New judge to decide penalty in Microsoft antitrust case

By Karen Gullo

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly was named today to decide how Microsoft should be punished for violating federal antitrust laws.

Kollar-Kotelly, an appointee of President Clinton, takes over the case from U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, who had ordered Microsoft split in two. A federal appeals court reversed Jackson's breakup order in June and today ordered the case be returned to a lower court under direction of a new judge.

Judge accepts Microsoft antitrust settlement

By Brier Dudley

Seattle Times technology reporter

A federal judge approved Microsoft's antitrust settlement with the Department of Justice today, essentially rejecting calls by nine states for harsher sanctions on the company.

Supporters of the company hailed the ruling by U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, but the judge did close some loopholes in the settlement that will lessen Microsoft's control over the programs bundled with new Windows-based PCs.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates indicated that in early readings of the ruling the company did not see "anything that would be cause for an appeal."

U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft praised the ruling.

How Soviets steal US high-tech secrets; the KGB uses blackmail, bribery and deception to plunder US technology worth billions to Moscow.

Article from: US News & World Report Article date: August 12, 1985 Author: Dudney, Robert S.

In Moscow's espionage offensive against the United States, no prize is more valued than secrets of America's high technology.

Like his predecessors, Kremlin chief Mikhail Gorbachev counts on pilfered American industrial secrets to help rescue the Soviet Union from economic stagnation and to keep pace in the superpowe arms race.

No fewer than 2,000 intelligence agents, smugglers and international middlemen are at work for Moscow around the globe obtaining everything from sophisticated computers to pinhead-size microchips in a no-holds-barred offensive where stakes are high, payoffs handsome and personal risks relatively small.

Ghosts Of Mars

If we blew up the nuclear power station, what would happen?
I mean, there'd be a huge explosion, right?
No, not unless you retract the control rods and expose the core.
Then what?
Then you'd have a small atomic bomb going "boom."
How small?
I don't know. It'd blow out a radius of a mile, maybe two.
Would it kill them?
It would certainly destroy their human hosts, but as for them...
I don't know.
Jericho, can you get us in?
I can try.
The plan was simple.
Sergeant Jericho, the science officer and I jumped off the train...
and headed towards the powerplant.
The others stayed aboard the train as it backed into the station.
The idea was they provide cover...
and distract the Martians as we set the charges in the plant.
And they'd swing back, pick us up and we'd all get as far away...
from Shining Canyon as we could before the place blew.
Like I said, it was a simple plan.
The only problem was, it didn't work the way it was supposed to.
- How are you doing,Jericho? - I'm working on it.
Hurry up.
We've got to remove the waterjacket and destroy the containment shell.
Where do I put the dynamite?
Officer to the train, they've spotted us. Get your ass back here now.
Yeah?
Let's go.
We've got to get out of here fast.
The Doc says the blast radius could be up to two miles.
- What does that mean?
