The National Aeronautics and Space Administration embarks on a new era of planetary exploration this spring with the launch of Magellan.
Magellan will become the first planetary probe to be launched with NASA's manned space shuttle and the first U.S. planetary mission since 1978.
The $216 million probe, which will use radar to map the cloud-enshrouded surface of Venus, is set for an April 28 lift off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center aboard the shuttle Atlantis.
"This is really an exciting and important mission for planetary scientists," said Stephen Saunders, Magellan project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "We've been waiting a long time to get a close up look at Venus."
Venus is similar in size, mass and age to Earth. The geography is dominated by great mountains, riftlike valleys, expansive plateaus and rolling plains.
However, the similarity ends there. Surface temperatures on the planet measure 900 degrees Fahrenheit. Thick clouds of carbon dioxide and poisonous sulfuric acid swirl over the planet. An eerie red haze hangs over the horizon and severe lightning storms crackle through the atmosphere.
The Magellan mission, whose total price tag is placed at $530 million, will provide more imaging data to scientists than all previous planetary missions combined, NASA says.
Still, it will be a stern test of the space shuttle's suitability for planetary missions. Often, those flights require precise launch times to take advantage of rare favorable alignments between the Earth and the destination planet. The precise launch times might generate pressure to launch when safety conditions might not be at their optimum for the astronauts aboard.
The Magellan launch period extends for about a month, beginning April 28. The actual launch window on the 28th is just five minutes, which NASA now intends to meet. The window grows to 90 minutes at the middle of the period, still tight when poor weather can easily cause delays.
Weather delays, though, would be minor compared to the postponements of major planetary missions forced by the Challenger disaster of three years ago.
Still, the manned shuttle figures prominently in NASA's future planetary missions, which include those delayed by the shuttle accident.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Tuesday released a new space shuttle flight schedule that reflects a seven month delay in the long-awaited launch of the Hubble Space Telescope.
The launch of the massive, $1 billion telescope, which may provide dramatic photographic evidence that planets orbit neighboring stars, has been delayed from June 1989 until February 1990.
The space agency said the reason for Hubble's postponement was the lengthy delay in the launch of Discovery, the first post-Challenger flight; commitments to launch secret military payloads; and the desire to preserve rigid launch windows for several key planetary probes.
The new schedule reflects an April 28 liftoff of Atlantis, with the Magellan probe aboard, a spacecraft that will provide the most accurate mapping yet of the surface of the cloud-enshrouded planet Venus.

The United States' next shuttle launch is scheduled for November, but the trappings of publicity, crowds, fanfare and the bugle-blowing that characterized the Discovery flight will be missing.
The space shuttle Atlantis, officially STS-27, will lift off on a secret Department of Defense mission from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Fla., about the middle of November - the exact date remains unknown.
The Atlantis orbiter will fly again April 28, carrying the Magellan probe.

With two successful space shuttle flights behind it this year, NASA is preparing for seven missions next year, including the challenge of launching the Magellan probe to Venus within a five-minute window.
Magellan, which represents the first use of the shuttle to launch a probe to another planet, will make a 14-month journey to Venus, where it will circle the planet for at least 243 days, using radar to map nearly 80 percent of its surface.
The launch of the $530 million probe aboard the shuttle Atlantis may present NASA with its biggest scheduling challenge since the shuttle program resumed.
To meet the current mission plan, Magellan must blast off between April 28 and May 23. The launch is now set for April 28, when Atlantis must launch within a five-minute period to station itself in the most advantageous orbital position to deploy Magellan and its IUS booster.
The period could be extended to May 27

NASA eyes damage to shuttle tiles

NASA said Thursday it is forming an analysis team to look into the heavier-than-usual thermal tile damage sustained by the space shuttle Atlantis during its recent classified mission, but repairs are not expected to slow preparations for the spacecraft's next flight.
As many as 175 of the protective tiles, many of them concentrated on the right underside, may have to be replaced, according to the details of an inspection report made available Wednesday.
Atlantis touched down Tuesday at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., after a four-day mission in which its crew is believed to have deployed a secret military satellite.
"As far as the usual number of tiles that we would decide to scrap, we are looking at double that number," said spokesman George Diller at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. "The survey is under way, so we have not completed identifying definitely all the tiles that will be replaced."
Now at Edwards, Atlantis will be returned to the Kennedy Space Center early next week, where it will be prepared for launch April 28, with five astronauts and the Magellan Venus probe aboard.

NASA Wednesday pushed back the shuttle Discovery launch to mid-March, but on Friday will roll the spaceship to its Kennedy Space Center launch pad, where engineers will replace three main engine turbopumps.
The decision to change the pumps on the pad, with Discovery poised vertically, differs from the normal procedure of working on the orbiter's main engines while it rests horizontally in a hangar.
The procedures could prove a little risky for NASA, which plans to launch Atlantis with the high-priority Magellan probe to Venus on April 28.

They weren't even designed for a soft landing; the large probe had a parachute that was designed to cut loose at a certain altitude, and the small probes had no parachute at all. Survival to the surface was considered a bonus. All the entry probes survived the density of the Venusian atmosphere at least until impact, but only one probe survived for a significant period after impact.
The large probe was released on November 16, 1978 and the three small probes on November 20. All four probes entered the Venus atmosphere on December 9, followed by the bus.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration embarks on a new era of planetary exploration this spring with the launch of Magellan.
Magellan will become the first planetary probe to be launched with NASA's manned space shuttle and the first U.S. planetary mission since 1978.
The $216 million probe, which will use radar to map the cloud-enshrouded surface of Venus, is set for an April 28 lift off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center aboard the shuttle Atlantis.
"This is really an exciting and important mission for planetary scientists," said Stephen Saunders, Magellan project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "We've been waiting a long time to get a close up look at Venus."
Venus is similar in size, mass and age to Earth. The geography is dominated by great mountains, riftlike valleys, expansive plateaus and rolling plains.
However, the similarity ends there. Surface temperatures on the planet measure 900 degrees Fahrenheit. Thick clouds of carbon dioxide and poisonous sulfuric acid swirl over the planet. An eerie red haze hangs over the horizon and severe lightning storms crackle through the atmosphere.
The Magellan mission, whose total price tag is placed at $530 million, will provide more imaging data to scientists than all previous planetary missions combined, NASA says.
Still, it will be a stern test of the space shuttle's suitability for planetary missions. Often, those flights require precise launch times to take advantage of rare favorable alignments between the Earth and the destination planet. The precise launch times might generate pressure to launch when safety conditions might not be at their optimum for the astronauts aboard.
The Magellan launch period extends for about a month, beginning April 28. The actual launch window on the 28th is just five minutes, which NASA now intends to meet. The window grows to 90 minutes at the middle of the period, still tight when poor weather can easily cause delays.
Weather delays, though, would be minor compared to the postponements of major planetary missions forced by the Challenger disaster of three years ago.
Still, the manned shuttle figures prominently in NASA's future planetary missions, which include those delayed by the shuttle accident.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Tuesday released a new space shuttle flight schedule that reflects a seven month delay in the long-awaited launch of the Hubble Space Telescope.
The launch of the massive, $1 billion telescope, which may provide dramatic photographic evidence that planets orbit neighboring stars, has been delayed from June 1989 until February 1990.
The space agency said the reason for Hubble's postponement was the lengthy delay in the launch of Discovery, the first post-Challenger flight; commitments to launch secret military payloads; and the desire to preserve rigid launch windows for several key planetary probes.
The new schedule reflects an April 28 liftoff of Atlantis, with the Magellan probe aboard, a spacecraft that will provide the most accurate mapping yet of the surface of the cloud-enshrouded planet Venus.

The United States' next shuttle launch is scheduled for November, but the trappings of publicity, crowds, fanfare and the bugle-blowing that characterized the Discovery flight will be missing.
The space shuttle Atlantis, officially STS-27, will lift off on a secret Department of Defense mission from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Fla., about the middle of November - the exact date remains unknown.
The Atlantis orbiter will fly again April 28, carrying the Magellan probe.

With two successful space shuttle flights behind it this year, NASA is preparing for seven missions next year, including the challenge of launching the Magellan probe to Venus within a five-minute window.
Magellan, which represents the first use of the shuttle to launch a probe to another planet, will make a 14-month journey to Venus, where it will circle the planet for at least 243 days, using radar to map nearly 80 percent of its surface.
The launch of the $530 million probe aboard the shuttle Atlantis may present NASA with its biggest scheduling challenge since the shuttle program resumed.
To meet the current mission plan, Magellan must blast off between April 28 and May 23. The launch is now set for April 28, when Atlantis must launch within a five-minute period to station itself in the most advantageous orbital position to deploy Magellan and its IUS booster.
The period could be extended to May 27

NASA said Thursday it is forming an analysis team to look into the heavier-than-usual thermal tile damage sustained by the space shuttle Atlantis during its recent classified mission, but repairs are not expected to slow preparations for the spacecraft's next flight.
As many as 175 of the protective tiles, many of them concentrated on the right underside, may have to be replaced, according to the details of an inspection report made available Wednesday.
Atlantis touched down Tuesday at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., after a four-day mission in which its crew is believed to have deployed a secret military satellite.
"As far as the usual number of tiles that we would decide to scrap, we are looking at double that number," said spokesman George Diller at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. "The survey is under way, so we have not completed identifying definitely all the tiles that will be replaced."
Now at Edwards, Atlantis will be returned to the Kennedy Space Center early next week, where it will be prepared for launch April 28, with five astronauts and the Magellan Venus probe aboard.

NASA Wednesday pushed back the shuttle Discovery launch to mid-March, but on Friday will roll the spaceship to its Kennedy Space Center launch pad, where engineers will replace three main engine turbopumps.
The decision to change the pumps on the pad, with Discovery poised vertically, differs from the normal procedure of working on the orbiter's main engines while it rests horizontally in a hangar.
The procedures could prove a little risky for NASA, which plans to launch Atlantis with the high-priority Magellan probe to Venus on April 28.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration embarks on a new era of planetary exploration this spring with the launch of Magellan.
Magellan will become the first planetary probe to be launched with NASA's manned space shuttle and the first U.S. planetary mission since 1978.
The $216 million probe, which will use radar to map the cloud-enshrouded surface of Venus, is set for an April 28 lift off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center aboard the shuttle Atlantis.
"This is really an exciting and important mission for planetary scientists," said Stephen Saunders, Magellan project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "We've been waiting a long time to get a close up look at Venus."
Venus is similar in size, mass and age to Earth. The geography is dominated by great mountains, riftlike valleys, expansive plateaus and rolling plains.
However, the similarity ends there. Surface temperatures on the planet measure 900 degrees Fahrenheit. Thick clouds of carbon dioxide and poisonous sulfuric acid swirl over the planet. An eerie red haze hangs over the horizon and severe lightning storms crackle through the atmosphere.
The Magellan mission, whose total price tag is placed at $530 million, will provide more imaging data to scientists than all previous planetary missions combined, NASA says.
Still, it will be a stern test of the space shuttle's suitability for planetary missions. Often, those flights require precise launch times to take advantage of rare favorable alignments between the Earth and the destination planet. The precise launch times might generate pressure to launch when safety conditions might not be at their optimum for the astronauts aboard.
The Magellan launch period extends for about a month, beginning April 28. The actual launch window on the 28th is just five minutes, which NASA now intends to meet. The window grows to 90 minutes at the middle of the period, still tight when poor weather can easily cause delays.
Weather delays, though, would be minor compared to the postponements of major planetary missions forced by the Challenger disaster of three years ago.
Still, the manned shuttle figures prominently in NASA's future planetary missions, which include those delayed by the shuttle accident.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Tuesday released a new space shuttle flight schedule that reflects a seven month delay in the long-awaited launch of the Hubble Space Telescope.
The launch of the massive, $1 billion telescope, which may provide dramatic photographic evidence that planets orbit neighboring stars, has been delayed from June 1989 until February 1990.
The space agency said the reason for Hubble's postponement was the lengthy delay in the launch of Discovery, the first post-Challenger flight; commitments to launch secret military payloads; and the desire to preserve rigid launch windows for several key planetary probes.
The new schedule reflects an April 28 liftoff of Atlantis, with the Magellan probe aboard, a spacecraft that will provide the most accurate mapping yet of the surface of the cloud-enshrouded planet Venus.

The United States' next shuttle launch is scheduled for November, but the trappings of publicity, crowds, fanfare and the bugle-blowing that characterized the Discovery flight will be missing.
The space shuttle Atlantis, officially STS-27, will lift off on a secret Department of Defense mission from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Fla., about the middle of November - the exact date remains unknown.
The Atlantis orbiter will fly again April 28, carrying the Magellan probe.

With two successful space shuttle flights behind it this year, NASA is preparing for seven missions next year, including the challenge of launching the Magellan probe to Venus within a five-minute window.
Magellan, which represents the first use of the shuttle to launch a probe to another planet, will make a 14-month journey to Venus, where it will circle the planet for at least 243 days, using radar to map nearly 80 percent of its surface.
The launch of the $530 million probe aboard the shuttle Atlantis may present NASA with its biggest scheduling challenge since the shuttle program resumed.
To meet the current mission plan, Magellan must blast off between April 28 and May 23. The launch is now set for April 28, when Atlantis must launch within a five-minute period to station itself in the most advantageous orbital position to deploy Magellan and its IUS booster.
The period could be extended to May 27

NASA eyes damage to shuttle tiles

NASA said Thursday it is forming an analysis team to look into the heavier-than-usual thermal tile damage sustained by the space shuttle Atlantis during its recent classified mission, but repairs are not expected to slow preparations for the spacecraft's next flight.
As many as 175 of the protective tiles, many of them concentrated on the right underside, may have to be replaced, according to the details of an inspection report made available Wednesday.
Atlantis touched down Tuesday at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., after a four-day mission in which its crew is believed to have deployed a secret military satellite.
"As far as the usual number of tiles that we would decide to scrap, we are looking at double that number," said spokesman George Diller at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. "The survey is under way, so we have not completed identifying definitely all the tiles that will be replaced."
Now at Edwards, Atlantis will be returned to the Kennedy Space Center early next week, where it will be prepared for launch April 28, with five astronauts and the Magellan Venus probe aboard.

NASA Wednesday pushed back the shuttle Discovery launch to mid-March, but on Friday will roll the spaceship to its Kennedy Space Center launch pad, where engineers will replace three main engine turbopumps.
The decision to change the pumps on the pad, with Discovery poised vertically, differs from the normal procedure of working on the orbiter's main engines while it rests horizontally in a hangar.
The procedures could prove a little risky for NASA, which plans to launch Atlantis with the high-priority Magellan probe to Venus on April 28.

Venus is similar in size, mass and age to Earth. The geography is dominated by great mountains, riftlike valleys, expansive plateaus and rolling plains.
However, the similarity ends there. Surface temperatures on the planet measure 900 degrees Fahrenheit. Thick clouds of carbon dioxide and poisonous sulfuric acid swirl over the planet. An eerie red haze hangs over the horizon and severe lightning storms crackle through the atmosphere.
The Magellan mission, whose total price tag is placed at $530 million, will provide more imaging data to scientists than all previous planetary missions combined, NASA says.
Still, it will be a stern test of the space shuttle's suitability for planetary missions. Often, those flights require precise launch times to take advantage of rare favorable alignments between the Earth and the destination planet. The precise launch times might generate pressure to launch when safety conditions might not be at their optimum for the astronauts aboard.
The Magellan launch period extends for about a month, beginning April 28. The actual launch window on the 28th is just five minutes, which NASA now intends to meet. The window grows to 90 minutes at the middle of the period, still tight when poor weather can easily cause delays.
Weather delays, though, would be minor compared to the postponements of major planetary missions forced by the Challenger disaster of three years ago.
Still, the manned shuttle figures prominently in NASA's future planetary missions, which include those delayed by the shuttle accident.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Tuesday released a new space shuttle flight schedule that reflects a seven month delay in the long-awaited launch of the Hubble Space Telescope.
The launch of the massive, $1 billion telescope, which may provide dramatic photographic evidence that planets orbit neighboring stars, has been delayed from June 1989 until February 1990.
The space agency said the reason for Hubble's postponement was the lengthy delay in the launch of Discovery, the first post-Challenger flight; commitments to launch secret military payloads; and the desire to preserve rigid launch windows for several key planetary probes.
The new schedule reflects an April 28 liftoff of Atlantis, with the Magellan probe aboard, a spacecraft that will provide the most accurate mapping yet of the surface of the cloud-enshrouded planet Venus.

The United States' next shuttle launch is scheduled for November, but the trappings of publicity, crowds, fanfare and the bugle-blowing that characterized the Discovery flight will be missing.
The space shuttle Atlantis, officially STS-27, will lift off on a secret Department of Defense mission from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Fla., about the middle of November - the exact date remains unknown.
The Atlantis orbiter will fly again April 28, carrying the Magellan probe.

With two successful space shuttle flights behind it this year, NASA is preparing for seven missions next year, including the challenge of launching the Magellan probe to Venus within a five-minute window.
Magellan, which represents the first use of the shuttle to launch a probe to another planet, will make a 14-month journey to Venus, where it will circle the planet for at least 243 days, using radar to map nearly 80 percent of its surface.
The launch of the $530 million probe aboard the shuttle Atlantis may present NASA with its biggest scheduling challenge since the shuttle program resumed.
To meet the current mission plan, Magellan must blast off between April 28 and May 23. The launch is now set for April 28, when Atlantis must launch within a five-minute period to station itself in the most advantageous orbital position to deploy Magellan and its IUS booster.
The period could be extended to May 27

NASA said Thursday it is forming an analysis team to look into the heavier-than-usual thermal tile damage sustained by the space shuttle Atlantis during its recent classified mission, but repairs are not expected to slow preparations for the spacecraft's next flight.
As many as 175 of the protective tiles, many of them concentrated on the right underside, may have to be replaced, according to the details of an inspection report made available Wednesday.
Atlantis touched down Tuesday at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., after a four-day mission in which its crew is believed to have deployed a secret military satellite.
"As far as the usual number of tiles that we would decide to scrap, we are looking at double that number," said spokesman George Diller at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. "The survey is under way, so we have not completed identifying definitely all the tiles that will be replaced."
Now at Edwards, Atlantis will be returned to the Kennedy Space Center early next week, where it will be prepared for launch April 28, with five astronauts and the Magellan Venus probe aboard.

NASA Wednesday pushed back the shuttle Discovery launch to mid-March, but on Friday will roll the spaceship to its Kennedy Space Center launch pad, where engineers will replace three main engine turbopumps.
The decision to change the pumps on the pad, with Discovery poised vertically, differs from the normal procedure of working on the orbiter's main engines while it rests horizontally in a hangar.
The procedures could prove a little risky for NASA, which plans to launch Atlantis with the high-priority Magellan probe to Venus on April 28.

Atlantis touched down Tuesday at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., after a four-day mission in which its crew is believed to have deployed a secret military satellite.
"As far as the usual number of tiles that we would decide to scrap, we are looking at double that number," said spokesman George Diller at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. "The survey is under way, so we have not completed identifying definitely all the tiles that will be replaced."
Now at Edwards, Atlantis will be returned to the Kennedy Space Center early next week, where it will be prepared for launch April 28, with five astronauts and the Magellan Venus probe aboard.

NASA Wednesday pushed back the shuttle Discovery launch to mid-March, but on Friday will roll the spaceship to its Kennedy Space Center launch pad, where engineers will replace three main engine turbopumps.
The decision to change the pumps on the pad, with Discovery poised vertically, differs from the normal procedure of working on the orbiter's main engines while it rests horizontally in a hangar.
The procedures could prove a little risky for NASA, which plans to launch Atlantis with the high-priority Magellan probe to Venus on April 28.

But first I thought I'd begin by giving you a little report on two stories that have been coming over the wires. They're what those of you in the newsroom would call developing stories that will be, I hope, a source of increasing focus and interest.

Q. Mr. President, Bill Sharp from WCSC in Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. President, to those people who might say your Presidency and you have been mortally wounded by the Iran-contra affair, how would you answer those people?

Thank you all very much. And Secretary Weinberger, Chairman Olch, Dean Sanford, members of the graduating class, and ladies and gentlemen, I must tell you before I start how relieved I was when Dean Sanford told me that I was going to walk on after the procession. I thought that I was going to come in with the dean, and with his reputation, I'd been afraid that the good news was that we might perch on the backstage rafters and rappel in— [laughter] —and the bad news, that we'd jump from 10,000 feet. [Laughter] But it's a pleasure to be here to welcome you the graduates of this the West Point and Annapolis and Colorado Springs for physicians into your new profession as military and Public Health Service doctors.
When I hear about the can-do spirit of America's doctors in uniform, it reminds me of a story about a group of marines. I hope those of you in the other services will forgive me for telling this, but the get-it-done spirit applies to all of America's physicians in uniform. These marines had been sent to the Army airborne school for training. And came the day for the first jump, the training officer told them that the planes would come in at 1,500 feet, they would jump from the plane, hit the ground, and move south. The marines seemed a little disturbed by this, and they went into a huddle. Then one of them as a spokesman for the group went to the officer and asked couldn't the plane come in at 500 feet instead of 1,500? And the officer explained that if they took the plane in too low, it wouldn't give them time for the parachutes to open. And he said, "Oh, you mean we're wearing parachutes?" [Laughter]
A quarter century ago, Douglas MacArthur gave his farewell address to the Long Gray Line, the cadets of West Point. He stood in the vast hall of the academy, below the balcony they call the poop deck, and spoke about the soul, not just of the Army but of all the services that you now enter. "The Long Gray Line," he said, "has never failed us. Were you to do so, a million ghosts in olive drab, in brown khaki, in blue and gray would rise from their white crosses thundering those magic words: duty, honor, country."
Duty, honor, country—the motto of West Point. And like the men and women of West Point and all of our military institutions, our physicians in uniform have never failed us. They've been ready when called; ready for hardship and sacrifice, for adventure and exploration; ready to extend the hand of compassion and healing care; ready, if called, to give the last full measure of their devotion. NASA targets next shuttle flight for Feb. 18,1988

If all goes according to the NASA schedule released Friday, the shuttle Discovery will blast off from the Kennedy Space Center with a tracking and data relay satellite on Feb. 18, 1988, marking the agency's first mission since the Challenger accident.
NASA Administrator James Fletcher and shuttle chief Rear Adm. Richard Truly announced the major cargos and launch dates for 30 shuttle flights through early 1991 amid concern from the scientific community that a large share of those flights will be devoted to military payloads.
Atlantis is slated for launch May 26, 1988, and Columbia on July 28, 1988, with Defense Department payloads. Discovery will fly again Sept. 22, 1988, with another tracking and data relay satellite of the type lost aboard Challenger.
On Nov. 17, 1988, Atlantis will fly with the Hubble Space telescope, marking the first major scientific mission.
Crews for the first and subsequent missions were not announced Friday, but Truly said they may be before the end of this year.
The April 25, 1989, flight of Atlantis with Magellan, a probe which will radar map the surface of Venus.

Big Bang
The Big Bang is the cosmological model of the initial conditions and subsequent development of the Universe that is supported by the most comprehensive and accurate explanations from current scientific evidence and observation. As used by cosmologists, the term Big Bang generally refers to the idea that the Universe has expanded from a primordial hot and dense initial condition at some finite time in the past (best available measurements in 2009 suggest that the initial conditions occurred around 13.3 to 13.9 billion years ago), and continues to expand to this day.
Georges Lemaître proposed what became known as the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe, although he called it his "hypothesis of the primeval atom". The framework for the model relies on Albert Einstein's general relativity and on simplifying assumptions (such as homogeneity and isotropy of space). The governing equations had been formulated by Alexander Friedmann. After Edwin Hubble discovered in 1929 that the distances to far away galaxies were generally proportional to their redshifts, as suggested by Lemaître in 1927, this observation was taken to indicate that all very distant galaxies and clusters have an apparent velocity directly away from our vantage point: the farther away, the higher the apparent velocity. If the distance between galaxy clusters is increasing today, everything must have been closer together in the past.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration embarks on a new era of planetary exploration this spring with the launch of Magellan.
Magellan will become the first planetary probe to be launched with NASA's manned space shuttle and the first U.S. planetary mission since 1978.
The $216 million probe, which will use radar to map the cloud-enshrouded surface of Venus, is set for an April 28 lift off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center aboard the shuttle Atlantis.
"This is really an exciting and important mission for planetary scientists," said Stephen Saunders, Magellan project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "We've been waiting a long time to get a close up look at Venus."
Venus is similar in size, mass and age to Earth. The geography is dominated by great mountains, riftlike valleys, expansive plateaus and rolling plains.
However, the similarity ends there. Surface temperatures on the planet measure 900 degrees Fahrenheit. Thick clouds of carbon dioxide and poisonous sulfuric acid swirl over the planet. An eerie red haze hangs over the horizon and severe lightning storms crackle through the atmosphere.
The Magellan mission, whose total price tag is placed at $530 million, will provide more imaging data to scientists than all previous planetary missions combined, NASA says.
Still, it will be a stern test of the space shuttle's suitability for planetary missions. Often, those flights require precise launch times to take advantage of rare favorable alignments between the Earth and the destination planet. The precise launch times might generate pressure to launch when safety conditions might not be at their optimum for the astronauts aboard.
The Magellan launch period extends for about a month, beginning April 28. The actual launch window on the 28th is just five minutes, which NASA now intends to meet. The window grows to 90 minutes at the middle of the period, still tight when poor weather can easily cause delays.
Weather delays, though, would be minor compared to the postponements of major planetary missions forced by the Challenger disaster of three years ago.
Still, the manned shuttle figures prominently in NASA's future planetary missions, which include those delayed by the shuttle accident.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Tuesday released a new space shuttle flight schedule that reflects a seven month delay in the long-awaited launch of the Hubble Space Telescope.
The launch of the massive, $1 billion telescope, which may provide dramatic photographic evidence that planets orbit neighboring stars, has been delayed from June 1989 until February 1990.
The space agency said the reason for Hubble's postponement was the lengthy delay in the launch of Discovery, the first post-Challenger flight; commitments to launch secret military payloads; and the desire to preserve rigid launch windows for several key planetary probes.
The new schedule reflects an April 28 liftoff of Atlantis, with the Magellan probe aboard, a spacecraft that will provide the most accurate mapping yet of the surface of the cloud-enshrouded planet Venus.

The United States' next shuttle launch is scheduled for November, but the trappings of publicity, crowds, fanfare and the bugle-blowing that characterized the Discovery flight will be missing.
The space shuttle Atlantis, officially STS-27, will lift off on a secret Department of Defense mission from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Fla., about the middle of November - the exact date remains unknown.
The Atlantis orbiter will fly again April 28, carrying the Magellan probe.

Magellan, which represents the first use of the shuttle to launch a probe to another planet, will make a 14-month journey to Venus, where it will circle the planet for at least 243 days, using radar to map nearly 80 percent of its surface.
The launch of the $530 million probe aboard the shuttle Atlantis may present NASA with its biggest scheduling challenge since the shuttle program resumed.
To meet the current mission plan, Magellan must blast off between April 28 and May 23. The launch is now set for April 28, when Atlantis must launch within a five-minute period to station itself in the most advantageous orbital position to deploy Magellan and its IUS booster.
The period could be extended to May 27

NASA eyes damage to shuttle tiles

NASA said Thursday it is forming an analysis team to look into the heavier-than-usual thermal tile damage sustained by the space shuttle Atlantis during its recent classified mission, but repairs are not expected to slow preparations for the spacecraft's next flight.
As many as 175 of the protective tiles, many of them concentrated on the right underside, may have to be replaced, according to the details of an inspection report made available Wednesday.
Atlantis touched down Tuesday at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., after a four-day mission in which its crew is believed to have deployed a secret military satellite.
"As far as the usual number of tiles that we would decide to scrap, we are looking at double that number," said spokesman George Diller at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. "The survey is under way, so we have not completed identifying definitely all the tiles that will be replaced."
Now at Edwards, Atlantis will be returned to the Kennedy Space Center early next week, where it will be prepared for launch April 28, with five astronauts and the Magellan Venus probe aboard.

NASA decides to push back Discovery launch until mid-March

NASA Wednesday pushed back the shuttle Discovery launch to mid-March, but on Friday will roll the spaceship to its Kennedy Space Center launch pad, where engineers will replace three main engine turbopumps.
The decision to change the pumps on the pad, with Discovery poised vertically, differs from the normal procedure of working on the orbiter's main engines while it rests horizontally in a hangar.
The procedures could prove a little risky for NASA, which plans to launch Atlantis with the high-priority Magellan probe to Venus on April 28.
