DISTINGUISHED MEMBER OF THE SPECIAL FORCES REGIMENT

COLONEL CHARLES A. BECKWITH

Inducted 9 August 2012

Col. Charles A. Beckwith, known as “Chargin’ Charlie,” was born Jan. 22, 1929 in Atlanta, Ga. He played football for the University of Georgia and was drafted by the Green Bay Packers; however, he turned down their offer to serve in the U.S. Army, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1952.

In 1958, Beckwith volunteered for Special Forces and was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C. In 1960, then-Capt. Beckwith deployed to Laos for two years on Operation Hotfoot, with the White Star organization. The covert White Star teams operated against the Pathet Lao and harassed the North Vietnamese on the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

In 1962, Beckwith was sent from 7th SFG(A) as the exchange officer to the British 22nd Special Air Service, where he commanded 3 Troop, A Squadron. It was during this tour, which included the conduct of counterinsurgency operations in Malaya with the British SAS, that Beckwith conceived, forged and developed his concept for an SAS-type unit in the United States.

Returning to 7th SFG(A) in 1963, Capt. Beckwith was selected to serve as a battalion and then the group operations officer. In 1965, Beckwith volunteered to return to Vietnam, where he was hand-picked to command the high-priority Special Forces unit code-named Project Delta (Operational Detachment B-52). He used his experience with the 22 SAS to test and select the right men to conduct long-range reconnaissance in South Vietnam. Following his promotion to major, Beckwith led B-52 in the rescue of the besieged Special Forces camp at Plei Me, under the most arduous combat conditions.

He was critically wounded in early 1966 (shot through his abdomen with a .50 caliber bullet). His wounds were so bad that medical personnel initially triaged him as beyond help. Recovering completely, he took over the Florida Phase of the U.S. Army’s Ranger School, transforming it from a scripted exercise based upon the Army’s World War II experience into a Vietnam-oriented training regimen.

In 1968, following the Tet Offensive, then-Lt. Col. Beckwith returned to Vietnam, taking command of the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry (Airborne), 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. For the nine months that he commanded 2-327 (“No Slack”), they saw many successes in combat operations, including: Hu, Operation Mingo, Operation Jeb Stuart, Operation Nevada Eagle and Somerset Plain (sweeping the southern portion of the A Shau Valley).

From 1973 to 1974, Lt. Col. Beckwith served as commander, Control Team “B” with the Joint Casualty Resolution Center located in Thailand. JCRC’s sole mission was to assist the Secretaries of the Armed Services to resolve the fate of servicemen still missing and unaccounted for as a result of the hostilities throughout Indochina. He was promoted to colonel, and in 1975 returned to Fort Bragg as the Commandant of the U.S. Army Special Warfare School.

As the threat of international terrorism increased, Beckwith was chosen to form the SAS- type unit he had promoted for several years. 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta was founded in November 1977 as a counterterrorist unit whose main missions were hostage rescue and specialized reconnaissance. As the ground force commander, Col. Beckwith led Delta on its first mission to Iran to rescue 54 American hostages. Later, the Joint Special Operations Command was formed, directly based on Beckwith’s recommendations during Senate investigations on the failed Iran mission to rescue hostages. Col. Beckwith retired in 1981 and formed a consulting agency based in Austin, Texas.

His awards and decorations include: the Distinguished Service Cross; Silver Star Medal (2 awards); Legion of Merit; Bronze Star Medal; Purple Heart Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge; Special Forces Tab; and Ranger Tab.

He died of natural causes on June 13, 1994, and his remains are interred in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas. Beckwith was married to Katherine Beckwith, and they had three daughters. Col. Beckwith’s contributions and leadership remain legendary as part of our Special Forces history and lore, including his conceptualization of the current selection and qualification courses and standards used by U.S. Special Forces today.

Col. Charlie Beckwith, 65, Dies; Led Failed Rescue Effort in Iran

During his time in Vietnam, he impressed his colleagues with his aggressiveness, single-mindedness and his greater interest in duty than in obtaining promotion. They nicknamed him "Chargin' Charlie."

"A lot of guys went to Vietnam just to get their ticket punched, but I only knew 10 or 12 who were 'certified' -- who were really going after it,"

The American Presidency Project

George W. Bush

XLIII President of the United States: 2001 - 2009

Remarks to the White House Press Pool in Midland, Texas

October 4, 2008

It's an amazing experience to come back to a place where you were raised. Laura was raised in Midland; I was raised in Midland. I was--this is one of the three homes I lived in, and I kind of remember it. [Laughter] The bedroom--actually, I do remember the wood on the wall that--in the bedroom.

You know, I love Midland, and Texas. We've got a lot of friends here. I learned a lot of values that I hold dear here. It's good to see mom's--Laura's mom here. And it's the first time I've been back here since I've been the President, and it's--it was just a very heartwarming experience.

You know, I've told my friends here, I said, you know, I'm not going to change as a person because of politics of Washington--that's what I said when I left. And I think they appreciate that. I want them to know that, you know, even though I had to deal with a lot of tough issues, that I'm still the same person that they knew before and that, you know, I'm wiser, more experienced, but my heart and my values didn't change.

And so it's great to see our friends. You know, we got a couple more hard months to go, and, obviously, we've got to deal with this financial situation. Congress took a big step in the direction of at least giving us the tools necessary to bring some stability into the marketplace. Got to get credit flowing, of course, so that people feel comfortable about conducting business. And so it's--there's a lot of work to be done. But it's--in the meantime, it's good to come back here to where it all started for us.

Anyway, thank you all. You're welcome to pay the fee to go in and see the house. [Laughter]

Note: The President spoke at 1:30 p.m at the George W. Bush Childhood Home Presidential site.

THE WHITE HOUSE

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH

For Immediate Release

Office of the Press Secretary

October 4, 2008

President's Radio Address

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This week, Congress passed a bipartisan rescue package to address the instability in America's financial system. This was a difficult vote for many members of the House and Senate, but voting for it was the right choice for America's economy and for taxpayers like you. I appreciate their efforts to help stop the crisis in our financial markets from spreading to our entire economy. And I appreciate their willingness to work across party lines in the midst of an election season.

The legislation Congress passed provides the necessary tools to address the underlying problem in our financial system. The root of this problem is that, as assets that banks hold have lost value, their ability to provide credit has been restricted, making it more difficult for businesses and consumers to obtain affordable loans.

Without decisive action, this credit crunch threatens to harm our entire economy. With this legislation, the Federal government can help banks and other financial institutions resume lending. This will allow them to continue providing the capital that is essential to creating jobs, financing college educations, and helping American families meet their daily needs.

Though the $700 billion dedicated to this plan is a large amount, the final cost to taxpayers will actually be much lower. Many of the assets that the government will be purchasing still have significant underlying value. As time passes, they will likely go up in price. And this means that the government should eventually be able to recoup much, if not all, of the original expenditure.

This package will also increase the safety of Americans' personal finances. For 75 years, the FDIC has provided insurance for savings accounts, checking accounts, and certificates of deposit. A similar insurance program is in effect for deposits in credit unions. And since these programs were instituted, no one has ever lost a penny on an insured deposit. The rescue package expands this protection by temporarily increasing the amount insured by the Federal government in banks and credit unions from $100,000 to $250,000. These steps should reassure Americans, especially small business owners, that their money is safe -- and it should restore confidence in the health of our banking system.

In addition to addressing the immediate needs of our financial system, this package will also help to spur America's long-term economic growth. This week, we learned that our Nation lost more jobs in September. Under these circumstances, it is essential for the government to reduce the burdens on workers and business owners. And that is why the rescue package includes relief from the Alternative Minimum Tax, which would otherwise increase taxes for 26 million taxpayers by an average of $2,200. And that is why it includes tax relief for businesses, which can use these savings to hire new employees and finance new investment.

By taking all these steps, we can begin to put our economy on the road to recovery. While these efforts will be effective, they will also take time to implement. My Administration will move as quickly as possible, but the benefits of this package will not all be felt immediately. The Federal government will undertake this rescue plan at a careful and deliberate pace to ensure that your tax dollars are spent wisely.

I know many of you listening this morning are anxious about the state of our economy and what it means for your personal finances. I am confident that the implementation of this relief package can begin to address those concerns. I'm confident by getting our markets moving, we will help unleash the key to our continued economic success: the entrepreneurial spirit of the American people.

Thank you for listening.

Plot Summary

Gandy Goose is helping test artillery by putting an apple on his head (to a swinging version of the William Tell Overture). The first shell is spot on. He backs up against a tree, and this shell comes in low, sending Gandy through a whole line of trees. The "dud" explodes, and sends both Gandy and his sergeant rocketing into the air. They land in a haystack; when all the insects greet them with "Heil", they figure out they're in Germany, conveniently near a piglike Hitler and his monkey, Mussolini.

The CIA Seal

The Colors

The seal is mostly red, white, and blue, just like our country’s flag.

The Eagle

The bald eagle is our national bird. It symbolizes strength and alertness. (Ben Franklin was a founding father. He wanted the turkey to be the national bird. But some of the other men in the Continental Congress voted no. Many of them probably didn’t like the idea of eating the national bird every Thanksgiving.)

The American Presidency Project

Harry S. Truman

XXXIII President of the United States: 1945 - 1953

Proclamation 2872 - "I Am An American Day", 1950

February 17, 1950

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

Whereas our country, built by people of many races, creeds, and national origins, has become a preeminent force in the furtherance of the cause of human freedom; and

Whereas our Nation now needs, more than ever before, citizens who know and understand our great heritage of democracy, which stresses the creed of the good neighbor, equality of justice, and equality of opportunity; and

Whereas it is vitally essential that each citizen, naturalized or native-born, reaffirm his faith in the basic principles that mold our way of life by forthrightly assuming and carrying out the obligations of citizenship:

Now, Therefore, I, Harry S. Truman, President of the United States of America, under and by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Congress through Public Resolution 67, approved May 3, 1940, do hereby designate Sunday, May 21, 1950, as "I Am an American Day", and do set aside that day as a public occasion for the special recognition of those of our youth who have become of age and of those foreign-born who have been naturalized during the past year. And I urge all Americans at that time to reaffirm their devotion to the ideals that have shaped our Nation's destiny and to faithfully resolve that they will discharge the obligations of United States citizenship.

I call upon Federal, State, and local officials, as well as patriotic, civic, educational, and other appropriate organizations and groups to arrange for suitable ceremonies on or about May 21, in which all our people may join with those who have newly assumed the responsibilities of American citizenship, with a view to promoting among all our citizens, old and new, a consciousness of their privileges and duties as Americans.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington this 17th day of February in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and fifty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and seventy-fourth.

HARRY S. TRUMAN

Alonzo: It's not what you know, it's what you can prove. Mark and Paul, you kicked the door down. Jeff's the first one through.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 11/03/10 6:09 AM
In that line of thought last weekend about Kerry Burgess, which all happened, I feel certain before I watched the premiere of the "The Walking Dead" television series, I thought over in my mind of the things he and I talked about. He was supposed to make contact with some group, which in some line of thought would immediately show up here and knock on the door and ask for him, while other times he would make the contact first to that group. We talked about the differences he could see from what he knew from 16 years ago and by far the greatest change are the flat screen monitors and television and we discussed some other technology details, such as flash drives, but not much else had really changed that much.

One consistent line of thought that I thought over several times probably over the course of about a day, was that he was the one who would drive me out to Tiger, Washington, and he didn't know why but that was what he was going to do. He made a call, got some transportation and we drove out through the night in a white Toyota pickup truck that I guess was the Tundra model. He didn't know why we were going there but when we got there, we stopped at that Riverside Cemetery. I walked out into the cemetery and the dead people started rising from under the ground and they were restored to the appearance when they died. They were mingling around and I talked to the first one and that dead person could not see Kerry Burgess as he stood near the pickup truck near the highway but that dead person could see a person who had wandered nearby and was looking at us.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: Journal June 12, 2006, Supplemental

There must be some reason to these thoughts [ , I think now having just awoken from sleep, ] I was having awhile back about the opening scenes to the upcoming movie HALO. I was thinking of how the story goes behind the military person that inspired Master Chief. It begins with the real MCPO arriving at his post on some planet. It is an isolated post in some kind of wasteland, desert, mountainous region. He arrives, talks with a few people, walks around. The structure is some kind of pre-fab building with a lot of walkways and observation positions, a lot of defensive positions. You can hear the clanking of deckplates and gratings as people walk around. MCPO finds a place to sit down his gear and look out over the land. He places a photo of an attractive blond woman, a weather forecaster, on a ledge in front of him and wistfully remembers better times. After awhile, he is sent on some kind of recon mission and climbs into an aircraft that is sitting on a landing pad a few levels above the other troops. The aircraft is some kind of advanced vtol craft and you can see some similarities in the window structure to a Seahawk helo. as MCPO pilots the craft up and starts moving out, he sees a large threatening group of one of the planets native species approaching. They move in a long, herd-like stream and he can tell that at their speed, they will definitely over-run the station. He immediately lands back on the pad and runs, with deckplates clanking, but leaving his weapon in the aircraft, and runs down to the main level and jumps over the ledge to the ground. He grabbed a couple of flares on the way out and starts trying to distract the herd towards him and away from the station. They are large cow-sized rat-looking creatures, that are fast, but at his peak speed, he can out run them but he isn't sure if they have greater endurance. He runs out and away for a while and then runs into a cave system that turns into a maze. He has some near-misses from the lead rats, but he manages to leap up onto a ledge and run in another direction although they manage to keep following him. He finds his way out of the cave and sees the station in the distance, thankfully he has bought them enough time to bring all the defenses online and there is a pretty chance they will be able to fight off the herd. As he run towards the safety of the station, he finds himself with one leg hanging over the ledge of a deep gorge, having almost run over the edge. He turns around that the herd is running flat out lemming-style towards him. He curses the rat-bastards just as the first one slams into him and drives him over the ledge along with all of them to their death a thousand feet below. Later, a group of marines venture out to dig him out from under that carcasses of the rats. One makes an off-hand comment about how he thought MCPO was invincible. The scene moves around MCPO as he is lying on the ground and you see a similarity in the shape of his helmet to the look of Master Chief in Halo. Then, the scene changes to the construction of Master Chief. I don't know what MC is constructed of, but if his smallest component are nuts and bolts, that is how this scene begins, of his smallest components being brought together through an automated process of construction. The musical theme is some form of classical music but I don't know of any work that would fit. It should match the crude start of his construction and them progress into some form of elegant theme, an artful dance. After MC is finished, he steps out of the construction chamber, the perspective changes to show that 11 other cyborgs, whatever they are, were being constructed at the same time. As the music score dramatizes the movements, they all step out, then the focus returns to MC. He turns his head to look into the camera and says "I need a weapon." Later, it is revealed that the camera recording all this construction of the cyborgs was actually one of the bad guys recording it all, a spy that had snuck in to the construction facility. The is a subtle difference to the scenes that can later be recognized as being seen through the eyes, or ocular devices, whatever, of the bad guy. It is only later that it is revealed that they special scenes were being seen by the bad guy and that you realize there were earlier scenes where he was watching. The scene changes to some military office. A company officer, I think that would be considered a Major, wants to see an Admiral. The Major appears to have just come from a battle or something, he has mud on him and his uniform isn't really presentable. He is arriving after enduring 12 hours of being trapped in an overcrowded, dark bunker with a blistering, fierce mortar barrage from the enemy outside trying to break the bunker and then he is on a transport, some kind of windowless conveyance that is also overcrowded and hot and filled with the maddening and endless quietly blaring Muzac while the civilians around him are blathering on with moronic idiotic conversations that he can't help but overhear no matter how much he wants to tune them out and there is a communication panel where he wants to send a message to his family because he can't remember the last time he talked to any of them but some moron is doing something moronic on it. He eventually barges into the Admiral's office and the scene is reminiscent in certain artistic elements to an ancient Admiralty environment, that type of environment that reminds me of HMS Pinafore, although I don't think I haven't actually seen that play. The Admiral and someone else are sitting around in some kind of stuffy, formal meeting, maybe even sipping tea with their pinky fingers extended, that seems to be a waste of time to the Major. He is frustrated because he lost several men in some kind of battle earlier. The Admiral doesn't want to be lectured because, as he points out to a machine across the room that is stamping his signature on death notices for next-of-kin, he is well aware of the loss. He tells the Major then that they are receiving a Master Chief unit in a few days to help turn the tide in their losing conflict. There are only 12 units so they are sent where they are most needed.

And you know, it used to be unthinkable to shoot a cop. And no longer -- Bob was telling me this upstairs -- no longer. Today narcotics agents are sometimes the first ones shot, targeted by criminals armed with a staggering array of battlefield weaponry. The explosive, expensive lesson of the past year in New York is that the rules of the game have dramatically changed.

H.V.O.M.

I am thinking of changing the title of my blog. The title "Homeless Veteran of Microsoft" made a lot of sense when I published my first post here on 30 August 2005.

After they kicked into that homeless shelter in Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle I deleted the content of my blog and that range was from 30 August 2005 to 24 September 2005. I didn't republish those postings but I still have text file backups of that worthless information from a time I was still hazed from that time the VA hospital doped me out of my mind.

All because I filed a police report.

Well, lately I have been given more thought to what that medical doctor told me in April 2004 when he told me I have a service-connected disability. I have always remembered that but only recently did I start giving some mental crunch to that phrase: service-connected disability.

Service-connected.

I remember sitting there in his office in that building in downtown Seattle, where I had passed the US Navy officer with the judge advocate general emblems on his tropical dress white uniform, uncommon for me to see a US Navy officer walking around in downtown Seattle and I've walked a lot on those sidewalks, and that doctor, I have been thinking again specifically recently, seemed to have been referring to a blog post I made on 15 September 2005 and that I titled "Series Finale." I wrote about getting hit on the back of the head by a group of thieves who wanted to steal the coins from my pocket.

I went on to describe to her some thoughts that I don't know why I was having about how terrorists would go after the most physically fit people in preparation for an invasion. Now that I think about, I now remember something I read about the Soviets planning something like that with pilots in a country, Norway I think, in preparation for a Warsaw Pact invasion of NATO. They kept track of all the pilots in their homes and then planned to murder them just before the invasion took place so they wouldn't be in the air to fight back.

The part about the fight, I think, reflects several events, including Vietnam, but reflects primarily my captivity as a POW in Libya in 1986 and they were beating me up to get me to admit I had led the strike on Iraq in 1981, which I never did admit. I have symbolic and artificial memories that suggest certainly that they put a noose around my neck and hanged me, or rather, strangled me. They could only get me tied up like that because they drugged me. Until then, a few of them went away with broken bones as they tried to tie me up. I thought of that when I saw a similar scene in the 1987 "The Running Man." They ran the power drill into my hand after I gave them my middle finger. The circular scar on my hand is right next to that knuckle. I have artificial memories of how I got that scar, so that means something. I "remember" it was a nasty wound and it bled a lot. I have some other scars that I don't have any artificial memories for, so maybe that means something to. If I have an artificial memory for a scar, then maybe that means I got that scar in combat. The scars that I don't remember where they came from were probably not from combat. There is a distinct scar about my right eye and I "remember" that Thedia told me I got that when I was very young and I was climbing out a window at the laundromat we were at and I cut it on the corner of a brick. I feel that it was actually from someone swiping a knife across my eye and it probably felt as though my eye had been cut out. I also find myself thinking a lot about a large, round scar on my shin of my left leg and I remember a scene from Mel Gibson's 2000 movie "The Patriot" and I remember a scene where a soldier gets his lower leg cut off by a cannonball. That is probably how it felt to me. It was probably a .50 caliber bullet. I said something to Langdon one day about me getting hit by .50 caliber bullets in the back and I wondered later why I said that.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: dated 2006

Damn, now some of the quips I've made over the past few years make sense. I was in the bathroom one day at work and a guy I went out drinking with sometimes walked in. For some reason, I made some kind of comment about not being able to get the blood off my hands. I didn't think much about it at the time, but it stuck in my mind. It takes on a whole new meaning now. I said something to that same guy one time, he had once been in some military academy before dropping out, about how I had taken some 50-caliber rounds in the back. I have no idea where that comment came from. It must have something to do with taking rounds in my aircraft because those objects on my back aren't big enough to be scars from 50-caliber bullets.

Returning to the beach, Charlie tells Jack and Locke what happened and that they need to go out and kill him. Locke disagrees, reminding Jack that Ethan bested him physically and hung Charlie from a tree.

[What did I write that time in my journal at Microsoft?: Something about how Microsoft doesn't need musicians running the company.]

when I found that large piece of jagged metal in my food at that teriyaki place in the Microsoft Bellevue building. I was sitting there with Lynn, Langdon, maybe Torbeson and others. I told them that I normally didn’t draw attention to stuff I find in my food, but they should take a look at that piece of metal.

I need to go check out that Museum of Flight, that might jog some memories.

Yesterday, I remembered something weird I said several years ago that seems especially relevant now. I was at dinner with Jon Langdon and his super-cute wife. For some reason that now seems really odd, for lack of a better word, I made a joke to the waitress about Langdon. I told her something about him being my youngest son from my third wife. Hell, he probably could pass for my son. I can't remember how old he is, probably too old, or maybe not. Don't know. But that is probably why he was there.

Sarajevo ! ?? What is it about Sarajevo??? That struck me as I saw something about it on the news today. I can remember thinking about Sarajevo back at Microsoft because I think Sharon was from Yugoslavia, or maybe not Yugoslavia, but somewhere nearby I think. It was somewhere that made me think of Sarajevo. I don't think she was from Sarajevo, but I don't know. I didn't really talk to her about it because my memory told me that I almost went to Sarajevo. When I left the Wainwright in Monaco, Dubrovnik was their next stop. Mogge told me later that it had been a nice place to visit but I was better off leaving the ship to head back to the States for my new job. As soon as I heard them mention Sarajevo, I'm not sure how to describe it. It feels like my mind got heavier, heavier with forgotten memories.

I started laughing and then I actually threw up into the sink, which is puzzling. My stomach felt all right and I don't understand what caused me to throw up.

That would have been 1999 when I flew down to Los Angeles one day to look at a large boat when I was wanting a large boat to live on. I remember how happy I felt driving through L.A. after I got there. The boat was I think 36 feet but it might have been 50 feet. I was looking for something in the 50 foot range but I can't remember if I was looking at that boat because it was 50 feet or if it was a 36 foot boat and in a price range I could afford. It was in sorry condition so I had no intention of buying it and I never did find anything else I could afford. I remember showing a photo of it to Jeff Johnson at work one day before I went down there. Somebody said it resemble the boat from "Gilligan's Island." It might have been Jon Langdon that said that but I can't remember if he was working there yet in that office in Bellevue although I think he started working there around that time.

I remember Jon Langdon was going on several times about watching "The A-Team" when he was younger. That probably means something, especially because I remember it. I remember him talking about that for a reason.

I haven't seen the movie, but I don't think it is a coincidence this guy who played Napoleon Dynamite looks a lot like my former co-worker at Microsoft, Jon Langdon.

Langdon is the guy who I quipped to the waitress something about him being my youngest son from my third wife.
