How Far Away is Neptune?

By Nola Taylor Tillman published December 14, 2012

The ice giant Neptune is the eighth and most distant planet from the sun. Since its discovery, only one Neptunian year has passed.

How far is Neptune from Earth?

The distance from one planet to another is constantly shifting because both bodies are moving through space. When Neptune and Earth line up on the same side of the sun, at their closest, they are only 2.7 billion miles (4.3 billon kilometers) apart. But when the planets are on opposite sides of the sun, they can put as many as 2.9 billion miles (4.7 billion km) between them.

I watched last night on Comcast On Demand the 2 episodes of the pilot episode of "Caprica." I found it an excellent storyline. I have wondered several times what was the plan with that title. I was trying to remember what I have heard about it on television. I might have heard it was going to be a new series. Then I seemed to have started thinking it was only going to be presented on DVD and I guess that could be true. I was thinking about that again because the title was "Pilot" which makes me wonder if it will be a new television series.

When America First Met the Microchip

At the time, few knew it would change the world.

JUNE 18, 2009

The following article is adapted from Chapter 10 of Fred Kaplan’s new book, 1959: The Year Everything Changed. To learn how he came to write about that year, see “ 1959: I swear, it really is the year everything changed.”

On March 24, 1959, at the Institute of Radio Engineers’ annual trade show in the New York Coliseum, Texas Instruments, one of the nation’s leading electronics firms, introduced a new device that would change the world as profoundly as any invention of the 20th century—the solid integrated circuit, or, as it came to be called, the microchip.

Without the chip, the commonplace conveniences of modern life—personal computers, the Internet, anything involving digital technology and displays, even something as simple as the handheld calculator—would be the stuff of science fiction.

Joseph, this is Zoe, my daughter.

My gods.

Boo.

Frak! What the hell is this? What kind of sick, twisted thing are you doing here?

There's nothing twisted about it. And I didn't do it. Zoe did.

Zoe did?

Turns out she was kind of a chip off the old block.

That's not her. Our daughters, they're gone.

Yes.

You know this.

Yes, but what if they could come back?

You're insane.

Do you know what your brain is, Joseph? It's a database and a processor, that's all. Information and a way to use it. And what my daughter figured out was Was how to harness all the information that made her who and what she was. It's genius, really. She took a search engine and turned it into a way to cheat death.

No, it's it's an illusion. You said so yourself.
