Not only are they retaliating against me for my comments on that, but because I am a critic too. I suspect my email back in 2003 were I was talking in an email about the Iraqis being smart, along with that weird tip I got about email being forwarded to an account with Texas in it. I wonder if that is what triggered that whole "cakewalk" business.
I think most of us expected a George H.W. Bush version of Iraq but instead we got a Saddam "Mother of All Battles" version of Iraq, just a decade later and a different Bush.

Statement on the Death of Lawton Chiles
December 12, 1998
Hillary and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Governor Lawton Chiles. Lawton Chiles was a close friend of mine for many years. He served the people of Florida as an elected official for over 40 years, always putting the interests of ordinary people first with his unique political style. As a leader, he has been an indefatigable champion of Florida's children and families and a steadfast protector of the environment. He displayed courage time and time again, most recently challenging the Nation's top cigarette makers and emerging victorious.
Lawton was a statesman, a role model, and one of the most successful and respected public officials in the later half of the 20th century. He set a benchmark for how public servants will be judged and, I believe, created a legacy that will endure for generations.
Lawton never forgot the thousands of ordinary citizens he met as he walked the highways and backroads of his State, whom he served so well. And they will never forget him.

Pearl Harbor: Fifty Years of Controversy

Commander Charles Hiles wrote the best article to yet be published concerning the "Bomb Plot" Messages. Tokyo requested specific information about the movement and location of major warships berthed at Pearl Harbor. On December 3, the Japanese consul in Honolulu, Nagao Kita, informed Tokyo that he had set up a system of codes confirming the movement of various American warships through the use of signals in windows at Lanikai Beach, which could be spotted by off-shore "fishing" boats and submarines. This vital information could then be passed on to the Japanese carrier task force. The signal system would operate through December 6th. The Kita messages to Tokyo were intercepted and decrypted by U.S. intelligence. Thus, Washington knew that Pearl Harbor was likely going to be attacked and by what date. None of this information was passed along to the U.S. Army and Navy commanders at Pearl Harbor.

Lawton Mainor Chiles, Jr. (April 3, 1930 – December 12, 1998) was an American politician from the U.S. state of Florida. A Korean War veteran, Chiles later returned to Florida for law school and eventually opened his own private practice in 1955. Three years later, Chiles entered politics with a successful bid for the Florida House of Representatives in 1958, as a member of Democratic Party.
By 1966, Chiles left the Florida House to run for the Florida Senate. Despite 12 years in the Florida Legislature, Chiles was relatively unknown when he decided to bid for United States Senate in 1970. He embarked on a 1,003-mile walk from Pensacola to Key West for his campaign, earning him the nickname "Walkin' Lawton". It was successful and Chiles defeated his opponent William C. Cramer by a 53.9%-46.1% margin. Chiles retired from the United States Senate and from politics entirely in 1989.
However, supporters convinced him to run for Governor of Florida in 1990 against the unpopular incumbent Bob Martinez, and Chiles defeated Martinez by a 13-point margin (56.5% to 43.5%). During his first term as Governor of Florida, Lawton Chiles brought reform to health care in the state and oversaw recovery efforts from Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Chiles faced a tough re-election bid in 1994 against Jeb Bush, who was a businessman and son of former President of the United States George H. W. Bush. Chiles prevailed over Bush by fewer than 64,000 votes. In his second term, Chiles was known for his reforms to education in Florida. On December 12, 1998, he suffered a heart attack and died at the Florida Governor's Mansion, leaving Lieutenant Governor Buddy MacKay to serve the remaining 23 days of Chiles' unexpired term.
The 1,003-mile walk
In 1970, Chiles decided to run for a seat in the United States Senate. At the time, despite his 12 years in the state legislature, he was largely unknown outside his Lakeland-based district. To generate some media coverage and meet people across the state, Chiles embarked upon a 1,003-mile, 91-day walk across Florida from Pensacola to Key West. The walk earned him the recognition he sought, as well as the nickname that would follow him throughout his political career– "Walkin' Lawton".

Folksy Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles, 68, Dies, Apparently of Heart Attack

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Lawton Chiles, a folksy Southern Democrat scheduled to leave office next month, died at age 68 Saturday after apparently suffering a heart attack, an aide said.
Chiles was found next to his cycling machine in the gymnasium in the governor's mansion, said Linda Shelley, his chief of staff.
Chiles wielded political power for almost 40 years, including 18 as a U.S. senator and eight more as governor. The onetime state legislator championed health care reform and unsuccessfully sought tax reform while governor.
He became a power broker as chairman of the U.S. Senate Budget Committee, uniting fellow Democrats against the MX missile program and Reagan administration budget proposals. He quit the Senate over congressional gridlock before the phrase became a popular political excuse.
Chiles first won the governor's office in 1990 over Republican Gov. Bob Martinez. He scored his most impressive and hardest-fought election victory in 1994, when he stood alone in statehouse races among large-state Democratic incumbents against a Republican tide, defeating presidential son Jeb Bush in the closest governor's race in Florida history. Bush finally won the office in November over Lt. Gov. Buddy MacKay, who will complete Chiles' term.
Known for his folksy wit, Chiles was remembered by friends and foes alike as a politician who could make complex issues understandable to the people.
"He had no ego," said friend Harold Lewis. "He was a Florida cracker and was proud of that."
President Clinton, in a statement issued from Israel, where Clinton was visiting, said he and his wife were "deeply saddened" to learn of Chiles' death.
"Gov. Chiles was, I think, in most Floridians' eyes, the epitome of a fine and decent man, a throwback to the age when partisanship didn't play the role it plays," said Rep. Robert Wexler, a Florida Democrat and member of the Judiciary Committee that Saturday approved a fourth article of impeachment against the president.
Chiles repeatedly capitalized on populist sentiment with a length-of-the-state walk in 1970, his self-imposed $100 limit on campaign contributions in the 1990 governor's race and an early attack on the breadth of government agencies and their regulations.
He led Florida during its lawsuit to recover health treatment costs tied to smoking.
The tobacco industry eventually agreed to pay the state $11.3 billion in what Chiles called "the best fight of my life."
Chiles became wealthy as an original investor in Red Lobster restaurants.

1990: Outrage at Iraqi TV hostage show
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has appeared on state television with western hostages, provoking a storm of outrage.
Saddam told the group of more than a dozen mainly British people they had been detained to prevent war and said Iraq wanted to see that they were safe.
They are among hundreds of foreigners being held in Iraq since its invasion of Kuwait at the beginning of August.
However, the Iraqi leader told them they were not being held as "human shields" saying Iraq was in a position to destroy any attacker.
Saddam singled out one young British boy - named only as Stuart - and ruffled the child's hair.
Speaking through an interpreter, he asked Stuart if he was getting his milk.

At the end of the 30-minute taped appearance, the Iraqi leader posed for photographs with the hostages before shaking each one by the hand.
A spokesman for the Gulf Support Group, set up by relatives of stranded Britons, said the interview "made all of us feel sick".
The British Foreign Secretary, Douglas Hurd, also criticised the broadcast.
Mr Hurd said: "I think the manipulation of children in that sort of way is contemptible."

In Donald Rumsfeld’s new book, Known and Unknown, out February 8, Rumsfeld offers an account of George W. Bush’s early interest in Iraq. This was just days after the 9/11 attacks. There were no apparent reasons for Bush to focus on Iraq, instead of on the actual perpetrators of the attacks.
Herskowitz said that Bush expressed frustration at a lifetime as an underachiever in the shadow of an accomplished father.

As many as six assistant coaches at Penn State allegedly witnessed "inappropriate behavior" between Jerry Sandusky and boys, stretching as far back as the 1970s, NBC News has learned.
It is unclear if any of the men made a report to higher-ups at Penn State before the sex-abuse scandal erupted in 2011.
The information, which comes from court documents and multiple sources with direct knowledge of legal proceedings, raises new questions about how long the abuse went on, why no one stopped it and whether there could be even more victims than previously known.
Sandusky — who worked in the football program at Penn State under legendary head coach Joe Paterno for three decades — is serving 30 to 60 years in prison after being convicted of molesting 10 boys he met through a charity starting in 1994.
But sources told NBC News that one former Penn State assistant coach witnessed an incident in the late 1970s. Three other coaches — who have gone on to work in the NFL and at Division I colleges — allegedly saw inappropriate conduct between Sandusky and boys in the early and mid-1990s.

(CNN)FBI Director James Comey's agents aren't weasels, he told lawmakers Wednesday.
Comey was defending his agency's actions regarding a federal probe into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. The investigation drew criticism from Republicans for not recommending charges against the Democratic presidential nominee.
"You can call us wrong, but don't call us weasels," he told the House Judiciary Committee. "We are not weasels, we are honest people and we did this in that way."

NEW YORK - Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, will take the stage of Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in Manhattan on Thursday to introduce "Office 97," the new version of the company's software bundle for office computing.
But the real star of the show, analysts say, will probably be a new application, called "Outlook," that has been added to the Office software suite, joining such popular programs as Word and Excel.
Outlook, analysts say, shows the progress Microsoft Corp. has made in linking its traditional products with the Internet, a key element in the company's effort to keep its sales rising rapidly.
And the new application, they add, also represents Microsoft's bid for leadership against rivals such as IBM and Netscape Communications in the fast-growing market for so-called groupware programs, which help employees work in collaborative groups.

The Cambridge Five were a ring of spies, recruited in part by Soviet scout Arnold Deutsch in the United Kingdom, who passed information to the Soviet Union during World War II and at least into the early 1950s. Four members of the ring have been identified: Kim Philby (cryptonym: Stanley), Donald Duart Maclean (cryptonym: Homer), Guy Burgess (cryptonym: Hicks) and Anthony Blunt (cryptonym: Johnson); jointly they are known as the Cambridge Four.
The term "Cambridge" in the name Cambridge Five refers to the recruitment of the group during their education at Cambridge University in the 1930s. The four known members all attended the university, as did the alleged fifth man. Debate surrounds the exact timing of their recruitment by Soviet intelligence; Anthony Blunt claimed that they were not recruited as agents until they had graduated. Blunt, a Fellow of Trinity College, was several years older than Burgess, Maclean, and Philby; he acted as a talent-spotter and recruiter for most of the group save Burgess.
Several people have been suspected of being the "fifth man" of the group; John Cairncross (cryptonym: Liszt) was identified as such by Oleg Gordievsky, though many others have also been accused of membership in the Cambridge ring. Both Blunt and Burgess were members of the Apostles, an exclusive and prestigious society based at Trinity and King's Colleges. Cairncross was also an Apostle. Other Apostles accused of having been the "fifth man" or otherwise spied for the Soviets include Michael Whitney Straight, Victor Rothschild and Guy Liddell.

Philby, when he was posted in the British embassy in Washington, DC, after the war, learned that US and British intelligence were searching for a British embassy mole (cryptonym Homer) who was passing information to the Soviet Union, relying on material uncovered by VENONA.
Philby learned one of the suspects was Maclean. Realizing he had to act fast, he ordered Burgess, who was also on the embassy staff and living with Philby, to warn Maclean in England, where he was serving in the Foreign Office headquarters. Burgess was recalled from the United States due to "bad behaviour" and upon reaching London, warned Maclean.
In early summer 1951, Burgess and Maclean made international headlines by disappearing. Their whereabouts were unclear for some time and the suspicion that they had defected to the Soviet Union turned out to be correct, but was not made public until 1956 when the two appeared at a press conference in Moscow.
It was obvious they had been tipped off and Philby quickly became the prime suspect, due to his close relations with Burgess. Though Burgess was not supposed to defect at the same time as Maclean, he went along. It has been claimed that the KGB ordered Burgess to go to Moscow. This move damaged Philby's reputation, with many speculating that had it not occurred, Philby could have climbed even higher in the Secret Intelligence Service.

Two weeks before he was to graduate from Yale, George Walker Bush stepped into the offices of the Texas Air National Guard at Ellington Field outside Houston and announced that he wanted to sign up for pilot training.
It was May 27, 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War. Bush was 12 days away from losing his student deferment from the draft at a time when Americans were dying in combat at the rate of 350 a week. The unit Bush wanted to join offered him the chance to fulfill his military commitment at a base in Texas. It was seen as an escape route from Vietnam by many men his age, and usually had a long waiting list.

I always suspected something like this was the case. The new issue of Texas Monthly delves into the long neglected story of George W. Bush less than stellar military career in the Texas Air National Guard. The Texas Monthly lays out the surprisingly complicated mechanizations that led to the Junior Bush landing this plumb spot in the T.A.N.G.
That George W. got special treatment at a time when draftees were likely to end up slogging through the jungles of Viet Nam shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to anyone who knows how America routinely gives special treatment to the offspring of the 1%.

1991: Iraqi troops flee Kuwait City
The Kuwaiti capital has been liberated by the Gulf War Allies after 208 days of Iraqi occupation.
Thousands of Iraqi troops began leaving the city after an order from President Saddam Hussein, broadcast this morning, to withdraw immediately.
He said he was ordering the retreat because of "the aggression of 30 countries against Iraq" and the economic blockade led by the US.
The first group of Allies into the city centre was a reconnaissance team of 12 US marines
