CARTER: I don't know. I guess I've always had a soft spot for the lunatic fringe. he was...he was charming.

Man in Iwo Jima Flag-Raising Photo Was Misidentified, Marine Corps Says

One of the six men believed to have been part of the iconic moment when an American flag was hoisted at Iwo Jima was misidentified, the Marine Corps confirmed.
An investigative panel led by a retired general reviewed claims that one of the men was not Navy corpsman John Bradley, and concluded that he was actually a Marine who was there that day: Pfc. Harold Schultz of Detroit.
"Our history is important to us, and we have a responsibility to ensure it's right," Marine Corps' commandant Gen. Robert Neller said in a statement Thursday.
The black and white photo was taken on Feb. 23, 1945, by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal atop Mount Suribachi. At the time, Marines were helping to capture the tiny Pacific island in a bloody battle against the Japanese during World War II.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt later asked that all of the men in the picture be identified — a difficult task because their faces were turned or obscured.
Before this most recent investigation that began in late April, one conducted in 1946 found that a person thought to have been part of the flag-raising was actually someone else: Marine Cpl. Harlon Block.

With the correct identification of Schultz, it's now clear that all who took part in the historic moment were Marines. The four remaining men have already been identified as Pfc. Rene Gagnon, Pfc. Ira Hayes, Pfc. Franklin Sousley and Sgt. Michael Strank.
There were actually two flag-raisings that took place that day, and Bradley had been in the first one — not the second hoisting that is depicted in the now-famous photo.
Bradley's son, James, wrote about his father's experience in the best-selling book "Flags of Our Fathers" — later turned into a movie by Clint Eastwood. But with the military investigation in full swing, James Bradley, said last month that he no longer believed his father, who died in 1994 at age 70, was in the photo.
The military investigation was only opened after producers with a Smithsonian Channel documentary, the upcoming "The Unknown Flag Raiser of Iwo Jima," approached them about the true identities of the people involved.
The producers had used an independent forensics expert to help determine that Bradley was in fact Schultz, a mail sorter who died in 1995 at age 70.
Schultz's stepdaughter, Dezreen MacDowell, told The New York Times that he had once quietly claimed in the 1990s to have been an Iwo Jima flag-raiser, but otherwise never spoke of it.
"My mom was distracted and not listening and Harold said, 'I was one of the flag raisers,'" MacDowell recalled. "I said, 'My gosh, Harold, you're a hero.' He said, 'No, I was a Marine.'"
The Marines said it will correct the record to reflect Schultz's name — giving him his due. Still, the spirit of what the men did that day for their country is what's important, Neller said.
"Simply stated, our fighting spirit is captured in that frame, and it remains a symbol of the tremendous accomplishments of our Corps — what they did together and what they represent remains most important," he added. "That doesn't change."

On Thursday, in an interview on the CBS News program "This Morning," Smith said that she had agreed to let the authorities search her home on Wednesday but that she did not know what they were looking for.
With her husband by her side for the interview, she denied knowing anything about the whereabouts of their two sons.
"I did not have anything to do with the abduction of my children," Smith said in the interview.
"I don't think that any parent could love my children more than I do, and I would never even think about doing anything that would harm them," she added. "It's really painful to have the finger pointed at you when it's your children involved."

Lawrence Bragg was born in Adelaide in Australia, where his father was a professor. When Bragg was 19, the family moved to Great Britain, where he studied at Cambridge. He carried out his Nobel Prize-awarded work when he was only 23, partly in collaboration with his father. After his pioneering contributions, Lawrence Bragg continued to be a central figure within his scientific field. Among other things, he was a professor in Manchester and Cambridge and at the Royal Institution in London. He married in 1921 and had four children.
Work
Max von Laue's discovery that diffraction patterns occur when X-rays pass through crystals inspired William and Lawrence Bragg to conduct their own studies in the area. Their contributions included establishing the relationship between the wavelength of the X-ray, its angle of incidence, and the distance between the atomic layers inside the crystal. This provided a powerful tool for studying crystals' structures. Using diffraction pattern methods, it now also became possible to calculate the positions of atoms in crystalline structures.

Everybody loves Truman
How well I remember being on the street. There was this one time earlier this summer. I had been homeless for a few weeks. I hadn't showered in weeks. I hadn't eaten anything in I don't know how long and I didn't care. I am walking along the Burke-Gilman trail one weekday afternoon. I've been awake for 30 hours, just walking. I had walked from Redmond down to Gas Works Park because I was going to sit there for a while and then I was going to jump off the Aurora Bridge. I sat there in the park for the next 24 hours thinking surely someone walk up to me and finally clue me. Maybe like Kafka's Josef K. was thinking, it was all some big joke. But while I feel like I am Josef K., the cops just tell me I am paranoid. If the feds had a Most Un-Wanted list, I am certain I would be on it. So I sat there all day,waiting for someone, anyone to show up and clear away the clouds from the sun. I sat there looking at the bridge. I wasn't entirely sure it would be fatal. I've thought a lot about drowning since my combat experience in the Persian gulf so it didn't seem like a bad way to die. But if I am going to do this thing, I want to be sure it is fatal. So my plan was to get completely drunk to the point of not caring about whether the jump would be fatal. I had walked all the way down there with several beers and a fifth of Jack Daniels in my backpack. I figured if I was drunk enough, the fall would surely knock me out and then I would most certainly drown. I could imagine there were a million sets of eyes watching me that day, some of them with hope in their eyes, hope that I would finally go through with it. But I just couldn't get drunk enough to do it. Not only did I feel like I had too much to live for, too much else I wanted to accomplish, I was also starting to feel angry again. The only time in the past fews years when I have felt alone was when I was on that bridge. If feels like people's prying eyes have permeated every shred of privacy I have but yet standing there on that bridge, I felt like no one was around. I knew they were watching, but for once, they weren't crushing me with their presence. It made no sense. So I started walking back along the B-G trail to Redmond to see if my Jeep was still where I had abandoned it a couple days earlier. I hadn't eaten in days but yet I can somehow walk all the way back there, it's about 25 miles. I started back about 4 in the morning. My plan had been to wait until about 3 am to jump because that it when I figured there wouldn't be much car traffic. I didn't want people around as I committed the only thing I seemed to have control of anymore. So I started back and I'm glad it's not raining anymore, I only had on sweatpants and sweatjacket. It takes me 22 hours to shuffle my way back to my Jeep. Weird(er) things happened to me on the way back. I was really wanting to get back because there was food in my Jeep that a social worker had given me. But I didn't know if it was even there anymore or if it had been towed. I only had some change in my pocket, not even a full dollar. And I could tell people knew who I was. I cannot begin to describe how agonizing that feeling is. There were several instances, but the one that really stood out was when I was stumbling along in between Woodinville and Redmond; I had a serious rash on my legs by this time because this was the first exercise I had had since Ironman CDA 2004. Two bicycle riders were approaching from in front and I overheard as clear as a bell one of the persons ask the other, "Is that him?" Can you grasp what that means? People know I am out here. I am living in the mud and grime and people look at me as some kind of trivia. I will never forget that. I have always had a positive view of the world, I know from experience that there is a lot of bad in this world, but I always looked for the good. But here I am, I have become "Truman Burbank" from "The Truman Show" and people are watching me in this agony and it is entertainment for them. What kind of world has it become? Are people themselves in so much agony and misery in their own lives that my misery makes them forget about their problems?For those last twelve hours or so and I shuffled a long, I could barely put one foot fully in front of the other, I am thinking about not only getting some of that food in my Jeep, but I also have this new feeling coming over me. I start to fantasize that there is going to be some kind of party waiting for me to return. There are going to be big white tents and music and brights lights and a whole lot of people I don't know. My mother is going to be there. She has some good news for me and she bought a new RV for me to rest in as she takes me back to Texas where I can get away from all this. For some reason, I think the Secret Service is tracking me while I am shuffling along because they want to protect me from whatever dangers are hiding in the bushes I pass by. I shuffle along, thinking about how nice it is going to be to take a shower and then go to sleep in the bed in the RV. I was thinking about all the food I am going to eat. Finally about 2 am, it is dark and cold and I walk along the last mile of the trail, a section I know very well from all the miles I have run on it in training for Ironman. First I notice there are no lights. I hear no music. There are no clapping and cheering crowds. I see no big RV waiting for me with its relaxing luxury in the parking lot. My mom isn't there. My Jeep Wrangler (which I have since lost) faithfully sits by itself where I left it. I climb inside, open a can with some fruit in it, accidently cut my wrist slightly on its sharp edges, and go to sleep in the driver's seat to wake up in the daylight.

Citation: Lt. Norris completed an unprecedented ground rescue of 2 downed pilots deep within heavily controlled enemy territory in Quang Tri Province. Lt. Norris, on the night of 10 April, led a 5-man patrol through 2,000 meters of heavily controlled enemy territory, located 1 of the downed pilots at daybreak, and returned to the Forward Operating Base (FOB). On 11 April, after a devastating mortar and rocket attack on the small FOB, Lt. Norris led a 3-man team on 2 unsuccessful rescue attempts for the second pilot. On the afternoon of the 12th, a forward air controller located the pilot and notified Lt. Norris. Dressed in fishermen disguises and using a sampan, Lt. Memorandum for the Secretary of Commerce, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Interior, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Transportation, the Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, the Administrator, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Director, National Science Foundation, the Administrator, Agency for International Development
On several occasions I have pledged the full participation of the United States in the development of a World Weather Watch in cooperation with other nations of the world.
This program, sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization, constitutes one of the largest and most complex scientific and technological undertakings ever attempted as an international effort.
Now the Congress, through Senate Concurrent Resolution 67, approved on May 29, 1968,1 has expressed its support for this program and has urged me to cooperate with other nations in it. This action by the Congress is important and timely.
The time has come to pursue a vigorous international effort to broaden man's knowledge of the science of meteorology to:
--provide a better understanding of the global atmosphere,
--provide earlier and better warnings of severe storms, and other weather hazards,
--further the safety and efficiency of air and sea travel in all parts of the globe,
--benefit industry, commerce and agriculture, and
--improve land and water management.
In accordance with the Concurrent Resolution, I am asking the Secretary of Commerce to continue to coordinate our national efforts in this program by:
--providing a forum for consultation and coordination among the interested Federal departments and agencies and with the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering.
--developing annually in cooperation with the participating agencies a coordinated plan setting forth the proposed participation by Federal agencies in the World Weather Program for the following fiscal year. This plan should be prepared in time to permit its submission to the Congress by March 1 of each year.
The World Weather Program will require extensive collaboration among the nations of the world. Its benefits will flow to the people of all nations. I am therefore asking the Secretary of State to promote, with the assistance of the participating agencies, the development of appropriate bilateral and multilateral arrangements to further international participation and cooperation in this program.
The success of this program will depend on the creative efforts of each of the participating agencies. I call upon them to cooperate fully with the Secretaries of Commerce and State in this important work.
