Teen1: Yeah, nice try, narc.

Teen2: Where's a narc?

Teen3: Who?

Teen1: That fat Jamaican guy.

Homer: What did I say? What's going on?

Husband of 9/11 hero returns award after Caitlyn Jenner receives the same honor

Scott Stump TODAY 12 hours ago [ Retrieved 6 PM Monday 16 November 2015 Pacific Time USA ]

Fourteen years after his late wife received Glamour's "Woman of the Year" award for her courage as a New York police officer on 9/11, an outraged James Smith returned the honor after it was also given to Caitlyn Jenner last week.

Smith's wife, Moira Smith, died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks after repeatedly rushing into the south tower of the World Trade Center to evacuate dozens of people before it collapsed.

The 38-year-old was the only female NYPD officer killed in the attacks.

In an open letter to Glamour posted on Facebook, James Smith, himself a former NYPD officer, called Jenner's award a "slap in the face" and said he had mailed the award back to the magazine.

"Was there no woman in America, or the rest of the world, more deserving than this man?'' Smith wrote.

"At a time when we have women in the armed forces fighting and dying for our country, heroic doctors fighting deadly diseases, women police officers and firefighters putting their lives on the line for total strangers, brave women overcoming life threatening diseases...the list of possibilities goes on…is this the best you could do?"

Microsoft Launches Money 2001 – With Help from American Express

Posted August 14, 2000 By

REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 14, 2000 — Microsoft today released the newest version of its personal finance software, Money 2001 Deluxe. Many enhancements in this release of the product are based on contributions from American Express, which has been providing financial planning expertise for Microsoft Money since 1998. Money 2001 Deluxe is the third release of the product to which American Express has contributed.

To learn more about this alliance and how it has improved Money 2001 Deluxe, PressPass spoke with Rich Bray, general manager of the Financial Products Group at Microsoft, and Debra Rabe, vice president of Global Financial Advice at American Express.

PressPass: The ability to track finances was among the earliest selling points for personal computers at home. Is it fair to say that millions of people are managing their finances using their PCs and the Internet today?

Bray: If you look at the classic personal finance software like Money and Quicken alone, the number of users is anywhere from 15 million to 20 million. And on the Web, it has exploded over the past five years, primarily as a place for people to get help with their investment management. More and more, people are looking to the Web for assistance with other financial issues as well. So overall, there’s probably an equivalent number of people turning to the Web for personal financial management as well. It’s a huge number.

PressPass: Why has this been such a rapidly growing trend?

Bray: Before the Internet and connected PCs, personal finance software was primarily a set of bookkeeping tools, helping people keep track of where their money was going and handle accounting tasks. But now, with the Web and the ability to connect with any number of financial institutions, it becomes a much better way for people to handle transactions and do all the things they do with their finances every day.

Rabe: It’s critical, too, for any consumer to understand their overall financial situation, so the importance of connectivity is also in aggregating data from multiple accounts into one view. This makes it easier for people to get the overall picture of (a) their finances today and (b) where they’re headed in order to meet their long-term goals.

Bray: Over the past 10 years, there have been some real changes in the way people need to manage their personal finances. Things like 401(k) plans emerged and people started to have more control over their own retirement than they did in the days of pensions. Investing became a much more common scenario. Prior to the 1990s, a very small percentage of Americans actually invested. Now, the number of people who actively invest in the stock market is north of 40 percent. So it’s become much more of a mass-market issue.

And then we have increasing numbers of people who are in dual-income households or having to decide whether one parent stays home with the kids, plus a lot more job dislocation — it requires a level of financial planning that just wasn’t required in the past. So we knew we needed to adapt Microsoft Money to help people with this — because it was what they were really concerned about.

PressPass: Microsoft and American Express have collaborated on the past three releases of Money. How did this alliance come about?

Rabe: Microsoft came to us to help them on the content side. American Express has been doing formal financial planning with clients since 1979, and in fact we have a set of content experts as well as technology experts who have developed and built professional financial planning tools for our advisors. I think it was combination of those two areas of expertise that Microsoft was seeking to leverage.

Our content experts cover all six areas of financial planning and beyond, and because the decision was made to focus more on the financial planning tools within the product, they wanted to work with experts in that arena. The six areas, defined by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, include financial position, income tax planning, protection planning [i.e., insurance], investment planning, retirement planning and estate planning. None of these stands alone. A decision in one area can have a profound effect on any other area of planning. Our knowledge of these areas and how they interrelate is where we’ve been able to bring the greatest contribution to the Microsoft Money product.

Bray: We looked for a partner in this effort that had experience with a lot of customers solving these financial planning issues, and that we thought we could develop good working relationship with. The objective was to combine their expertise in financial services and face-to-face financial planning with our expertise in software development to create something that was greater than the sum of its parts. And that’s what we feel we’ve done with American Express.

PressPass: Doesn’t contributing to Money 2001 represent a conflict of interest for American Express, actually reducing the market for professional financial advice?

Rabe: We actually think it contributes to the market. If you dig into financial-industry data, our customers are using both types — computer-based software as well as turning to an expert. The fact is, we want to work with educated customers. As people look at their entire financial picture and see how the decisions they make are integrated across all areas of financial planning, they can see the total impact, and it often leads to the request for advice from an expert. So, for example, I can look at my income tax situation and perhaps make some adjustments, but it may have a negative impact on my retirement plan, or vice versa. Our goal is to continue to educate consumers to look at the comprehensive view.

Bray: And by making it easy for people to pull their information together and do some of the basic financial planning themselves, we enable them to interact with a financial planner in a much richer way. That focuses the planner’s time on giving advice — valuable direction — rather than spending a lot of time with the data-collection task of financial planning. So while there are some people who decide they can do their financial planning on their own using these tools, we think there are going to be a lot more people who start doing this and then realize there are areas where they do need that face-to-face assistance. Or the ability to interact with an advisor online, which is where we really think this category is going.

PressPass: In what ways do Microsoft and American Express each benefit from the collaboration?

Bray: In general, we both benefit from having the

PressPass: What improvements will customers see in Money 2001 that result from American Express’s contributions?

Bray: We’ve taken the input of American Express and literally sprinkled it throughout the product. In Money 2001, we have enhanced our Advisor FYI capability, which essentially is an automated guidance tool within the product. For example, if you have a mortgage you’re carrying at 8 percent and rates drop to a point at which you should refinance, the Advisor FYI feature alerts you and points you to additional tools within Money and on the Web to make that assessment.

Rabe: People will also see a new Asset Allocation section in Money 2001 that includes a simple, 7-point questionnaire that will help them assess their risk tolerance and the time frame for using their investment dollars. It will show their current portfolio versus a model portfolio, and give them an easy summary of how to move from their current portfolio position to the model.

Another feature is the Budget Maintenance tool, which incorporates
“found money”
concepts that we provided to Microsoft. Found money principles have been used by our advisors for several years to help people take a look at their current financial position — in other words, what they own, owe, earn, spend and save — look at that holistically and find ways to either increase what they earn or decrease what they spend in order to redirect that money toward their goals. Examples include refinancing or consolidating debt, modifying spending patterns, accepting different risk levels to increase rates of return, adjusting tax withholding and dozens of other options, depending on the client situation. These are a core part of the budget planner built into this new version of Money.

PressPass: Do these improvements differentiate Money 2001 from competing products?

Bray: I think it’s been a series of releases over the past three to four years, but Money 2001 is a nice
“exclamation point”
on how we’ve been expanding this category beyond bookkeeping and basic accounting to something that’s a total-health financial manager. Because the average household doesn’t just think about expense management anymore; they think about investing and asset allocation and they think about the types of things we’ve beefed up over the years in Money. So over time, people not only make sure they’re not bouncing checks, but they’re keeping their long-term planning in order as well.

I think we do that far better than any other product on the market, whether it’s a Web site or Quicken or another product. No product ties your day-to-day finances together with long-term financial planning considerations nearly as elegantly as the Money product does. And I think that’s the reason that over the past couple of years Money has emerged as the product that consistently wins reviews in this category. So market leadership will come. Quicken is a strong brand with loyal customers, so it’s not something that happens overnight.

PressPass: So what’s left to improve in Microsoft Money? Have we exhausted the opportunities to make financial management easier and more powerful for consumers?

Rabe: I don’t think we’ve exhausted it by any means. The goal is to make it easier and easier, and that means more and more automation. The first step toward that is aggregating all your financial information into one place. What I think of as sort of a virtual filing cabinet. Until we get all the industry standards in place and allow the consumer to control that automated process, we still have work to do and will continue to see improvements in the coming years. But I think the technology is there to start delivering.

Bray: If anything, I feel like we’re just now starting to get to a point where the technology infrastructure is in place to start doing incredible things for people to make their financial lives more convenient — automating the things that help them avoid the
“gotchas”
in long-term financial planning. A lot of the developments going forward are going to be around the Web, taking advantage of the connectedness of the PC, cell phone, handheld devices and other devices that are connected to the Web — devices that know who you are and that can authenticate you to other people, merchants and the companies where you pay your bills. We’re just scratching the surface on that today.

I also think the one area that’s going to be super interesting is enabling more of a financial planning market — an advice market — to exist than has been enabled in the past 20 years. Until now, to get financial advice and have a full service brokerage firm to serve you and focus on you, you had to be a very high-net-worth individual. We think the ability to automate certain pieces of advice — to get people into a system where they’re doing some of the pieces themselves, but they’re also able to rely on an advisor who’s looking at the same information — will, in a sense, democratize financial planning, bringing it to a much broader range of households.

PressPass: It sounds like this collaboration is going to last a while.

Bray: We’re very happy with the American Express relationship. Overall, the kind of give and take we’ve had over the years — the discussions, the time we’ve spent understanding each other’s organizations — have helped us build a real alliance and start to look to other opportunities we can build out together. These are the types of business relationships that Microsoft tries to build, and it has worked great with American Express.

Rabe: Indeed. We’re also very impressed that Microsoft has pulled together the best possible solution for the consumer, in terms of incorporating the highest-quality financial planning expertise, putting together the automated features that make it simple for them to manage their current finances while aiming at their future goals, and tying those together into this one product. It’s a unique experience to work with a company that’s coming from such a customer-centered point of view.

HISTORY

JANUARY 06, 2008 : DISNEY-MGM STUDIOS BECOMES DISNEY’S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

At the close of business on January 6, 2008, the Walt Disney World Resort theme park known as Disney-MGM Studios officially shut its doors after almost a decade of operation. Fans didn’t have to worry too much, however, as the park would reopen the next morning under its new name, Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Debuting on May 1, 1989, Disney-MGM Studios was the third theme park to open at Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, after the Magic Kingdom in 1971 and Epcot Center in 1982. The project began with an idea for a movie-themed pavilion, resembling a film soundstage, to be built at Epcot; it was later expanded into its own theme park, which now stretches over 135 acres. The name of the park was the result of a 1985 licensing contract between Disney and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio, which allowed Disney the right to use the MGM name and logo for a studio-themed park.

In its original conception, Disney-MGM Studios was to operate not only as a theme park, but also as a fully functioning television and movie production studio. Several feature films, including the lightweight comedy Ernest Saves Christmas (1988), were produced there before its opening as a theme park. This caused trouble with MGM, who filed suit against Disney in 1988 alleging that using the park as a working production studio violated the terms of their contract. Disney later countersued, and the case was settled in 1992. The verdict allowed Disney to continue using the MGM name and logo on films produced at the theme park facility and MGM to open a movie-themed theme park of its own, which it did in Las Vegas in 1993 (the park closed in 2000).

On opening day in May 1989, Disney’s then-president, Michael Eisner, dedicated Disney-MGM Studios to Hollywood, which he called “not a place on a map, but a state of mind that exists wherever people dream and wonder and imagine.” By 2007, the sprawling theme park was hosting close to 10 million visitors in six themed areas, including the “Hollywood Boulevard” main entrance; the Great Movie Ride, a tribute to classic films such as Casablanca; and a motion-simulator ride based on the Star Wars movies.

The American Presidency Project

Gerald Ford

XXXVIII President of the United States: 1974 - 1977

286 - Statement on Shooting Incident at the Soviet Mission to the United Nations.

April 2, 1976

I AM deeply disturbed by the gunfiring into the Soviet Mission to the United Nations that took place last night. This is the latest of a series of uncivilized acts carried out by the extremist groups who are acting in a spirit totally contrary to the American tradition. The people of this Nation are repelled by terrorism and demand that it end. It is ironic that those responsible for endangering lives, threatening children, and harassing women claim to have a concern for human rights. Manifestly, they do not.

I have instructed the Department of Justice to do everything it can in cooperation with the New York authorities to bring to justice those who have committed these vicious acts. I am confident that the New York authorities will cooperate in these efforts to the fullest degree.

New report: Doomed astronauts fought to save Columbia

Fliers' final moments on Columbia

Report details astronauts' efforts to save doomed shuttle and offers ways to avoid future losses of life

MARK CARREAU, Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle December 30, 2008

They were doomed already and did not know it.

Against all odds, the astronauts aboard the space shuttle Columbia tried to gain control of their shattered and tumbling ship in the seconds before they lost consciousness and died.

A pilot punched buttons on a control panel and tried to restart systems as the vessel — its heat shield shattered — violently spun, pitched and rolled some 200,000 feet above Texas, a little north of the Dallas area.

The crew performed courageously, trying to problem-solve their way to safety. But the Feb. 1, 2003, accident was not survivable, NASA said Tuesday in a new report that reconstructed the crash second by second and suggested changes to protect future crews. Within moments the crew was unconscious.

The detailed analysis of the craft's breakup and free fall by NASA's Spacecraft Crew Survival Investigative Team offered a sobering reminder of the hazards of human spaceflight.

Rick Husband, William McCool, Mike Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark and Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon succumbed to violent trauma as the crew compartment snapped away from the shuttle's body, and the life-sustaining oxygen inside rushed out through small but growing breaches in the walls above and below them.

Frank J. Wilson

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frank J. Wilson (May 19, 1886 – June 22, 1970) was the Chief of the United States Secret Service and a former agent of the Treasury Department's Bureau of Internal Revenue, later known as the Internal Revenue Service, most notably in the 1931 prosecution of Chicago mobster Al Capone and federal representative in the Lindbergh kidnapping case.

Capone investigation

Upon joining the United States Treasury Department's Intelligence Unit in 1920, the former accountant Wilson would earn a reputation throughout Prohibition as a thorough, if not obsessive, investigator of tax returns and income.

In 1928, Wilson was assigned by the chief of the Enforcement Branch of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Elmer L. Irey, to investigate mobster Al Capone in a later federal prosecution for tax evasion. Although earlier investigations regarding racketeering charges had been successfully defended by Capone, Irey believed Capone could be prosecuted under a 1927 ruling by the Supreme Court which declared that any income from criminal activities must be subjected to income taxes.

However, as Capone did not file tax returns, own property, endorse checks, maintain bank accounts or give receipts, his income could not be accounted for. As calculating Capone's net worth and expenditures were crucial to federal prosecutors, Wilson arranged to have Capone's organization, known as the "Chicago Outfit," to be infiltrated by federal agents to gather information on Capone's dealings in bootlegging, illegal gambling, and other vices.

Wilson himself moved into Chicago's Sheridan Plaza Hotel with his wife under the guise of a tourist. Wilson's wife was uninformed of the details of his assignment; instead she had been told that Wilson was investigating the finances of one "Curly Brown." Wilson would spend the next three years gathering information on Capone's financial dealings including tracking down mob accountants and bookkeepers.

Becoming aware of Wilson's investigation, a nervous Capone ordered five gunmen to murder Wilson. Federal authorities were informed of the contract and, after urgings from former mentor Johnny Torrio, Capone reluctantly canceled the hit. As a result of Wilson's investigation, which revealed millions of dollars in unreported income, Capone was eventually sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment.

The American Presidency Project

Ronald Reagan

XL President of the United States: 1981 - 1989

Memorandum on Brazil-United States Computer-Related Trade

June 30, 1987

Memorandum for the United States Trade Representative

Subject: Determination Under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974

Pursuant to Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, as amended (19 U.S.C. 2411), I have determined to suspend the intellectual property portion of the investigation of the Government of Brazil's acts, policies, and practices with respect to informatics (computer and computer-related) products. Further, I am directing the United States Trade Representative to pursue the investigation of barriers to U.S. investment in the Brazilian informatics sector. The two parts of this investigation that I suspended on December 30, 1986—on Brazilian administrative procedures and "market reserve" practices—shall remain suspended until terminated or reopened based upon developments in those areas.

Reasons for Determination

At my direction, the Trade Representative initiated this investigation in September 1985. Based upon favorable developments regarding Brazil's administrative procedures and "market reserve" practices, I suspended those parts of this investigation on December 30, 1986. I indicated that those parts of the Section 301 investigation could be terminated if the improvements on which the suspension was based were properly implemented and had the expected effect of reducing the burdens or restrictions on U.S. commerce. The Trade Representative will continue to monitor developments in this area, with a view to terminating or reopening these parts of the investigation as appropriate based on developments.

Last December 1 directed the Trade Representative to continue negotiations with the Government of Brazil to address our concerns regarding Brazilian restrictions on U.S. investment in the informatics sector and the lack of adequate and effective protection for intellectual property, including computer software. Recently the Government of Brazil's lower house passed legislation that, we believe, would provide adequate copyright protection to computer software. Although enactment of this legislation still requires favorable action by the upper house, progress to date and the likely enactment of legislation adequately protecting computer software from piracy warrants suspension of the intellectual property portion of this investigation. The Trade Representative will continue to monitor developments in this area as well, with a view to terminating or reopening this part of the investigation as appropriate based on developments.

Regarding the Government of Brazil's restrictions on U.S. investment in the informatics sector, we have been asked to judge its performance in this area based upon a favorable "track record" in approving U.S. investment proposals. I am directing the Trade Representative to pursue this part of the Section 301 investigation as appropriate.

This determination shall be published in the Federal Register.

RONALD REAGAN

The American Presidency Project

Lyndon B. Johnson

XXXVI President of the United States: 1963-1969

141 - Remarks at a Meeting of the National Alliance of Businessmen.

March 16, 1968

Mr. Ford, Mr. Austin, distinguished Mayors, Mr. Meany, Mr. Young, Mr. Smith, members of the Alliance, distinguished guests:

I wanted to come by here and principally do just one thing: to tell each of you--and through you your families that you have left this weekend--how proud your President is of the business community and of your recognition of the problems that this country faces, and also tell you how much confidence I have in your ability and your leadership to help me do something about these problems that I can't do by myself or I can't do with the other things that are available to me.

In all of my public life, I have never had anything that made me so appreciative as to know that men of Mr. Ford's, Mr. Austin's, and the other business leaders' background, stature, standing, accomplishments, and financial statements, if you please, would have enough concern for their fellow man to give their time, their money, their talent, and their heart to try and do something about it.

So that is why I am here. And I am especially happy to be with you when I think of the alternatives I have. I don't know, but you may have observed that there are several things going on in Washington this morning.

We have the negotiators on the copper strike who are here. There are bankers from all over the world down at the Federal Reserve trying to do something about the gold drain. And then there is the group at the Bobby Kennedy press conference.

But, Henry, I will take the businessman's luncheon every time.

Of course, always in this life that we all live, you have to take your chances. It seems everybody speculates these days. Some people speculate in gold--a primary metal. And some people just go around speculating in primaries.

The press asked for my reaction to the recent activities of the Senator from New York. I don't want to tell you all of my reactions this morning.

But when I read in the 'paper that he had pushed Henry Ford out of the "Meet the Press" program Sunday, I thought he was going too far too early.

If there is anyone anywhere who doubts the future of America, who has any concern about where we are going, I think it would do him good to come here and look into your faces to see where you have been. Then he could understand what our potential is.

You men come here this morning from cities across this Nation.

You have come here not to complain of a crisis, you have come here to meet it.

You have come not to just croak about trouble, but you have come here to tackle it.

You are really pioneers. Today, you are starting off on a journey of very high purpose.

You are launching the most massive and the most urgent job program in the history of this Nation--a job to provide hundreds of thousands of hard-core unemployed jobs in America's largest cities.

The Government is going to undertake to find these men and women and make them available to you.

Your mission is to train them, to hire them, and to try to get from them useful and productive employment.

In short, we want to take people who are destined to be continued taxeaters and through your processing, with some help from us, make out of those taxeaters fellow taxpayers.

Each time you place a jobless man on a payroll, you reduce his drain on you and on the Treasury and on your company. This will help to strengthen the Nation.

So yours is a challenging assignment. But American business has always been equal to its challenges.

There may be more than 500,000 who need your help. If there are, I expect you to meet your goal and then do what the doughboy did in World War I and what your sons are doing now in Vietnam--and what our men did in other wars, who were engaged in World War II and Korea.

So the spirit that brings you here, I think, is the spirit that makes America tick and go.

It is the strength that has guided this country in every crisis and every trial we have ever had. I think it will again.

Earlier this week in the East Room of the White House, I awarded the Medal of Honor to two of our bravest fighting Marines. As I stood there before them, and I heard once again the words "above and beyond the call of duty," I reflected on this. I recognized that not every man is called upon to give above and beyond the call of duty.

Not every man is called upon to give even his full measure of devotion. Not every man is called upon to serve his country, or to exercise his talents and his responsibilities.

But those who carry the burdens of public office must do their duty as they see it. They must do the right thing "as God gives us to see the right."

As your President, I want to say this to you today: We must meet our commitments in the world and in Vietnam. We shall and we are going to win.

To meet the needs of these fighting men, we shall do whatever is required.

We and our allies seek only a just and an honorable peace. We work for that every day--to find some way to settle this matter with the head instead of the hand. We seek nothing else.

The Communists have made it clear that up to now, thus far, they are unwilling to negotiate or to work out a settlement except on the battlefield. If that is what they choose, then we shall win a settlement on the battlefield.

If their position changes--as we fervently hope it will--then we in the United States and our allies are prepared to immediately meet them anywhere, any time, in a spirit of flexibility and understanding and generosity.

But make no mistake about it--I don't want a man in here to go back home thinking otherwise--we are going to win.

At the same time, we have other commitments, other international commitments, and we have very urgent commitments here at home.

All of these commitments ultimately wind up, as you executives know, representing a drain on the Treasury.

To do what must be done means that we must proceed with utmost prudence. We must tighten our belts.
We must adopt an austere program.

We must adopt a program of fiscal soundness.

This week we passed a law removing the useless and burdensome gold cover.

This week the Federal Reserve Board has increased the rediscount rate in an attempt to bring some restraints.

We are meeting at this moment with the members of the Central Banks in the world as well as with the leaders of the Congress. We are talking to the congressional leaders about adjustments and reductions that can be made in our national budget.

Hard choices are going to have to be made in the next few days. Some desirable programs of lesser priority and urgency are going to have to be deferred.

That is why we hope that the free enterprise system--the private employers of America--can help the Government take some of this responsibility. Because every one of these men whom you can employ, help train, and prepare, means one less that the Government has to deal with.

But the key to fiscal responsibility is still unturned according to all the fiscal experts. The key is the penny-on-the-dollar tax bill that is now pending. This tax increase will yield less than half of the $23 billion per year that we returned to the taxpayer in the tax reductions of 1964 and 1965.

We are paying lower tax rates than we have paid any time since World War II. We are in the middle of a war in Vietnam and we have all of these problems here at home.

If we could just go back to the tax rate that was on the books when I became President-before two reductions--we would take in $23 billion more this year. So I appealed to the Congress last week--and I will again next week--and I call upon the Congress now to meet the urgency of the hour with the responsibility that it requires.

Now, with all of these measures taken, our fiscal position is going to be strengthened. We will be able to supply what is needed to win a just and a lasting peace in Vietnam---hopefully at the negotiating table, but on the battlefield if we must.

We will fulfill our commitments abroad and here at home to try to move forward with a program of better health, education, and training for all of our people--more security and better houses for all of our families.

If our economy is strong, we can take care of most of these essential needs--not as quickly as we would like--but soundly, efficiently, and, I hope, adequately.

None of this is going to be easy or pleasant. But I believe that Americans will resolutely bear their share of the burden in helping to meet their needs at home--rather than push us into fiscal chaos or rather than fail to give our fighting sons the help and the support that they need.

As a young man, I grew up hearing a lot of name-calling. Some of it was applied to the economic royalists and the business community and the free enterprise system. I am glad that has gone out of fashion in this country. I have not heard it in several years.

I am glad that Henry Ford, and the mayor of Cleveland, and George Meany can sit here at this table side by side, because they all represent something special to this country-as you do.

Now is the time for us to exercise the patriotism that we have by trying to unite together to support the worthy causes of our country and to try to solve the dangerous problems that our country faces. You are doing that.

This will be a memorable meeting. I hope that they get a picture from the front because I think that every person in this meeting will someday want to point to his children-and if he is fortunate enough, his grandchildren--and say to them: "I was there when this all began, when there was a real awakening on the part of the social consciousness of the business power structure in this country who gave their talents and their money and their time to try to help those who needed help and who could not help themselves."

I am grateful to each of you personally, regardless of what party you belong to, what church you attend, or what section you live in.

You are serving this Nation just as patriotically and as needfully as your sons are serving it who wear the uniform.

Thank you very much.

Note: The President spoke at 10:05 a.m. at the Sheraton Park Hotel in Washington.

Richard Nixon

XXXVII President of the United States: 1969 - 1974

135 - Statement Announcing Appointment of the President's Commission on an All-Volunteer Armed Force

March 27, 1969

TO ACHIEVE the goal of an all volunteer force we will require the best efforts of our military establishment and the best advice we can obtain from eminent citizens and experts in many related fields of national endeavor. For this purpose, I have today appointed an advisory Commission on an All-Volunteer Armed Force under the chairmanship of the Honorable Thomas S. Gates, Jr., former Secretary of Defense.

I have directed the Commission to develop a comprehensive plan for eliminating conscription and moving toward an all-volunteer armed force. The Commission will study a broad range of possibilities for increasing the supply of volunteers for service, including increased pay, benefits, recruitment incentives, and other practicable measures to make military careers more attractive to young men. It will consider possible changes in selection standards and in utilization policies which may assist in eliminating the need for inductions. It will study the estimated costs and savings resulting from an all volunteer force, as well as the broader social and economic implications of this program.

The transition to an all-volunteer armed force must, of course, be handled cautiously and responsibly so that our national security is fully maintained. The Commission will determine what standby machinery for the draft will be required in the event of a national emergency and will give serious consideration to our requirements for an adequate reserve forces program.

I have instructed the Department of Defense and other agencies of the executive branch to support this study and provide needed information and assistance as a matter of high priority.

The Commission will submit its report to me in early November 1969.

1846: On 23 September 1846, Neptune was first observed very near to the locations independently predicted by astronomers Adams and Le Verrier. They had made their calculations based on the positions of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus.

An international dispute arose between the English and French (though not, apparently between Adams and Le Verrier personally) over priority and the right to name the new planet; they are now jointly credited with Neptune's discovery. Subsequent observations have shown that the orbits calculated by Adams and Le Verrier diverge from Neptune's actual orbit fairly quickly. Had the search for the planet taken place a few years earlier or later it would not have been found anywhere near the predicted location.

HISTORY

FEBRUARY 18, 1930 : PLUTO DISCOVERED

Pluto, once believed to be the ninth planet, is discovered at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, by astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh.

The existence of an unknown ninth planet was first proposed by Percival Lowell, who theorized that wobbles in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune were caused by the gravitational pull of an unknown planetary body. Lowell calculated the approximate location of the hypothesized ninth planet and searched for more than a decade without success. However, in 1929, using the calculations of Powell and W.H. Pickering as a guide, the search for Pluto was resumed at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona. On February 18, 1930, Tombaugh discovered the tiny, distant planet by use of a new astronomic technique of photographic plates combined with a blink microscope. His finding was confirmed by several other astronomers, and on March 13, 1930–the anniversary of Lowell’s birth and of William Hershel’s discovery of Uranus–the discovery of Pluto was publicly announced.

With a surface temperature estimated at approximately -360 Fahrenheit, Pluto was appropriately given the Roman name for the god of the underworld in Greek mythology. Pluto’s average distance from the sun is nearly four billion miles, and it takes approximately 248 years to complete one orbit. It also has the most elliptical and tilted orbit of any planet, and at its closest point to the sun it passes inside the orbit of Neptune, the eighth planet.

After its discovery, some astronomers questioned whether Pluto had sufficient mass to affect the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. In 1978, James Christy and Robert Harrington discovered Pluto’s only known moon, Charon, which was determined to have a diameter of 737 miles to Pluto’s 1,428 miles. Together, it was thought that Pluto and Charon formed a double-planet system, which was of ample enough mass to cause wobbles in Uranus’ and Neptune’s orbits. In August 2006, however, the International Astronomical Union announced that Pluto would no longer be considered a planet, due to new rules that said planets must “clear the neighborhood around its orbit.” Since Pluto’s oblong orbit overlaps that of Neptune, it was disqualified.
