PICARD: Commander, you must have been playing since you were young. I played the piano for a while when I was small, but I didn't put in the practice you must have.

NELLA: Practising was never my problem. In fact, my parents had to make me go out and play.

PICARD: I wanted to ask, during the second arpeggio in the first movement, I noticed that you played an F minor chord instead of a diminished D.

NELLA: You're a musician. What's your instrument? We should play some time.

PICARD: No, no, no, I'm just an amateur. But your choice in that arpeggio was delightful. Not at all what one would expect.

NELLA: Well, Captain, now that I'm on your ship, maybe you should start expecting the unexpected.

ELINE: You've been dreaming of that starship of yours again, haven't you?

PICARD: I'm just charting progress of the course of the sun. It might give a clue to the cause of this drought.

ELINE: I think you're still trying to figure out where you are. Where that ship of yours is. How to get back to that life.

PICARD: The memory is five years old now, but it's still inside me.

ROBERT: Why do you walk away? That isn't your style.

PICARD: I'm tired of fighting with you, Robert.

ROBERT: Tired?

PICARD: That's right.

ROBERT: Yes. Tired of the Enterprise too? The great Captain Picard of Starfleet falls to Earth, ready to plunge into the water with Louis. That isn't the brother that I remember. Still, I suppose it must have seemed like the ideal situation, hmm? Local boy makes good. Returns home after twenty years to a hero's welcome.

PICARD: I'm not a hero.

ROBERT: Of course you are. Admit it. You'd never settle for less than that and you never will.

PICARD: That's not true.

ROBERT: Cancel the parade? In your favour?

PICARD: No! I never sought that rubbish.

ROBERT: Never sought? Never sought president of the school, valedictorian, athletic hero with your arms raised in victory?

PICARD: Valedictorian? Arms raised in victory? Were you so jealous?

ROBERT: Yes, damn it. I was always so jealous, I had a right to be.

PICARD: Right?

ROBERT: I was always your brother, watching you receive the cheers, watching you break every rule our father made and get away with it.

PICARD: Why didn't you break a few rules?

ROBERT: Because I was the elder brother, the responsible one. It was my job to look after you.

PICARD: Look after me? You? You were a bully.

ROBERT: Sometimes. Maybe. Sometimes I even enjoyed bullying you.

Denzil commented on what a good shot I made on that 9-point deer I killed, I think that was 10th grade, which would have been around 1982 in my memory. I had actually missed it three times before I gave up on using the scope. Since I had raised sights on my rifle, I just switched to iron sights and nailed it. It probably went no more than a body length before it dropped. My mother was bragging to another mother whose son had shot a deer with fewer points. As I thought more about this event, I remembered some other details that leave me confused about what this event represents. One of the hunters that was out with us that day told me he had been scared because I had been yelling, screaming was the word that came to mind later, so loudly. As I remember it, it seems unusal that I was behaving like that, although it makes sense when I consider what a trophy, a glorious trophy, that deer was. Later today I was remembering my History teacher commenting on the bruises on my neck that one day, and then I started thinking about a photo of that deer hanging from a tree, soon to be skinned, with me next to it. That was off Highway 108 if I'm not mistaken, in front of Ambrus Chauncey's house.

In my symbolic and artificial memories, I believe that event is symbolized by a “memory” of me shooting a trophy deer once in my youth. I have written several times over the years about those circumstances in my journal. I wrote about how the deer was a 9-point buck and I shot it was a 35-caliber rifle. The “memory” of the deer dropping over after I hit it with the 4th bullet represents either the 4th bomb or the 4th jet dropping the dome of the non-fueled reactor. There was also some discussion about whether the deer was an 8-point or a 9-point because that 9th point wasn’t very big. One of the adults there hunting with us said that the 9th point counted because it was large enough to hang a ring on.

I forget the precise date. That must have been the year 1982. I am certain I showed you a Polaroid photo of it. I probably showed everybody at Ashdown High a photo of me standing next to that deer.

Anyway, the 9 point glided in to my view from the right and then just stopped in front of me. I fired three times at it but missed. I'm not sure if those missed rounds actually represent misses or if it represents lack of discipline during combat. For the fourth round, I gave up on using the scope, which was unnecessary really, and switched to iron sights and nailed it. It jumped up slightly into the air and then dropped, shifted, a little bit to my left.

CHAPTER XXV.

THE news was all over town in two minutes, and you could see the people tearing down on the run from every which way, some of them putting on their coats as they come. Pretty soon we was in the middle of a crowd, and the noise of the tramping was like a soldier march. The windows and dooryards was full; and every minute somebody would say, over a fence: "Is it THEM?"

And somebody trotting along with the gang would answer back and say:

"You bet it is."

When we got to the house the street in front of it was packed, and the three girls was standing in the door. Mary Jane WAS red-headed, but that don't make no difference, she was most awful beautiful, and her face and her eyes was all lit up like glory

THE KILLERS

"For Reasons Unknown"

I pack my case. I check my face.
I look a little bit older.
I look a little bit colder.
With one deep breath, and one big step, I move a little bit closer.
I move a little bit closer.
For reasons unknown.

I caught my stride.
I flew and flied.
I know if destiny’s kind, I’ve got the rest of my mind. [rest on my mind (sounds to me)]
But my heart, it don’t beat, it don’t beat the way it used to.
And my eyes, they don’t see you no more.
And my lips, they don’t kiss, they don’t kiss the way they used to, and my eyes don’t recognize you no more.

For reasons unknown; for reasons unknown.

There was an open chair.
We sat down in the open chair.
I said if destiny’s kind, I’ve got the rest of my mind.
But my heart, it don’t beat, it don’t beat the way it used to.
And my eyes, they don’t see you no more.
And my lips, they don’t kiss, they don’t kiss the way they used to, and my eyes don’t recognize you at all.

For reasons unknown; for reasons unknown.

I said my heart, it don’t beat, it don’t beat the way it used to and my eyes don’t recognize you no more.
And my lips, they don’t kiss, they don’t kiss the way they used to, and my eyes don’t recognize you no more.

For reasons unknown; for reasons unknown; for reasons unknown; for reasons unknown.
