Twin Towers Demolished, Pentagon Hit in Terrorist Attacks

The nation reeled in horror and seethed in anger Tuesday as knife-wielding terrorists hijacked four passenger jets and steered three of them into the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington.
Thousands were feared dead in New York, and up to 800 were killed in the nation's capital.
In a day of infamy being compared to the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, the Twin Towers crashed to the ground about an hour after passenger airliners smashed into each of the 110-story buildings at 8:45 a.m. and 9:03 a.m. EDT Tuesday.
Forty minutes after the second New York crash, another airliner smashed into the side of the Pentagon. The nerve center of the American military continued to burn well into the night.

American Airlines Flight 77 was the third flight hijacked as part of the September 11 attacks. It was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon.
At the time of the attacks, approximately 18,000 people worked in the Pentagon, which was 4,000 fewer than before renovations began in 1998. The section of the Pentagon, which had recently been renovated at a cost of $250 million, housed the Naval Command Center and other Pentagon offices, as well as some unoccupied offices. The crash and subsequent fire penetrated three outer ring sections of the western side. The outermost ring section was largely destroyed, and a large section collapsed. One hundred and twenty-five people in the Pentagon died in the attack.
In all, there were 189 casualties at the Pentagon site, including 125 in the Pentagon building and 64 on board Flight 77. Passenger Barbara Olson was en route to a taping of Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. A group of children, their chaperones, and National Geographic Society staff members were also on board, embarking on an educational trip west to the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary near Santa Barbara, California. Also, Zoe, 8, and Dana Falkenberg, 3, were killed in the crash, along with their parents, Charles Falkenberg and Leslie Whittington. The family, of University Park, MD, was going to Australia for two months, via Los Angeles.

Five of the 184 persons killed at the Pentagon by the September 11 hijackers lost more than their lives: All trace of them was obliterated. Nothing identifiable was found to bury or to mourn over. These are "the lost": four military-minded adults whose careers took them to the pinnacle of the nation's defense complex and a curly-haired 3-year-old girl clutching her cherished Lambie when terrorists slammed the hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 jetliner into the Pentagon. What is left are their names, loving memories about their shortened time on earth and unfulfilled dreams:
Dana Falkenberg, 3, planned to marry a prince, perhaps after starting preschool at the Silver Spring YMCA.
Tiny Dana Falkenberg is special in this group and not just because of her big brown eyes, soft blond curls and Shirley Temple face. Seven weeks past her third birthday party, July 21, 2001, Dana was the youngest of five children aboard American Airlines Flight 77. She joined all the others in a 9:37 a.m. rendezvous with death at what Petty Officer Hemenway called the "safest place in the world." Dana's parents and sister died with her.

Bill Gates' appointment of longtime friend and confidant Steve Ballmer as president of Microsoft marks a return to company roots for both senior executives.
Gates said he wants to return to the product side of Microsoft, which he, Paul Allen and Harvard colleague Monte Davidoff started 23 years ago by authoring a version of the BASIC programming language for the first mass-marketed personal computer.
Ballmer, who had been executive vice president for sales and support, will assume more day-to-day operational oversight, similar to the responsibilities he had when he started work at Microsoft as operations chief and the company's 28th employee in June 1980.

Dana Falkenberg (July 21, 1998 - September 11, 2001).
Dana was three years old when she died in the crash of American Airlines Flight 77. She was traveling to Australia with her father, Charles Falkenberg, mother, Leslie A. Whittington, and sister, Zoe Falkenberg for her mother's sabbatical from work.

Five of the 184 persons killed at the Pentagon by the September 11 hijackers lost more than their lives: All trace of them was obliterated. Nothing identifiable was found to bury or to mourn over. These are "the lost": four military-minded adults whose careers took them to the pinnacle of the nation's defense complex and a curly-haired 3-year-old girl clutching her cherished Lambie when terrorists slammed the hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 jetliner into the Pentagon. What is left are their names, loving memories about their shortened time on earth and unfulfilled dreams:
Dana Falkenberg, 3, planned to marry a prince, perhaps after starting preschool at the Silver Spring YMCA.
Tiny Dana Falkenberg is special in this group and not just because of her big brown eyes, soft blond curls and Shirley Temple face. Seven weeks past her third birthday party, July 21, 2001, Dana was the youngest of five children aboard American Airlines Flight 77. She joined all the others in a 9:37 a.m. rendezvous with death at what Petty Officer Hemenway called the "safest place in the world." Dana's parents and sister died with her.
