An influx of colder dry air from Canada today is expected to set the stage for the first widespread freeze of the fall season in the Spokane region.
A mild autumn has been responsible for bringing a first freeze that is at least three weeks later than average in the Spokane area.
Outlying locations and some spots in the city have already seen their first frosts.
The National Weather Service is calling for lows of about 29 in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene tonight with lows near 30 to 32 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
Highs should be in the low to middle 40s for the next several days, which is a little below normal for this time of year.
A weak cold front is going to bring a small chance of snow showers early Thursday, but any showers would change to rain after 10 a.m.
More stormy weather is in the forecast for the region this weekend.
Also in the weather, several locales in the Inland Northwest broke all-time records for a warm October.

167 - Letter Requesting a Study of the Effect of Imports of Watch Movements.

Dear Governor Ellington:
I should appreciate your initiating an investigation, in accordance with Section 232 (b) of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, as amended, to determine the effects on the national security of imports of watch movements. A long period has elapsed since the last full investigation of this matter, which led to the issuance of a report in early 1958 by the Office of Defense Mobilization, and it would seem useful to have an up-to-date assessment of the situation.
I hope that the experience which OEP's predecessor agency, along with the Departments of Defense, Commerce, and Labor, gained in the earlier investigation would mean that a new review, involving these and other agencies, could be concluded within the next six months.

The following events occurred in November 1943:
November 19, 1943 (Friday)
Inmates of Janowska concentration camp near Lwów (at this time in German-occupied Poland), staged an uprising that ultimately failed. Leon Weliczker and several other prisoners had run errands for the camp guards, and were accustomed to bringing firewood into the guard houses. On the evening of the 19th, two groups of prisoners attacked guards in two different locations, stole their machines guns, and started a breakout. The 6,000 remaining Jewish residents of Janowska camp were killed over the next four days and on November 23, Lwów (now Lviv in the Ukraine) was declared Judenrein ("clean of Jews").
