Dr. Byron Ward, Noted Radiologist, Avid Puget Sound Sailboat Racer

Byron H. Ward enjoyed life. He was a skier, a mountain climber and a sailor as well as director of radiology at Children's Hospital and Medical Center for over 30 years.
"He was happy every day. He enjoyed everything about life, especially the out of doors," said his wife, Suzanne.
Dr. Ward, 78, a Laurelhurst resident for many years, died Sunday (March 22).
Dr. Ward was born and grew up in Spokane and followed his father, Dr. Charles B. Ward, who was a pioneer in the field of radiology, into the practice of radiology. Charles Ward came to Seattle in the early 1930s and established the Tumor Institute at Swedish Hospital before going into private practice here.
Dr. Ward earned a degree in physics from the University of Washington in 1935, then a medical degree from the University of Oregon. He did his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he became a fellow of the clinic.
In 1944, World War II interrupted Dr. Ward's work at the Mayo Clinic and he was drafted into the Army. Until 1947 he served as the director of radiology at Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver.
After living briefly in San Jose, Calif., and Bellingham, Dr. Ward came to Seattle and took over the radiology department at Children's Hospital in 1950, when it was still on Queen Anne Hill.
Dr. Ward kept that position until he retired on his 70th birthday in 1983. After retiring, he still worked part-time doing consulting and teaching.
Dr. Ward also was on the staff of the University of Washington, teaching radiology to medical students.
Introduced to boating as a young boy, Dr. Ward became an avid sailor, piloting his 32-foot sloop, Seaward, around Puget Sound and in many races.
Dr. Stanley Stamm, a cardiologist and longtime associate of Dr. Ward's at Children's Hospital, remembers him as an "outstanding teacher and physician." He also recalled Dr. Ward's yodeling.
Going to or coming back from lunch he would always yodel, Stamm recalled. "You could hear him all over the hospital. He even was pretty good at it."
They used to ski together, and if they lost sight of one another all he would have to do is listen for the yodeling, Stamm said. Dr. Ward skied until 1975.

Electoral fraud
Electoral fraud is illegal interference with the process of an election. Acts of fraud tend to involve affecting vote counts to bring about a election result, whether by increasing the vote share of the favored candidate, depressing the vote share of the rival candidates or both. What electoral fraud is under law varies from country to country; methods which are illegal in one country may not be in another. Many kinds of voter fraud are outlawed in electoral legislation but others are in violation of general laws such as those banning assault, harassment or libel. Although technically the term 'electoral fraud' covers only those acts which are illegal, the term is sometimes used to describe acts which although legal, are considered to be morally unacceptable, outside the spirit of electoral laws or in violation of the principles of democracy. Show elections, in which only one candidate can win, are sometimes considered to be electoral fraud although they may comply with the law.
In national elections, successful electoral fraud can have the effect of a coup d'état or corruption of democracy. In a narrow election a small amount of fraud may be enough to change the result. If the result is not affected, fraud can still have a damaging effect if not punished, as it can reduce voters' confidence in democracy. Even the perception of fraud can be damaging as it makes people less inclined to accept election results. This can lead to the breakdown of democracy and the establishment of a dictatorship.
Electoral fraud is not limited to political polls and can happen in any election where the potential gain is worth the risk for the cheater; as in elections for labor union officials, student councils, sports judging, and the awarding of merit to books, films, music or television programmes.
Despite many instances of electoral fraud, it remains a difficult phenomenon to study. This follows from its inherent illegality. Harsh penalties aimed at deterring electoral fraud make it likely that individuals who perpetrate fraud do so with the expectation that it either will not be discovered or will be excused.
Prosecution
In countries with strong laws and effective legal systems, lawsuits can be brought against those who have allegedly committed fraud; but determent with legal prosecution would not be enough. Although the penalties for getting caught may be severe, the rewards for succeeding are likely to be worth the risk. The rewards range from benefits in contracting to total control of a country.

Tsar Bomba
Tsar Bomba, literally "Tsar-bomb", is the nickname for the AN602 hydrogen bomb (codenamed "Ivan"[citation needed] by its developers) — the largest, most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated, and currently the most powerful explosive ever detonated in human history.
Developed by the Soviet Union, the bomb was originally designed to have a yield of about 100 megatons of TNT (420 PJ); however, the bomb yield was reduced by half in order to limit the amount of nuclear fallout that would result. One bomb was built and tested on October 30, 1961, in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The weapon never entered service.

The Tsar Bomba was a three-stage hydrogen bomb with a yield of 57 megatons (Mt). This is equivalent to ten times the amount of all the explosives used in World War II combined, including Little Boy and Fat Man, the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A three-stage H-bomb uses a fission bomb primary to compress a thermonuclear secondary, as in most H-bombs, and then uses energy from the resulting explosion to compress a much larger additional thermonuclear stage. However, there is evidence that the Tsar Bomba had a number of third stages rather than a single very large one.
