Stargate: The Movie (1994)

INT—HOTEL, PRESENT DAY

[An old woman, carrying a padded folder under her arm walks up the stairs of the lobby looking for something. She is wearing the eye of Ra pendant—she is Catherine in the present day.]

[Catherine spots a sign that reads: "Symposium Ancient Egypt—THE OLD KINGS and THE IVth DYNASTY, Alameda Room, 2-4 pm." Someone can be heard speaking in the room. She heads in that direction.]

DANIEL
(offscreen)
...then there are symbols painted everywhere: names, titles of owners, lists of offerings.

INT—ALAMEDA ROOM, HOTEL

[Catherine enters the crowded room. She stands by the doorway, watching the proceedings. Daniel Jackson is giving the lecture.]

DANIEL
Every other architectural structure at the time was covered with detailed hieroglyphics. When is the academic community going to accept the fact the pharoahs of the Fourth Dynasty did not build the great pyramids?

[Many of the audience begin to mutter amongst themselves.]

DANIEL
Look, look—inside the pyramid, the most incredible structure ever erected, there are no writings whatsover. And—

THOMAS
Doctor Jackson, you've left out the fact that Colonel Vyse discovered inscriptions with Khufu's name—

DANIEL
Right...

[Daniel nods, raising a finger and starting to write on his blackboard.]

THOMAS
(continuing)
...within the pyramid.

DANIEL
Well, his discovery was a fraud.

[Outraged mutterings come from amongst the audience. Some start to laugh.]

THOMAS
[ Well I hope you can prove it. ]

Basilica della Santa Casa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Basilica della Santa Casa (English: Basilica of the Holy House) is a shrine of Marian pilgrimage in Loreto, Italy. The basilica is known for enshrining the house in which the Blessed Virgin Mary is believed to have lived. Pious devotees believe that the same house was flown over by Angelic beings from Jerusalem to Tersatto then to Recanati before arriving at the current site.

Pope Benedict XV designated the Blessed Virgin Mary under the same title to be Patroness of air passengers and auspicious travel on 24 March 1920.

So far we have considered the relations between the authorities of the Church and Galileo in his capacity of a public figure in Italy, as they are reflected in documents of a more or less public or official character, including the letters Galileo wrote well knowing that they might easily become public property. It is much more difficult to get an impression of his everyday life as a member of his Church, since ordinary religious practice is usually not recorded in documents. Nevertheless, there are some testimonies which reveal what Galileo did as a private person and an ordinary member of the community of the faithful. [ Kerry's Blog Note: NOT "faith". THE FALSE HOPE OF CAVEMEN. ] Here there are both singular and common events to consider.

Among the singular religious acts the most interesting is his pilgrimage to the so-called House of Our Lady at Loreto in the Duchy of Urbino. Already in one of his weekly reports from Rome to Curzio Picchena in Florence on 1616 February 13 Galileo expressed his wish not to return directly to Florence after the Copernican process, asking permission to go to Naples and to visit the Santa Casa on his way back although he was not sure that his health would allow him to travel so widely. However, this application was rejected and Galileo returned directly to Florence.

It is a plausible assumption that the Medicean Court wished him to stay away from Naples at this critical time in order to prevent him from making personal contacts with Tommaso Campanella in his Neapolitan prison, something which might have drawn too much attention to his person so soon after the condemnation of the Copernican system of which Campanella was a staunch supporter.

Jean-François Champollion

FRENCH HISTORIAN AND LINGUIST

Jean-François Champollion, (born December 23, 1790, Figeac, France—died March 4, 1832, Paris), French historian and linguist who founded scientific Egyptology and played a major role in the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs.

At age 16 Champollion had already mastered six ancient Oriental languages, in addition to Latin and Greek, and delivered a paper before the academy of Grenoble, France, in which he asserted, incorrectly, that Coptic was the ancient language of Egypt. At 19, following studies in Paris, he became professor of history at the lycée of Grenoble (1809–16).

Deciphering hieroglyphs became his constant preoccupation. Following the modest success of the English physicist Thomas Young in attempting to decipher the Rosetta Stone, which was engraved with a Greek text along with hieroglyphic and demotic versions, Champollion at last began to piece together the puzzle of the hieroglyphs. In 1821–22 he started publishing papers on the hieroglyphic and hieratic elements of the Rosetta Stone, and he went on to establish an entire list of hieroglyphic signs and their Greek equivalents. He was first to recognize that some of the signs were alphabetic, some syllabic, and some determinative—i.e., standing for a whole idea or object previously expressed. Though many doors still awaited opening, the key to understanding ancient Egypt had at last been found. His brilliant discoveries met with opposition, however, often bitter and personal, from some other scholars.

Champollion became curator of the Egyptian collection at the Louvre (1826), conducted an archaeological expedition to Egypt (1828), and received the chair of Egyptian antiquities, created specially for him, at the Collège de France (1831). In addition to an Egyptian grammar (1836–41) and dictionary (1841–43), his published works include Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens (1824; “Primer of the Hieroglyphic System of the Ancient Egyptians”) and Panthéon égyptien; ou, collection des personnages mythologiques de l’ancienne Égypte (incomplete, 1823–25; “Egyptian Pantheon; or, Collection of the Mythological Figures of Ancient Egypt”).

Stargate: The Movie (1994)

HECKLER
Well, who do you think built the pyramids?

[Everyone stays silent, awaiting Daniel's answer.]

DANIEL
I don't have any idea who built them...I mean,

HECKLER
Men from Atlantis? Or Martians perhaps?

[People begin walking out of the room, laughing and scoffing with comments that can be overheard like "what a joke" or "which is the bigger myth?"]

DANIEL
The point is not who built them; the point is when they were built. I mean—we all know new geological evidence dates the Sphinx back to a much earlier period. And knowing this, I think, we have to begin to reevaluate everything we've come to accept about...

[Only one man in the front row remains. He awkwardly stands. Daniel steps off the podium to address him directly.]

DANIEL
I-I mean, I've been able to show a fully developed writing systems appeared in the first two dynasties, you know, which you know, almost as if it was based on an even earlier prototype.

[Catherine backs away. Daniel and the lone remaining man look around the now empty room.]

DANIEL
Is there a lunch or something that everybody...?

EXT—HOTEL ENTRANCE, DAY

[Rain pours down as Daniel, carrying two large suitcases, exits the hotel. He pulls his jacket's hood over his head to provide some protection and tries to cover his one suitcase with his coat. An uniformed man with an umbrella approaches from a car parked just outside the hotel.]

KAWALSKI
Doctor Jackson?

DANIEL
What? Yes?

KAWALSKI
Someone wants to speak with you.

INT—CAR

[Catherine flips through a file, which includes a diploma from UCLA, as the officer continues to talk to Daniel.]

DANIEL
The Air Force? What's this? What is this?

KAWALSKI
Could you step over to the car, please.

[Catherine glances over just as Daniel bends down and squints to look inside, while still several feet away.]

KAWALSKI
Sir?

DANIEL
Am I going somewhere?

[The car driver, also standing with an umbrella just outside the door, opens it for Daniel as he approaches.]

KAWALSKI
You're going to be fine. We'll take care of these.

[He takes Daniel's shoulder bag as Daniel cautiously drops his other suitcase and sits in the car. He warily looks at Catherine. She passes over a photograph of a smiling couple playing with a baby.]

CATHERINE
Jackson, are those your parents?

[Daniel glances from her to the photograph, his motion to lower his hood arrested for a moment.]

DANIEL
Foster parents.

[Catherine replaces the photograph and continues to look at the file.]

DANIEL
Wha-what is this all about?

CATHERINE
A job.

DANIEL
(with a nervous chuckle)
What kind of a job?

CATHERINE
Translation. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Interested?

[Catherine smiles at him. Daniel continues to look at her.]

DANIEL
I-I'm gonna go now.

CATHERINE
Go where?
(chuckles)
I mean, you've just been evicted from your apartment. Your grants have run out. Everything you own are in those two bags. Want to prove that your theories are right? This is your chance.

[She holds out an envelope, gesturing for him to take it. Daniel glances from her to the envelope before taking it.]

DANIEL
What's this?

CATHERINE
Travel plans.

[Daniel struggles to come up with a response, when the door opens. Daniel's still opening the envelope.]

KAWALSKI
Sir?

[Daniel looks back at Catherine, who gives him a small smile. He raises his hood again steps out of the car.]

EXT—HOTEL ENTRANCE, DAY

[The driver starts up the car while Daniel is still opening the envelope. Kawalski steps around him and gets in next to Catherine. The car drives off as Daniel looks at a plane ticket before looking back at the departing car.]

Admonition (Injunction?) of Galileo

(February 26, 1616)

The original admonition document is missing. A transcribed report exists in the Inquisition file. It is a key matter of dispute whether Galileo was actually enjoined from discussing Copernican theory, as the transcribed report--discovered in 1633--indicates. Scholars have questioned the authenticity of the report, arguing that the procedures described did not comport with established forms and that the substance was not consistent with what we know of events of 1616. (Translated from Latin.)

[The file report begins with a reference to the Pope's decree of February 25, 1616:]

Thursday, 25 February 1616. The Lord Cardinal Mellini notified the Reverend Fathers, the Assessor, and the Commissary of the Holy Office that the censure passed by the theologians upon the propositions of Galileo—to the effect that the Sun is the centre of the world and immovable from its place, and that the Earth moves, and also with a diurnal motion—had been reported; and His Holiness has directed the Lord Cardinal Bellarmine to summon before him the said Galileo and admonish him to abandon the said opinion; and, in case of his refusal to obey, that the Commissary is to enjoin on him, before a notary and witnesses, a command to abstain altogether from teaching or defending this opinion and doctrine and even from discussing it, and, if he do not acquiesce therein, that he is to be imprisoned.

Friday, the twenty-sixth. At the palace, the usual residence of Lord Cardinal Bellarmine, the said Galileo, having been summoned and being present before the said Lord Cardinal, was, in the presence of the Most Reverend Michelangelo Segizi of Lodi, of the order of Preachers, Commissary-General of the Holy Office, by the said Cardinal, warned of the error of the aforesaid opinion and admonished to abandon it; and immediately thereafter, before me and before witnesses, the Lord Cardinal being present, the said Galileo was by the said Commissary commanded and enjoined, in the name of His Holiness the Pope and the whole Congregation of the Holy Office, to relinquish altogether the said opinion that the Sun is the center of the world and immovable and that the Earth moves; nor further to hold, teach, or defend it in any way whatsoever, verbally or in writing; otherwise proceedings would be taken against him by the Holy Office; which injunction the said Galileo acquiesced in and promised to obey. Done at Rome, in the place aforesaid, in the presence of R. Badino Nores, of Nicosia in the kingdom of Cyprus, and Agostino Mongardo, from a place in the Abbey of Rose in the diocese of Montepulciano, members of the household of said Cardinal, witnesses.

Less than two weeks after Galileo received his admonition, the Church took the formal step of suspending or prohibiting publication and distribution of books suggesting that the Earth revolved around the Sun:

Decree of General Congregation of the Index

March 5, 1616

...And whereas it has also come to the knowledge of the said Congregation that the Pythagorean doctrine—which is false and altogether opposed to the Holy Scripture—of the motion of the Earth, and the immobility of the Sun, which is also taught by Nicolaus Copernicus in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, and by Diego de Zuniga [in his book] on Job, is not being spread abroad and accepted by many—as may be seen from a certain letter of a Carmelite Father, entitled Letter of the Rev. Father Paolo Antonio Foscarini, Carmelite, on the Opinion of the Pythagoreans and of Copernicus concerning the Motion of the Earth, and the Stability of the Sun, and the New Pythagorean System of the World, at Naples, Printed by Lazzaro Scoriggio, 1615: wherein the said Father attempts to show that the aforesaid doctrine of the immobility of the sun in the centre of the world, and of the Earth’s motion, is consonant with truth and is not opposed to Holy Scripture. Therefore, in order that this opinion may not insinuate itself any further to the prejudice of Catholic truth, the Holy Congregation has decreed that the said Nicolaus Copernicus, De revolutionibus orbium, and Diego de Zuniga, On Job, be suspended until they be corrected; but that the book of the Carmelite Father, Paolo Antonio Foscarini, be altogether prohibited and condemned, and that all other works likewise, in which the same is taught, be prohibited, as by this present decree it prohibits, condemns, and suspends them all respectively. In witness whereof the present decree has been signed and sealed with the hands and with the seal of the most eminent and Reverend Lord Cardinal of St. Cecilia, Bishop of Albano, on the fifth day of March, 1616.

1616 February A committee of consultants declares to the Inquisition that the proposition that the Sun is the center of the universe is absurd in philosophy and formally heretical and that the proposition that the Earth has an annual motion is absurd in philosophy and at least erroneous in theology.

Ex-excuse me. Wha-what are you doing?

DANIEL
That's not coffins.

[Daniel ignores Myers, crossing out the word "forever to eternity" and replacing it with...]

DANIEL
"For all time." Who the hell translated this?
