Fright Night (1985)

I finished a while ago watching the 1985 film "Fright Night" starring Roddy McDowall. I have seen it listed on the so-called "Free Movies!" of the Comcast cable television subscription service I have but I just today decided to watch it beginning about 4:30 PM. I loved that film when I first saw it. I cannot recall precisely when I first watched it but I always want to say I saw it when we were underway at sea onboard the USS Taylor FFG-50. Considering the premiere date of 2 August 1985, according to imdb.com, I am not so certain that is when I would have first watched it. But maybe I did. Maybe the US Navy had some kind of arrangement for first-run films that were premiering in the theatres to also be distributed in the United States Navy fleet. I don't know. Maybe that is how it worked. I am also certain that the 1984 film "The Terminator" was broadcast over the ship's television system many times while we were underway at sea in 1985 but considering that it premiered in October 1984 that is more believable.

More likely is that I was seeing the 1985 film "Fright Night" being broadcast over the ship's television system in 1987 while I was stationed onboard the USS Wainwright CG 28. I reported aboard in July 1987 and just as in the 1986 book "Red Storm Rising" we were conducting radar and missile exercises for several weeks off the coast of Norway a few months later with F-14 Tomcats flying in and out of the radar-obscuring fjords of the coast of Norway. A few months later we left on six month deployment that had us in the Persian Gulf and battling the George Herbert Walker Bush Communist Iranians for most of that time.

So when precisely did I watch the 2 August 1985 film "Fright Night"? I do not recall but watching it again the evening I do recall it made me feel nostalgic for that time time period. I feel that kind of nostalgia for the 1985 film "My Science Project." I didn't have the kind of hot rod car as in "My Science Project" but his primer coated red Ford Mustang in the 1985 "Fright Night" makes me think of how cool I thought was my 1967 red Ford truck with the short cargo bed and the white mag wheels. Thinking about that all this evening reminds me of another film during that time that I was thinking about this evening that was about a robot a scientist created and about how the girlfriend character at the end of the film seems to have turned into that robot. I can't recall the name of that film even thought I have been thinking of it for several hours but I could probably find it if I looked for it, which I have not yet done.

So if I had written this first, I would have written about how the girlfriend character in the 1985 film "Fright Night" makes me feel always nostalgic, as it does every time I see it, for someone I knew and that I always wished I had been closer to. That notion was reinforced with the lead character, "Jerry," looking out his window with the binoculars and I sat her this evening thinking about how many hundreds and hundreds of hours I stood on the decks of the USS Taylor FFG 50 in 1985 with a pair of binoculars strapped around my neck.

I have thought about her and her parents many times and I have thought extensively that her parents are friends of my brother Tom and that is the reason they moved to the same place we moved and I think they are as counterfeit as I am.

Consistent with my idea that I did not see this film until 1987 is that I recognize a style to the clothing that the character "Jerry Dandrige" is seen wearing. I was reminded of a port we were in, that must have been 1989 and I am thinking that was Barcelona Spain, and a co-worker of mine that I signed out with on liberty took a photo of me posing with a young woman I had met there the day before in that port. She and I stood there and I was wearing a sweater that was very similar in appearance, I was thinking this evening as I watched the video, to a sweater "Jerry Dandrige" wears, along with other clothing that seemed familiar to what I was wearing in 1989, and I had my arm around that young woman that hull of the USS Wainwright CG 28 guided-missile cruiser seemed to be a massive shape looming behind us as we stood there in front of it on the pier. I think she was from Belgium originally. I told her I would write but I don't think I ever did.
