Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

Feinstein: Snowden never voiced NSA concerns

By Carla Marinucci

Updated 11:12 pm, Thursday, May 29, 2014

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, on Thursday strongly challenged former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden's assertion that he voiced concerns to the agency about its intelligence activities before he began leaking government secrets.

"In April, we asked the NSA if they had any contacts with Snowden" regarding warnings he may have made about collecting metadata on Americans' phone calls and e-mails and about overseas spying, Feinstein said in a meeting with The Chronicle editorial board.

Although Snowden said he had "left a paper trail" of concerns about the NSA, that's not what the record showed, Feinstein said.

Snowden made the assertion during an interview with NBC News this week, his first ever on U.S. television. He said he had tried to raise concerns about NSA spying

It is interesting to look at the map for that one place I lived, in my artificial memory at least, in Charlotte, NC. My street address was Dresden

A close-by street is named Sheffield. And that near-by park named Sheffield is I think where I remember stopping in one Saturday morning to watch some kind of Little League baseball game, which I remember enjoyed watching because it reminded me of playing baseball in my youth. All this, my apartment, the park, most of where I was riding my bicycle, was in between the two main roads Independance and Central.

There were several interesting dream sequences as I was asleep after waking up a while ago. The only scenes I can remember now are the ones I think happened just before I awoke. The details are vague now and I cannot remember which sequence of the two occurred first but in one sequence I seemed to have infiltrated an enemy facility and I was walking towards my destination. I can still visualize to some extent the walls and stairwells and walkways along the wall. Then I was fighting with someone and I can remember seeing my boot as the bottom of my black leather military boot struck him squarely on the chest and I am left with the sense that I had lunged at him and traveled through the air as I kicked him. I knocked him down and he was a large fellow and then I was walking away and again towards my destination which I do not now remember from the dream. I had traveled up to another level and was still walking and I was then fighting that other soldier again and I aware that I had several pistols and an assault rifle but I did not want to use them. One of my pistols even had a silencer but I did not want to shoot him. I subdued him again and I am left with the vague sense that I eventually did have to kill him with my weapon.

This was it. The ending of this episode. I dreamed of this while asleep and it is fleeting now; ether of my mind.

This note largely does not flow contiguously with the line of thought of my mind. I crafted parts here and I crafted parts elsewhere. A lot of it was crafted contiguously as I watched the episode.

And then this was it. In the last two minutes of this episode is The Tower.

And then time. Time is meaningless. Time is a chemical function of my physical brain. You crack Time in the physical human brain then you crack all physical human memory.

That moment was so clear.

And that is not it. That is not the most recent episode I have watched. In the time I have worked to post this note I have remembered a later episode that I vaguely recall watching. I recall it because I associate it with sleeping dream in reality. I recall that fictional "FBI agent" character interrogating his prisoner and something about a candle or something about a light in the darkness and that watching that scene reminded me of a sleeping dream from earlier and I posted that observance here in my blog.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: Sunday, May 08, 2011 Posted by H.V.O.M at 11:15 PM

I have thought several times about a dream I had before waking up earlier today in the morning. I think about it again now, especially considering how my dreams are relevant to observations I made later in the day after having the dream, after watching on television the scene I reference now. The scene only lasted for probably a second or two of dreaming but I have thought of it several times today because of the good feeling I had during the dream. I cannot recall how it started out but the part I remember is that I seemed to be entering an office building and I got a pass to clip to my uniform shirt and I had full access to the building. What I did though is sit in a chair in the lobby, which I can only partially visualize and I could have gone on in but I was just sitting there watching people enter and leave and I think that is what I wanted to do. I looked at my watch. I cannot recall the precise time I saw in the dream but my watch might have read 12:38 PM. I sat there for a while and if I would have wrote about this dream back in early 2006 I would have wrote about how the narrator was talking to me in the dream but in the dream, no one spoke to me during that series of scenes. There almost seemed to be comments about why I was sitting there when I could go in to the office area and I had full access to that building. I was wearing a United States military uniform in the dream and after waking up I decided I was wearing a dress white United States Marine Corps officers uniform that is no longer in service. The uniform was very similar to the United States Navy officers ceremonial dress uniform but what I read earlier today is that uniform was phased in 1998, or maybe 2000. So anyway I was clearly wearing a United States military uniform and I got up from the chair in the lobby and I started walking through the office section and I was very glad to be there. I have been left with the sense all day about how I was back home. I have also been thinking that was some kind of office that I worked out of and that is here in the United States and I had been gone for a while and I was glad to be back and I was walking around and no one had realized yet that I was back. That was how the dream ended. I was walking around through the office and I noted that someone I knew didn't work in the same place. I was going somewhere specific but that was where the dream ended and I woke up and I think that was when I got up out of bed.

But anyway, as I read back through the scene I remember that before that scene was something about me being trapped in someplace that seemed to be a deep well. I was aware that I was perched on a surface and there was very dark water just below me in reach and I was worried about what was under that surface. But I was definitely trapped in a well, a long vertical cylinder of a wall made of stones and there seemed to be just enough lighting to see my surroundings. At one point I caught a frog. I was keeping it because I might have had to use it for food. But I didn't have to because I was only trapped down there for eight days without food and water and I didn't want to eat the frog, which was the only source of possible food that presented itself to me during that time I was trapped in the well. So then the part in the office building seemed to happen.

So that would explain it.

I was going to stop and take some digital images of that vision-scene of the the doctor-wife and compare that to my memory of that house I lived in Greer South Carolina with Tracie and compare that with my writings of how I was trying to remember if that was the year 1993 and compare that with her child throwing hysterics over the boy in the hospital bed bandaged and she screaming something similar to "Who hurt Dillion?" I watched these episodes many years ago here on this same source and I wrote about it in my blog and about how I had never watched the television series when it premiered on television because it looked to stupid. Now I find these characters a lot less objectionable. I might have written about how that starring character, the guy with the bracelet, who is married to the doctor, the doctor who is looking down at the guy sitting on the sofa and with the profile that reminds me of myself, reminds me of Mark Howe. In my memory of the 1993 he was the office manager at Universal Financial at that time and had once slept on my living room sofa, although when I lived there alone. Her son "Dillion" at this point in the series is autistic of questionable severity and she asks if she has ever seen him before, once again in profile. That doctor-wife seems unfamiliar to me, in terms of look-alike, but she does remind me of "Rachel" from "Revolution" who was also a character I forget now from "Lost." I had blogged about these episodes years ago but I stopped abruptly after a few of the episodes of that abruptly cancelled series of 23 episodes that are listed and I never went back until now to watch them. In the next few days I am going to try to watch all of them as they are still available from free viewing on tv.com and other other sources. I cannot recall off-hand without looking, and I haven't, which episode I last watched but I think it was the one I blogged about how there was something about a tower and that was a similar detail in "Revolution".

Oh, and this is sort of a combined note. These notes seem especially pointless now and even more so day by day and so I write now thinking and hoping this will be the last note I ever post here. And I think about how my notes, in this sort of free-text section, is not contiguous in the formation of thoughts in my mind during creation of this note. I also reference here something I randomly watched recently on broadcast television and that doesn't conclude until next Wednesday but that seems to have been available elsewhere back in March 2004 and that is especially compelling to me.

Contemplate Death. That is how I would best describe the notion recently when I was out walking around. I started walking more recently because I am tired of being overweight. Being overweight is a new experience for me. Having trouble last winter tying my bootstrings was especially annoying and in recent weeks I feel I have made some good progress. For me, weight gain is very easily lost. If I were to buy a bicycle and ride around for a month I could possibly lose 50 pounds in that time. So I guess. I threw away my bathroom scale a few months ago and I have no idea how much weight I have lost from just a few simple long walks. But I feel it, the difference.

And I did. I had a long walk and long time to think and I did think it out.

So anyway, the usual projections were out there I have seen with varying level of perception these past few decades and they are predictable.

to see if the Fort Meade supercomputers can do anything else with it.
Look at him-- Walking around, not a care in the world, not the least bit surprised which means he knew the blackout was gonna happen, which means he was involved.
Conspiracy theory is comforting.
It presents you with an enemy, gives you someone to arrest, put on trial.
Well, this is not a visual effect we're looking at.
This man is real.
I just hope we can find him before he does something worse.
What's worse than causing worldwide devastation? Causing it twice.

Would you say that was Cross?
Without an element of doubt.
Some airports have a television eye service.
They keep a video tape running, which they erase the next day. I had a hunch.
And it paid.
It should have been fairly easy to trace the destination of a priest.
Normally Washington airport wouldn't have too many priests departing,
but today was the last day of a conference.
More than 300 priests departed, in all directions, between 3 and 6pm,
Cross amongst them.
- Brilliant. - I agree.
- He had to have help. - No. Messenger boys.
The plan was Cross's. Would you agree to that, Scorpio?
Mm-hm.

Face it, it's been a little bit of a goose chase here, man.
Tell that to Didi Gibbons.
And what about this? I saw it in my vision, and it came true.
Has Charlie ever made you one of those before? Yeah.
Okay, well, then it's not that amazing.

That's why they're called coincidences.

You telling me that's a coincidence, too? You think this qualifies for probable cause? The county judge will.
He's my father-in-law.

We're All Okay - Revolution - Season 2, Episode 21

The next day, Rachel is scouring the countryside, looking for Aaron and Priscilla. She's confused at first, but after a few seconds, the sound she's hearing is definitely music. And. not just any music. Starship's We Built This City. In the woods. Or rather, from the creepy house in the woods. Rachel slowly approaches the door, and is about to circle the house looking for a way in, when Aaron yanks open the door and tells her to leave. Now. Since Aaron can't actually hurt anyone, ever, Rachel simply storms past him into the house. Where she sees the lights. And the TV. And the Patriots, still frozen in their gas masks. The worst, is a middle-aged woman, sitting in front of a mirror

NASA says wire rubbing on screw caused short during shuttle liftoff

MARK CARREAU Staff

TUE 08/10/1999

Houston Chronicle

The electrical short during last month's launching of the shuttle Columbia was caused by a wire rubbing on a screw head, NASA said Monday.

The repeated chafing over many flights had worn away the wire's insulation. Technicians should have applied Teflon tape to the wire before the launch as a protective measure, said James Hartsfield, a spokesman for NASA's shuttle program.

Managers have ordered new inspections on the shuttle Endeavour to check for similar wear. Endeavour is slated for a Sept. 16 liftoff with a sophisticated radar system to map the Earth's surface.

Led by Eileen Collins, the first woman spacecraft commander, the shuttle Columbia blasted off late July 22 with the $1.55 billion Chandra X-ray Observatory. Five seconds after launch a short disrupted the primary computers on two of Columbia's three main engines.

Backup controllers took over, but had they faltered Collins and her four crewmates would have been forced to attempt an unprecedented emergency landing.

Apocalypse Now - Redux

Rated a major success.
He received no official clearance.
He just thought it up and did it.
What balls.
They were gonna nail his ass to the floorboards for that one.
But after the press got ahold of it...
they promoted him to full colonel instead.
Oh, man, the bullshit piled up so fast in Vietnam.
You needed wings to stay above it.
This sure enough is a bizarre sight in the middle of this shit.
Expecting us this time?
Damned if I know.
Hello. Hello.
Jesus--
Wow.
- It goes back up into the truck. - What?
We gotta get all that stuff up.
Hau Phat. You ever been up here before, Chef?
I bet you we can score up here.
Check out the bikes, Lance.
Yamaha, Suzuki. Yeah!
- That's a good one. - Yeah, Sukiyaki.
Yeah, man. This is something.
- Please! - This must be the guy.
Right over there.
Sergeant. Sergeant.
Three drums of diesel fuel, PBR five--
Come on, man! Move!
We don't have time. One hour. That's all. What do you want?
- Can I get some Panama Red? - Yeah, I'll get you Panama Red.
- Sergeant? - Destination?
I don't have no destination.
I can't do a goddamn thing without a destination.
- Sarge? Sarge? - I need a destination!
I can't do a thing about it with a destination.
These guys are with me. Destination's classified.
I carry priority papers from Com-Sec Intelligence.
Okay, right, sir. Hey, listen, it's a real big night.
Eight bucks for that-- Hey!
All right. Damn.
-Just give him some fuel. - You got it.

Hah. Mangos. That was Pat Reese in Puerto Rico on the Wainwright in 1989. Despite my new-found sense of adventure from the Persian Gulf that really wasn't that new from the swamps of the Little River in Arkansas the citrus pleasure of mangoes was disappointing.

As you all dullards out there know that was the dullard ship.

There was something else really clever and laser-guided witty relative to recent events that 99.9999%(I guess) of you don't know about but now if that past few seconds vaporizes from my mind.

Hey, Chief, I'm gonna go get those mangos now, okay?
- Take somebody with ya. - Yeah, I'll take--
I'll go with him.
Chef?
- Yes, sir? - How come they call you that?
- Call me what, sir? - Chef.
- Because you like mangos and stuff? - No, sir, I'm a real chef.
- I'm a saucier. - Saucier?
Yes, sir. See, I come from New Orleans.
I was raised to be a saucier, a great saucier.
- What's a saucier? - You specialize in sauces.
Gotta be a mango tree here somewhere.
Then, I was supposed to go to Paris...
study at the Escoffier school.
But then I got orders for my physical.
Hell, I joined the navy.
Heard they had better food.
Cook school-- that did it.
- Yeah, how's that? - You don't wanna hear about that.
They lined us up in front of a hundred yards of prime rib.
All of us, you know, lined up lookin' at it.
Magnificent meat. Really! Beautifully marbled.
Next thing, they're throwing the meat into these big cauldrons--
all of it-- boiling it!
I looked inside, man. It was turning grey.
I couldn't fucking believe that one.
That's when I applied for radioman school, but then they gave me--
What is it?
Charlie?
It's a tiger!
Son of a bitch! It's a tiger, man! It's a tiger!
Battle stations. Lance, up front.
- Get on your 60! - Got it.
- Holy shit! A fuckin' tiger! - Chef, come on!
- Captain, come on! - Let's hop in and go!
Let's go!
You were right. Never get out of the boat.
- Bring that 60 forward! - Why never get out of the boat?
I gotta remember! Never get out of the boat!
Never get out of the boat!
- How many is it? - A fuckin' tiger!
- What? - A tiger?
Yes! I've had it! I've had the whole goddamn fuckin' shit, man!
You can kiss my ass on the county square...
because I'm fuckin' buggin' out.
I didn't come here for this.
I don't fuckin' need it! I don't want it.
I didn't get out the goddamn eighth grade for this kind of shit!
All I wanted to do was fuckin' cook!
I just wanted to learn to fuckin' cook, man!
- You're all right. - What happened, bro?
You're all right. You're gonna be all right.
All right? It's gonna be all right?
Never get out of the fuckin' boat.
Hi, tiger! Bye, tiger! Goodbye!
Never get out of the boat.
Absolutely goddamn right...
unless you were going all the way.
Kurtz got off the boat.
He split from the whole fuckin' programme.
How did that happen?
What did he see here that first tour?
Thirty-eight fucking years old.
If you joined the Green Berets...
there was no way you'd ever get above colonel.
Kurtz knew what he was giving up.
The more I read and began to understand...
the more I admired him.
His family and friends couldn't understand it...
and they couldn't talk him out of it.
He had to apply three times, and he put up with a ton of shit.
But when he threatened to resign, they gave it to him.
The next youngest guy in his class was half his age.
They must have thought he was some far-out old man...
humping it over that course.
I did it when I was 19. It damn near wasted me.
A tough motherfucker.
He finished it.
He could have gone for general...
but he went for himself instead.

As I recall, Phoebe Bailey wrote in a letter to me to “never forget that dance where we met because I never will.” That is quite humorous, really more humorous than I can articulate, if it represents me landing on Saturn’s moon, Phoebe. I have these moments where I want to scream because there is something locked in my mind that I can’t articulate. I was thinking something similar about the ‘darkness’ surrounding my spacecraft as I was billion miles away. There is truly a “great lakes” of emotion stored in my mind associated with so much that is forgotten. I feel this great humor in my mind about that comment from Phoebe, I feel that if I remember, I will laugh and laugh and laugh, for days on end probably.

Kerry's Shoulder.

In recent hours I was thinking again that something is familiar. Something familiar as in a 'word'. But I don't know. And so that uncertainty makes me think that the uncertainty is the result of last nights sleeping dream. But that doesn't seem right either. What I am more certain of is that feeling is more closely associated with a new broadcast of a television series episode I have documented that I am tracking but that could not be it because there has been no new television series broadcast I watch her in Washington State in recent days and the next new television series broadcast I anticipate will not be for about another month when "Under The Dome" picks up again. SO THERE YOU GO! They are back at it again! I have seen them already! I have heard them already! They are altering my environment!

We;ll, I sorta forgot why I started off to make this note. Still not really sure why. I almost kinda wish my "Animal House" neighbors would kick it up again although I am much too old to now be that kind of neighbor. Anyway, there was some reason I started this note. I have been working on this series of notes thinking about how I hope to finish a complete series of notes about "Apocalypse Now" but I really don't know. And there is still goddamn some notion non-contiguous to the paragraph format of this note I just cannot recall.

Well, I don't know. There was something that started me to make this note before I start to watch "Apocalypse Now." I had not watched "Troy" since the summer of 2004 and the dramatic ending was familiar and there just seems to be something else I wanted to include in this note but that has now left my mind.

"The second you don't respect this, it kills you."

I have not had any similar aches and pains as this problem with my shoulder, which still lingers slightly, in a long time. The funny part about this is that in the days leading up to this observation, over the span of several hours during two days, as best I recall, I was experiencing an extensive line of thought about Kerry Burgess having returned. The real Kerry Burgess and not me pretending and lying about being Kerry Burgess and lying because I do not have any alternative except to maintain this identity and who can prove anyway that I am not Kerry Burgess?

The extensive line of thought was that Kerry Burgess suddenly appeared in my living room and he was almost in a state of shock because, for him, the Stargazer aircraft had just made contact with the ground after spiraling down to the Earth from forty thousand feet above and then being vaporized by the sudden impact. I walked over to him and explained that he was all right and he called me "Tom" but he wasn't sure because I look a lot different now and I explained that I am not Tom and that I am supposed to be him, Kerry Burgess, and I have the memory of Kerry Burgess, until 1990, but I have specific knowledge of Tom Reagan, and so I am neither. I am someone completely different. We discussed how I am one of the undercover identities that was created for Kerry Burgess and that he helped design.

The real Kerry then wanted to know where Tom was and I explained that I think Tom does not exist right now, similar to how you did not exist in this world until a few minutes ago and that this is the year 2010 and you have not existed in this world since the year 1994. I also explained that Tom Reagan emerged from the 27 June 1994 crash almost immediately after the crash but then Tom died again in 1998. Instead of the real Tom Reagan emerging again in 1998, this person I am now emerged and I went to work in this identity.

I was also thinking about where Tom Reagan went in 1998 and he did emerge but he is very far away and has been there by himself all this time and he is on his way back. Unlike the real Kerry Burgess that emerged after 16 years, Tom Reagan has aged naturally and he looks normal as he would have for someone who has aged 16 years. Kerry Burgess emerged at the same age as he was in 1994.

So the funny part is that, during all that thinking, sometime, I am pretty certain was on 30 October 2010, Kerry Burgess was standing in my living room and he wanted to know why I had the matches laid out on my keyboard.

You know what's confusing me? I thought about this for a couple minutes and my confusion must be from hallucinations. I would have sworn I wrote in my journal about the night I put the medals in her purse without her seeing me do it. Maybe I did write about it and now I can't find it again. I don't know. I can still visualize it. I think I am visualizing a series of thoughts from a few years ago, back in the year 2011. I keep seeing myself in Columbia in the year 1997 and I was recently promoted to lieutenant colonel and I was wearing the uniform of the United States Marine Corps and I still can visualize that line of thought of the last words I said to her when I put on my cover as I walked to the door and left and I went to Fort Jackson and I never came back.

Red Storm Rising

13. – The Strangers Arrive and Depart

AACHEN, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

"Siegfried Baum" awoke six hours later to see three men wearing surgical garb. The effect of the anesthesia still heavy on him, his eyes could not focus properly.

"How are you feeling?" one asked. In Russian.

"What happened to me?" The major answered in Russian.

Ach so. "You were struck by a car and you are now in a military hospital," the man lied. They were still in Aachen, near the German-Belgian frontier.

"What . . . I was just coming out to-" The major's voice was that of a drunken man, but it stopped abruptly. His eyes tried to focus properly.

"It is all finished for you, my friend." Now the speaker switched to German. "We know you are a Soviet officer, and you were found in possession of classified government documents. Tell me, what is your interest in Lammersdorf?"

"I have nothing to say," replied "Baum" in German.

"A little late for that," the interrogator chided, switching back to Russian. "But we'll make it easy for you. The surgeon tells us that it is now safe to try a new, ah, medication for you, and you will tell us everything you know. Be serious. No one can resist this form of questioning. You might also wish to consider your position," the man said more harshly. "You are an officer in the army of a foreign government, here in the Federal Republic illegally, traveling with false papers, and in possession of secret documents. At the least, we can imprison you for life. But, given what your government is doing at the moment, we are not concerned with 'least' measures. If you cooperate you will live, and probably be exchanged back to the Soviet Union at a later date for a German agent. We will even say that we got all our information due to the use of drugs; no harm could possibly come to you from this. If you do not cooperate, you will die of injuries received in a motor accident."

"I have a family," Major Andre Chernyavin said quietly, trying to remember his duty. The combination of fear and drug-induced haze made a hash of his emotions. He couldn't tell there was a vial of sodium pentothol dripping into his IV line, and already impairing his higher brain functions. Soon he would be unable to consider the long-term consequences of his action. Only the here and now would matter.

"They will come to no harm," Colonel Weber promised. An Army officer assigned to the Bundesnachrichtendienst, he had interrogated many Soviet agents. "Do you think they punish the family of every spy we catch? Soon no one would ever come here to spy on us at all." Weber allowed his voice to soften. The drugs were beginning to take effect, and as the stranger's mind became hazy he would be gentle, cajoling the information from him. The funny part, he mused, was that he'd been instructed on how to do this by a psychiatrist. Despite the many movies about brutal German interrogators, he hadn't had the least training in a forceful extraction of information. Too bad, he thought. If there was ever a time I need it, it is now.

Yates guilty of 2 more murders; now he may face death penalty

By ELAINE PORTERFIELD, SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Published 10:00 pm, Thursday, September 19, 2002

TACOMA -- Robert Yates Jr. must now fight for his own life.

A Pierce County jury yesterday found Yates -- already one of the state's most prolific serial killers -- guilty of aggravated murder in the deaths of two more women.

On Tuesday, the jury will begin hearing evidence on whether Yates, who is already serving 408 years in prison for killing 13 people, should die for murdering two others, Melinda Mercer and Connie LaFontaine Ellis.

Jurors deliberated for about 5 1/2 hours Wednesday and about two hours yesterday. Finally, after taking an early lunch, they announced that they had reached a verdict.

The jury found there were three aggravating factors in each death that escalated the killings from premeditated first-degree murder to aggravated murder: They said Yates robbed the women; he killed them as part of a common scheme or plan; and he killed them to cover up another crime.

Aggravated murder is the only crime in the state for which prosecutors can seek the death penalty.

Prosecutors say Yates murdered the woman because he loved to kill and enjoyed having sex with their corpses.

Princess Diana Visits Bosnia To Campaign Against Land Mines

By Aida Cerkez

AP

GRACANICA, Bosnia-Herzegovina - Princess Diana lent a sympathetic ear yesterday to mothers of children killed or maimed by land mines.

In the second day of her visit to Bosnia in a campaign to ban land mines, Diana traveled from village to village in north-central Bosnia, visiting with land-mine victims and their families along her route.

In Gracanica, 60 miles north of Sarajevo, the family of 29-year-old off-duty Bosnian army soldier Nedim Brkic, who was killed by a mine in May, awaited her visit.

"I am honored with the visit of the princess," said Brkic's mother, Fatima, while she waited for Diana with her son's widow, Persija. "It means somebody is thinking about us, the little people."

Bosnians see victims excavated from mass grave

By AIDA CERKEZ, Associated Press

Updated 4:54 pm, Wednesday, April 16, 2014

SEJKOVACA, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) —

So far, 430 victims have been found in the Tomasica grave, a vast pit 10 meters (about 30 feet) deep and covering 5,000 square meters (54,000 square feet). The mass grave contains victims of Bosnian Serb military units who killed Muslim Bosniaks and Roman Catholic Croats in hopes of creating an ethnically pure region.

Many believe more people were originally buried there. Diaries confiscated from former Bosnian Serb Gen. Ratko Mladic suggest that some of the bodies in the Tomasica pit were dug up and moved, which now complicates efforts to identify the dead.

One history of Lee Sung Ki reports that Kim Il Sung attended the opening ceremony, and Lee also became director of the Institute for Chemistry at the Hamhung branch of the Academy of Science. Taking only about two years to complete its construction (from about 1959 through 1961), the manufacturing capacity of the February 8 Vinalon Complex was said to be 20,000 tons per year. The name and date of the complex is interesting for more than one reason. Kim Il Sung is said to have established the North Korean Provisional People's Committee (NKPPC) on February 8, 1946.

Kerry not taking reporters’ questions

Washington Post

John Kerry continues to be elusive to the media contingent traveling with him on his charter jet. Not that anyone is focused on this much, but regular reporters on the plane say that the Democratic presidential nominee has not had a formal news conference since Aug. 9. On Aug. 2, he took two questions from the media in Grand Rapids. On Aug. 14, during a flight from Portland to Idaho, he came back to chat about windsurfing.

U.S., Russian Spacecraft Go Separate Ways : Docking: Shuttle Atlantis ends historic 5-day linkup with space station. It leaves with three crewmen who have been in orbit since mid-March.

July 05, 1995 from Associated Press

HOUSTON — Astronauts and cosmonauts watched their ships part and fade into the blackness of space Tuesday in an orbital pirouette that ended five days of flying as a single craft.

"We're just shaking our heads at how quickly this has all gone by," said Charles Precourt, pilot of the U.S. space shuttle Atlantis. "It's as if it were a dream, that we didn't really live it, it happened so fast. . . . But what a great time, what a great effort."

For half an hour, three craft hovered a few hundred feet from one another while hurtling around Earth at 5 miles a second: The Russian Soyuz capsule with two cosmonauts, Atlantis with eight passengers, and the temporarily unmanned Russian space station Mir.

Both crews recorded the historic moment on video and film, but the sun's glare spoiled many of the pictures.

"It's been an inspiring visit with our neighbors in space. We look forward to returning," said NASA's Mission Control.

"We agree with that. . . . We agree 100%," Atlantis' commander, Robert L. (Hoot) Gibson, replied as he backed the shuttle away from the station. "In one of the simulations, the words 'cosmic ballet' came to mind, and I guess that's where we are now."

For nearly 1 1/2 hours, Atlantis flew around Mir for picture-taking, then fired its thrusters 245 miles above South America to move into its own track.

"Bye-bye," Solovyev said softly.

Atlantis launched with seven occupants and is scheduled to land Friday at Florida's Kennedy Space Center

Apollo–Soyuz Test Project

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), conducted in July 1975, was the first joint U.S.–Soviet space flight, and the last flight of an Apollo spacecraft.

Docking

First docking: July 17, 1975 - 16:19:09 UTC

Last undocking: July 19, 1975 - 15:26:12 UTC

Launch and mission

The Soyuz and Apollo flights launched within seven-and-a-half hours of each other on July 15, and docked on July 17. Three hours later, the two mission commanders, Stafford and Leonov, exchanged the first international handshake in space through the open hatch of the Soyuz. NASA had calculated that the historic handshake would have taken place over the British seaside resort of Bognor Regis, but a delay resulted in its occurrence being over the town of Metz in France. During the first crew exchange, the crews were read a statement from Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev, and received a phone call from U.S. President Gerald Ford.

While the two ships were docked, the three Americans and two Soviets conducted joint scientific experiments, exchanged flags and gifts (including tree seeds which were later planted in the two countries), signed certificates, visited each other's ships, ate together, and conversed in each other's languages. (Because of Stafford's pronounced drawl when speaking Russian, Leonov later joked that there were three languages spoken on the mission: Russian, English, and "Oklahomski.") There were also docking and redocking maneuvers, during which the two spacecraft reversed roles and the Soyuz became the "active" ship.

After 44 hours together, the two ships separated

SP-4209 The Partnership: A History of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project

18 July - Transfers

Before finishing all the items on their pre-sleep checklist, the Americans paused to listen to the news and sports as read by CapCom Truly. Included in his report was mention of an American home exhibit that had just opened to enthusiastic crowds in Moscow. Called "Technology in the American Home," the display was designed to give Soviet citizens an idea of the gadgetry available to the American homemaker. While no one commented on the fact, it was just such an exhibit that had sparked the Nixon-Khrushchev debate in 1959. In 16 years' time, the international scene seemed to have changed dramatically.

Although the crew signed off for the evening on schedule at 7:20, they spent an uneasy first few hours. In addition to being very tired from the activities of their fourth day in space, they were jangled awake an hour later by a master alarm that reported a reduction in docking module oxygen pressure. This problem was no real hazard, and it was quickly solved by an increased flow of oxygen into the DM, but it kept the crew from getting all the sleep for which they had been scheduled. When wake-up time came at 3:13 on the morning of the 19th, the crew failed to hear the musical strains of "Tenderness" as sung by the Soviet female artist Maya Kristalinskaya, with which the ground team had hoped to gently waken them. But 15 minutes later, they were awake and ready to begin their fifth day. Next door, beyond hatches three and four, Leonov and Kubasov were getting prepared, too.

http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/SP-4209/ch11-5.htm

SP-4209 The Partnership: A History of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project

19 July - Exercises

During day five of the flight, the crews concentrated on docking exercises and experiments that involved the two ships in the undocked [340] mode. During the interval between the first undocking and the second docking, the Apollo crew placed its craft between Soyuz and the sun so that the diameter of the service module formed a disk which blocked out the sun. This artificial solar eclipse, as viewed from Soyuz, permitted Leonov and Kubasov to photograph the solar corona. Ground-based observations were conducted simultaneously, so that the Soviet astronomer G. M. Nikolsky could compare views of the solar phenomena with and without the interference of the earth's atmosphere. Skylab had provided a long term look at the corona, and the ASTP data would give scientists an opportunity to compare findings made a year and a half later. This "artificial solar eclipse" (MA-148) experiment would be the last American chance for such information gathering until the Shuttle era.

Another major experiment, "ultraviolet absorption" (MA-059), was an effort to more precisely determine the quantities of atomic oxygen and atomic nitrogen existing at such altitudes as the one in which Apollo and Soyuz were orbiting. Again this information could not readily be obtained from ground-based observations because of the intervening layers of atmosphere. Apollo, flying out of plane around Soyuz, first at 150 meters, then at 500 meters, and finally in plane at 1,000 meters, projected monochromatic laserlike beams of light to retroreflectors mounted on Soyuz. When the beams were reflected back to Apollo, they were received by a spectrometer, which recorded the wavelength of the light. Subsequent analysis of these data would yield information on the quantities of oxygen and nitrogen. Some very precise flying was called for in these experiments.

After being docked for nearly 44 hours, Apollo and Soyuz had parted for the first time at 7:12 a.m. while out of contact with the ground. Slayton advised Bobko after radio contact was re-established that they had undocked without incident and were stationkeeping at a range of 50 meters. Meanwhile, Soyuz had extended the guide ring on its docking system in order to test the Soviet mechanism in the active configuration. Once they completed the solar eclipse experiment, with Slayton at the controls, Apollo moved towards Soyuz for the second docking. As he did, Stafford called out to the ground, "Okay, Houston, Deke's having the same problem with the COAS washout that I had." As Slayton explained it, he could see Soyuz and the target initially when they were against the dark sky, but at "about 100 meters or so, it went against the earth background and zap. Man, I didn't have anything." Although worried that he might run over Soyuz, he pressed on with the docking "by the seat of the pants and I guess I got a little closer than they or the ground anticipated."38 There was too much light flowing into the optical alignment sight for Slayton to get a good view of the docking target. Contact with Soyuz came at 7:33:39, and Leonov advised [341] the Americans that he was beginning to retract his side of the docking assembly.

As viewed via Apollo television, this docking looked as if it had been harder than the first, and the two ships continued to sway after capture had been completed. Slayton, speaking in a debriefing, later said:

The docking was normal, you guys gave me contact as usual and then I gave it thrusting. The only thing that happened then was they seemed to torque off. I was surprised at the angle they banged off there after we had contact.39

Despite this oscillation, the Soyuz system aligned the two craft and a proper retraction was completed. Subsequently, there was some discussion of this docking, and the Soviet docking specialist Syromyatnikov was at first worried that an unnecessary strain might have been placed on the Soyuz gear. Bob White said that analysis of the telemetry data indicated that Slayton had inadvertently fired the roll thrusters for approximately 3 seconds after contact, and that this sideways force caused the craft to oscillate after the docking systems were locked and rigid.

But even with the extra thrusting, the second docking was within the limits of safety established for the docking system. Slayton's docking took place at a forward velocity of 0.18 meter per second versus 0.25 meter per second for Stafford's docking, but the difference lay in the inadvertent thrusting. Momentarily an issue, the extra motion of Slayton's try was not a serious concern after all the data had been evaluated. Even Syromyatnikov had to concede that "the mechanism functioned well under unfavorable conditions." It was a case of things looking worse than they really were. In the end, the incident only demonstrated the reliability and hardiness of the new docking system.40

It was 10:27 when Apollo and Soyuz undocked for the second and final time. This 4-minute exercise was conducted by Leonov, since it was a Soyuz active undocking. Slayton then moved his ship to a stationkeeping distance, about 40 meters away. As he did, Leonov opened the retroreflector covers so that the ultraviolet absorption (UVA) experiment could be performed. A difficult series of maneuvers were called for in this test. As Soyuz continued its circular orbit, Slayton took Apollo out of plane with Soyuz and oriented his craft so that its nose was pointed at the reflector on the side of the other ship. Orbiting sideways in this configuration, Slayton flew Apollo in a small arc from the front of Soyuz to the rear of that ship while the spectrometer gathered the reflected beams. On the 150-meter phase of the experiment, light from a Soyuz port led to a misalignment of the spectrometer, but on the 500-meter pass excellent data were received; on the 1,000-meter pass satisfactory results were also obtained.

After nearly 3 hours of tough flying, Bobko congratulated the crew. "You people flew it fine." Slayton responded:

Okay. Great, Bo. And you can thank ol' Roger Burke, Steve Grega, and Bob Anderson, down there, that everything came off right. 'Cause they sure did all the work to make it go.41

The three men Slayton mentioned had spent hours in the simulators working out the procedures to fly this complicated maneuver. Burke, who had worked with developing flight procedures for years, felt that this was one of the hardest experiments a crew had ever been called on to do, especially since the flight plan for it had continued to evolve until a couple of days before launch.42 Slayton later noted that it had taken all three Apollo crewmen to complete the ultraviolet absorption experiment. "I was doing the flying, Vance was running the computer and we had Tom down in the equipment bay opening and closing doors, turning on sensors and so forth. So, it was a busy time for all of us." He indicated that the maneuvers were difficult because orbital mechanics came into play as they tried to fly around Soyuz. When the Apollo crew changed the velocity of their craft, they also affected its orbit. They would have no difficulties if they had had unlimited fuel resources, but being out of plane and playing orbital mechanics with "a very limited fuel budget . . . made it a great challenge."43 Stafford added [343] that the thruster firings had to be timed because the onboard accelerometers could not measure the changes in velocity.44

Apollo performed a separation maneuver at 1:42 to prevent re-contact with Soyuz, placing the American craft in a 217- by 219-kilometer orbit. With all the joint flight activities completed, the ships were going their separate ways. Soyuz was below and moving ahead of Apollo at a rate of 6 to 8 kilometers per orbit. Leonov and Kubasov prepared to go to sleep, but the American crew had several hours of work scheduled in their crowded flight plan after their mid-afternoon meal before they could settle down for a rest period. The fifth day of ASTP - the second of joint activities - had been a success, and everyone in the Moscow and Houston control centers was pleased that all had gone so well.
