They examined my most memorable experiences and determined which features made the most impression, or imprint to my mind. Then, they substituted other events, possibly even real experiences, with those other events. The most memorable event was hitting that 9 point with my 35-caliber. I was standing there at my assigned spot listening to the dogs barking, knowing that something was going to happen in front of me. Micheal was off to my left a pretty good ways. I remember worrying a lot about that later because I remember thinking how stupid we were for not establishing rules on what to do if a deer jumped out in between us which was very likely. We were on that underground natural gas pipeline and I wasn't too far from where I got my red Ford stuck that time, although that incident happened much later I think. That corridor through the trees represents a specific place or maybe it symbolizes certain conditions or circumstances. Anyway, the 9 point glided in to my view from the right and then just stopped in front of me. I fired three times at it but missed. I'm not sure if those missed rounds actually represent misses or if it represents lack of discipline during combat.

SIR: Pursuant to the provisions of the Second Deficiency Appropriation Act, 1944, I have the honor to transmit herewith for the consideration of Congress proposed rescissions and provisions as set forth in the letter of the Director of the Bureau of the Budget, in whose comments and observations thereon

These recommendations are the result of the continuous review of the war and war related appropriations and authorizations which I indicated in my previous recommendations would be made.

Note: A White House release of June 10, describing the President's proposal, stated that the president had recommended repeal of appropriations totaling $3,089,436,596 and of contract authorizations $174,178,000, and that he had indicated the War Department would deposit in the Treasury $993, 098,585 of excess funds. The release also stated that these amounts were in addition to previous rescissions of $53,914,924,373 in cash and $4,674,706,880 in contract authorizations. The release added that the appropriations recommended for rescission included $1,138,258,365 for the civil agencies of the Government, $1,563,283,418 for the Military Establishment, and $387,894,813 for the Naval Establishment.

NASA recently marked the 45th anniversary of Apollo 10, the mission that served as the "dress rehearsal" for the first lunar landing two months later. The agency now is preparing to launch its first human-rated spacecraft capable of not only a trip to the moon, but beyond.

Apollo 10 was the fourth piloted mission in the lunar landing program, testing all the procedures and components without actually landing on the moon. The mission included an all-up test of the lunar module (LM) by the second crew to orbit the moon.

The veteran crew of Thomas Stafford, John Young and Eugene Cernan became the first to lift off Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 18, 1969.

As they arrived in lunar orbit three days later, the trio came from the back side of the moon and spotted their home planet rising above the moon's horizon.

"We just saw Earthrise and it was magnificent," Cernan said.

On May 22, Stafford and Cernan boarded the LM which they had named "Snoopy," after the Peanuts comic strip character. They undocked from the command module, named "Charlie Brown," leaving Young orbiting about 60 miles above the moon.

The LM's descent propulsion system engine was fired for 27 seconds, dropping down to a mere 47,400 feet above the lunar surface.

"We is down among 'em, Charlie," Cernan said to fellow astronaut Charlie Duke, serving as spacecraft communicator in Mission Control at the Manned Spacecraft Center (now Johnson Space Center).

On the next mission, the final powered descent to landing would begin from this altitude.

And I now understood to some slight degree at least the reason of the fear of the little Upper-world people for the dark. I wondered vaguely what foul villainy it might be that the Morlocks did under the new moon. I felt pretty sure now that my second hypothesis was all wrong. The Upper-world people might once have been the favoured aristocracy, and the Morlocks their mechanical servants: but that had long since passed away. The two species that had resulted from the evolution of man were sliding down towards, or had already arrived at, an altogether new relationship. The Eloi, like the Carolingian kings, had decayed to a mere beautiful futility. They still possessed the earth on sufferance: since the Morlocks, subterranean for innumerable generations, had come at last to find the daylit surface intolerable. And the Morlocks made their garments, I inferred, and maintained them in their habitual needs, perhaps through the survival of an old habit of service. They did it as a standing horse paws with his foot, or as a man enjoys killing animals in sport: because ancient and departed necessities had impressed it on the organism. But, clearly, the old order was already in part reversed. The Nemesis of the delicate ones was creeping on apace. Ages ago, thousands of generations ago, man had thrust his brother man out of the ease and the sunshine. And now that brother was coming back changed! Already the Eloi had begun to learn one old lesson anew. They were becoming reacquainted with Fear. And suddenly there came into my head the memory of the meat I had seen in the Under-world. It seemed odd how it floated into my mind: not stirred up as it were by the current of my meditations, but coming in almost like a question from outside. I tried to recall the form of it. I am assuming that the 9-point actually represents Osiraq and it didn't move in from my right, rather it was to my right and I maneuvered to line up on it. The deer standing there looking at me represents me moving towards the facility. I guess I either 3 of my 4 weapons missed or I missed on the first 3 passes before nailing it on the 4th. There were other aircraft on that raid, as I have read, so I guess they all made passes and hit their own symbolic deers.

There was some question about whether it was an 8-point or a 9-point but Amrus said that if you could hang a ring on the point in question, which we could, then it counted as an antler point.

In my artificial memory, for a long time, early '90s I think, I used the word "shrike" as a password. I think that was the missile they used in FOTI to destroy SAM sites before they went to the so-called "SAM City."

I had a single test for the pending legislation, and that's this: Would the CIA operators tell me whether they could go forward with the program, that is a program to question detainees to be able to get information to protect the American people? I'm pleased to say that this agreement preserves the most single—most potent tool we have in protecting America and foiling terrorist attacks, and that is the CIA program to question the world's most dangerous terrorists and to get their secrets.

Alex Butterfield Explains Why He Revealed the Watergate Tapes

On July 16, 1973, Alexander Butterfield pulled the plug on the Nixon administration by revealing the existence of the Watergate tapes. Butterfield was an Air Force reconnaissance pilot who served as chart-bearing assistant to Defense Secretary Robert McNamara during part of the Johnson administration. He resigned his commission in 1969 to accept a permanent White House post as presidential assistant, offered him by old UCLA classmate Bob Haldeman. He left the White House in March, 1973, to become chief of the Federal Aviation Administration—a politically sensitive job he held until March 31 this year. While working in the White House, none of his duties was more historically significant than overseeing the taping system. Reluctant to discuss his role in the undoing of Richard Nixon while still an administration official, Butterfield, 49, agreed to talk about it for the first time with Clare Crawford of PEOPLE.

How did you feel after you revealed the existence of the Watergate tapes?

The day after I testified, I was in London on my way to the Soviet Union for a meeting with Soviet aviation officials. I saw that my mother was quoted as saying she was very proud of me. To me it was a very serious issue. I didn't fancy myself a hero. I did wonder—and up until then there was no proof at all—if President Nixon was involved in Watergate. I sent a cable home saying, "Please, Mother, don't talk to the press. I'm not a hero." I was furious, and she didn't understand.

Have you heard from Nixon since his resignation last August?

Oh, no. I'm sure that he hates me as much as anyone can.

Were you forced out of your job as administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration last March?

I don't think there is any question about that. The White House acts as though it was voluntary, but I was asked to leave—and quickly. I wasn't allowed to stay until the confirmation of my successor, which is the normal courtesy. The White House wasn't concerned with the passage of a bill that would reinstate me on the retired rolls of the Air Force either. I gave up my commission unhesitatingly to serve as the FAA administrator. Sen. John Tower of Texas has introduced a one-paragraph bill that would simply reinstate my pension, and it's still before the Senate.

Why do you think you were asked to resign?

Right after I testified about the tapes I heard that there had been a meeting of three or four Nixon loyalists in the White House and the decision was, "Butterfield must go." President Nixon didn't survive, and I think they felt I should go too.

On July 26, 1972, NASA selected Rockwell's Space Transportation Systems Division in Downey, Calif., as the industrial contractor for the design, development, test and evaluation of the orbiter. The contract called for fabrication and testing of two orbiters, a full-scale structural test article, and a main propulsion test article. The award followed years of NASA and Air Force studies to define and assess the feasibility of a reusable space transportation system.

On July 26, 1972, Rockwell International won a $2.6 billion contract to build the space shuttle orbiter, designated OV-101 (orbiter vehicle 101). The first test shuttle, the Enterprise, rolled out Sept. 17, 1976. From Jan. 31 to Oct. 26, 1977, it used a Boeing 747, modified as a Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, to take it to the upper atmosphere for the approach and landing test program. The tests showed the orbiter could fly in the atmosphere and land like an airplane.
The Enterprise remained a test article. Its legacy of information was incorporated into the next shuttle, the Columbia (OV-102). On April 12, 1981, the Columbia was the first space shuttle to fly into orbit. During its 27 flights between 1981 and 2002, the Columbia's achievements included the first launch of satellites from a space shuttle, the first flight of the European-built scientific workshop called Spacelab and servicing the Hubble Space Telescope.

Two Cambridge University scientists have published their answer to one of the most fundamental questions of biology - how do living things reproduce themselves?

In an article published today in Nature magazine, James D Watson and Francis Crick describe the structure of a chemical called deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA.

DNA is the material that makes up genes which pass hereditary characteristics from one parent to another.

In short, it consists of a double helix of two strands coiled around each other. The strands are made up of complementary elements that fit together and when uncoiled can produce two copies of the original.

James Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work in 1962.

The discovery opened up some powerful and controversial technologies available today, including genetic engineering, stem cell research and DNA fingerprinting.
