Off-duty Calif cop helps airport agent in Honolulu

The Associated Press

HONOLULU —

An off-duty California police officer who came to the rescue of a security agent being assaulted at the Honolulu airport was praised by federal authorities as video of the incident was released.

Corporal Justin Rogers of the Pinole Police Department was on vacation and had just taken off his shoes to go through security on March 30 when he spotted the assault.

Security footage released on Thursday shows a woman hitting a female Transportation Security Administration officer and putting her in a headlock. Rogers jumped over a small wall and threw her to the ground.

Rogers identified himself to responding TSA agents and was given a pair of handcuffs to put on the suspect, Pinole police Cmdr. Pete Janke told the Contra Costa Times ( http://bit.ly/10CAkXx).

He wrapped up the arrest in time to make his flight back home.

"His actions, coupled with the quick response of airport security, minimized disruptions to the traveling public," the TSA said in a statement.

Lt. Michael Oakland, commander for the state sheriff's airport patrol section, said the woman is homeless and is known to frequent the airport and other areas.

Hawaii News Now reported the 43-year-old was taken to Castle Medical Center, which has a mental health unit.

Oakland said he was "very upset" the TSA released the video, however, since it's evidence in an active investigation. He's concerned a judge won't allow prosecutors to show the video in court because it's been released to the public.

"They've just blown our case," he said.

The TSA agent had gone over to stop the woman after she pushed over a security sign marking a lane reserved for pilots and staff, Janke said.

Rogers, a six-year veteran of the Pinole Police Department, "acted decisively, and was looking out for the other people around him. He did what we would expect a Pinole police officer to do," Janke said.

INT—ON SCREEN, MOVIE PLANET, DAY

MOVIE CHLOE
Don't you just want to run through it barefoot?

MOVIE SCOTT
Yeah.

MOVIE CHLOE
Be so beautiful.

[They clasp hands and move in to kiss. Suddenly the head of a serpent-like creature pops out of the ground. It turns its menacing head toward them.]

INT—CLOVA THEATER

[Scott gasps and moves in his chair as if terrified.]

CHLOE
Would you relax?

INT—ON SCREEN, MOVIE PLANET, DAY

[They start to back away.]

MOVIE SCOTT
Maybe not.

[More creatures emerge from the ground. They turn to run, and another creature pops up, blocking their path. Movie Scott grabs it by the neck and struggles with it. The creature stings Movie Scott on the left forearm. Movie Scott pulls out his knife and cuts off the creature's head. Its blood splatters, some of it spilling on Chloe's blouse. The blood is blue and spreads in the sand. Movie Scott's forearm has a huge blue pustule that grows as they watch it.]

INT—CLOVA THEATER

[Scott stands up.]

SCOTT
I'm sorry.

[He leaves.]

[Scott rushes in from the theater. He appears ill. Chloe comes after him.]

Matthew! What is wrong with you?

SCOTT
You don't remember any of that actually happening?

CHLOE
No — it's a movie!

[Scott and Chloe walk away from the theater.]

CHLOE
Did something happen to you over there that you want to talk about?

SCOTT
No, that was just some kind of weird déjà-vu. I'm over it, now. Hey, you want to go to Mr. Brody's for a bite?

CHLOE
Now?

RUSH
(casually)
So. Seven o'clock, then.

[Scott looks confused.]

RUSH
The "dearly beloved" business?

SCOTT
I'll be there.

RUSH
Your whole self, please.

EXT—ALIEN PLANET, NIGHT

[The kino flies over the planet. The organism is huge and spreading toward the 'gate, and numerous serpent-like creatures are protruding from it.]

INT—DESTINY GATE ROOM

[Park explains the kino footage to Brody and Young.]

PARK
What we can see above ground must only be a fraction of the whole organism. The bulk of it has to be like an enormous root system that extends outward from the flora, dormant until its prey gets close enough to get stung and survive just long enough to spread spores. I don't even want to think about what it could do aboard ship.

YOUNG
What do you think it is: plant, animal?

PARK
Maybe properties of both, like coral, except its growth rate smacks right up against the laws of thermodynamics. It spreads upon contact, and it resisted every chemical TJ's exposed to it.

INT—TUXEDO SHOP, CLOVERDALE

[Scott is lying on the floor. Paramedic TJ is checking his pupils with a flashlight. He wakes up.]

TJ
Hi, I'm Tamara, I'm a paramedic. Your friends called 9-1-1.

SCOTT
Why?

GREER
You were on the floor, Matt.

SCOTT
Why?

TJ
A lot of things can cause a syncope episode, but you don't have a fever.

ELI
He was hit by a car yesterday.

SCOTT
No, don't listen to him. That was nothing. I just had a little too much to drink last night.

TJ
You could be low on electrolytes.

SCOTT
Awesome — let's go with that.

TJ
Okay, well, just to be safe, I'm going take him to the hospital—

SCOTT
(getting up)
No, no, no, no, no. I'm getting married tonight, and I'm going to be there if they have to prop me up with a stick.

TJ
Lucky girl.

SCOTT
I just-I just mean, I'll be fine.

TJ
Up to you. Just do me a favor and have some chicken soup or something, okay?

[Scott smiles.]

TJ
(brightly)
Okay!

The flames bit him, and the hot smoke broiled his skin. His rifle barrel grew so hot that ordinarily he could not have borne it upon his palms; but he kept on stuffing cartridges into it, and pounding them with his clanking, bending ramrod. If he aimed at some changing form through the smoke, he pulled the trigger with a fierce grunt, as if he were dealing a blow of the fist with all his strength.

When the enemy seemed falling back before him and his fellows, he went instantly forward, like a dog who, seeing his foes lagging, turns and insists upon being pursued. And when he was compelled to retire again, he did it slowly, sullenly, taking steps of wrathful despair.

Once he, in his intent hate, was almost alone, and was firing, when all those near him had ceased. He was so engrossed in his occupation that he was not aware of a lull.

He was recalled by a hoarse laugh and a sentence that came to his ears in a voice of contempt and amazement. "Yeh infernal fool, don't yeh know enough t' quit when there ain't anything t' shoot at? Good Gawd!"

He turned then and, pausing with his rifle thrown half into position, looked at the blue line of his comrades. During this moment of leisure they seemed all to be engaged in staring with astonishment at him. They had become spectators. Turning to the front again he saw, under the lifted smoke, a deserted ground.

He looked bewildered for a moment. Then there appeared upon the glazed vacancy of his eyes a diamond point of intelligence. "Oh," he said, comprehending.

RUSH
I've figured out why the ship's been trying to conserve power. We're going to fall short.

YOUNG
Short of what?

RUSH
Our destination. The other galaxy. No matter how I do the sums, and to what degree I try and conserve power, Destiny won't make it across the void.

END TEASER

OPENING CREDIT

EXT—SPACE

[Destiny flies faster than light.]

INT—CONTROL ROOM

[Wray, Rush, Brody, and Volker are in the room.]

WRAY
But, we just passed through a star. We should be recharged.

RUSH
Yes, we did. But like everything else on this ship, Destiny's FTL drive and power reserves are nowhere near a hundred percent.

BRODY
Database says the ship barely made the last three or four intergalactic jumps.

RUSH
Recent battle damage couldn't have helped.

WRAY
But if the ship realizes that it can't make it, why is it trying?

RUSH
(sighing)
It's programmed to follow a predetermined path. Since we haven't managed to take control of the ship, our presence is secondary to that. Destiny will eventually drift the rest of the way, but our bones will be dust by then.

[Young arrives.]

YOUNG
So, what do we do?

RUSH
Well, I'm open to suggestions.

VOLKER
How much will we fall short?

RUSH
Fifty thousand light years, give or take.
