USS Nimitz CVN 68 bridge officer: Yes, sir.

US Navy Captain Matthew Yelland - USS Nimitz CVN 68 Commanding Officer: I want to talk to CINPAC Fleet.

USS Nimitz CVN 68 communications officer: Captain, we're down across the board. Antennas check out, but we're off the air.

US Navy Captain Matthew Yelland - USS Nimitz CVN 68 Commanding Officer: Any word from our destroyers?

USS Nimitz CVN 68 communications officer: We aren't getting anything except some code transmissions in the 200-meter band. Otherwise, we're dead as a doornail.

At the very vague start of the dream that I think I woke up from earlier today I think, as I have been trying to remember today, that Bill Clinton gave me an assignment that had something to do with trees and so with a certain sense of confidence I was standing next to a treeline and I knew that I could determine the height of the trees, which were soaring above me, by measuring the length of the shadow on the ground. There was another dream sequence before that of which writing the last sentence made me think of but I cannot now remember that earlier dream sequence although I might remember it later. One problem I noted with my activity to determine the height of the trees, which all seemed generally the same height, was that the shadow of the tree I was going to measure stretched across a busy highway or major roadway. There were not a lot of cars going past at the time but there were just enough that I would not have time to keep the tape measure from being run over by a car and I did not want that to happen. I worked at it for a while and then I was on the other side of the road and I am not certain if I did get the shadow measured correctly. There are other scenes on that other side of the road and then I noticed that I had lost track of the shadow. I seemed to be too far down the dirt road I had been working on and I had been looking at the road and there were ruts in the road and standing water and I remember that I was stretching the tape measure and I was concerned about something and that concern might have been about snakes but I never did see anything.

After I noticed that I had lost track of the shadow there are some other details I notice around then but I am not clear on what happened next. I should have walked back the way I came but I seemed to travel through the woods in a direction of travel perpendicular to where I had been. None of the surroundings are specifically familiar but at the end of the dream I knew where I was. I seemed to have walked through the woods and I walked back out to that paved road again, which I seemed to have traveled parallel to while traveling from east to west, and I was standing there looking back towards the north-east and I was looking at that office complex building

Pink Floyd Lyrics

Learning To Fly Lyrics

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Revelations

10:9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

10:10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.

10:11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.

11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

1991 film "Flight of the Intruder" DVD movie:

00:09:05

USS Independence CV 62 Commander Air Group: What altitude were you at when McPherson got hit?

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: Three hundred, 500, something like that. I'd just taken a gun out with a snake eye.

US Navy Commander "Cowboy" Parker - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron Executive Officer: Three hundred or 500? It makes a difference.

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: I don't know. I'm a little shaken up right now.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: You're what?

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: I said I'm shaken up, sir. I got Morg's blood all over me.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: Maybe we can stop the war till things get better then. Nobody asked you to stop the war, did they? Put McPherson's death behind you, Mr. Grafton. Right here, right now.

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: Yes, sir.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: Now, what altitude were you flying at?

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: Uh... Two hundred. 200 maybe A.G.L. I pushed the nose over, started a shallow dive in on the gun and leveled out. Some SAM's had tried us when we'd come in, and I wanted to... to get out of there low and fast.

USS Independence CV 62 Commander Air Group: You came out by a different route?

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: Yeah. Yes, sir. About 30 miles, I guess.

US Navy Commander "Cowboy" Parker - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron Executive Officer: Lucky small-arms fire.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: Hmm.

USS Independence CV 62 Commander Air Group: All right. Just bad luck, that's all. Just ran out of luck. Take Mr. Grafton off the flight schedule. You got liberty in Subic in a couple days. You need the rest.

US Navy Commander "Cowboy" Parker - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron Executive Officer: What was your target?

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: A suspected truck park.

US Navy Commander "Cowboy" Parker - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron Executive Officer: You hit it?

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: Oh, yeah, we hit it. Trees. A bunch of trees. There was nothing there again.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: What's your problem? Spit it out.

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: Well, I don't think trees in a suspected truck park is worth a man's life.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: Targets are picked for political consideration, Mr. Grafton, with the best intelligence we have available. You have any trouble with that?

“I have friends in college who are looking for summer work; I’m on an aircraft carrier," said Midshipman 2nd Class Chris Pogue of Chesapeake, Va. "I spent time with a SEAL [Sea, Air, Land] team last year. Not a lot of people get to do these things. I get to watch F-14s {Tomcats} land right next to me. How amazing is that?”

Aboard Kennedy, the 20-year-old was exposed to navigation, conning, chart work and engineering. His running mate, Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Paul Greenough taught the political science major a great deal about air traffic control at sea.
