Gut Sense

Q. Is it true that dietary fiber prevents or relieves constipation?

No, it isn‘t. As I already explained in my book, here, and pretty much elsewhere on this site, fiber from fruits, vegetables, grains, bran, and laxatives is the PRIMARY cause of chronic, persistent constipation and related colorectal disorders.

For those who are familiar with the large intestine‘s anatomy, it isn't difficult to comprehend why fiber‘s most heralded asset — its ability to bulk up stools — is complete nonsense. The fiber‘s journey inside the large intestine begins not by going down, but by going up, up, and up the ascending colon. And the weightier it is, the longer it takes, because the peristaltic propulsion inside the colon isn‘t strong enough to move up very heavy 'loads.'

This also explains how astronauts who spend months on end in the International Space Stations don‘t experience constipation, even though their stools are WEIGHTLESS. And when they do, they don‘t use fiber

The Stand - The Complete & Uncut Edition

And at the second table, near the end, there was a man who had been identified as Frank D. Bruce. His face was in a bowl of what appeared to be Campbell’s Chunky Sirloin Soup.

The first monitor showed only a digital clock. Until June 13, all the numbers on that clock had been green. Now they had turned bright red. They had stopped. The figures read 06:13:90:02:37:16.

June 13, 1990. Thirty-seven minutes past two in the morning. And sixteen seconds.

From behind him came a brief burring noise.

Starkey turned off the monitors one by one and then turned around. He saw the sheet of flimsy on the floor and put it back on the table.

“Come.”

It was Creighton. He looked grave and his skin was a slaty color. More bad news, Starkey thought serenely. Someone else has taken a long high dive into a cold bowl of Chunky Sirloin Soup.

“Hi, Len,” he said quietly.

Len Creighton nodded. “Billy. This… Christ, I don’t know how to tell you.”

“I think one word at a time might go best, soldier.”

“Those men who handled Campion’s body are through their prelims at Atlanta, and the news isn’t good.”

“All of them?”

“Five for sure. There’s one—his name is Stuart Redman—who’s negative so far. But as far as we can tell, Campion himself was negative for over fifty hours.”

“If only Campion hadn’t run,” Starkey said. “That was sloppy security, Len. Very sloppy.”

Creighton nodded.

“Go on.”

“Arnette has been quarantined. We’ve isolated at least sixteen cases of constantly shifting A-Prime flu there so far. And those are just the overt ones.”

“The news media?”

“So far, no problem. They believe it’s anthrax.”

“What else?”

“One very serious problem. We have a Texas highway patrolman named Joseph Robert Brentwood. His cousin owns the gas station where Campion ended up. He dropped by yesterday morning to tell Hapscomb the health people were coming. We picked him up three hours ago and he’s en route to Atlanta now. In the meantime he’s been patrolling half of East Texas. God knows how many people he’s been in contact with.”

“Oh, shit,” Starkey said, and was appalled by the watery weakness in his voice and the skin-crawl that had started near the base of his testicles sad was now working up into his belly. 99.4% communicability, he thought. It played insanely over and over in his mind. And that meant 99.4% excess mortality, because the human body couldn’t produce the antibodies necessary to stop a constantly shifting antigen virus. Every time the body did produce the right antibody, the virus simply shifted to a slightly new form. For the same reason a vaccine was going to be almost impossible to create.

99.4%.

“Christ,” he said. “That’s it?”

Chapter 4

It was an hour past nightfall.

Starkey sat alone at a long table, sifting through sheets of yellow flimsy. Their contents dismayed him. He had been serving his country for thirty-six years, beginning as a scared West Point plebe. He had won medals. He had spoken with Presidents, had offered them advice, and on occasion his advice had been taken. He had been through dark moments before, plenty of them, but this…

He was scared, so deeply scared he hardly dared admit it to himself. It was the kind of fear that could drive you mad.

2. Navy Cross

a. Authorization. 10 U.S.C. S6242.

b. Eligibility Requirements

(1) Awarded to individuals who, while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguish themselves by extraordinary heroism, not justifying the award of the Medal of Honor.

(a) While engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;

(b) While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or

(c) While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force, in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

(2) To warrant this distinctive decoration, the act or execution of duty must be performed in the presence of great danger, or at great personal risk, and must be performed in such a manner as to set individuals apart from their shipmates or fellow Marines. An accumulation of minor acts of heroism normally does not justify the award. The high standards SECNAVINST 1650.1H demanded must be borne in mind when recommending the award.

The Plague (1994)

[looking at the images of the virus outbreak]

Gen. Starkey: Look at that. It killed them in a hurry down there. Telemetry reports suggest that even the ones that managed to get their respirators and gas masks on died within 12 minutes after exposure. The rest were gone in less than five. Do you believe that?

Maj. Jalbert: Do I have a choice?

Gen. Starkey: No. Apparently none of us do. This 'Project Blue', it's nothing but a souped up version of the flu. Herbert Denninger of the Center for Diease Control in Atlanta, the Pentagon's bright boy of the week, says that once we find Campion, we'll only know if it's going to up to the outside. He says the virus will probally mutate as it passes from person to person, but that's not gonna help the people that catch it.

Maj. Jalbert: Sir, I have information that...

Gen. Starkey: [interrupting] It'll just take 'em longer to die, that's all. Most people are gonna think thay have the plain old non-lethal flu... right up to the very end, and that's the biggest break we've had so far. Now it's loose out there in the world all because a gate malfunctioned and some idiot, glorified TV repairman grabbed his family and ran for the hills. What I'd like to do more than anything else is get that [ guy ] and...

Maj. Jalbert: Sir, we found him. We located Campion. He crash-landed late last night at a gas station on the outskirts of a one-stoplight town in east Texas.

After I left Redmond Washington in February 2004 and moved to Spokane Valley, look at your maps if you want to know how to get there, I was living at a long-term hotel where I planned to stay until I found other employment and then I was going to rent an apartment. Just about every day I saw a chief petty officer in a khaki United States Navy uniform pass by my window. I guess they had him in the unit next door to mine. I saw him often enough that I identified the chief petty officer insignia on the shirt collar of his uniform.

They certainly went to great lengths to discredit me. I mean, am I not discredited even to this very day?

But hey, let's give the Devil some credit where credit is due. I was never a chief petty officer of the United States Navy.

Between 1990 and 1993 contiguously I was a chief warrant officer of the United States Marine Corps.

I commend the writers for that, but Neville’s escape was on the lame side of things. For starters, how the heck did he get that nail to break out of his cuffs? We already knew that he was going to break free because Rachel was so adamant that it was going to happen, so what harm would there have been to tip the hand and show when he picked up the nail? Unless it fell from the ceiling into his restrained hands I’m calling foul.

Then he went and killed the man who suddenly had a nickname this episode, as if having a more memorable moniker would make us more sympathetic to his end, stabbed

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_Washington,_D.C._riots

1968 Washington, D.C. riots

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Five days of race riots erupted in Washington, D.C. following the April 4, 1968 assassination of Civil Rights Movement-leader Martin Luther King, Jr. A wave of civil disorder affected at least 110 U.S. cities; Washington, along with Chicago and Baltimore, were among the most affected.

Military intervention

On Friday, April 5, the White House dispatched some 13,600 federal troops, including 1,750 federalized D.C. National Guard troops to assist the overwhelmed District police force. Marines mounted machine guns on the steps of the Capitol and Army troops from the 3rd Infantry guarded the White House. At one point, on April 5, rioting reached within two blocks of the White House before rioters retreated. The occupation of Washington was the largest of any American city since the Civil War.

Impact

By the time the city was considered pacified on Sunday, April 8, twelve had been killed (mostly in burning homes[citation needed]), 1,097 injured, and over 6,100 arrested. Additionally, some 1,200 buildings had been burned, including over 900 stores. Damages reached $27 million. This can be estimated to be equivalent to over $156 million today.

The riots utterly devastated Washington's inner city economy. With the destruction or closing of businesses, thousands of jobs were lost, and insurance rates soared. Made uneasy by the violence, city residents of all races accelerated their departure for suburban areas, depressing property values. Crime in the burned out neighborhoods rose sharply, further discouraging investment.

On some blocks, only rubble remained for decades. Columbia Heights and the U Street corridor did not begin to recover economically until the opening of the U Street and Columbia Heights Metro stations in 1991 and 1999, respectively, while the H Street NE corridor remained depressed for several years longer.

Walter Washington, who reportedly refused FBI director J. Edgar Hoover's suggestion to shoot the rioters, went on to become the city's first elected mayor and its first black mayor.
