`Crashing Man' -- Crane Drops 11-Ton Sam Sculpture

The "Hammering Man," a 48-foot-tall tribute to American workers, toppled and was damaged yesterday afternoon when a lifting strap snapped as the work was hoisted into place at the new Seattle Art Museum.

The Mobile Crane Co. crane had lifted the 22,000-pound steel-and-aluminum sculpture from a flatbed truck and was holding it nearly vertical when the strap, made of thickly-woven fabric, broke.

The sculpture dropped to the street, its heavy steel feet gouging holes in the pavement, then fell across the top of the crane operator's cab.


The sculpture's fall was yet another problem for the new art museum. Its opening has been delayed by construction problems, and the museum contractor has asked for more money, because of the complex nature of the building design by celebrated architect Robert Venturi.

Drysdale isn't happy about this and talks with Mr. Brewster, who doesn’t care if he works on a garbage truck, but suggests a job at the bank. He ends up getting a job on the Board Of Directors at O.K Oil, though the newest Director, Brachner, isn't very excited about this happening.

After his first meeting, Jed thinks that the company is in need of more oil and money, so the clan opens up the well in the backyard. They bring in various containers filled with the crude oil. Brewster, needing to plug up the hole, sends the clan on a flight to search for new oil fields, but they find no success.

After learning about how much money planes take in, the clan starts its’ own airline business with the O.K. plane, with Jethro as the pilot. After a crazy flight, the passengers want off, but after having Granny’s rheumatism medicine, one passenger, Brachner, is very impressed.

United Airlines Flight 232

United Airlines Flight 232 was a scheduled flight from Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, with continuing service to Philadelphia International Airport. On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (Registration N1819U) operating the route crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa, after suffering catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine, which led to the loss of all flight controls. 111 people died in the accident


The crew guided the crippled jet to Sioux Gateway Airport and lined it up for landing on one of the runways. However, without flight controls, they were unable to slow down for landing, and were forced to attempt landing at much too high a speed and rate of descent. On touchdown, the aircraft broke apart, caught fire, and rolled over. The largest section came to rest in a cornfield next to the runway.


On final descent, the aircraft was going 240 knots and sinking at 1,850 feet per minute, while a safe landing would require 140 knots and 300 feet per minute. Fitch needed a seat for landing; Dvorak offered up his own, as it could be moved to a position behind the throttles. Dvorak sat in the cockpit's jumpseat for landing. Unfortunately, right before touchdown, the aircraft began a downward phugoid and veered right. The flight crew had no time to react. The tip of the right wing hit the runway first, spilling fuel, which ignited immediately. The tail section broke off from the force of the impact, and the rest of the aircraft bounced several times, shedding the landing gear and engine nacelles and breaking the fuselage into several main pieces. On the final impact the right wing was sheared off and the main part of the aircraft skidded sideways, rolled over on to its back, and slid to a stop upside-down in a corn field to the right of Runway 22. Witnesses reported that the aircraft cartwheeled, but the investigation did not confirm this. News reports that the aircraft cartwheeled were due to misinterpretation of the video of the crash that showed the flaming right wing tumbling end-over-end and the intact left wing, still attached to the fuselage, rolling up and over as the fuselage flipped over.

Of the 296 people on board, 111 died in the crash. Most were killed by injuries sustained in the multiple impacts, but 35 people in the middle fuselage section directly above the fuel tanks died from smoke inhalation in the post-crash fire. Of those, 24 had no traumatic blunt-force injuries. The majority of the 185 survivors were seated behind first class and ahead of the wings. Many passengers were able to walk out through the ruptures to the structure, and in many cases got lost in the high field of corn adjacent to the runway until rescue workers arrived on the scene and escorted them to safety.

This classic Cape Verde hurricane was first detected as a tropical wave emerging from the coast of Africa on September 9. Moving steadily westward, the system became a tropical depression the next day, a tropical storm on the 11th, and a hurricane on the 13th. Hugo turned west-northwest on September 15 as it became a Category 5 hurricane. It was still a Category 4 hurricane when the center moved through the Leeward Islands and St. Croix, USVI, and the 18th. Turning northwestward, the center passed across the eastern end of Puerto Rico on September 19. This general motion would continue with some acceleration until Hugo made landfall just north of Charleston, South Carolina on 22 September. Strengthening in the last twelve hours before landfall made Hugo a Category 4 hurricane at the coast.

I feel like that is part of the manipulation. I have noticed something similar in real dreams, but I don't think it is the same here. I think they are disquising themselves in my dream for some reason. Anyway, if it really was her, she actually doesn't have to worry about dressing down if we were to go out. Of course, if I have my way, it would be a moot point because why would I want to go out with her when I am in such an ugly situation? At the minimum, I would want to be back to work so that I have regained some independence. And hey, next time you are in my dreams, dear imaginary girlfriend, how about wearing a bikini? Red would be good

That brake valve on my red Ford. It was always screwing up. The master cylinder. I thought of that as I was looking at this image. The pressure would build up until the brakes would lock up. To fix it temporarily, I had to loosen a couple bolts on the side of the master cylinder and press the brake pedal all the way to the floor and hold it until the bolts were tightened. Eventually I figured out how to do it while in the cab of the pickup. The master cylinder (m.c.) was close enough that I could stand on the pedal with the drivers door open and the hood up and loosen and tighten the bolts. I wrote earlier about that shifting rod linkage sticking and I wonder if it is related to something on the shuttle.

Seems to me that the wing is thickest right in the area of the landing gear, which means it is about 5 feet high. In my memory on the Wainwright where I was helping George Campbell it was only that entrance to the area we were working in that was the most narrow. The work area was enclosed and kind of tight but nothing like the entrance.

backing out of his driveway when my brakes locked up. It must have been that day when another person with us, one of the chaperone's, explained that it was a problem with the master cylinder. He showed me how to fix it temporarily and I don't think I ever it got it permanently fixed. The problem was that when the weather was really hot, the pressure would build up in the hydraulic lines and cause the brakes to lock. The temporary solution was to bleed off the pressure by using a wrench to loosen a fitting on the side of the master cylinder while pushing the brake pedal down to the floor. At first, it required two people, but since the master cylinder was on the left side of the engine compartment side of the firewall, I could raise the hood and then get back in that cab and stand on the brake pedal while loosening the fitting on master cylinder under the hood.

We hadn't seen much that day and I wanted to score something. The dog came over to lick my hand and I disqualified it. I have kept a set of those coveralls in all the years since. I think even in my Jeep until I lost it last year, I had a set of those coveralls. I can almost remember feeling naked without them. At one event, the shocks failed on my blue truck and someone commented later he thought I was going to bounce off the road because the chassis was shaking so much from any pothole I hit. Another time something went wrong with the brakes and they were screeching incredibly loudly. I can think of a lot of things like that happening. The frustration of waiting for the gas station to open up, my step-father telling me about how he had almost run out of gas in his truck.

There was that dialog with Donald Gene after I wrecked my Ford. I said: You all right? He said: Yeah, you all right? Yeah, I said. Let's get the hell out of here! I think his door opened but I had to crawl through the window because mine wouldn't open and gas was pouring out next to me.
