John Knudsen Northrop
John Knudsen "Jack" Northrop (November 10, 1895 – February 18, 1981) was an American aircraft industrialist. He co-founded the Lockheed Corporation in 1927. He was the founder and eponym of the Northrop Corporation in 1939.
In 1928, Northrop struck out on his own, founding the Avion Corporation, which Northrop was forced to sell to United Aircraft and Transport Corporation in 1930. In 1932, Northrop, backed by Donald Douglas of Douglas Aircraft, founded another company, the Northrop Corporation, in El Segundo, California. This company built two highly successful monoplanes, the Northrop Gamma and Northrop Delta.
By 1939, the Northrop Corporation had become a subsidiary of Douglas, so Northrop founded another completely independent company of the same name in Hawthorne, California, a site located by Moye Stephens, one of the co-founders. While working at this company, Northrop focused on the flying wing design, which he was convinced was the next major step in aircraft design. He produced a number of flying wings, including the Northrop N-1M, Northrop N-9M, Northrop YB-35, and Northrop YB-49. Shortly before his death in 1981 he was given clearance to see designs and a scale model of the B-2 Spirit which shared many of the design features as his YB-35 and YB-49 designs.

In the foundations of mathematics, Russell's paradox (also known as Russell's antinomy), discovered by Bertrand Russell in 1901, showed that the naive set theory of Frege leads to a contradiction.
It might be assumed that, for any formal criterion, a set exists whose members are those objects (and only those objects) that satisfy the criterion; but this assumption is disproved by a set containing exactly the sets that are not members of themselves. If such a set qualifies as a member of itself, it would contradict its own definition as a set containing sets that are not members of themselves. On the other hand, if such a set is not a member of itself, it would qualify as a member of itself by the same definition. This contradiction is Russell's paradox.
In 1908, two ways of avoiding the paradox were proposed, Russell's type theory and Ernst Zermelo's axiomatic set theory, the first constructed axiomatic set theory. Zermelo's axioms went well beyond Frege's axioms of extensionality and unlimited set abstraction, and evolved into the now-canonical Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (ZF).

Principia Mathematica
The Principia Mathematica is a 3-volume work on the foundations of mathematics, written by Alfred North Whitehead and Bertrand Russell and published in 1910, 1912 & 1913. It is an attempt to derive all mathematical truths from a well-defined set of axioms and inference rules in symbolic logic. One of the main inspirations and motivations for the Principia was Frege's earlier work on logic, which had led to paradoxes discovered by Russell. These were avoided in the Principia by building an elaborate system of types: a set of elements is of a different type than is each of its elements (set is not the element; one element is not the set) and one cannot speak of the "set of all sets" and similar constructs, which lead to paradoxes (see Russell's paradox).
The Principia is widely considered by specialists in the subject to be one of the most important and seminal works in mathematical logic and philosophy since Aristotle's Organon. The Modern Library placed it 23rd in a list of the top 100 English-language nonfiction books of the twentieth century.

HONOLULU - Democratic Rep. Cecil Heftel, who quit Congress to run for governor of Hawaii, lost his political gamble to Lt. Gov. John Waihee and saw an Election Day newcomer nominated to succeed him on Capitol Hill.
In a special ballot, Democratic state Sen. Neil Abercrombie was narrowly elected to serve the rest of Heftel's current term, which technically expires Jan. 3 but in practice will end when the 99th Congress adjourns Oct. 3.
Abercrombie received 42,031 votes to 41,067 for Republican Pat Saiki and 39,800 for Democrat Mufi Hannemann in the special election held alongside the party primaries Saturday.

Russell discovered the paradox in May or June 1901. By his own admission in his 1919 Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy "When I first came upon this contradiction, in the year 1901, I attempted to discover some flaw in Cantor's proof that there is no greater cardinal". His 1902 letter to Frege, announcing the discovery to Gottlob Frege of the paradox in Frege's 1879 Begriffsschrift, frames the problem in terms of both logic and set theory, and in particular in terms of Frege's definition of function; in the following, p. 17 refers to a page in the original Begriffsschrift, and page 23 refers to the same page in van Heijenoort 1967:
"There is just one point where I have encountered a difficulty. You state (p. 17 [p. 23 above]) that a function too, can act as the indeterminate element. This I formerly believed, but now this view seems doubtful to me because of the following contradiction. Let w be the predicate: to be a predicate that cannot be predicated of itself. Can w be predicated of itself? From each answer its opposite flows. Therefore we must conclude that w is not a predicate. Likewise there is no class (as a totality) of those classes which, each taken as a totality, do not belong to themselves. From this I conclude that under certain circumstances a definable collection [Menge] does not form a totality." .

WASHINGTON - Sen. Lloyd M. Bentsen of Texas said today he will give up the senior Democratic post on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee next year to seek membership on the Senate committee that oversees the federal space agency.
Bentsen's announcement came a day after Rep. Mike Andrews, D-Houston, won support of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee to leave the House space committee for a seat on the more prestigious Ways and Means Committee, a tax-writing panel.
Representation of Texans and Houston-area members on congressional science committees is expected to play a significant role in the support that Johnson Space Center receives in Congress and the administration.
The commerce committee has jurisdiction over the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as well as other scientific, telecommunications, aviation, business, trade and tourism legislation.
Bentsen said all those topics "are of vital interest to the economic future of my state" as Texas seeks to diversify its economy.
"Anyone who has witnessed the damaging effects that falling oil prices have had on our economy in recent months must realize that," Bentsen.
Steering and Policy voted unanimously Wednesday to recommend the two-term House member for a committee left vacant Friday by the resignation of Rep. Cecil Heftel, D-Hawaii. Heftel quit to run for governor of Hawaii.

HONOLULU - Democratic Rep. Cecil Heftel, who quit Congress to run for governor of Hawaii, lost his political gamble to Lt. Gov. John Waihee and saw an Election Day newcomer nominated to succeed him on Capitol Hill.
In a special ballot, Democratic state Sen. Neil Abercrombie was narrowly elected to serve the rest of Heftel's current term, which technically expires Jan. 3 but in practice will end when the 99th Congress adjourns Oct. 3.
Abercrombie received 42,031 votes to 41,067 for Republican Pat Saiki and 39,800 for Democrat Mufi Hannemann in the special election held alongside the party primaries Saturday.

It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

Dean Anderson Gallo (November 23, 1935 – November 6, 1994) was an American Republican party politician, who was a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing New Jersey's 11th congressional district for nearly ten years.
He had been nominated for a sixth term in 1994, but dropped out of the race on August 29, 1994, due to prostate cancer. He died at the age of 58 on November 6, 1994 — just two days before the election of his successor, fellow Republican Rodney Frelinghuysen.

Civil war
A civil war is a war in which parties within the same culture, society or nationality fight against each other for the control of political power.
Some civil wars are categorized as revolutions when major societal restructuring is a possible outcome of the conflict. In the United States, and in American-dominated sources, this war is the default "Civil War," with other civil wars noted or inferred from context.
