Of course, if I have my way, it would be a moot point because why would I want to go out with her when I am in such an ugly situation? At the minimum, I would want to be back to work so that I have regained some independence. And hey, next time you are in my dreams, dear imaginary girlfriend, how about wearing a bikini? December 8, 1941, is not normally known as a date which will live in infamy. That phrase of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s usually refers to the preceding day, on which the American Naval fleet at Pearl Harbor was savaged by a surprise Japanese air raid. But “Pearl Harbor,” the war novel that is Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen’s latest foray into what they call “active history,” deliberately calls attention to the fact that Japan and Hawaii were on different sides of the International Date Line.
When the attack began, it was Dec. 7 at Pearl Harbor but Dec. 8 in Japan. The book is subtly subtitled “A Novel of December 8th” to signal its attention to the Japanese point of view. On the basis of that detail, you might expect a high level of fastidiousness from “Pearl Harbor.”
And you would be spectacularly wrong. Because you would find phrases like “to withdraw backward was impossible,” sounds like “wretching noises” to accompany vomiting, or constructions like “incredulous as it seemed, America had not reacted.” Although the book has two authors, it could have used a third assigned to cleanup patrol.
This is not a matter of isolated typographical errors. It is a serious case for the comma police, since the book’s war on punctuation is almost as heated as the air assaults it describes.

The 2007 United States Air Force nuclear weapons incident occurred at Minot Air Force Base and Barksdale Air Force Base on August 29–30, 2007. Six AGM-129 ACM cruise missiles, each loaded with a W80-1 variable yield nuclear warhead, were mistakenly loaded on a United States Air Force (USAF) B-52H heavy bomber at Minot and transported to Barksdale. The nuclear warheads in the missiles were supposed to have been removed before taking the missiles from their storage bunker. The missiles with the nuclear warheads were not reported missing and remained mounted to the aircraft at both Minot and Barksdale for a period of 36 hours. During this period, the warheads were not protected by the various mandatory security precautions required for nuclear weapons.
Between 08:00 and 09:00 (local time) on August 29, 2007 a group of USAF airmen, called the breakout crew, entered one of the weapons storage bunkers at Minot to prepare AGM-129 missiles for transport to Barksdale. That day's missile transport, the sixth of 12 scheduled ferry missions, was to have consisted of 12 AGM-129s, installed with training warheads, with six missiles per pylon and one pylon mounted under each wing of a Barksdale-assigned, 2nd Bomb Wing B-52 aircraft. When the airmen entered the bunker, six actual warheads were still installed on their missiles, as opposed to having been replaced with the dummy training warheads.
The B-52 departed Minot at 08:40 and landed at Barksdale at 11:23 (local times) on August 30. The aircraft remained parked and without special guard until 20:30, when a munitions team arrived to remove the missiles. After a member of the munitions crew noticed something unusual about some of the missiles, at 22:00 a "skeptical" supervisor determined that nuclear warheads were present and ordered them secured and the incident reported, 36 hours after the missiles were removed from the bunker at Minot.

The widespread disregard for nuclear weapons safety standards by airmen at Minot and Barksdale Air Force bases led to the unprecedented “Bent Spear” incident in which six nuclear warheads were mistakenly loaded onto a B-52 and flown from North Dakota to Louisiana on Aug. 29-30, Air Force officials said Friday after an intensive six-week investigation.
The Air Force relieved the 5th Munitions Squadron commander at Minot immediately after the incident. On Friday, it announced that three more commanders have been sacked.
Five steps to failure
Using the same briefing presented to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates earlier Friday, Newton summarized the five mistakes made by airmen that led to the incident and offered a timeline of events.
The first mistake occurred at the beginning of an operation to transport 12 Advanced Cruise Missiles on a B-52 Stratofortress bomber from Minot to Barksdale, part of a Defense Department program to decommission 400 of these missiles in the U.S. stockpile.
On the morning of Aug. 29, airmen assigned to the Minot weapons storage area were supposed to pick up and transport two pylons to a B-52 assigned to Barksdale. Each pylon is a self-contained package of six cruise missiles that can be quickly mounted to the wing of a Stratofortress. But the pylon had not been properly prepared, and the airmen failed to examine all the warheads on the missiles mounted to the pylons.

About 150 friends and relatives attended the ceremony Friday night under a tent at a hotel in this Washington suburb.
It was the third marriage for Mr. Gingrich, 57, and the first for Ms. Bisek, 34. Mr. Gingrich was divorced from his second wife, Marianne Gingrich, in December 1999 after 18 years of marriage. He divorced his first wife, Jackie Gingrich, his high school math teacher, after 19 years.

DAYTON, Ohio - Mead Corp. said yesterday that it had agreed to sell its unit that includes the Lexis/Nexis on-line information operation for $1.5 billion in cash to Anglo-Dutch publisher Reed Elsevier PLC.
Lexis is an on-line computer system that supplies the texts of legal cases. Nexis is a news, business and financial information database.
Dayton-based Mead announced in May it planned to sell its Mead Data Central unit, which includes Lexis/Nexis, to focus on its paper and forest-product business. It acquired the unit for $6 million in 1968.
Analysts said at the time that Lexis and Nexis needed a corporate parent with more resources to improve the services in the face of increasingly tough and cheaper competition.
The sale also includes Michie Co., a state law publisher.

Reed Elsevier To Buy Mead's On-Line Law, News Services

DAYTON, Ohio - Mead Corp. said yesterday that it had agreed to sell its unit that includes the Lexis/Nexis on-line information operation for $1.5 billion in cash to Anglo-Dutch publisher Reed Elsevier PLC.
Lexis is an on-line computer system that supplies the texts of legal cases. Nexis is a news, business and financial information database.
Dayton-based Mead announced in May it planned to sell its Mead Data Central unit, which includes Lexis/Nexis, to focus on its paper and forest-product business. It acquired the unit for $6 million in 1968.
Analysts said at the time that Lexis and Nexis needed a corporate parent with more resources to improve the services in the face of increasingly tough and cheaper competition.
The sale also includes Michie Co., a state law publisher.

A cautionary tale. A plane carrying a weapon more dangerous than a nuclear weapon goes down near Greece. To prevent panic, the officials go in dressed as tourists (who are dressed so casually that the pilots assume that they are all gay). The pilots are not to make themselves known and can't contact the rescue team. The secrecy causes a comedy of errors including the desolate Greek Isle deciding that since tourists have now arrived, they have to become touristy.

NEW YORK - A B-52 bomber mistakenly armed with live nuclear missiles flew straight across the heartland where millions of Americans live - and the crew had no clue what they were carrying.
An Air Force spokesman insisted "there was never a danger to the American public" and called the missile mishap last Thursday an "isolated incident."
"Air Force standards are very exacting when it comes to munitions handling," Lt. Col. Ed Thomas said. "The weapons were always in our custody."
The B-52 was loaded with cruise missiles carrying nuclear warheads ranging from 5 to 150 kilotons in destructive force, mounted onto pylons on the bomber's wings, according to the Military Times newspaper, which broke the story.
"You can wipe out a good-sized city with a 5-kiloton blast," said Jim Riccio, a nuclear policy analyst for Greenpeace. "A 150-kiloton warhead is 10 times the size of what they dropped on Hiroshima."

Don't be fooled by the marketing stunts Microsoft is using to promote the Zune, its belated iPod challenger going on sale today.
During Seattle's concert at Westlake Park, Chairman Bill Gates showed up
Chief Executive Steve Ballmer stayed in Redmond, where he said by phone that he expects Microsoft will "pretty much" sell all the Zunes it will produce this holiday season.
None of that business stuff matters to potential buyers like Hillary Bernoff, 15. She was wandering through downtown Seattle when she came across the concert, where a reporter asked if it got her interested in the Zune.
"What is a Zune?" she said

Date with an Angel tells the story of Jim Sanders (Michael Knight), an executive at a cosmetics company who's about to marry Patty Winston (Phoebe Cates), who is also the daughter of Jim's boss. But Jim also suffers from a brain tumor, and his headaches have gotten worse. Indeed, it is suggested he will die, and an angel (Emanuelle Beart) arrives on the scene, given the task of bringing Jim's soul back to heaven on the night of his engagement party.
But after his three buddies 'kidnap' Jim to take him to another celebration for him at his home, Jim decides that he had enough of partying and goes to sleep. Later, Jim wakes up to see a bright light illuminating from his apartment's swimming pool...and discovers the angel knocked unconscious after her wings were clipped by a satellite.
Since having a real live angel around could hurt his upcoming nuptials to the spoiled Patty, Jim decides to keep her shielded from the world while he helps her repair her wings. Inevitably, his buddies and his boss both discover the blonde beauty in his house; so does Patty, who thinks the angel is having an affair with Jim after spying the angel at his apartment. Later, Patty sees the angel and Jim together again...on television, as he rescues her from being exposed to the world by his buddies, after they kidnapped her by using Wendy's french fries as bait.
After they escape to an old hideaway that he knew from childhood, Jim finally helps the angel restore her wings, allowing her to return to the pearly gates. However, a drunken and delusional Patty (who in a memorable scene puts on a pair of panties outside her blue jeans), starts chasing after Jim with a shotgun; her father, Jim's parents, and his buddies also arrive to confront him. Amid the chaos, Jim's uncontrollable headaches cause him to collapse to the ground, but the angel returns to save him, by unleashing storm clouds.
Later, in the hospital, Jim's brain tumor gets worse and his situation appears grim. But then the angel comes back to see him, finally telling Jim that it was her original intention to take him to heaven. Instead, she actually saves him, and in the process is returned to earth as a normal human being
