Admiral Green, Captain Bernstein, Mayor Tanzler, Senator Chiles, Congress. man Burke, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
First, I am deeply grateful for the warm welcome by Admiral Green and all of you from the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. I am most appreciative, on behalf of Mrs. Ford and myself, that so many of you have come out on a Sunday on this occasion.
As all of you know, I am in the process of having further very important meetings with President Sadat of Egypt. It is quite interesting, in my judgment, that I am meeting this afternoon with a man who represents a country whose history goes back literally centuries and centuries and centuries.
And at the same time, I am in a part of our country where we have some contrast between the old and the new. Jacksonville is a relatively modern city, historically, and certainly a very progressive city in our development of our great country.
But not far from here we have the oldest city in the United States--St. Augustine. So, in a relatively small part of this great country, we have a history that goes back from the very beginning and a community that represents. progress and tremendous enthusiasm and drive.
I believe this shows the diversity of America. And this diversity in this great country is one of our strengths as we meet the challenges both at home and abroad.
But we cannot, in this country, solve our problems at home or meet our commitments internationally if we don't have a strong national defense program. It is vitally important for peace that we have a national defense program second to none.
All of you at the naval air station in Jacksonville perform a great service in that regard. I know of the missions and responsibilities that you have here. You have the helicopter antisubmarine warfare unit that does a tremendous job. You have the long-range naval capability in the antisubmarine warfare area. You have nuclear-powered naval vessels.
This naval air station is a vital part of our total national security capability, and what you do here protects 214 million Americans. And on behalf of them, I thank you for your contribution.
A long, long time ago, I was a part of the Navy. I was very proud of that association for some 47 months. I learned a lot. I hope I contributed a little. But I know from firsthand experiences the trials and tribulations of serving in our uniformed services.
The men and women who serve do a superb job. But the wives and the children of men in service--Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard-are likewise making a great contribution, because I know of the sacrifices they make over the years in performing their part of this service. And' I thank them for what I know they do.
Let me say, in conclusion, that the meetings that I am having today and the ones that I had earlier in the week with President Sadat relate to a better and more peaceful world. But I can go and have these discussions, these talks from a position of strength, and all of you are a very vital and important part of that strength.
So, it makes my job easier, it makes our country more secure to know that we have people like you serving in our national security forces.

In law, especially criminal law, a motive is the cause that moves people to induce a certain action. Motive in itself is seldom an element of any given crime; however, the legal system typically allows motive to be proven in order to make plausible the accused's reasons for committing a crime, at least when those motives may be obscure or hard to identify with.
The law technically distinguishes between motive and intent. "Intent" in criminal law is synonymous with mens rea, which means no more than the specific mental purpose to perform a deed that is forbidden by a criminal statute, or the reckless disregard of whether the law will be violated.[citation needed] "Motive" describes instead the reasons in the accused's background and station in life that are supposed to have induced the crime.

The President. Well, it is with a great sense of pride, genuine pride in his accomplishments and long years of dedicated service to his country, that I announce that Bill Webster has informed me of his intention to retire as the Director of Central Intelligence. Bill will be leaving Federal service after 26 years on the Federal Bench, as Director of the FBI, and as Director of the CIA. And as a former DCI, I know the complex organizations and interrelationships that comprise our intelligence community. Bill has brought an integrity and effectiveness and a insight to the many intelligence-gathering operations of this nation. He has done a superb job.
A strong nation requires a strong intelligence organization. And Bill Webster has directed our efforts according to the guidelines that I set down at the beginning of this administration, that the CIA would have the single mission of providing intelligence to the policymakers of this government. And he's performed admirably. And that is a very important point -- intelligence, not trying to shape policy. There are those who think CIA should have a different role, but I believe Bill Webster has demonstrated the value of an intelligence organization that is professionally directed and purposely committed. It is invaluable in defending the security of America. I noticed what one of our coalition partners said -- the dependence on United States intelligence in the recent war.
In so many ways, he has performed with great distinction and the best -- the best in the sense of service to his country. And I hate to see him go. This was his choice, but I offer him my thanks and I offer him the thanks of a very grateful nation as he finishes this distinguished career in government and considers other avenues.
And he can say a few words now, and then I'll be glad to take just a few questions.
Director, we're going to miss you, pal. But you're not leaving right now. We're not going to let him go.
The Director. Thank you, Mr. President. I have many mixed feelings about this morning. There's never an easy time to go, especially when you are working for an organization that you believe in and for people that you believe in. It's been an extraordinary experience to have worked with you, Mr. President. I have worked with you and for you for the last 10 years, and I want to say before I comment further that I know a good thyroid when I see one. [Laughter]

Paula Corbin Jones (born Paula Rosalee Corbin on September 17, 1966, in Lonoke, Arkansas) is a former Arkansas state employee who sued President Bill Clinton for sexual harassment. Eventually, the court dismissed the lawsuit, before trial, on the grounds that Jones failed to demonstrate any damages. However, while the dismissal was on appeal, Clinton entered into an out-of-court settlement by agreeing to pay Jones $850,000.
The impeachment trial of President Clinton on perjury and obstruction of justice charges was based on statements he made during the depositions for the Paula Jones lawsuit. The specific statements were about the nature of his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, with whom he denied having a sexual relationship.
According to Jones' account that is no longer denied but also not confirmed by Bill Clinton under terms of the settlement, on May 8, 1991, Paula Jones was escorted to the room of Clinton, then governor of Arkansas, in the Excelsior (now Peabody) Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he propositioned her. She claimed she kept quiet about the incident until 1994, when a David Brock story in American Spectator told a lurid account, sometimes referred to as Troopergate, about an Arkansas employee named "Paula" offering to be Clinton's girlfriend. Jones filed a sexual harassment suit against Clinton on May 6, 1994, two days prior to the 3-year statute of limitations, and sought $750,000.00 in damages

William Hedgcock Webster (born March 6, 1924) is an American lawyer and current Chairman of the Homeland Security Advisory Council. Previously Webster was the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 1978 to 1987 and Director of Central Intelligence from 1987 to 1991. He was a former federal judge who ascended to the CIA after his successful coups against the New York mafia families while director of the FBI under President Jimmy Carter. Judge Webster is the only American to serve as both Director of Central Intelligence and Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Abstract
Holetschek noted that the number of observed comets varies as a function of the difference between the heliocentric longitude of the earth and that of the comet at the time of the perihelion passage of the comet on its first appearance. The statistics of 676 comets are analysed to assess the severity of the effect. It is found that it has a stronger influence on cometary orbital statistics than it does on cometary magnitude statistics.

2.5. Selection effects
By far the most important selection effect has to do with the comet's perihelon distance, by the simple reason that the larger q, the fainter the comet, as it is both more distant from the Earth and from the Sun. The rapid drop in the discovery rate for q > 2 AU is clearly shown in Fig. 2.7, though the discovery of distant LP comets is rapidly increasing in the last few years, in particular thanks to survey programs of near-Earth objects like LINEAR, NEAT and LONEOS. The observing geometry may also play a role in the potential discovery of a comet. The Holetschek effect is the best known one (e.g. Everhart 1967a,b, Kresak 1975). It was found by Vienna astronomer Johann Holetschek more than a century ago, and it is associated with the fact that comets reaching perihelion on the opposite side of the Sun, as seen from the Earth, as less likely to be discovered.

It is shown that all the large-scale irregularities in the spatial distribution of long-period cometary orbits can be explained by observational bias of a random distribution.

STS-75 was a United States Space Shuttle mission, the 19th mission of the Columbia orbiter.
The primary objective of STS-75 was to carry the Tethered Satellite System Reflight (TSS-1R) into orbit and to deploy it spaceward on a conducting tether. The mission also flew the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP-3) designed to investigate materials science and condensed matter physics.
The TSS-1R mission was a reflight of TSS-1 which was flown onboard Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-46 in July/August 1992. The Tether Satellite System circled the Earth at an altitude of 296 kilometers, placing the tether system within the rarefied electrically charged layer of the atmosphere known as the ionosphere.
STS-75 mission scientist hoped to deploy the tether to a distance of 20.7 km (12.9 mi). Over 19 kilometers of the tether were deployed before the tether broke. It remained in orbit for a number of weeks and was easily visible from the ground, appearing something like a small but surprisingly bright fluorescent light traveling through the sky.

Background
The show had a feud with the Bushes that eventually led to the idea for this episode. In the October 1, 1990, edition of People, Barbara Bush called The Simpsons "the dumbest thing [she] had ever seen"
On January 27, 1992, then-current President George H. W. Bush made a speech during his re-election campaign that reignited the feud between the Simpsons and the Bushes. At that point, family values were the cornerstone of Bush's campaign platform. So he gave the following speech at the National Religious Broadcaster's convention in Washington: "We are going to keep on trying to strengthen the American family, to make American families a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons". The next broadcast of The Simpsons was a rerun of "Stark Raving Dad" on January 30, 1992. It included a new opening, which was a response to Bush's speech. The scene begins in the Simpsons living room. Homer, Patty, and Selma sit on the couch. Bart and Lisa are sprawled on the carpet. They all stare at the television and watch Bush's speech. After Bush's statement, Bart replies "Hey, we're just like the Waltons. We're praying for an end to the Depression too."

Granny, thinking her family became frogs again, tells Drysdale how Dr. Klinger cured them before and takes five frogs she found in the pool (Jed, Elly, Jethro, Mark, and some neighborhood kid) to Klinger’s office, along with Jane. Granny leaves, and Jane tells Klinger the story behind it. Klinger has a way to cure Granny by showing her there is nothing to scuba diving. Miss Jane meets his wife, and they leave and Klinger meets the Clampetts. Granny sees the family return and
thinks the doctor made another miracle. She is told that he is going to go in the water, and runs to the pond and sees a frog, thinking its Klinger. So she tells his wife, who is his secretary, to kiss him. Granny leaves, Klinger re-enters, and Granny sees the two kissing, thinking the kiss worked.

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon is releasing seven names of 18 servicemen killed in the Panamanian invasion as their next of kin are notified. Here are the names released so far:
Cpl. Garreth C. Isaak, a Marine born on Dec. 28, 1966, and a native of Greenville, S.C. Isaak entered the Marine Corps on May 29, 1985.
Cpl. Ivan D. Perez, 22, of Pawtucket, R.I. Perez, an Army infantryman based at Fort Polk, La., entered the service in 1985.
Pvt. Scott Lee Roth, 19, of Killeen, Texas. He was a military policemen stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.
Specialist Phillip S. Lear, 21, Westminster, S.C. He was a infantryman based at Fort Lewis, Wash.

NASA MANAGERS DELAY STS-107 LAUNCH
NASA managers today temporarily suspended launch preparations for Space Shuttle Columbia until they have a better understanding of several small cracks found in metal liners used to direct the flow inside main propulsion-system propellant lines on other orbiters in the fleet.
Columbia's launch on STS-107, previously planned for July 19, will be delayed a few weeks to allow inspections of its flow liners as part of an intensive analysis that is under way.
Recent inspections of Space Shuttle Atlantis and Space Shuttle Discovery found cracks, measuring one-tenth to three-tenths of an inch, in one flow liner on each of those vehicles. Some of the cracks were not identifiable using standard visual inspections and were only discovered using more intensive inspection techniques.
"These cracks may pose a safety concern and we have teams at work investigating all aspects of the situation," said Space Shuttle Program Manager Ron Dittemore.

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc. will stop censoring its search results in China and may pull out of the country after discovering that computers hackers had tricked human rights activists into opening their e-mail accounts to outsiders.
The change-of-heart announced Tuesday heralds a major shift for Google, which has repeatedly said it will obey Chinese laws that require some politically and socially sensitive issues to be blocked from search results that are available in other countries
Google disclosed in a blog post that it had detected a "highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China." Further investigation revealed that "a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists," Google said in the post written by Chief Legal Officer David Drummond.

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc. will stop censoring its search results in China and may pull out of the country after discovering that computers hackers had tricked human rights activists into opening their e-mail accounts to outsiders.
The change-of-heart announced Tuesday heralds a major shift for Google, which has repeatedly said it will obey Chinese laws that require some politically and socially sensitive issues to be blocked from search results that are available in other countries
Google disclosed in a blog post that it had detected a "highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China." Further investigation revealed that "a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists," Google said in the post written by Chief Legal Officer David Drummond.

Google said on Tuesday that it had detected "highly sophisticated" cyber-attacks in mid-December on the Gmail accounts of Chinese human-rights activists, and that at least 20 other large companies from a wide range of businesses have also been similarly targeted.
The change of heart announced Tuesday heralds a major shift for the Internet's search leader, which has repeatedly said it will obey Chinese laws requiring some politically and socially sensitive issues to be blocked from search results available in other countries. The acquiescence had outraged free-speech advocates and even some shareholders, who argued Google's cooperation with China violated the company's "don't be evil" motto.

The Pentagon and NASA on Thursday successfully demonstrated a novel new way of placing small satellites into orbit, using a winged Pegasus rocket launched from an airplane.
The new technique is expected to give the United States an edge in the highly competitive global commercial rocket industry. It also will provide the Department of Defense and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration with a low-cost means of launching small military and scientific payloads.
The demonstration took place over the Pacific Ocean just off the California coast as a NASA-owned B-52 strategic bomber, flying at 40,000 feet, dropped the 41,000 pound, 50-foot-long Pegasus from its right wing just after 2 p.m. Houston time.
The slender rocket dropped 350 feet before its first stage engine ignited. The three-stage rocket then delivered its 440-pound payload into a 368-mile-high polar orbit within 15 minutes, erasing doubts that its stubby wings or lightweight structure would fail.
The success of the venture, which went from the drawing board of tiny Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp. to flight within two years, won the quick praise of Vice President Dan Quayle, who chairs the administration's Cabinet-level National Space Council.
"Today's Pegasus launch marks an important achievement for the emerging commercial launch industry," Quayle said by telegram. "This initiative holds great promise not only for the aerospace industry but for the U.S. space program as well.' "We said we could do it and we did it," added David Thompson, OSC's president and chief executive officer.
Thompson's company estimates the cost of a Pegasus launch at $6 million to $8 million, depending upon the volume of business it commands in the specialized small satellite market.
The new vehicle will not compete with NASA's space shuttle, the venerable Titans, Deltas and Atlases or the foreign-built Arianes, Protons and Long Marchs designed for much heavier, larger payloads and costing 10 to 20 times as much.
OSC and its partner in the Pegasus venture, Hercules Aerospace Corp. of Delaware, found a sponsor for the project in the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency.
DARPA, which paid $6.5 million for Thursday's launch, is a small Pentagon operation that fosters innovative, high-risk programs that are attractive if they can provide a strategic edge.
NASA provided the same B-52 that once carried the manned X-15 rocket plane aloft for test flights and control facilities at its Dryden Flight Research Facility at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.
Former space shuttle astronaut Gordon Fullerton commanded the crew of the B-52.
The aging bomber would be replaced by a modern jumbo jet like a Boeing 747 or McDonnell Douglas DC-10 for future launches.
Dubbed Pegsat, the Pegasus payload consisted of an experimental Navy communications satellite, an array of stress measuring devices and two canisters containing chemicals that will be released into the atmosphere.
The chemicals will produce an artificial "northern lights"over central Canada, allowing researchers to study upper atmospheric effects.

How Pegasus takees flight
A B-52, traveling about 660 mph at 40,000 feet, will release the Pegasus.

5. After 8 minutes 51.5 seconds, the third stage will be in orbit. A Navy communications satellite will be released while a NASA experimental satellite will remain attached to the Pegasus third stage.

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc. will stop censoring its search results in China and may pull out of the country completely after discovering that computer hackers had tricked human-rights activists into exposing their e-mail accounts to outsiders.
Google said on Tuesday that it had detected "highly sophisticated" cyber-attacks in mid-December on the Gmail accounts of Chinese human-rights activists, and that at least 20 other large companies from a wide range of businesses have also been similarly targeted.
The change of heart announced Tuesday heralds a major shift for the Internet's search leader, which has repeatedly said it will obey Chinese laws requiring some politically and socially sensitive issues to be blocked from search results available in other countries. The acquiescence had outraged free-speech advocates and even some shareholders, who argued Google's cooperation with China violated the company's "don't be evil" motto.
