NASA announced Monday that two Israeli astronauts training in Houston are Ilan Ramon, 45, an Israeli air force colonel, and Itzhak Mayo, 44, an Israeli air force lieutenant colonel. The launch date and the rest of the crew have not been announced by NASA. But the two men, one a backup, have been training as mission specialists at the Johnson Space Center since July 1998.

AUSTIN - The only other time a space shuttle traveling at Mach 18 experienced the unbalanced airflow that Columbia battled before its breakup, it generated the highest-ever temperature on a shuttle descent.
That could be a signal that Columbia had multiple failures, first creating a difference between the airflow on its left and right wings and then being unable to handle it, said Philip Varghese, a University of Texas expert on hypersonic flows.
"It could be one of 50 things" that led to Columbia's destruction, added Hans Mark, the former No. 2 official at NASA and now a UT professor. They joined a third colleague in a presentation for students and other faculty Thursday on what could have gone wrong when the shuttle re-entered the atmosphere Saturday.
Afterward, they expressed annoyance at those who are strongly advancing specific theories this early in the investigation.
"I think we should give these guys (NASA) a little time to find out," said Stelios Kyriakides, the third professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering & Engineering Mechanics. "My colleagues who go on TV to speculate are irresponsible."
Mark, NASA deputy director for a dozen of the shuttle's first flights, did say that he felt an object falling off the external fuel tank was the mostly likely cause of damage to Columbia's tiles. And damaged tiles almost certainly contributed to the catastrophe, he said.
Shuttles occasionally experience a difference in flow on each side at lower speeds, later in the landing pattern. But only once before has a shuttle had "asymmetric transition" at Mach 18, which was the Columbia's speed just before it broke up Saturday.
On that prior mission - STS 73 in November 1995 - the shuttle experienced its hottest landing ever, according to a research paper Varghese read in preparation for his talk. The shuttle's flight control system was able to handle the uneven flows and the flight ended normally.
That led Varghese to suspect that Columbia's break-up was caused by "a chain of unfortunate coincidences, no one of which is catastrophic by itself."

Space Shuttle
The Space Shuttle, part of the Space Transportation System (STS), is a spacecraft operated by NASA for orbital human spaceflight missions. It began operations in 1982 and is scheduled to be retired from service in 2010 after 134 launches. Major missions have included launching numerous satellites and interplanetary probes, conducting space science experiments, and servicing and construction of space stations. The Shuttle has been used for orbital space missions by NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense, the European Space Agency, and Germany. The United States funded STS development and shuttle operations.
Almost the entire space shuttle re-entry, except for lowering the landing gear and deploying the air data probes, is normally performed under computer control. However, the re-entry can be flown entirely manually if an emergency arises. The approach and landing phase can be controlled by the autopilot, but is usually hand flown.
The vehicle begins re-entry by firing the Orbital maneuvering system engines, while flying upside down, backside first, in the opposite direction to orbital motion for approximately three minutes, which reduces the shuttle's velocity by about 200 mph (322 km/h). The resultant slowing of the Shuttle lowers its orbital perigee down into the upper atmosphere. The shuttle then flips over, by pushing its nose down (which is actually "up" relative to the Earth, because it's flying upside down). The vehicle starts encountering more significant air density in the lower thermosphere at about 400,000 ft (120 km), at around Mach 25, 8,200 m/s (30,000 km/h; 18,000 mph). The vehicle is controlled by a combination of RCS thrusters and control surfaces, to fly at a 40 degree nose-up attitude, producing high drag, not only to slow it down to landing speed, but also to reduce reentry heating. As the vehicle encounters progressively denser air, it begins a gradual transition from spacecraft to aircraft. In a straight line, its 40 degree nose-up attitude would cause the descent angle to flatten-out, or even rise. The vehicle therefore performs a series of four steep S-shaped banking turns, each lasting several minutes, at up to 70 degrees of bank, while still maintaining the 40 degree angle of attack. In this way it dissipates speed sideways rather than upwards. This occurs during the 'hottest' phase of re-entry, when the heat-shield glows red and the
G-forces are at their highest. By the end of the last turn, the transition to aircraft is almost complete. The vehicle levels its wings, lowers its nose into a shallow dive and begins its approach to the landing site.

The entry phase of flight begins approximately five minutes before entry interface, which occurs at an altitude of 400,000 feet. At EI minus five minutes, the orbiter is at an altitude of about 557,000 feet, traveling at 25,400 feet per second, and is approximately 4,400 nautical miles (5,063 statute miles) from the landing site. The goal of guidance, navigation and flight control software is to guide and control the orbiter from this state (in which aerodynamic forces are not yet felt) through the atmosphere to a precise landing on the designated runway. All of this must be accomplished without exceeding the thermal or structural limits of the orbiter.
The entry phase is divided into three separate phases because of the unique software requirements.
In the automatic mode, the orbiter is essentially a missile, and the flight crew monitors the instruments to verify that the vehicle is following the correct trajectory. The onboard computers execute the flight control laws (equations). If the vehicle diverges from the trajectory, the crew can take over at any time
Guidance performs different tasks during the entry, TAEM and approach and landing subphases. During the entry subphase, guidance attempts to keep the orbiter on a trajectory that provides protection against overheating, overdynamic pressure and excessive normal acceleration limits. To do this, it sends commands to flight control to guide the orbiter through a tight corridor limited on one side by altitude and velocity requirements for ranging (in order to make the runway) and orbiter control and on the other side by thermal constraints. Ranging is accomplished by adjusting drag acceleration to velocity so that the orbiter stays in that corridor. Drag acceleration can be adjusted primarily in two ways: by modifying the angle of attack, which changes the orbiter's cross-sectional area with respect to the airstream, or by adjusting the orbiter's bank angle, which affects lift and thus the orbiter's sink rate into denser atmosphere, which in turn affects
drag. Using angle of attack as the primary means of controlling drag results in faster energy dissipation with a steeper trajectory but violates the thermal constraint on the orbiter's surfaces. For this reason, the orbiter's bank angle (roll control) is used as the primary method of controlling drag, and thus ranging, during this phase. Increasing the roll angle decreases the vertical component of lift, causing a higher sink rate. Increasing the roll rate raises the surface temperature of the orbiter, but not nearly as drastically as does an equal angle of attack command. The orbiter's angle of attack is kept at a high value (40 degrees) during most of this phase to protect the upper surfaces from extreme heat. It is modulated at certain times to ''tweak'' the system and is ramped down to a new value at the end of this phase for orbiter controllability. Using bank angle to adjust drag acceleration causes the orbiter to turn off course. Therefore, at
times, the orbiter must be rolled back toward the runway. This is called a roll reversal and is commanded as a function of azimuth error from the runway. The ground track during this phase, then, results in a series of S-turns.

AUSTIN - The only other time a space shuttle traveling at Mach 18 experienced the unbalanced airflow that Columbia battled before its breakup, it generated the highest-ever temperature on a shuttle descent.
That could be a signal that Columbia had multiple failures, first creating a difference between the airflow on its left and right wings and then being unable to handle it, said Philip Varghese, a University of Texas expert on hypersonic flows.
"It could be one of 50 things" that led to Columbia's destruction, added Hans Mark, the former No. 2 official at NASA and now a UT professor. They joined a third colleague in a presentation for students and other faculty Thursday on what could have gone wrong when the shuttle re-entered the atmosphere Saturday.
Afterward, they expressed annoyance at those who are strongly advancing specific theories this early in the investigation.
"I think we should give these guys (NASA) a little time to find out," said Stelios Kyriakides, the third professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering & Engineering Mechanics. "My colleagues who go on TV to speculate are irresponsible."
Mark, NASA deputy director for a dozen of the shuttle's first flights, did say that he felt an object falling off the external fuel tank was the mostly likely cause of damage to Columbia's tiles. And damaged tiles almost certainly contributed to the catastrophe, he said.
Shuttles occasionally experience a difference in flow on each side at lower speeds, later in the landing pattern. But only once before has a shuttle had "asymmetric transition" at Mach 18, which was the Columbia's speed just before it broke up Saturday.
On that prior mission - STS 73 in November 1995 - the shuttle experienced its hottest landing ever, according to a research paper Varghese read in preparation for his talk. The shuttle's flight control system was able to handle the uneven flows and the flight ended normally.
That led Varghese to suspect that Columbia's break-up was caused by "a chain of unfortunate coincidences, no one of which is catastrophic by itself."
