Toasts at a White House Dinner for the Prince and Princess of Wales

November 9th, 1985

The President. Your Royal Highnesses, Sir Oliver and Lady Wright, and Ambassador and Mrs. Price, ladies and gentlemen, Nancy and I are deeply honored to welcome the Prince and Princess of Wales to the White House. Permit me to add our congratulations to Prince Charles on his birthday, just 5 days away, and express also our great happiness that we have been able to have this affair with Princess Diana, here on her first trip to the United States—that we should be able to share in that first trip.

In his 1941 address before a Joint Session of the United States Congress, Prime Minister Churchill remarked, "I cannot help reflecting that if my father had been American and my mother British, instead of the other way around, I might have got here on my own." [Laughter] But Your Royal Highnesses, the reception you've received here suggests that if you had been American, you might well have gotten to this house on your own. [Laughter]

I wonder if I was transported on the Saipan for Grenada. Maybe it was Lebanon. Or both and others. How the hell could I forget this stuff?

From the halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli
We wil fight our country"s battles
On the land and on the sea
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean
We are proud to claim the title

Hi.
How's that ear?
Not that you'd ever admit it,
but if it starts to ache, take two pills...
and call me in the morning.
You're not gonna be here
in the morning, are you?
Shipping out
without even buying me a drink.

Édouard Daladier

ARTICLE from the Encyclopædia Britannica

Édouard Daladier, (born June 18, 1884, Carpentras, Fr.—died Oct. 10, 1970, Paris), French politician who as premier signed the Munich Pact (Sept. 30, 1938), an agreement that enabled Nazi Germany to take possession of the Sudetenland (a region of Czechoslovakia) without fear of opposition from either Britain or France.

Daladier was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1919 as a member of the Radical Party from Vaucluse département. Daladier quickly made his mark in Paris. In June 1924 he joined the first Herriot government as the minister of colonies. In the turbulent years from 1925 to 1933 he ... (100 of 327 words)

Édouard Daladier

Édouard Daladier ( 18 June 1884 – 10 October 1970) was a French Radical politician and the Prime Minister of France at the start of the Second World War.

Daladier's last government was in power at the time of the negotiations preceding the Munich Agreement, when France backed out of its obligations to defend Czechoslovakia against Nazi Germany. He was pushed into negotiating by Britain's Neville Chamberlain, without which war would have been inevitable at that time. Unlike Chamberlain, Daladier had no illusions about Hitler's ultimate goals. In fact, he told the British in a late April 1938 meeting that Hitler's real aim was to eventually secure "a domination of the Continent in comparison with which the ambitions of Napoleon were feeble." He went on to say "Today, it is the turn of Czechoslovakia. Tomorrow, it will be the turn of Poland and Romania. When Germany has obtained the oil and wheat it needs, she will turn on the West. Certainly we must multiply our efforts to avoid war. But that will not be obtained unless Great Britain and France stick together, intervening in Prague for new concessions but declaring at the same time that they will safeguard the independence of Czechoslovakia. If, on the contrary, the Western Powers capitulate again, they will only precipitate the war they wish to avoid."

Nevertheless, perhaps discouraged by the pessimistic and defeatist attitudes of both military and civilian members of the French government, as well as traumatized by France's blood-bath in World War I that he personally witnessed, Daladier ultimately let Chamberlain have his way. On his return to Paris, Daladier, who was expecting a hostile crowd, was acclaimed. He then commented to his aide, Alexis Léger: "Ah, les cons (the fools)!".

Windtalkers

Dear Joe, how the hell are you?
Or, given that you"re not much of a writer,
shouId I not expect an answer?
The newspapers say
our boys are doing great.
But I don"t think the reporters
have been to Kaneohe Bay Hospital.
I found a stray dog the other day,
on Waikiki.
I gave him a bath and took him in.
He reminded me of you, but cuter.
At least he keeps me warm at night.
I try not to think about you,
about what might be happening over there.
But sometimes when I"m lying in bed...
I can"t keep myself
from wondering where you are...
how you"re doing.
What the hell are you doing?
Writing a letter to my son.
Did you forget your orders? No letters out.
Command don't want postmarks
going to the reservation.
Did you hear me?
I thought that he might read them
when I get home.
What's his name?

We Were Soldiers

A telegram.
A cab delivers a telegram.
"The Secretary of the Army...
regrets..."
Mrs. Moore?
Colonel Moore's wife?
Yes.
I need help finding an address.
I'm looking for... You jackass!
Do you know what this is? Do you know what you just did to me?
I don't like this job, ma'am.
I'm just trying to do it.
Wait.
Wait.
I'll take it to her.
And if there are any others, just bring them to me.
Julie.
I just went by to see Catherine.
Everybody knows.
No chaplains or counselors? Cab drivers?
The Army wasn't ready.
I'll go with you.
Thanks. Who's it for?
I thought she would hate me.
Your husband didn't start the war.
They all knew this could happen, and so did we.
I'll take care of this.
I'll go with you.
We'll do one at a time. Okay?
We won't look.
Okay.
Julie...
do you think there'll be more telegrams tomorrow?

Danny Mason Keener: God. I'm sorry, but you shouldn't cross against the light like that. Hey, you guys are survivors, too, huh?

Samantha: Thank you.

Danny Mason Keener: What?

Samantha: Nothing. Great car.

Danny Mason Keener: Thanks. I have twenty three of them. You want to go for a ride?

Samantha: More than you know.

Hector: We don't know anything about this guy.
