First and only time I have seen the International Space Station in the sky above the surface of the Earth.
And what's so compelling about this and is the reason I make this note is because the weather conditions really cooperated for me to make that observation on that specific day. I haven't been awake every day at sunrise but I often look at the weather conditions to know if I will have the opportunity to practice a camera shot I have been working at since I first thought to try it about a year ago.
So that one morning the conditions looked very good. That's happened before though only to have clouds form just as the Sun started to heat the local surface of the Earth. That almost happened on January 4th but apparently, as I will try to prove here, the atmosphere was too dry.
The sky this morning was cloudy. There's a possibility I could have seen it again if I tried but with a temperature of -2 degrees Fahrenheit registering on my balcony outside my apartment there was no way I was going to set the alarm clock for that time. Looking at out the sky from my bedroom I could see the conditions were not good on the 5th. I knew that snow is again in the forecast for days after the 5th.
I noted something interesting on the blog page of Cliff Mass the professor of meteorology at University of Washington in Seattle.
There was a distinct lack of moisture in the atmosphere above us that day. The absence was not present the day before or the day after. I won't try to describe where Spokane county is located on that map. There's really no point trying to educate you dullards and the Donkeys of Mediocrity that live inside your head. If Facebook has taught me anything in recent months is that I am baffled by just how many Americans in this country suffer from some serious delusions. People with low self-esteem can be convinced of almost anything.
And why do people insist on the archaic use of double-spacing after sentences. Yes, I took typing classes too but for blog posts I just don't see the point. I don't even know how to make double-spaces in my blog notes. I'm using Blogspot also and it automatically eliminates double spaces in sentences. I guess there could a configuration option for it but I can't recall ever seeing that option.

An invasion of very dry air that will crack skin, irritate throats, increase itchiness of the eyes and skin, and enhance the risk of colds and flu. Sparks will fly when you touch doorknobs and metal, and don't even think about getting near combustible or explosive substances.
What do we call this menace? El Arido.
The dry one.
The origin of El Arido is two fold: cold, dry arctic air has spread over our region, with easterly flow moving down the Cascades resulting in even lower humidities.
A plot of the surface air relative humidities at 8 PM Tuesday shows low values of around 30-40% over NW Washington to around 50-60% around central Puget Sound (click on plot to expand).

Atlantis (OV-104)
Background
Atlantis, the fourth orbiter to become operational at Kennedy Space Center, was named after the primary research vessel for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts from 1930 to 1966. The two-masted, 460-ton ketch was the first U.S. vessel to be used for oceanographic research. Such research was considered to be one of the last bastions of the sailing vessel as steam-and-diesel-powered vessels dominated the waterways.
The steel-hulled ocean research ship was approximately 140 feet long and 29 feet wide to add to [ its ] stability. She featured a crew of 17 and room for five scientists. The research personnel worked in two onboard laboratories, examining water samples and marine life brought to the surface by two large winches from thousands of feet below the surface. The water samples taken at different depths varied in temperature, providing clues to the flow of ocean currents. The crew also used the first electronic sounding devices to map the ocean floor.
The spaceship Atlantis has carried on the spirit of the sailing vessel with several important voyages of its own, including the Galileo planetary explorer mission in 1989 and the deployment of the Arthur Holley Compton Gamma Ray Observatory in 1991.
In the day-to-day world of Shuttle operations and processing, Space Shuttle orbiters go by a more prosaic designation. Atlantis is commonly refered to as OV-104, for Orbiter Vehicle-104. Empty Weight was 151,315 lbs at rollout and 171,000 lbs with main engines installed.
Upgrades and Features
Atlantis benefited from lessons learned in the construction and testing of Enterprise, Columbia and Challenger. At rollout, its weight was some 6,974 pounds less than Columbia. The Experience gained during the Orbiter assembly process also enabled Atlantis to be completed with a 49.5 percent reduction in man hours (compared to Columbia). Much of this decrease can be attributed to the greater use of thermal protection blankets on the upper orbiter body instead of tiles. During the construction of Discovery and Atlantis, NASA opted to have the various contractors manufacture a set of 'structural spares' to facilitate the repair of an Orbiter if one was damaged during an accident. This contract was valued at $389 million and consisted of a spare aft-fuselage, mid-fuselage, forward fuselage halves, vertical tail and rudder, wings, elevons and a body flap. These spares were later assembled into the orbiter Endeavour. Atlantis was shipped to California to undergo upgrades and modifications. These modifications include a drag chute, new plumbing lines that configure the orbiter for extended duration, more than 800 new heat protection tiles and blankets and new insulation for the main landing gear doors, structural mods to the Atlantis airframe. Altogether, 165 modifications were made to Atlantis over the 20 months it spent in Palmdale, California.
