David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro were not being subtle when they named their new eight-episode Amazon show, “Goliath.”
In the show, Billy McBride (Billy Bob Thorton), a down-on-his-luck attorney working out of a seedy Santa Monica motel, takes on a wrongful death case against Borns Technology, a giant defense contractor represented by his former mega firm, Cooperman McBride. The premise is nothing groundbreaking; the show is a pretty clear-cut case of good versus evil in the tradition of Erin Brockovich and basically everything by John Grisham. The twist is the element of revenge — McBride is motivated in part by the desire to get back at his old firm, a fantasy many former Big Law lawyers may harbor and secretly or not so secretly wish to indulge in.
But Big Law attorneys will recognize few similarities between real firms and Cooperman McBride, the fictional 1000-attorney, multi-office firm with revenues of $2.1 billion. (A little context: Cooperman would rank eighth on the American Lawyer’s 2016 list of richest law firms, right between Clifford Chance and Freshfields).
In “Goliath,” Big Law is sleek-ified to maximum effect. Cooperman McBride’s offices look like a cross between a Four Seasons and the day spa in “Zoolander.” Exceptionally attractive lawyers in designer outfits work in expertly decorated, clutterless, glass cubes (Where are the binders is a question I asked myself often while watching this show), and the firm employs some pretty creepy advanced surveillance technology on associates.
The actual legal battle feels boilerplate – big, bad corporation screwing over the little guy. But the show avoids becoming a cliché with fresh, interesting characters.
In Billy McBride’s first scene, he steals a piece of bacon from a discarded breakfast tray at his motel and gives it to a stray dog, which made me like him immediately. (Using dogs as a way to show character is always effective. See the opening scene of House of Cards). The Hoosier-obsessed, cross-word playing, day-drinking McBride is an easy underdog to root for. The same can be said for his rag-tag legal team, which consists of a hyper real estate agent who is also a criminal lawyer, Patty Solis-Papagian (Nina Arianda), and a hooker with a knack for legal drafting
