn’t figure out how to override the Ancient protocols that kept us from shutting this place down remotely from the Control Room.
McKAY: Hey, neither could you.
ZELENKA: Yes, but I didn’t bet everyone a month’s pay that I could do it.
(Rodney points at him in irritation.)
McKAY: You ... OK, you know what? Look around, see if you can figure out how you can turn this place off, whatever it is.
(He steps onto a low podium which has a control panel on it. The panel is illuminated. Radek looks at him nervously.)
ZELENKA: Are you sure you should be going up there?
McKAY: How else am I gonna find out what this room does, huh? (He starts to attach his computer tablet to the panel.) God forbid there should be anything in the Ancient database.
ZELENKA: Oh, there probably is. We just don’t have the time to ...
(Just then, the interface between the panel and the tablet activates.)
McKAY: Ah, here we go.
(The wall screen opposite the panel lights up and Ancient writing appears.)
McKAY: Ah!
ZELENKA (pointing at the control panel): OK, there should be a main power switch ...
McKAY (tetchily): Yes, I know that. What do you think I’m doing?
(Radek pulls his hand back in exasperation.)
ZELENKA: Alright.
(Rodney starts to activate the controls on the panel.)
ZELENKA: Alright -- double or nothing.
(Rodney smiles and turns to him.)
McKAY: Oh, you’re on.
ZELENKA: Alright!
McKAY: Alright. (He looks at the panel.) It’s gotta be around here somewhere.
(Before he can touch anything else, there’s a surge of power and a large green light comes on above the podium. A green glow envelops Rodney. Instinctively Radek steps back. Rodney stares up into the light, startled. Moments later, a beam of light comes down and wraps itself around him. It swirls round him for a couple of seconds

Plot Summary
Based on a play by Henrik Ibsen. A small forest town is trying to promote itself as a place for tourists to come enjoy the theraputic hot springs and unspoiled nature. Dr. Stockmann, however, makes the inconvenient discovery that the nature around the village is not so unspoiled. In fact, the runoff from the local tanning mill has contaminated the water to a dangerous degree. The town fathers argue that cleaning up the mess would be far too expensive and the publicity would destroy the town's reputation, so therefore news of the pollution should be suppressed. Dr. Stockmann decides to fight to get the word out to the people, but receives as very mixed reaction.

Twice-shot Renton officer slowly creates a new life

Larry Strauss misses many things about police work: the camaraderie, the adrenaline rush of 911 calls and catching bad guys.
But he's worried about being a target.
Few would argue with Strauss, who is believed to be the only police officer in Washington state history to have been shot in two different incidents.
Strauss figured that would be all the gunfire he'd ever see. He agreed when people called him lucky, and even joked about taking his good fortune to Las Vegas.
But on Jan. 8, 2006, Strauss stopped three jaywalkers who had crossed seven lanes of traffic. He asked the first for his name and then turned to another of the jaywalkers, Wilford Armstead, who instead bolted and jumped into a nearby van.
Armstead, who had 27 prior felonies, was wanted on a felony arrest warrant in an assault case.
Strauss later testified that he didn't remember much about what happened next. He saw Armstead reach into his coat as if he were about to pull out a weapon and then everything went black.
Armstead fired at Strauss' head four times, police say. One bullet barely missed his bulletproof vest and burrowed into his neck, leaving him with a broken collarbone, a punctured lung, a broken rib and a collapsed trachea.
In December, Armstead was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Doctors told Strauss that he was only a few centimeters from being killed. Strauss felt like the "unluckiest lucky man" alive.
Once able to run 20 miles a week, Strauss was forced to use a wheelchair immediately after the shooting. Though he gradually was able to hobble, walk and eventually run short distances, Strauss said the shooting left him forgetful.
Although the muscular 50-year-old looks healthy, he said the post-traumatic stress caused by the shooting is forcing him to retire. Strauss has been receiving disability pay from the department and will receive a pension after he retires.
A few weeks ago, Strauss was awarded his second Medal of Valor from the city of Renton for his actions on Jan. 8, 2006. He remains the only person to receive the honor.
Friday, he will be one of six officers to receive the state's law-enforcement Medal of Honor.
Strauss and State Patrol Trooper Kelly Kalmbach, who survived being shot last summer, will receive the award from Gov. Christine Gregoire in Olympia.

It reminds me of a pivotal point back in 1990. I was leaving the Navy and I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do. I had spent the last 6 months overseas so there had been no way to even do any interviews until I was actually out of the service. As luck would have it, a buddy of mine, who I had worked with on the USS Wainwright, recommended me to a company he was interviewing with and I got that job. I got out of the Navy on a Friday and I was working there that next Monday.

Plot Summary

That reminds me of something I said to Vince Maraia at Microsoft in February 2002. I told him that I had been feeling something like invincibility until I had that second bicycle accident on 2/1/02 and hit my head. He said something in response that suggests to me he knows who I really was but he said that I should be feeling invincible.

(Kolya turns to see John standing on the other side of the square. He holsters his pistol as John walks closer.)

SHEPPARD: The feeling’s mutual.
KOLYA: Goodbye, Sheppard.
(All around John, Kolya’s soldiers open fire on him. The bullets bounce harmlessly off a green glow which surrounds him. John smiles smugly as the soldiers continue to fire until they have all emptied their weapons.)
SHEPPARD: Well, now that you’ve got that out of your system ...
(He unzips his vest and reveals the shield device attached to his T-shirt. He laughs, but his smile fades as the device fritzes and its green light flickers.)
SHEPPARD: Oh, crap!
(The device groans as it deactivates.)
KOLYA (to his soldiers): Reload!
LUCIUS (offscreen): Don’t bother.
(Kolya and his soldiers turn as Lucius walks into view, followed by some of the townspeople.)
KOLYA: You should have left town when you had the chance.
(Lucius smiles as, all around the square, the townspeople burst out of their houses carrying various implements like shovels and pitchforks, together with some rifles. They surround the soldiers, forcing them to lower their weapons. Lucius smiles at Kolya.)
LUCIUS: I’m sure you’re thinking the same thing right about now.
SHEPPARD (to Kolya): If I gave you the opportunity to surrender, I don’t suppose you’d take it?
(Kolya smiles, then chuckles ironically.)
SHEPPARD: I didn’t think so.
(Everyone goes quiet as John and Kolya face up to each other. They lock gazes as the camera shows their respective hands hovering near their gun holsters. It’s a classic Wild West shootout scene: all that’s missing is the Ennio Morricone music. There’s a long dramatic pause, then Kolya goes for his gun. John is quicker and fires a single shot. Plot Summary
As a result of an arctic nuclear test, a carnivorous dinosaur thaws out and starts making its way down the east coast of North America. Professor Tom Nesbitt, only witness to the beast's existence, is not believed, even when he identifies it as a "rhedosaurus" to paleontologist Thurgood Elson. All doubts disappear, however, when Elson is swallowed whole during an oceanic bathysphere excursion to search for the creature. Soon thereafter the rhedosaurus emerges from the sea and lays waste to Manhattan Island until Nesbitt comes up with a plan to try to stop the seemingly indestructible beast.

Ousted Officials Want Iraqi Compensation, Expect War

TAIF, SAUDI ARABIA — This is what Kuwait`s government-in-exile wants: first its country back, then ``penny-for-penny compensation`` from Iraq`s Saddam Hussein, including payments for ``psychological damage.``
This is what Kuwait`s government-in-exile expects: Saddam Hussein will not give in without a fight.
``Personally, I do not think this man is seeking peace. He only knows one language, which is war. He is hungry for power. He is betting that he can stay in Kuwait longer than the multinational force can be kept in Saudi Arabia,``
said Kuwaiti Housing Minister Yahya al-Sumait.
Planning Minister Suleiman al-Mutawa, who is thought to be one of the most trusted advisers of the emir, or ruler, of Kuwait, said that it was only through ``intervention by the Almighty`` that the royal family escaped from advancing Iraqi forces on Aug. 2.
The two men spoke in a lengthy interview in the luxurious, heavily guarded Taif Sheraton, southeast of Mecca, where the royal family and top ministers are quartered, about 100 people in all. An employee, careful not to be overheard, called it ``a gilded cage.``
The ultramodern hotel, overlooking a rocky promontory 100 miles from the Red Sea, is a splendid place for exile. It has flowing fountains, marble walls, and a double guard: crack Saudi troops outside and Kuwaiti troops inside. The food is French and the cars in the parking lot are German and big. Wild baboons play in the trees lining the steep, winding approach road.
Sumait and Mutawa wore traditional long Arab robes but spoke fluent English with clipped British accents.
They were bitterly firm in describing the ruling family`s determination to return to full power and to hold Saddam Hussein liable for the losses he caused, including those of the hundreds of thousands of foreign workers who were driven out of Kuwait.
``There is an Arab proverb that says if you have a disease, you use every means to get rid of it, even if you have to use hot steel to burn it out,``
Sumait declared.
``What was built in 25 years, he (Hussein) destroyed in 25 minutes. Perhaps he is going to have to leave Kuwait, and we hope soon, perhaps by force.``
In addition to the restoration of the emir to the throne, Mutawa said,
``Definitely, there has to be a penny-for-penny compensation for damage, material and spiritual.``
But if Iraq already owes payments on billions of dollars worth of outstanding loans, he was asked, how can it make that compensation?
``I don`t care where the money comes from,`` he responded, ``because I simply cannot allow a country to be devastated to that extent and let him
(Saddam Hussein) just say, `Let us be friends.` ``
While conceding that reparations could easily run to tens of billions of dollars, Mutawa expressed outrage at the Iraqi campaign to strip Kuwait of all goods of any value.
``You know, they have even taken the desks from our schools,`` he said bitterly.
He also said the Iraqis should pay compensation to Kuwait`s foreign workers, who made up an estimated two-thirds of Kuwait`s 2 million population before the invasion.
``We will never forget all our guests that have been deprived of their life savings,`` he said.
Sumait said Iraq should eventually be forced to reimburse the Kuwaiti government for the relief funds it is now providing for these workers, thousands of whom are in crowded refugee camps in Jordan.
As an example of the ``psychological damages`` that would be sought, he cited the case of a man ``who is now insane after his two daughters were raped in front of him.``
Mutawa burst out: ``Is this the brave new world we are trying to achieve? There are only a few days left in the 20th Century, and we are seeing a return to barbarism.``
The two ministers sharply dismissed any legitimacy for the invasion.
They said there was no credibility to Iraqi complaints that the Kuwaitis were pumping oil out of Iraqi reservoirs by slant drilling from wells near the border, and that Kuwait was reluctant to write off $14 billion in loans it gave Iraq during its long war with Iran.
``Our wells were deliberately away from the border, 2 kilometers (about a mile and a quarter), and they were drilling straight down,`` Mutawa said.

Gameplay
Command and Conquer Generals operates like most other real-time strategy games, in that the player must construct a base, acquire resources, build various combat and support units, and defeat opponents. Various unit types can be constructed, ranging from infantry to vehicles and air units. The player may control the United States of America, the People's Republic of China, or the Global Liberation Army, and each side has its unique characteristics and abilities. All sides share some similarities, such as training infantry at a barracks, building armored vehicles at a factory, possessing "high tech" buildings needed for more advanced units, possessing a means to acquire additional resources and possessing a unique superweapon.

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.
The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.
Role in the Nazi state
When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.
World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.
Organization
The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels
Propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.
Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."
Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government. However, you cannot lie! We must never lie!

SPRINGFIELD — Using the dedication of the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum as a backdrop, President Bush Tuesday likened his own push to spread liberty around the globe to the 16th president's struggle to emancipate slaves during the Civil War.
"Do the promises of the Declaration apply beyond the culture that produced it?" Bush asked a crowd of thousands gathered outside the grand showcase for the state's most revered resident.
"Are some, because of birth or background, destined to live in tyranny--or do all, regardless of birth or background, deserve to live in freedom? Americans have no right or calling to impose our own form of government on others. Yet, American interests and values are both served by standing for liberty in every part of the world."
Bush's speech capped a day of testimonials to the legacy of Lincoln and an extended weekend of gala events marking the opening of a $145 million complex steeped in controversy yet seen as a magnet to both elevate this city's stature and fill its hotel rooms and restaurants with tourists.
Bush, who considers Lincoln his favorite president and keeps a bust of him in the Oval Office, was joined on the dais by a range of Illinois political luminaries of both parties--among them Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Plano, Illinois' two Democratic senators, Minority Whip Dick Durbin and Barack Obama, and Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
Former Republican Gov. Jim Edgar was also among those on the stage. But former Republican Gov. George Ryan, who was instrumental in securing the bulk of the funding for the museum and an adjacent library, watched from the third row of the audience. Ryan, currently awaiting trial on federal corruption charges, was accused by critics during his tenure of trying to use the project as a patronage dumping ground.
"The project was delayed and mired in controversy," said Blagojevich. "This is not a shrine. Neither is it a mausoleum. In these galleries, you will meet Lincoln living."

As the development of the strategic air campaign progressed, air planners realized that they needed to include plans to overcome the Iraqi air defenses. Over the previous ten years, the Soviet Union had helped Iraq develop a fully integrated air defense system equipped with hundreds of surface-to-air missile sites and more than 8,000 fixed and mobile antiaircraft guns. Studying the overall system carefully, Capt. O'Boyle made a novel suggestion. Intelligence showed that the Iraqis had placed three early warning radars as close as one mile to the Saudi border. He suggested using SOCCENT assigned Army SOF teams from the 5th Special Forces Group to attack and destroy the sites. This would create a critical gap in the Iraqi radar coverage through which flights of allied strike aircraft could safely enter Iraqi airspace and then proceed to their individual targets.
To reach the radar sites, the 5th Group teams would infiltrate on foot and be extracted by MH-60s from the 3d Battalion of the 160rh SOAR after they had destroyed the sites. SOCCENT worked up a plan to accomplish that. To be successful, though, the teams needed seventy-two hours to infiltrate to the three radar facilities. However, General Schwarzkopf had already told President Bush that he could initiate combat with just sixty hours of preparation and, in a rather heated meeting with Col. Johnson, disapproved the plans.
A few weeks later, the Iraqis moved the three radar sites 20, 27, and 40 miles, respectively, back into Iraq and hardened the sites. Capt. O'Boyle suggested that MH-53s with their enhanced navigation capability attack the sites with their 50-caliber machine guns. Col. Johnson briefed this idea to Lt. Gen. Homer and Gen. Schwarzkopf, who approved the concept for further planning. When Lt. Col. Comer was briefed on the plan, he designated Capt. Corby Martin to be the planner and flight leader for the mission with Mai. Ben Pulsifer, Maj. Bob Leonik, and Capt. Mike Kingsley serving as the other aircraft commanders. However, Comer was skeptical of the initial plan, believing that the machineguns would not be powerful enough to destroy the sites)
Comer discussed the mission with Col. Benny Orrell, (USAF), serving at SOCCENT, who suggested that they bring along some U.S. Army AH-64 Apaches with Hellfire missiles, Hydra--70 rockets, and their 30 mm machineguns to do the job. The 1st SOW wing commander, Col. George Gray, was briefed on the new suggestion and received permission from Col. Johnson to talk to Army Lt. Col. Dick Cody, the commander of 1st Battalion of the 101st Aviation Regiment, an Apache battalion assigned to the 101st Air Assault Division, also located at the King Fahd Airport.
EAGER ANVIL
The mission would be called EAGER ANVIL. Its concept was relatively simple. The MH--53s would utilize their excellent navigation systems to lead the Apaches over the almost featureless desert to the correct firing positions because they were much more accurate and reliable for longer range navigation than the older Doppler systems on the Army helicopters. One of the Pave Low gunners suggested to Captain Martin that they guide the Apaches to a pre-designated position and then mark it with chemical night lights. The AH-64 pilots could then fly over that point and update their Doppler systems for the final run in to the actual firing positions for their targets. Simple and logical, Martin wrote the procedure into the plan.
Captain Kingsley was also concerned that one or more of the Apaches might get lost in the possible mayhem and run out of fuel. One of his flight engineers, TSgt. Jeff Morrison, developed a procedure so that, if necessary, a Pave Low could ground transfer fuel from its tanks to the affected Apache, and make sure that the necessary equipment was aboard each Pave Low.

As the aircrews conducted their planning and unit training, Intelligence sources reported that the three sites had again been moved this time about ten miles closer to the border--and consolidated into just two sites with several Soviet-style search and acquisition radars each. Accordingly, the 20th pilots modified the plan, and then took it to Col. Johnson at SOCCENT. He approved it and briefed it to General Schwarzkopf, who approved the use of Apaches from the 101st Division and cleared them to begin joint training. Comer met with Lt. Col. Cody to plan the mission in detail.
The force would be called "Task Force Normandy." Two flights of two MH-53s each would lead four Apaches to each site and provide combat recovery support. The two units trained for the mission through the fall. They also received permission to live-fire six Hellfire missiles in the Saudi desert.
In December, Col. Gray personally briefed General Schwarzkopf that the joint team was ready to execute its mission. When Gray assured him that the mission would be 100 percent successful, Schwarzkopf replied, "Okay, colonel, then you get to start the war." The joint team held a final rehearsal in January and it went perfectly. 'We were eager for the mission to fly," said Lt. Col. Comer, and noted in his personal journal that, "Not since Desert One in Iran had special operations helicopters been given a better chance for a good mission." (7)
As 1990 was waning, President Bush continued efforts to solve the crisis diplomatically. Concurrently, General Schwarzkopf and his commanders focused upon finalizing their campaign plans and building up their forces for possible offensive operations to forcibly extract Iraqi forces from Kuwait. In support of those efforts, on January 11, SOCCENT activated a forward operating location at Al Jouf in western Saudi Arabia, and Lt. Col. Comer was ordered to move the 20th SOS there. Three days later he and his airmen had completed the move. Lt. Col. Cody and his Apaches also deployed forward to Al Jouf.
On January 16, it was obvious that all nonmilitary efforts to resolve the Kuwaiti occupation had failed, and President Bush directed that military operations begin. SOCCENT notified all of its units that the war would start the next morning at 3:00 AM. Comer notified all of his personnel that EAGER ANVIL would commence that night. Other unit aircraft and crews would be on alert for CSAR tasking at several locations. Additionally, when the EAGER ANVIL MH-53s returned from the mission, they would be reassigned to CSAR duties. At 9:30 PM, Comer held a final flight briefing for the Pave Low and Apache crews. There really was nothing more to say. All recognized that they were about to take part in a very significant event and, while nervous, were extremely confident that they were the right force at the right time and place. All used the short time available before proceeding to their aircraft for private moments, actions, and prayers. Captain Kingsley felt the gravity of the moment, noting: "I immediately had butterflies in my stomach. Oh my gosh, the weight of the world is on this mission. A lot of people could die if we fail." He grabbed Corby Martin and went over the details of the mission for the "hundredth" time before heading out to the aircraft. (9)
The crews coordinated their engine starts so that the entire formation lifted off from Al Jouf at 1:00 AM. The "Red Team" Pave Lows, flown by Capt. Martin and Maj. Ben Pulsifer and crews were joined by their four Apaches and set course for the western target now designated "Nevada." Capt. Newman Shufflebarger led the Apaches. The second section of "White Team" Pave Lows, commanded by Capt. Kingsley and Maj. Robert Leonik and crews did likewise and proceeded to the eastern target, now designated "California." Lt. Col. Comer flew as Leonik's copilot and maintained communications contact with the SOCCENT command center where Colonels Gray and Johnson were closely monitoring the mission. The White Team Apaches were led by Lt. Col. Dick Cody.
At 2:12 AM, the Task Force Normandy helicopters crossed into Iraq and Comer radioed the proper code word to SOCCENT. The pilots varied their flight paths as necessary to avoid known or suspected enemy observation posts or Bedouin locations. The western target was thirteen miles farther; the eastern target, twenty-three miles. The Pave Lows used their TF/TA radar and FLIR to stay less than fifty feet above the ground and exploited whatever variations in terrain were available in an attempt to mask their flight paths from the search radars at the sites. At one point, the navigational system on Leonik's Pave Low failed, and the crew had to scramble to reset it. All crews observed some small arms tracers, but they were inaccurate and of no consequence.
The Pave Lows flew to the pre-briefed drop-off points, where their gunners and flight engineers threw out the bunches of green chemical sticks. The Pave Low pilots then turned south. As they departed, the Apaches slowly passed over the chemical lights and updated their Doppler navigational systems for the final ten-mile run to their individual targets. Slipping through the clear, dark night, they pulled into firing position exactly ninety seconds early. The gunners could see the facilities at the sites; they matched the Intelligence pictures that they had been shown. The Apache crews could also see enemy troops around the structures.
Suddenly, the lights began to go off. One of the pilots mused, "I think they know we are here." Thirty seconds prior, the Apache crews turned on their ranging lasers. At exactly 2:37:50 AM, White Team Apache pilot 2d Lt. Tom Drew keyed his radio and broadcast, "Party in ten." Precisely ten seconds later all crews began firing their Hellfire missiles. Twenty seconds later, the deadly weapons began to detonate against the structures. The generators were hit first, then the command bunkers, and finally, the radar dishes themselves. Several Iraqi enemy soldiers died in the barrage.
Once all the Hellfires had been expended, the helicopters flew toward the sites and ripple-fired their rockets. Two thousand meters from the sites, they opened up with their 30 mm chain guns and riddled what remained of the compounds with every bullet they had. Four minutes after it started, it was over. The Apaches had expended twenty-seven Hellfire missiles, 100 Hydra-70 rockets, and 4,000 rounds of 30 mm cannon fire. They turned south, rejoined with the Pave Lows, and headed home. En route, Captain Martin's crew observed what appeared to be the launch of two SA-7 missiles. They utilized their on-board defensive systems and some aggressive maneuvering to escape the missiles.
Outbound, Comer radioed a code word message to SOCCENT headquarters reporting their complete success. "SOF targets destroyed." Colonel Johnson personally reported the results to General Schwarzkopf's command center. "Thank God," he responded. (10)
The combination of the Pave Lows and Apaches had worked as hoped. All of the planning, calculating, and training had paid off. As Capt. Martin was leading his formation back to the south, he could see in the clear night air above the massive formations of allied aircraft heading for the radar gap. He remembered:
You could look off to the south and there were blinkers lined up. You could see a long way on goggles. And it's also desert, so it's clear. There were anti-collision lights lined up; it looked like an LA freeway.... And they were all chasing these big blinkers ... [the]tankers. Then all of a sudden, there was a point where there were no more lights. So they would get gas, drop off, turn lights off, and head north. (11)
One F-15E fighter pilot who was in that massive gaggle of firepower wrote a thank you letter to the men of Task Force Normandy which said, "During our [flight intelligence] brief, we noticed our route of flight took us right over an active [radar] site.... We were told not to worry about it! We saw the explosions and your helicopters in our FLIR as we flew over you. There was immense relief!" (12)
Captain Kingsley noted their contribution to the operation when he said, "We were the logical choice because we have an advanced navigational system....They had the confidence in us to lead them in so that when it was time to destroy these radar sites they were fresh and ready to go." (13)
Approaching the airfield near Ar Ar, just twenty-five miles south of the border, the four Pave Lows of Red Team and White Team assumed CSAR alert duties as their Apaches proceeded back to Al Jouf. The joint force was dissolved, and the two units joined their larger elements and prepared for other missions.

DAEDALUS. The ship is in orbit above the planet. As Rodney and Ronon are beamed in, John and Teyla walk over to join them.
SHEPPARD: We could use your help. Come on.
(As he walks away, Ronon and Teyla follow him but Rodney doesn’t move.)
McKAY: Whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa, what’s going on?
(John turns to face him.)
SHEPPARD: Elizabeth diverted the Daedalus on its way back to Earth to check up on us.
TEYLA: Colonel Caldwell believed that the situation had deteriorated. He feared that we would become casualties of war and so beamed us out.
SHEPPARD: Yeah, but I talked him into beaming us back, but we’ve gotta do something first, so come on.
(He walks back towards Rodney, grabs his vest and pulls him into motion.)
McKAY: Do what?
SHEPPARD: I’ve got a plan.
McKAY: Oh, what plan?
SHEPPARD: Oh, come on, already.
TEYLA (to Ronon, as they follow the other two): How’s the situation on your end?
DEX: All-out war. You?
GELDAR. The console screen shows several more dirigibles heading into Hallona. Rodney and Ronon walk down the stairs to meet Nola.
NOLA: Where did you go? What happened?
McKAY: Uh, nowhere, nowhere. We were just upstairs.
NOLA: Someone said you vanished into thin air.
McKAY: What?! No, that’s ridiculous. How could we vanish?
HELKIN: The airships have passed the southern forest. They’re nearing their targets.
NOLA: Let’s hope we strike first before Baden’s army reaches our villages. We’ll destroy their will to fight.
McKAY: OK. (He takes Nola by the shoulders and turns her towards him.) Listen to me. For two years now I have been the Oracle to your people. I have given you much wisdom and guidance and bestowed much of my knowledge. Look, it’s like you said: I was a god.
DEX (warningly): Easy.
McKAY (raising a finger in acknowledgement to him as he continues to talk to Nola): And yes, yes, I may just be a man
