Judge accepts Microsoft antitrust settlement

A federal judge approved Microsoft's antitrust settlement with the Department of Justice today, essentially rejecting calls by nine states for harsher sanctions on the company.
Supporters of the company hailed the ruling by U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, but the judge did close some loopholes in the settlement that will lessen Microsoft's control over the programs bundled with new Windows-based PCs.
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates indicated that in early readings of the ruling the company did not see "anything that would be cause for an appeal."
U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft praised the ruling.

LUFKIN - Finding the piece of debris that might give clues to why the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry has been described by one NASA official as like "looking for a needle in a haystack."
Monday, the haystack got bigger.
While lawmen and volunteers in several East Texas counties were beating the piney woods and lake shores for more remnants of Columbia, the size of the "debris field" was enlarged to take in a portion of West Texas and a longer stretch of Louisiana.
Authorities did report a major find Monday. A man found the shuttle's nose cone buried about six feet in the ground on his land just outside the town of Hemphill. The cone was said to be in good shape and searchers planned to excavate it today.
Most of the significant debris and body parts apparently have been found between Nacogdoches and the Sabine River, but some fragments may be found as far east as the New Orleans suburbs and west of the point over Dallas-Fort Worth where the shuttle began to disintegrate.

The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster occurred on February 1, 2003, when shortly before it was scheduled to conclude its 28th mission, STS-107, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in the death of all seven crew members. Debris from Columbia fell to Earth in Texas along a path stretching from Trophy Club to Tyler, as well as into parts of Louisiana.
At about this time, the Orbiter shed a Thermal Protection System tile, the most westerly piece of debris that has been recovered. Searchers found the tile in a field in Littlefield, Texas, just northwest of Lubbock.

But still something is missing. That is still his real self painting the second picture.
So he regresses further, and paints a third.
A picture ofthe artist painting a picture of the artist painting a picture ofthe landscape.
And because something is still missing, he paints a fourth and a fifth
until he paints a picture ofthe artist painting a picture ofthe artist painting a picture
of the artist painting a picture of the artist painting a landscape.
So infinite regression, then, is...
The moment when our artist has regressed to the point of infinity
and is part ofthe landscape he painted, and is both the observer and the observed.
In that peculiar condition, what would he be observing
if he were observing, let's say, time?
He would perceive that time is like a freeway with an infinite number of lanes,
all leading from the past into the future, however, not into the same future.
A driver in lane A may crash, while a driver in lane B survives.
It follows that a driver, by changing lanes, can change his future.
It is not difficult to believe that in the dark and turbulent corridors of outer space,
the impact of some distant planetary, even galactic, disaster
jumped the apes from their present into ours.
