February 3, 1972 (Thursday)
"Tutankhamen's curse" claimed another victim nearly 3,300 years after the death of the boy pharaoh (1324 BC). As King Tut's mask was being placed on a plane to be taken from Cairo to Paris, the museum's Director of Antiquities, Gamal Mehrej, died.

Curse of the pharaohs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The curse of the pharaohs refers to an alleged curse believed by some to be cast upon any person who disturbs the mummy, of an Ancient Egyptian person, especially a pharaoh. This curse, which does not differentiate between thieves and archaeologists, allegedly can cause bad luck, illness or death. Since the mid-20th century, many authors and documentaries have argued that the curse is 'real' in the sense of being caused by scientifically explicable causes such as bacteria or radiation. However, the modern origins of Egyptian mummy curse tales, their development primarily in European cultures, the shift from magic to science to explain curses, and their changing uses—from condemning disturbance of the dead to entertaining horror film audiences—suggest that Egyptian curses are primarily a cultural, not exclusively scientific, phenomenon.

WEIR: When we first began to use the Stargate we found on Earth, we got ourselves into serious trouble -- why?
SHEPPARD: I don't need a history lesson ...
WEIR: Because the people in charge didn't consider the ramifications before they reacted.
SHEPPARD: They took our people -- how am I supposed to react?
WEIR: And we're defenceless -- you said so yourself. How do you know going off on some half-assed rescue mission isn't gonna to bring them all right back here to our doorstep?
SHEPPARD: Maybe it will. But it's the right thing to do. Why? Because it is!
WEIR: John ...
SHEPPARD: If we're not gonna do this -- and I mean right now -- let's just turn tail and pack up, because they're coming.
WEIR: You don't know that.
SHEPPARD: Our people are in the hands of the enemy, Doctor. Do you know what that means? It is just a matter of time before the Wraith figure out that this is the base of our operations.
WEIR: I just need more information. I mean, who knows, maybe we could negotiate a peaceful ...
SHEPPARD: Peaceful? Are you kidding?! We weren't there for more than a few hours before they showed up.
WEIR: Is it possible they came because of you, and that one of these people you brought back here with you tipped them off?
SHEPPARD: It's possible.
WEIR: See, that is exactly the kind of snap decision I'm referring to!
SHEPPARD: They're not all bad people, and, you know, if we're gonna stick around here, we need friends.
WEIR: OK. I see your point. Now you see mine: I will not authorise a rescue mission unless I am sure there is at least a remote chance of success. I'm not sending more good people, including you, to their deaths.
SHEPPARD: OK.

JACKSON: We've gotten closer and closer to finding the location of the Lost City but it turns out we've been looking in the wrong place all along. (He walks over to a whiteboard on which are drawn six Stargate coordinates with the numbers 1-6 above them.) Now, we thought we had a Stargate address -- six symbols representing coordinates in space that determine the location of the planet the Ancients went to after they left Antarctica. Now, recently we determined a seventh symbol. (He picks up a pen and draws the symbol representing Earth on the board to the right of the other symbols.)
WEIR: The point of origin, Earth.
JACKSON: That's not it.
McKAY: Then your address must be incorrect.
JACKSON: Not incorrect… incomplete.
(He draws another symbol in between the sixth symbol and the Earth symbol.)
WEIR: What are you saying, Doctor Jackson?
(Daniel numbers the newest symbol 7 and the Earth symbol 8.)
JACKSON: It's an eight symbol address. What we're looking for may be further away than we ever imagined, but it's not out of reach.
McKAY: Atlantis!
JACKSON: Atlantis. I think we can go there.

SHEPPARD: Someone's been busy, you know?
TEYLA: The drawings in the caves are extensive. Many must date back thousands of years -- or more.
(Sheppard makes his way around the walls, looking at the drawings. He points to one.)
SHEPPARD: Does this represent the destruction of your city?
TEYLA: This drawing far predates that.
SHEPPARD: So, what, someone knew it was going to happen?
TEYLA: I believe it happens again and again. The Wraith allow our kind to grow in numbers, and when that number reaches a certain point they return to cull their human herd. Sometimes a few hundred years will pass before they awaken again. We've visited many, many worlds -- I know of none untouched by the Wraith. The last great holocaust was five generations ago, but still they return, in smaller numbers, to remind us of their power.

At the other end of the wormhole, Sheppard steps out into a darkened room. The marines who already went through are cautiously checking out the area. Directly ahead of the Gate is a flight of steps leading up to another floor. Somewhere on the upper level, which has balconies overlooking the Gateroom, some lights come on.
SUMNER: Teams one and two, secure the immediate area.
(Behind Sheppard, we see the Stargate. It appears more modern than the Gates we have seen in the Milky Way: the symbols around the Gate are illuminated from within and the chevrons are glowing green. Sheppard turns to look in that direction as some more marines come through.)
(Back at S.G.C., the scientists begin walking up the ramp, hauling or carrying their equipment.)
(On the other side of the wormhole, the marines are still checking out the area. In a corridor off the Gateroom, a marine walks near to a closed door, which slides open automatically. Sumner looks at this in surprise, then turns back towards the Gateroom.)
SUMNER: Everyone else find an open space and park it until instructed otherwise.
(Weir stands in the middle of the Gateroom, gazing around the room. Sheppard and McKay head towards the steps. As Sheppard puts his foot on the first step, the stairs light up.)
WEIR: Who's doing that?

Imperial Wireless Chain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Imperial Wireless Chain was a strategic international wireless telegraphy communications network, created to link the countries of the British Empire. Although the idea was conceived prior to World War I, Britain was the last of the world's Great Powers to implement an operational system. The first link in the chain, between Leafield in Oxfordshire and Cairo, Egypt, eventually opened on 24 April 1922
Initial scheme
In 1910 the Colonial Office received a formal proposal from the Marconi Company, to construct series of wireless telegraphy stations to link the British Empire within three years. While not then accepted, the Marconi proposal created serious interest in the concept.
Parliament ruled out the creation of a private monopoly to provide the service and concluded that no government department was in a position to do so, and the Treasury were very reluctant to fund the creation of a new department. It was decided that contracting the construction to a commercial "wireless company" was the favoured option, and a contract was signed with Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Company in March 1912. The Government then found itself facing severe criticism and appointed a select committee to examine the topic. After hearing evidence from the Admiralty, War Office, India Office, and representatives from South Africa, the Committee unanimously concluded that a "chain of Imperial wireless stations" should be established as a matter of urgency. An Expert Committee also advised that Marconi were the only company with technology that was proven to operate reliably over the distances required (in excess of 2,000 miles (3,200 km)) "if rapid installation and immediate and trustworthy communication be desired".
After further negotiations prompted by Treasury pressure, a modified contract was ratified by Parliament on 8 August 1913, with 221 Members of Parliament voting in favour, 140 against. The course of these events were disrupted somewhat by the breaking of the Marconi scandal, when it was alleged that highly placed members of the governing Liberal party had used their knowledge of the negotiations to indulge in insider trading in Marconi's shares. Of rather more consequence was the outbreak of World War I, which led to the suspension of the contract by the Government. Meanwhile Germany, in contrast, successfully constructed its own wireless chain before the war, for the cost equivalent to two million pounds sterling, and was able to use it to its advantage during the conflict.
Beam stations
The shortwave Imperial Wireless Chain "beam stations" operated in pairs; one transmitting and one receiving. Pairs of stations were sited at (transmitters first):
Tetney and Winthorpe (with Ballan and Rockbank in Australia, and with Khadki and Daund in India)
Ongar and Brentwood
Dorchester and Somerton
Bodmin and Bridgwater – the latter actually in the hamlet of Huntworth which is nearer to North Petherton (with Drummondville and Yamachiche in Canada, and with Kliphevel (now Klipheuwel) and Milnerton in South Africa)
At Bodmin and Bridgwater, each aerial stretched to nearly half a mile (800 m) long, and consisted of a row of five 277 feet (84 m) high lattice masts, erected in a line at 640 feet (200 m) intervals and at right angles to the overseas receiving station. These were topped by cross-arm measuring 10 feet (3.0 m) high by 90 feet (27 m) wide, from which the vertical wires of the aerial were hung, forming a "curtain antenna". At Tetney the antenna for India was similar to those at Bodmin and Bridgwater, while the Australian aerial was carried on three 275 feet (84 m) high masts.
Electronic components for the system were built at Marconi's New Street wireless factory in Chelmsford.

Wireless telegraphy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wireless telegraphy is the transmission of electric telegraphy signals without wires (wirelessly). It is now used as a historical term for early radio telegraphy systems which communicated with radio waves, although when the term originated in the late 19th century it was also used for a variety of other experimental techniques for communicating telegraphically without wires, such as photoelectric and induction telegraphy.
Wireless telegraphy came to mean Morse code transmitted by radio waves (electromagnetic waves), initially called "Hertzian waves", discovered by Heinrich Hertz in 1886. The first practical wireless telegraphy transmitters and receivers were developed by Guglielmo Marconi beginning in 1895. By 1910 communication by Hertzian waves was universally referred to as "radio", and the term wireless telegraphy has been largely replaced by the more modern term "radiotelegraphy". The transmission of speech (radiotelephony) began to displace wireless telegraphy by the 1920s for many applications, making possible radio broadcasting. Wireless telegraphy continued to be used for private point-to-point business, governmental, and military communication, such as telegrams and diplomatic communications, and evolved into radioteletype networks. Continuous wave (CW) radiotelegraphy is regulated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as emission type A1A.
Today, due to more modern text transmission methods, Morse code radiotelegraphy for commercial use has become obsolete. On shipboard the computer and satellite linked GMDSS system has largely replaced Morse as a means of communication. Telegraphy is taught on a very limited basis by the military. A CW coastal station, KSM, still exists in California, run primarily as a museum by volunteers, and occasional contacts with ships are made. Radio beacons, particularly in the aviation service, but also as "placeholders" for commercial ship-to-shore systems, also transmit Morse but at very slow speeds.
The US Federal Communications Commission does still issue a lifetime commercial Radiotelegraph Operator License. This requires passing a simple written test on regulations, a more complex written exam on technology, and demonstrating Morse reception at 20 words per minute plain language and 16 wpm code groups. (Credit is given for amateur extra class licenses earned under the old 20 wpm requirement.) Wireless telegraphy is still used widely today by amateur radio hobbyists where it is commonly referred to as radio telegraphy, continuous wave, or just CW. However its knowledge is not required to obtain any class of amateur license.

Roslin: Excuse me. (She enters and shuts the door.) One of the passengers has a short-wave wireless. They've heard a report that Caprica has been nuked. It has, hasn't it?
Pilot: Caprica and three other colonies. (He holds a paper out to her. She takes it and grips his hand to keep it from shaking.) I guess I, uh, I should go make an announcement or something.
Roslin: I'll do it. I'm a member of the political cabinet, it's my responsibility. (He nods.) While I'm doing that, I would ask that you... contact the Ministry of Civil Defense, see what we can do to help.

Protection of Journalistic Work Products Statement Announcing Intention To Propose Legislation.
December 13, 1978
Of all the basic rights that contribute to human development, one of the most important is the first amendment freedom of the press. A free press independent of government control and expressing a variety of viewpoints is crucial to both democracy and individual liberty.
Since last May, my administration has been trying to explore the proper constitutional way for us and the Congress together to correct the threat of encroachment on freedom of the press that was raised in the Stanford Daily case.
As a result of this work, I will soon propose legislation that would restrict police intrusion into news media offices, and would give members of the press notice and an opportunity to challenge requests for the products of their reporting work.
I think this is a major step forward in protecting the integrity of the freedom of the press.

"High Hopes"
Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
