Goddamnit these places creep me out. It is like having to live with zombies. If I listen closely, I'll probably hear them all mumbling quietly over and over, "brains...brains...brains..."

Cornelius: What are you doing?
George Taylor, NASA astronaut, stranded: Reconstructing a past life.
These things were found at the same level as that doll?
Whoever owned them must have been in pretty bad shape. He wore false teeth. And eyeglasses. He had a failing heart. Towards the end, he had this prefabricated valve put in it. I don't say he was a man like I knew at home, but he must have been a close relative. He had all the same weaknesses. He was a weak, fragile animal. But he was here before you and he was better than you are.
That's lunacy. I can offer alternate descriptions of every one of those articles

Clinton Team Picks Apart Jones's Life
By Peter Baker and Lorraine Adams
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, February 23, 1998; Page A01
The 11th-floor New York Avenue law offices with a strategic view of Washington's majestic landmarks are a fair distance from the one-stoplight town of Lonoke, Ark. But these days there is little about Lonoke's most famous native daughter that is not known in the polished suites of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.
Piece by piece, President Clinton's top-dollar legal team has taken apart the life of Paula Jones, examining topics from her job history to her possible sex partners. They turned up a check she bounced when reimbursing the Arkansas government for personal calls made on state phones. They found previous employers who fired her for tardiness or other reasons. They scoured personnel records and discovered she typed only 24 words per minute and scored 121 out of 174 on an Arkansas state clerical examination.
Venturing into more salacious territory, they interviewed as many as a half-dozen men who claimed to have had sex with her, including some who said they met her casually at parties or bars and then engaged in quick encounters, according to people close to the case. One former boss signed an affidavit alleging that she pursued him at work and that they slept together. After their short-lived relationship ended, he fired her -- in part, he said, because she dressed too provocatively.
Now that the lawyers essentially have finished gathering evidence and made the final pretrial effort to get Jones's sexual harassment lawsuit thrown out, a picture has emerged of who the president's defense team is and where it is headed. Led by veterans of past high-profile political cases, the Clinton legal squad is following an aggressive and political risky strategy centered on Jones herself. After all the attention focused on a president linked by fact or rumor to a host of women -- most recently and most perilously Monica S. Lewinsky -- Clinton's lawyers hope to turn the spotlight with blinding intensity on the life of his most persistent accuser.
"Does her story make sense? It's always been our position to point out why it doesn't make sense," said Mitchell S. Ettinger, a Clinton attorney. "No one's going to argue they weren't in a room together. And you don't have to call her a complete liar. But everything she's said -- about her injuries to her job, her reactions to this, her reasons for filing suit -- it's not going to add up."

2023 Israel–Hamas war
From Wikipedia
An armed conflict between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian militant groups has been taking place chiefly in and around the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023, with clashes also taking place in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and on the Israel–Lebanon border. On that day, militant groups launched a surprise attack on southern Israel from the Gaza Strip.
The war began when Hamas-led Palestinian militant groups targeted Israel in an operation they called "Al-Aqsa Flood" with a barrage of rockets, while around 3,000 militants breached the Gaza–Israel barrier and attacked neighboring Israeli communities and military bases; 1,139 people - 695 Israeli and 71 foreign civilians along with 373 soldiers and police officers - were killed.
around 6:30 a.m. IDT (UTC+3) on 7 October 2023, Hamas announced the start of what it called "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood", stating it had fired over 5,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel within a span of 20 minutes. Israeli sources reported that at least 3,000 projectiles had been launched from Gaza. At least five people were killed by the rocket attacks. Explosions were reported in areas surrounding the strip and in cities in the Sharon Plain including Gedera, Herzliyya, Tel Aviv, and Ashkelon. Air raid sirens were activated in Beer Sheva, Jerusalem, Rehovot, Rishon Lezion, and Palmachim Airbase. Hamas issued a call to arms, with commander Mohammad Deif calling on "Muslims everywhere to launch an attack" and to "kill them [the enemy] wherever you may find them".
In Be'eri, Hamas militants took up to 50 people hostage. Videos showed hostages being led barefoot across a street in the town. Hamas also massacred at least 325 and injured many more at an outdoor music festival near Re'im and took at least 37 attendees hostage.

D.J.: There - I think that says "ex inferis." "Save yourself... from Hell." Look, if what Doctor Weir tells us is true, this ship has been beyond the boundaries of our universe, of known scientific reality. Who knows where it's been, what it's seen... or what it's brought back with it?
Miller: From Hell? You don't believe in that kind of stuff, do you?
D.J.: Whoever sent that message, he sure believed in Hell.

Ethology
From Wikipedia
Ethology is a branch of zoology that studies the behaviour of non-human animals, usually with a scientific focus on behaviour under natural conditions, and viewing behaviour as an evolutionarily adaptive trait. Behaviourism is the scientific and objective study of animal behaviour, usually via measured responses to stimuli or to trained behavioural responses in a laboratory context, without a particular emphasis on evolutionary adaptivity.
Understanding ethology can be important in animal training. Trainers can choose individuals most suitable to carry out a necessary duty by taking into account the inherent habits of various types or breeds. Additionally, it gives trainers the ability to promote the execution of behaviours that come easily and the cessation of undesired ones.

George Taylor: And that completes my final report until we reach touchdown. We're now on full automatic, in the hands of the computers. I have tucked my crew in for the long sleep and I'll be joining them soon. In less than an hour, we'll finish our sixth month out of Cape Kennedy. Six months in deep space - by our time, that is. According to Dr. Haslein's theory of time, in a vehicle travelling nearly the speed of light, the Earth has aged nearly 700 years since we left it, while we've aged hardly at all. Maybe so. This much is probably true - the men who sent us on this journey are long since dead and gone. You who are reading me now are a different breed - I hope a better one. I leave the 20th century with no regrets. But one more thing - if anybody's listening, that is. Nothing scientific. It's purely personal. But seen from out here everything seems different. Time bends. Space is boundless. It squashes a man's ego. I feel lonely. That's about it. Tell me, though. Does man, that marvel of the universe, that glorious paradox who sent me to the stars, still make war against his brother? Keep his neighbor's children starving?

William and Harry reunite at Diana statue unveiling

London CNN
Princes William and Harry put aside their differences to appear together Thursday to unveil a statue honoring their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace.
The statue – which was originally commissioned in 2017 on the 20th anniversary of her death – was revealed at an afternoon ceremony on what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday.
Her sons put on a united front at Thursday’s event, entering the garden in conversation together before making their way over to greet their aunts and uncle – their mother’s siblings Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lady Jane Fellowes and Earl Spencer. Also in attendance was the statue’s sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, garden designer Pip Morrison as well as members of the statue committee.
The brothers then walked over to statue draped in a green covering before pulling away the cloth to reveal their mother’s image cast in bronze. The pair took a few moments with one of their aunts to admire the new installation before rejoining other guests.

Mother allegedly drowns her 5 kids
HOUSTON - A 36-year-old mother with a history of depression, who once attempted suicide, apparently drowned her five children in a bathtub yesterday morning before calling police, authorities said.
Officers sent to the house were met at the door by the woman, her clothes still damp. Four of the children were found on a bed under a sheet, police said. The fifth - the eldest child, a 7-year-old boy - was in the bathtub. The youngest child was a 6-month-old girl.
The mother, Andrea Yates, was taken into custody at her home in Clear Lake, a Houston suburb near NASA's Johnson Space Center, and later was charged with multiple counts of capital murder.

Commando Order
From Wikipedia
The Commando Order (German: Kommandobefehl) was issued by the OKW, the High Command of the German armed forces, on 18 October 1942 stating that all Allied commandos encountered in Europe and Africa should be killed immediately without trial, even if in proper uniforms or if they attempted to surrender. Any commando or small group of commandos or a similar unit, agents, and saboteurs not in proper uniforms, who fell into the hands of the German forces by some means other than direct combat (through the police in occupied territories, for instance), were to be handed over immediately to the Sicherheitsdienst (SD, Security Service). The order, which was issued in secret, made it clear that failure to carry out these orders by any commander or officer would be considered to be an act of negligence punishable under German military law.
On October 7, Hitler personally penned a note in the Wehrmacht daily communique:
In future, all terror and sabotage troops of the British and their accomplices, who do not act like soldiers but rather like bandits, will be treated as such by the German troops and will be ruthlessly eliminated in battle, wherever they appear.
In effect
On October 18, after much deliberation by High Command lawyers, officers and staff, Hitler issued his Commando Order or Kommandobefehl in secret, with only 12 copies. The following day Army Chief of Staff Alfred Jodl distributed copies with an appendix stating that the order was "intended for commanders only and must not under any circumstances fall into enemy hands". The order itself stated that:
For a long time now our opponents have been employing in their conduct of the war, methods which contravene the International Convention of Geneva. The members of the so-called Commandos behave in a particularly brutal and underhanded manner; and it has been established that those units recruit criminals not only from their own country but even former convicts set free in enemy territories. From captured orders it emerges that they are instructed not only to tie up prisoners, but also to kill out-of-hand unarmed captives who they think might prove an encumbrance to them, or hinder them in successfully carrying out their aims. Orders have indeed been found in which the killing of prisoners has positively been demanded of them.
In this connection it has already been notified in an Appendix to Army Orders of 7.10.1942. that in future, Germany will adopt the same methods against these Sabotage units of the British and their Allies; i.e. that, whenever they appear, they shall be ruthlessly destroyed by the German troops.
I order, therefore: From now on all men operating against German troops in so-called Commando raids in Europe or in Africa, are to be annihilated to the last man. This is to be carried out whether they be soldiers in uniform, or saboteurs, with or without arms; and whether fighting or seeking to escape; and it is equally immaterial whether they come into action from Ships and Aircraft, or whether they land by parachute. Even if these individuals on discovery make obvious their intention of giving themselves up as prisoners, no pardon is on any account to be given. On this matter a report is to be made on each case to Headquarters for the information of Higher Command.
Should individual members of these Commandos, such as agents, saboteurs etc., fall into the hands of the Armed Forces through any means as, for example, through the Police in one of the Occupied Territories they are to be instantly handed over to the SD
To hold them in military custody for example in P.O.W. Camps, etc., even if only as a temporary measure, is strictly forbidden.
This order does not apply to the treatment of those enemy soldiers who are taken prisoner or give themselves up in open battle, in the course of normal operations, large-scale attacks; or in major assault landings or airborne operations. Neither does it apply to those who fall into our hands after a sea fight, nor to those enemy soldiers who, after air battle, seek to save their lives by parachute.
I will hold all Commanders and Officers responsible under Military Law for any omission to carry out this order, whether by failure in their duty to instruct their units accordingly, or if they themselves act contrary to it.

exceerpts, Chapter 3 - Correlation of Forces
MOSCOW, R.S.F.S.R.
"How are we to go about it?" Rozhkov asked.
"Red Storm," the Marshal replied simply. Red Storm was the plan for a mechanized attack into West Germany and the Low Countries. Constantly updated for changes in the force structures of both sides, it called for a two-to three-week campaign commencing after a rapid escalation of tension between East and West. Despite this, in accordance with standard Soviet strategic doctrine, it called for strategic surprise as a precondition for success, and the use of conventional weapons only.
"At least they aren't talking about atomic arms." Rozhkov grunted. Other plans with other names applied to different scenarios, including many for the use of tactical and even strategic nuclear arms, something no one in uniform wished to contemplate. Despite all the saber-rattling of their political masters, these professional soldiers knew all too well that the use of nuclear arms made only for ghastly uncertainties. "And the maskirovka?"
"In two parts. The first is purely political, to work against the United States. The second part, immediately before the war begins, is from KGB. You know it, from KGB Group Nord. We reviewed it two years ago."
Rozhkov grunted. Group Nord was an ad hoc committee of KGB department chiefs, first assembled by then-chief of the KGB Yuri Andropov in the mid-1970s. Its purpose was to research means of splitting the NATO alliance, and in general to conduct political and psychological operations aimed at undermining Western will. Its specific plan to shake the NATO military and political structure in preparation for a shooting war was Nord's proudest example of legerdemain. But would it work?
The two senior officers shared an ironic look. Like most professional soldiers, they distrusted spies and all their plans.

Alex and Michael
I woke up this morning and I guess I had just then been dreaming about a story I was writing about those two. I was feeling as though the details were something I had been thinking of before I awoke. I awoke thinking about how if there were ever in this world two little kids that needed firearms then those are the two. I thought about how little Alex had an Uzi and he opened up on Susan Smith with that Uzi and he ripped a full clip at her and that stupid kid only hit the cat nearby on the floor which exploded into a big splatter of blood and hair over the wall and he got Susan in the foot with one bullet from that full magazine but that isn't surprising because 15-month-old kids can't aim firearms very well and Michael was banging away at her with a pair of Colt .45 semiautomatic pistols and he emptied both clips and only got her in the leg one time. So I don't know what I was dreaming of. Maybe that was something from part of something I wrote a long time ago after I found those kids in the lake.

A Woman's False Accusation Pains Many Blacks
By Don Terry
November 6, 1994, Section 1, Page 32
As racial hoaxes go, the lies Susan Smith told in Union, S.C., about a black man stealing her two children were not novel or new, but they shot around the world anyway as the gospel truth spoken by a grieving mother.
Now, with the news that Mrs. Smith has confessed to killing her own offspring comes a different kind of grief -- a weary, when-will-it-ever-end sadness.
"I guess she figured if she said a black man did it people would believe her no matter what kind of story she came up with," said Tyrone Mason, a 38-year-old tennis coach in Chicago. "That's what hurts. As long as it's allegedly a black man involved, America will fall for anything."
In nearly two dozen interviews from Boston to Los Angeles, on street corners in Union and Harlem and in ivory towers in Evanston, Ill., black people, especially black men, bemoaned what many said the small town saga represented beyond the murder of innocents: another assault on the souls and honor of black folk.
"It just goes to show that racism is alive and well and free in America," said Inez Chappell, a 67-year-old retired manicurist in Baltimore who grew up on stories of the Scottsboro Boys, the 1930's case of nine black teen-agers falsely accused of raping two white women.
On a street corner in Harlem, not far from where countless rallies for the Scottsboro Boys were held, Michael Major, a 29-year-old security guard, said it made him sad that desperate people think blaming blacks will solve their problems.
"It's kind of upsetting after a while," he said, "and it gets to be very stressful."
Experts say the lies the 23-year-old mother told to cover her trail fit a long history of scapegoating black men for the ills of the nation.
"This case demonstrates once again the stereotypical view of black men in America, that they are other, that they are dangerous, that they should be imprisoned," said Aldon Morris, who is black and the head of the sociology department at Northwestern University.
"And this view, of course, is nothing new," he said. "It was the same view that guided lynch mobs during the days of segregation in the South. It is the same view that causes black men to be stopped, searched and harassed on a routine basis by the police."
But the voices bemoaning the power of racial lies do not belong only to blacks.
During a shopping trip to Atlanta on Friday, the day Mrs. Smith was charged with murdering her two sons, Louise Taylor, a white school psychologist from Mount Pleasant, S.C., said Mrs. Smith had chosen the right-colored monster to generate the most sympathy and fear for her plight, especially in the hearts of whites.
"It did make her story seem more likely," Ms. Taylor said. "I wouldn't like to think we're all prejudiced, but I guess there's that typical profile of the old bad black guy. We're just too ready to accept that."
In recent years, there has been a string of high-profile crimes like the one in Union.

excerpts, Chapter 13. – The Strangers Arrive and Depart
AACHEN, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY
"Siegfried Baum" awoke six hours later to see three men wearing surgical garb. The effect of the anesthesia still heavy on him, his eyes could not focus properly.
"How are you feeling?" one asked. In Russian.
"What happened to me?" The major answered in Russian.
Ach so. "You were struck by a car and you are now in a military hospital," the man lied. They were still in Aachen, near the German-Belgian frontier.
"What . . . I was just coming out to-" The major's voice was that of a drunken man, but it stopped abruptly. His eyes tried to focus properly.
"It is all finished for you, my friend." Now the speaker switched to German. "We know you are a Soviet officer, and you were found in possession of classified government documents. Tell me, what is your interest in Lammersdorf?"
"I have nothing to say," replied "Baum" in German.
"A little late for that," the interrogator chided, switching back to Russian. "But we'll make it easy for you. The surgeon tells us that it is now safe to try a new, ah, medication for you, and you will tell us everything you know. Be serious. No one can resist this form of questioning. You might also wish to consider your position," the man said more harshly. "You are an officer in the army of a foreign government, here in the Federal Republic illegally, traveling with false papers, and in possession of secret documents. At the least, we can imprison you for life. But, given what your government is doing at the moment, we are not concerned with 'least' measures. If you cooperate you will live, and probably be exchanged back to the Soviet Union at a later date for a German agent. We will even say that we got all our information due to the use of drugs; no harm could possibly come to you from this. If you do not cooperate, you will die of injuries received in a motor accident."
"I have a family," Major Andre Chernyavin said quietly, trying to remember his duty. The combination of fear and drug-induced haze made a hash of his emotions. He couldn't tell there was a vial of sodium pentothol dripping into his IV line, and already impairing his higher brain functions. Soon he would be unable to consider the long-term consequences of his action. Only the here and now would matter.
"They will come to no harm," Colonel Weber promised. An Army officer assigned to the Bundesnachrichtendienst, he had interrogated many Soviet agents. "Do you think they punish the family of every spy we catch? Soon no one would ever come here to spy on us at all." Weber allowed his voice to soften. The drugs were beginning to take effect, and as the stranger's mind became hazy he would be gentle, cajoling the information from him. The funny part, he mused, was that he'd been instructed on how to do this by a psychiatrist. Despite the many movies about brutal German interrogators, he hadn't had the least training in a forceful extraction of information. Too bad, he thought. If there was ever a time I need it, it is now. Most of the colonel's family lived outside Kulmbach, only a few kilometers from the border.

Tom Clancy's second classic No 1 bestselling thriller -- a chillingly authentic vision of modern war -- now reissued in a new cover. Three Muslim terrorists who destroyed the Soviet Union's largest petrochemical plant thought they were striking a blow for freedom. What they had done, unknowingly, was fire the first shots in World War III. Desperately short of oil, the Kremlin hawks see only one way of solving their problem: seize supplies in the Persian Gulf. To do that, they must first neutralise NATO's forces and eliminate their response -- and so they develop Red Storm, a dazzling master plan of diplomatic subterfuge and intense rearmament.

excerpts, Chapter 13. – The Strangers Arrive and Depart
BONN, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY
"It's all a sham," Weber reported to the Chancellor four hours later. The helicopter he'd flown to Bonn hadn't even left the ground yet. "The whole bomb-plot business is all a cruel and deliberate sham."
"We know that, Colonel," the Chancellor replied testily. He'd been awake for two days straight now, trying to come to grips with the sudden German-Russian crisis.
"Herr Kanzler, the man we now have in the hospital is Major Andre Ilych Chernyavin. He entered the country over the Czech border two weeks ago with a separate set of false papers. He is an officer in the Soviet Spetznaz forces, their elite Sturmtruppen. He was badly injured in an auto accident-the fool stepped right in front of an automobile without looking-and was carrying a complete diagram for the NATO communications base at Lammersdorf. The station's security posts were just relocated a month ago. This document is only two weeks old. He also has the watch schedule and a roster of watch officers-and that is only three days old! He and a team of ten men came over the Czech border, and only just got their operational orders. His current orders are to attack the base exactly at midnight, the day after receipt of his alert signal. There is also a cancellation signal should plans change. We have them both."
"He came into Germany long before-" The Chancellor was surprised in spite of himself. The entire affair was so unreal.
"Exactly. It all fits, Herr Kanzler. For whatever reason, Ivan is coming to attack Germany. Everything to this point was a sham, all designed to put us to sleep. Here is a full transcript of our interview with Chernyavin. He has knowledge of four other Spetznaz operations, all of them consistent with a full-scale assault across our borders. He is now at our military hospital in Koblenz under heavy guard. We also have a videotape of his admission."
"What of the chance that this is all some sort of Russian provocation? Why weren't these documents brought over when they crossed the border?"
"The reconstruction of the Lammersdorf installation meant that they needed correct information. As you know, we've been upgrading the security measures at our NATO communications stations since last summer, and our Russian friends must have been updating their assault plans as well. The fact that they have these documents at all-just days old, some of them-is most frightening. As for how we happened to get hold of this man-" Weber explained the circumstances of the accident. "We have every reason to believe that it was a genuine accident, not a provocation. The driver, a Madame Anne-Marie LeCourte, is a fashion agent -she sells dresses for some Paris designer or other; not a likely cover for a Soviet spy. And why do such a thing? Do they expect us to launch an attack into the DDR based on this? First they accuse us of bombing the Kremlin, then try to provoke us? It's not logical. What we have here is a man whose mission is to prepare the way for a Soviet invasion of Germany by paralyzing NATO communication links immediately before hostilities commence."
"But to do such a thing-even if such an attack is planned.
"The Soviets are intoxicated with 'special operations' groups, a lesson from Afghanistan. These men are highly trained, very dangerous. And it's a cunning plan. The Jewish identification, for example. The bastards play on our sensitivity with the Jews, no? If he is stopped by a police officer, he can make a casual remark about how Germans treat Jews, and what would a young policeman do, eh? Probably apologize and send him on his way." Weber smiled grimly. That had been a carefully thought-out touch. He had to admire it. "What they could not allow for was the unexpected. We've been lucky. We should now make use of this luck. Herr Kanzler, this data must go to NATO high command immediately. For the moment we have their safe house under observation. We may wish to assault it. GSG-9 is ready for the mission, but perhaps it should be a NATO operation."
"I must meet with my cabinet first. Then I will speak with the President of the United States on the telephone and the other NATO chiefs of government."
"Forgive me, Chancellor, but there is no time for that. With your permission, within the hour I will give a copy of the videotape to the CIA liaison officer, and also to the British and French. The Russians are going to attack us. Better to alert the intelligence services first, which will lay the groundwork for your talk with the President and others. We must move at once, Herr Kanzler. This is a life-and-death situation."
The Chancellor stared down at his desk. "Agreed, Colonel. What do you propose to do with this Chernyavin?"
Weber had already moved on that score. "He died of injuries sustained in the auto accident. It will appear on the television news this evening, and in the newspapers. Of course he will be made available to our allies for further interrogation. I am certain the CIA and others will wish to see him before midnight."
The Chancellor of the German Federal Republic stared out the windows of his Bonn office. He remembered his armed service forty years before: a frightened teenager with a helmet that nearly covered his eyes. "It's happening again." How many will die this time?
"Ja." Dear God, what will it be like?

It's pure bunk, of course
Humbug, too, I'm certain
Cowards are terrified of mortality
That's why the superstition of the Jesus Christ mythology is so popular among you dim-wits. Your ridiculous notion of a human "spirit" is the ultimate expression of your cowardice. You're desperate to believe that you have an imaginary friend up there in the clouds
And the US government protects superstition. Because you're too cowardly to accept mortality and accept reality and the US government protects your ridiculous superstition
So why would the superstition of the Navajo have any less status than the superstition of the Jesus Christ bible-thumpers, mostly hypocrites such as Joe Biden
NASA now without a doubt to me knows that I know they know I know they know
So this isn't a great surprise that someone at NASA - with present ability - caused this
These details could not have become revealed by the person I was in the 1990s. Only I - the replicant - have no obligation to protect secrets that I never sworn any oath to protect and that no one revealed to me personally
I have no duty

First U.S. lunar lander in more than 50 years rockets toward moon with commercial deliveries
The Vulcan streaked through the Florida predawn sky and should attempt a moon landing on Feb. 23.

By The Associated Press
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The first U.S. lunar lander in more than 50 years rocketed toward the moon Monday, launching private companies on a space race to make deliveries for NASA and other customers.
Astrobotic Technology’s lander caught a ride on a brand new rocket, United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan. The Vulcan streaked through the Florida predawn sky, putting the spacecraft on a roundabout route to the moon that should culminate with an attempted landing on Feb. 23.
The Pittsburgh company aims to be the first private business to successfully land on the moon, something only four countries have accomplished. But a Houston company also has a lander ready to fly, and could beat it to the lunar surface, taking a more direct path.
“First to launch. First to land is TBD,” to be determined, said Astrobotic chief executive John Thornton.
NASA gave the two companies millions to build and fly their own lunar landers. The space agency wants the privately owned landers to scope out the place before astronauts arrive while delivering NASA tech and science experiments as well as odds and ends for other customers. Astrobotic’s contract for the Peregrine lander: $108 million.
The last time the U.S. launched a moon-landing mission was in December 1972. Apollo 17’s Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt became the 11th and 12th men to walk on the moon, closing out an era that has remained NASA’s pinnacle.
The space agency’s new Artemis program — named after the twin sister of Apollo in Greek mythology — looks to return astronauts to the moon’s surface within the next few years. First will be a lunar fly-around with four astronauts, possibly before the end of the year.
Highlighting Monday’s moonshot was the long-delayed initial test flight of the Vulcan rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The 202-foot (61-meter) rocket is essentially an upgraded version of ULA’s hugely successful workhorse Atlas V, which is being phased out along with the company’s Delta IV. Jeff Bezos’ rocket company, Blue Origin, provided the Vulcan’s two main engines.
The mission, called Cert-1, will also carry on board the cremated remains of several people associated with the original "Star Trek" series, including creator Gene Roddenberry and cast member Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed the character Uhura.
The Soviet Union and the U.S. racked up a string of successful moon landings in the 1960s and 70s, before putting touchdowns on pause. China joined the elite club in 2013 and India in 2023. But last year also saw landers from Russia and a private Japanese company slam into the moon. An Israeli nonprofit crashed in 2019.
Next month, SpaceX will provide the lift for a lander from Intuitive Machines. The Nova-C lander’s more direct one-week route could see both spacecraft attempting to land within days or even hours of one another.
The hourlong descent to the lunar surface — by far the biggest challenge — will be “exciting, nail-biting, terrifying all at once,” said Thornton.
Besides flying experiments for NASA, Astrobotic drummed up its own freight business, packing the 6-foot-tall (1.9-meter-tall) Peregrine lander with everything from a chip of rock from Mount Everest and toy-size cars from Mexico that will catapult to the lunar surface and cruise around, to the ashes and DNA of deceased space enthusiasts, including “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry and science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke.
The Navajo Nation recently sought to have the launch delayed because of the human remains. saying it would be a “profound desecration” of a celestial body revered by Native Americans. Thornton said the December objections came too late but promised to try to find “a good path forward” with the Navajo for future missions.
One of the spaceflight memorial companies that bought room on the lander, Celestis, said in a statement that no single culture or religion owns the moon and should not be able to veto a mission. More remains are on the rocket’s upper stage, which, once free of the lander, will indefinitely circle the sun as far out as Mars.
Cargo fares for Peregrine ranged from a few hundred dollars to $1.2 million per kilogram (2.2 pounds), not nearly enough for Astrobotic to break even. But for this first flight, that’s not the point, according to Thornton.
“A lot of people’s dreams and hopes are riding on this,” he said.

Navajo Nation demands NASA stop launch bringing human remains to the moon
Timothy Nerozzi
Sat, January 6, 2024 at 8:11 AM PST
The country's largest native tribe is concerned about plans to put human remains on the surface of the moon.
The Navajo Nation voiced outrage at NASA at a press conference on Friday, lamenting plans for the Jan. 8 launch of the Vulcan Centaur to deposit approximately 250 capsules of human ashes on the lunar surface.
"The placement of human remains on the moon is a profound desecration of this celestial body revered by our people," the Navajo President Buu Nygren said on Thursday in a statement addressing the launch.

City, officer battle over 9/11 photos
By DAVID B. CARUSO
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER
NEW YORK -- For more than three months, police Detective John Botte roamed the ruins of the World Trade Center, snapping photographs with his Leica Rangefinder camera and capturing hundreds of images of people at work on the monumental cleanup. His pictures soon appeared in a trio of books, most notably the best-selling autobiography of the city's police commissioner.
But now the city is threatening to sue over the publication of a new volume containing more than 200 pages of the detective's work, claiming the photographs are police department property. City officials say Botte was on duty when he took the photographs and any profits from the images belong to the police department.
"I think the city's position is clear: It was done on government time. It's the property of the government," Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters last week.
That argument is well-known to professional photographers, whose work long has been deemed to belong to the organizations paying their salaries, but Botte said he was stunned by the city's claim.

Strasbourg Agreement Concerning the International Patent Classification
The Strasbourg Agreement establishes the International Patent Classification (IPC) which divides technology into eight sections with approximately 70,000 subdivisions. Classification is indispensable for the retrieval of patent documents in the search for "prior art". Such retrieval is needed by patent-issuing authorities, potential inventors, research and development units and others concerned with the application or development of technology.

I am not certain how long I was asleep before waking up a few hours ago. I might have been asleep for more than 8 hours or I might have just had another long nap as I did a few hours before I fell asleep that last time. I know I was asleep in my clothes both times but I've been asleep for more than 8 hours in clothes so I don't know. Anyway, the dream just before I awoke seemed to be something about Apollo 11. In the dream, I was walking on Neil Armstrong's farm although how I knew it was his farm I do not know and I remember that I was the only person in the dream but there was a sense of someone telling me information in the dream and I could not see that person. As I was just writing that last sentence, the thought occurred to me that I am dreaming of hearing another person communicate to me through the speaker in my spacesuit helmet.

NCIS: Los Angeles
Season 2: Episode 5
Little Angels: The daughter of an Navy Commander is kidnapped from her home in the Angeles National Forest and buried alive. This case visibly strikes a cord with Sam. Even though this is now an FBI case, he insists that Hetty allow them to work the case. The team tracks a car seen leaving the forest to the brother of convicted serial killer, Timon Maragos; whose M.O was burying young girls alive. Alex Maragos acts suspicious and during questioning, Sam catches him lying about his whereabouts the night of the kidnapping. Meanwhile, Deeks talks to Timon in prison where tries to implicate his brother in the previous murders and Ashley's kidnapping. The team doesn't know who to believe and with time running out Callen comes up with a plan to set a trap for both brothers and see which one of them takes the bait and leads them to Ashley. The plan works but when Callen and Sam tackle the suspects they discover that it is not Alex or Timon but Alex's teenage sons. Apparently, they admired their uncle and wanted to see if killing someone felt as good as Timon had described to them.
Hetty tells Callen to keep an eye on Sam, who is taking this case to heart. Sam finally opens up to his partner about the Serbian paramilitary locking him and his team member in a steal locker as they were on a mission to capture Serbian war criminals. Sam's team member died before the SEAL team could find and rescue them. He has always felt guilty about surviving and the circumstances of Ashley's kidnapping brought back memories that have always haunted him.

I guess that I also remember someone telling me to get over it. What is done is done.
I wish it was that easy to forget.

So I don't know. Maybe I haven't been able to go home to my wife for this past decade because I don't actually have a wife anymore to go home to.
01/15/08 9:41 AM
All this time, I just wanted to believe that nothing had gone wrong in our marriage when the reality was disappointingly different.
01/15/08 9:47 AM
Ah. That must have been it. I was thinking was Julia Roberts
I cannot begin to describe how goddamned lousy this makes me feel.
01/15/08 9:49 AM
I don't know why Julia Robert's made me think of that.
01/15/08 9:56 AM
I could find another woman that I wouldn't care if I could trust her or not, but that is no consolation.
01/15/08 10:10 AM
I am going out of my mind in here
I feel as though I have been buried alive

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)
(from internet transcript)
(console bleeps)
SAAVIK: Metallic mass.
DAVID: Close-range scan. ...A photon tube! ...Gravitational fields were in flux. ...It must have soft-landed!
ESTEBAN: In code to Starfleet. 'Captain's Spock's tube located on Genesis surface.'
COMM OFFICER: Yes sir, ...coding your message.
DAVID: I don't believe it.
ESTEBAN: What is it?
SAAVIK: If equipment is functioning properly, indications are ...an animal lifeform.
ESTEBAN: You said there wouldn't be any...
DAVID: There shouldn't be any.
SAAVIK: Cross referenced and verified. An unidentifiable lifeform reading.
COMM OFFICER: Do you wish to advise Starfleet, sir?
ESTEBAN: Wait a minute! ...We don't know what we're talking about here.
DAVID: Why don't we beam it up?
ESTEBAN: Oh no you don't! Regulations specifically state, 'nothing shall be beamed aboard until danger of contamination has been eliminated.'
SAAVIK: Captain, ...the logical alternative is obvious. ...Beaming down to the surface is permitted.
ESTEBAN: Yes, if the Captain decides that the mission is vital and reasonably free of danger.
DAVID: Captain, please, ...we'll take the risk, but we've got to find out what it is.
SAAVIK: Or who.
[Kirk's apartment]
KIRK: Absent friends.
SULU: Admiral, what's going to happen to the Enterprise?
KIRK: She's to be decommissioned.
CHEKOV: Will we get another ship?
KIRK: I can't get an answer. Starfleet is up to its brass in galactic conference. No one has time for those who only stand and wait.
UHURA: Sir? About Doctor McCoy, how is he?
KIRK: He's home, resting comfortably, pumped full of tranquillisers. They say it's exhaustion. He promised me he'd stay put. Well we'll see.
(door chimes)
KIRK: Ah, Mister Scott. ...Come. ...Sarek! ...Ambassador, I had no idea you were here... I believe you know my crew.
SAREK: I will speak with you alone, Kirk.
KIRK: Please excuse us. ...Ambassador, I would have come to Vulcan to express my deepest sympathy.
SAREK: Spare me your human platitudes, Kirk. I have been to your Government. I have seen the Genesis information, and your own report.
KIRK: Then you know how bravely your son met his death.
SAREK: Why did you leave him on Genesis! Spock trusted you. You denied him his future!
KIRK: I saw no future.
SAREK: Only his body was in death, Kirk. And you were the last one to be with him.
KIRK: Yes, I was.
SAREK: Then you must know that you should have come with him to Vulcan.
KIRK: But ...why?

excerpts, by me, Kerry Burgess, 12/01/2023 04:15 AM
As though the Julian Jaynes bicameral gods are telling me - non-verbally - stories that I will discover in the future. That's a contradiction, however, to the concept Julian Jaynes expertly describes in his book. I am extending his concept about what happened to the people of ancient times and adapting to my own personal observations about my own personal experiences and I am suggesting that everyone today is affected by the notion I theorize. Far as I know, Jaynes never tried to suggest that the human species - past and present - have some sort of "back door" vulnerability to foreign influence by extraterrestrial intelligence. And I am not suggesting E.T. is here *now* and is still mind-controlling people to do stuff they would not have done anyway. Rather, I am more inclined to accept the fictional notion established in tangible form under the name James Corey and his "protomolecule". The human species forced into a collective consciousness by an alien race but they created it more than a billion years ago so don't take it personally.

There was another pattern I had thought of before yesterday and my post but then I forgot about it
This other pattern is associated with yesterday and the 11th
So that's what I'm waiting for: the 11th
During the calendar-day 01/11/2024, I will resume with episode 3 of "The Lazarus Project"
Perhaps the final episode of "See"
I paused my research using "For All Mankind" with that post I made after watching the episode where that one astronaut is trapped in the Moon cave and the other astronaut is unconscious. Would have to look up the title
Not sure how many more of those episodes I'm watching for this research
Apple-tv doesn't have a lot of content I'm interested in
Although, seems better than others
But I allow myself only one subscription at a time and there's others I want to check.
Kindle Unlimited gave me several free months of reading so I'm wasting that. But every single thing I read or watch becomes more work for me.
The Lazarus Project (2022) s01e02
Episode 2
(from internet transcript)
Television: Military officials have threatened to escalate
Archie: I thought coup-ing would be easier than this.
Ross: We'll try again.
