THE PUBLICATION OF THE TIME MACHINE, 1894-1895
In a newspaper interview given in 1906, Wells stated that The Time Machine was written in a fortnight of sustain effort. If this was so, Wells could only have been referring to a draft of the story, and probably an early one, since letters written to him by Henley in September and November 1894 suggest that the story was still being worked on at that time. At the end of the year Henley took over the editorship of the New Review and arranged for the novel to be serialized there: it appeared in five instalments from January to May 1895. At the end of May The Time Machine was published as a book by William Heinemann, and this version is still in print. It is largely, though not entirely, the same as that serialized in the New Review. Some years later Wells made a few minor changes in the text, which mainly consisted of removing the chapter headings and running various chapters together; and this revised text was included in the Atlantic Edition of his works; it has since been reprinted in The Short Stories of H. G. Wells and the Everyman's Library edition of The Wheels of Chance and The Time Machine.
Allowing for minor revisions, this makes seven versions of The Time Machine, of which five have survived. But neither Wells nor his commentators have remarked that the first American edition, published in 1895 by Henry Holt and Co. of New York, contains a number of significant variations from both the New Review and Heinemann versions. Geoffrey H. Wells, in his bibliography, merely refers to the curious fact that the author's name appears on the title page as 'H. S. Wells'. This American edition was published some time before the British one (copies were received by the Library of Congress on 7 May 1895, and the Publishers' Weekly for 18 May lists the book in its 'Weekly Record of New Publications'; the Heinemann edition was not published until 29 May), though it is not listed in I.R. Brussel's bibliography of nineteenth-century works by British authors which were first published in the United States. It is, in fact, the true first edition.

THE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION
The first book edition of The Time Machine was published by Henry Holt, in New York, on 7 May 1895. Since the first English edition was not published by Heinemann until three weeks later, on May 29, the Holt text can claim to be the true first edition. However, it is the Heinemann edition that is now accepted as the final edition.

Early life and works
The boy’s early talent for music was remarkable. At three he was picking out chords on the harpsichord, at four playing short pieces, at five composing. There are anecdotes about his precise memory of pitch, about his scribbling a concerto at the age of five, and about his gentleness and sensitivity (he was afraid of the trumpet). Just before he was six, his father took him and Nannerl, also highly talented, to Munich to play at the Bavarian court, and a few months later they went to Vienna and were heard at the imperial court and in noble houses.
“The miracle which God let be born in Salzburg” was Leopold’s description of his son, and he was keenly conscious of his duty to God, as he saw it, to draw the miracle to the notice of the world (and incidentally to profit from doing so). In mid-1763 he obtained a leave of absence from his position as deputy Kapellmeister at the prince-archbishop’s court at Salzburg, and the family set out on a prolonged tour. They went to what were all the main musical centres of western Europe—Munich, Augsburg, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Mainz, Frankfurt, Brussels, and Paris (where they remained for the winter), then London (where they spent 15 months), returning through The Hague, Amsterdam, Paris, Lyon, and Switzerland, and arriving back in Salzburg in November 1766. In most of these cities Mozart, and often his sister, played and improvised, sometimes at court, sometimes in public or in a church. Leopold’s surviving letters to friends in Salzburg tell of the universal admiration that his son’s achievements aroused.

Statement on the Study by the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence
September 19, 1997
Today's study released by the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence confirms what we have known all along: that the Brady law is helping to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. The study also gives us more good news about the Brady law—that it has worked to help disrupt illegal gun trafficking patterns, making it more difficult for gun traffickers to do business.
While States are no longer required to conduct Brady background checks in light of the Supreme Court's recent decision, I am pleased that State and local law enforcement agencies around the country are overwhelmingly continuing to do these checks on a voluntary basis. Our goal remains unchanged: no background check, no handgun purchase.
I have pledged to do everything in my power to make sure that we continue to keep handguns out of the hands of criminals—including extending Brady background checks to violent juveniles who should not be able to buy a gun on their 21st birthday. Today's study further makes the case that for the safety of our communities and of all Americans, Brady background checks must continue.
